112. An Exploratory TribalCrit Analysis of Educators Rising's Role in Teacher Recruitment.

Abstract

This intrinsic case study analyzed the community-based framing of the work of Educators Rising, a nationwide organization that aims to develop a pipeline between secondary students and the teaching profession. Using TribalCrit to examine publicly available documents, videos, and websites, the study found Educators Rising primarily framed community as a place: communities are physical locations that need teachers, the original impetus for Educators Rising's existence and work. Through its partnerships with schools and districts, Educators Rising seeks to cultivate market-oriented views of knowledge and teaching in these communities. The organization's standards and activities privilege certain academic knowledge over cultural knowledge. Building from this view of certain academic knowledge, Educators Rising packages conceptions of teaching forged by external entities like the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, which participants are expected to assimilate through their involvement in the organization. Additionally, Educators Rising attempts to enforce assimilation of external conceptions of teaching through competitions and micro-credentials. Communities, from Educators Rising's perspective, are sites to assimilate certain knowledge and narrow conceptions of teaching and teacher learning, primarily through student participation in competitive activities. Abstract

Entomopathogenic fungi routinely kill their hosts before releasing infectious spores, but a few species keep insects alive while sporulating, which enhances dispersal. Transcriptomics- and metabolomics-based studies of entomopathogens with post-mortem dissemination from their parasitized hosts have unraveled infection processes and host responses. However, the mechanisms underlying active spore transmission by Entomophthoralean fungi in living insects remain elusive. Here we report the discovery, through metabolomics, of the plant-associated amphetamine, cathinone, in four Massospora cicadina-infected periodical cicada populations, and the mushroom-associated tryptamine, psilocybin, in annual cicadas infected with Massospora platypediae or Massospora levispora, which likely represent a single fungal species. The absence of some fungal enzymes necessary for cathinone and psilocybin biosynthesis along with the inability to detect intermediate metabolites or gene orthologs are consistent with possibly novel biosynthesis pathways in Massospora. The neurogenic activities of these compounds suggest the extended phenotype of Massospora that modifies cicada behavior to maximize dissemination is chemically-induced.

135. Peronospora kuewa, sp. nov., a new downy mildew species infecting the endangered Hawaiian plant Plantago princepsvar. princeps

Abstract

ABSTRACTPlantago princepsvar. princepsis an endangered native Hawaiian plant, and part of the recovery plan includes repopulation using plants grown in a nursery. However, disease pressure from downy mildew is hindering repopulation efforts. The organism associated with the downy mildew was determined to be a Peronosporaspecies with brown, ellipsoid conidia measuring 21 by 16 µm on average, which was morphologically different from validly described species of Peronosporathat infect Plantagospecies, but it was morphologically similar to the invalidly published species Peronospora lanceolatae(Art. 40.1). Comparison of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (cox1), mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit II (cox2), nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS), and nuclear 28S rRNA D1–D2 (28S) loci revealed the unknown Peronosporato be molecularly divergent from Peronospora altaand Peronsopora plantaginis, but very similar to Peronosporafrom Plantago lanceolata, the type host of P. lanceolatae. Phylogenetic trees inferred with maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference from a concatenated alignmaent and individual gene trees confirmed the divergence of the unknown Peronosporafrom P. altaand P. plantaginisand its similarity to P. lanceolatae. However, attempts to inoculate Plantago lanceolatawith the strain from Plantago princepsvar. princepswere unsuccessful, which, in conjunction with divergence in ITS, suggests that the unknown Peronosporais specific to Plantago princepsvar. princeps. Herein, the Peronosporastrain on Plantago princepsvar. princepsis described as the new species Peronospora kuewabased on morphology, molecular phylogenetics, and host specificity. In addition, Peronospora gaponenkoaeis described here to honor Nina Ivanova Gaponenko on the basis of her description of P. lanceolatae.

Abstract

Motivation Whole-genome sequencing of uncultured eukaryotic genomes is complicated by difficulties in acquiring sufficient amounts of tissue. Single-cell genomics (SCG) by multiple displacement amplification provides a technical workaround, yielding whole-genome libraries which can be assembled de novo. Downsides of multiple displacement amplification include coverage biases and exacerbation of contamination. These factors affect assembly continuity and fidelity, complicating discrimination of genomes from contamination and noise by available tools. Uncultured eukaryotes and their relatives are often underrepresented in large sequence data repositories, further impairing identification and separation. Results We compare the ability of filtering approaches to remove contamination and resolve eukaryotic draft genomes from SCG metagenomes, finding significant variation in outcomes. To address these inconsistencies, we introduce a consensus approach that is codified in the SCGid software package. SCGid parallelly filters assemblies using different approaches, yielding three intermediate drafts from which consensus is drawn. Using genuine and mock SCG metagenomes, we show that our approach corrects for variation among draft genomes predicted by individual approaches and outperforms them in recapitulating published drafts in a fast and repeatable way, providing a useful alternative to available methods and manual curation. 138. The Mastery Learning and Conventional Modes of Instructing College-Level Composition: A Comparative Study Based upon Selected Student Characteristics.

