Abstract

How different are the generations, really? Everybody knows that the "generation gap" between younger and older people causes stress and frustration at work. Are the differences people complain about just a big misunderstanding, or are they real? And most important, how can one use similarities and differences among the generations to be more effective in one's organization? This book explains what can be done to retire the generation gap. Based on seven years of research on more than 3,000 leaders, the book reveals the truth about generational conflicts at work and what can be done about them. Abstract

Background Hearing loss is highly prevalent in older ages and has several health consequences. Some cardiovascular risk factors are associated with worse hearing at older ages. Still, the role of midlife leisure-time physical activity (PA) as a risk factor for hearing loss is yet to be investigated. Methods Among 3 198 participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, we investigated the associations of midlife and change from mid- to late-life PA (assessed via modified Baecke questionnaire) with hearing loss (audiometric battery [worse-ear pure-tone average, and speech-in-noise test]) at older ages. We used regression analyses, adjusted for demographics, medical conditions, and noise exposure, to estimate differences in hearing between those who met and did not meet PA recommendations at midlife and at late life. Results A total of 1 386 (43.3%) participants met PA recommendations at midlife. These participants, compared to those who did not meet recommendations, had lower (better) pure-tone average by 1.51 (0.46, 2.55) decibels, identified 0.37 (0.01, 0.74) more words (better score) in the speech-in-noise test, and had a lower relative risk of having hearing loss at older ages (eg, relative risk ratio for severe hearing loss vs normal hearing = 0.70 [0.52, 0.95]). Similarly, those who persistently met PA recommendations from mid- to late life had, compared with those who did not, a better hearing at older ages. Conclusions Meeting PA public health recommendations in midlife and mid- to late life was associated with better hearing at older ages and reduced risk of hearing loss. Abstract

Background: Hearing and vision impairments are risk factors for cognitive decline; less is known about dual sensory impairment. This study quantifies the association between dual sensory impairment and 8‐year change in memory among older adults. Methods: Data (N = 5552) were from the National Health and Aging Trends Study. Memory (immediate/delayed word recall, subjective memory) was measured annually (2011 to 2019). Hearing and vision impairments were measured by self‐report. Association between dual sensory impairment and 8‐year change in memory was assessed using multivariate linear mixed effect models and generalized logistic mixed models. Results: Rate of memory decline was most accelerated among participants with dual sensory impairment. For example, 8‐year decline in delayed word recall was −1.03 (95% confidene interval: ‐1.29, ‐0.77) for dual sensory impairment versus ‐0.79 (‐0.92, ‐0.67) for single and −0.56 (‐0.63, ‐0.48) for no impairment. Conclusion: Older adults with dual sensory impairment may be at particularly higher risk for cognitive decline. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In an increasingly global, technology-driven marketplace, a key organizational challenge is the development of leaders from the newest generation of managers. Recent and ongoing demographic studies and population research indicate that currently there are too few people in Generation X (born between 1964 and 1978) who can be considered as emerging leaders. Employees no longer expect to stay with the same company for an entire career. They also have a drastically different view of authority than previous generations. This publication provides an introduction to current thinking about and relevant research into developing, working with, and retaining emerging leaders of both Generations X and Y. Its goal is to help organizations understand the leadership-development needs of emerging leaders, what learning styles they tend to use, what challenges they face in defining and shaping their careers, and what leadership challenges lie in working across generations. In the first section, "On Emerging Leaders," main topics are outlined and themes are reflected in the relevant literature. In the second section, annotations are arranged alphabetically by author. Web sites are listed in the third section, and author and title indices are given at the end of the book for access to other material. (RT)