Abstract

This study investigated the validity of the research methodology which sought to compare methods of instruction through the application of univariate statistical procedures, to contribute to the development of the theoretical position which contended that students of different abilities, needs, preferences, and attitudes should be differentially instructed, and to yield information which may be used to counsel and guide students in their choices of instruction. Conventional and mastery methods of instruction were employed to instruct over 500 freshmen English composition students. It was found that there was no significant difference between the mastery learning and conventional modes of instruction; different "kinds" of students achieved different levels of "success" between the two modes of instruction; and the student was a significant variable in the instructional process, but not the major variable. 139. Attitudes Toward Sex-Role Differentiation in Secondary Education.

Abstract

To the extent that equalization of opportunities for females and males requires socialization or re-socialization of massive numbers of people, the education system has a vital function in approaching the new ideal. Since the education system is explicitly designed to bring about behavioral and attitudinal change in young members of society, its impact on the rate of adoption of new patterns of sex role behavior can be immense. This is especially true of secondary schooling, since it is during the adolescent years that sexuality increases markedly, personal skills and talents most noticeably emerge, and career and vocational decisions determine each individual's course of action for years after. Educators attitudes toward sex role differentiation are a matter of growing concern for practicing school administrators, for these attitudes are likely to affect administrative plans, change strategies, and actions directed toward compliance with Title IX and related legislation. A sample of 862 administrators, teachers, and other professional staff from 15 midwestern public high schools was given the Attitudes Toward Sex Role Differentiation in Education questionnaire. The results suggest that there are six independent dimensions of attitudes toward sex role differentiation. Significant differences were found among groups based upon demographic attributes. Implications for developing change strategies are mentioned. (Author/JEL)

Abstract

Participation in decision-making by subordinates in an organization is frequently cited in the literature on organizational change. The exact nature and extent of the participation-change relationship, however, is a topic of some disagreement among reviewers and researchers in the education field. This paper presents an analysis of six major reviewers' seemingly contradictory interpretations of the participation-change relationship. It includes an indepth investigation of their literature bases, together with an explication of the methodological and theoretical frameworks that guided the research. The analysis provides an example of the complex issues that arise when the emphasis of research becomes one of proof or disproof rather than the integration of ideological positions into an overall conception of a social phenomenon. The paper concludes with some implications of this dilemma for future participation-change research. (Author/LD)

141. A Decision-Support System for Designing Inservice Programs for Educators: Survey Instruments and Guidelines for Their Use.

Abstract

The purpose of this document is to report a needs assessment questionnaire package based on the position that needs assessment surveys should gather the preferences of prospective participants regarding all modifiable aspects of an inservice program. The package consists of two instruments that may be administered either separately or in combination. The first instrument, the Experience-Interest Inventory, illustrates a form for assessing prospective participants' relative interests and levels of experience regarding a number of program topics. The second instrument, the Design for Staff Development Preference Inventory, asks respondents about areas relevant to the motivational and structural design of the intended inservice program. Each instrument was administered to over five hundred principals of urban and Title I schools across the nation. A preliminary analysis of results suggests that administrative inservice programs fashioned after the preferences of this national sample of principals tend to exhibit higher levels of participant satisfaction with the program than do programs not so designed. The rationale upon which the instruments are posited is discussed. Subsequent sections of the report present the instruments themselves and list computer programs that can be used to score the instruments. The report concludes with a brief description of a "model" inservice program drawn solely from data obtained through application of the questionnaires. (Author/JD)

142. A Role Theory Perspective of the System of Delivering Services to Exceptional Children: Mesa Public Schools.

Abstract

The paper presents results of a needs assessment survey, involving 112 public school personnel, conducted to facilitate staff development programs aimed at furthering the integration of the roles of general and special education administrators. It is explained that the survey instrument, the Task-Role-Involvement Inventory, had two purposes--to describe the perceived actual and desired systems of delivering services to exceptional children in terms of the assignment of key tasks to organizational roles and to identify, if any, those task role assignments about which system personnel disagree or do not like. Statistical data are reported for actual task role assignment, extent of agreement on actual task role assignment, satisfaction with the actual assignment of tasks to roles, role of the principal in the delivery of services to exceptional children, and satisfaction with the perceived actual level of involvement. The objectives of this study were (1) to use a pre-test to assess the knowledge of Civil Engineering students at The Citadel in their understanding of engineering management topics prior to taking a required junior-level course in engineering management, and (2) to use a posttest to assess student learning as a result of various pedagogies employed though the course instruction. Additional insight into broader student performance indicators was accomplished by comparing post-test results with embedded indicator data, which is collected annually, evaluated against department standards and used in department assessment of student outcomes.
