Background: Systemic inflammation is considered a major player in the pathogenesis of epidermolysis bullosa (EB), but its pattern has only been described in small heterogeneous cohorts. There is controversy if and how systemic inflammation should be therapeutically targeted. Methods: We examined serum proinflammatory, anti‐inflammatory, and itch related cytokines in a paediatric cohort of 29 patients with junctional and dystrophic EB. The cytokine that emerged as the most relevant was measured in a validation cohort of 42 patients during follow‐up visits over 2 years. Results: IL‐6 showed the most consistent and highest aberration dominating systemic inflammation. IL‐6 correlated with wound body surface area (BSA) in both, finding and validation cohorts. Patients with less than 3% wound BSA had normal IL‐6, while IL‐6 levels significantly increased at more than 5% and 10% of wound BSA. TGF‐β was only marginally elevated in patients with severe recessive dystrophic EB, while TNF‐α, IFN‐γ and IL‐1β varied inconsistently. Patients reporting itch showed elevations in type 2 immunity (IgE, TSLP, IL4 and/or IL‐31, respectively). Conclusions: Our data suggest a dominant skin barrier and wound healing inflammatory pattern in junctional and dystrophic EB that depends on the wound area and not on the EB type. In EB, itch mediators may be similar to other pruritic disorders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Legacy codes in computational science and engineering have been very successful in providing essential functionality to researchers. However, they are not capable of exploiting the massive parallelism provided by emerging heterogeneous architectures. The lack of portable performance and scalability puts them at high risk: either they evolve or they are doomed to disappear. One example of legacy code which would heavily benefit from a modern design is FLEUR, a software for electronic structure calculations. In previous work, the computational bottleneck of FLEUR was partially re-engineered to have a modular design that relies on standard building blocks, namely BLAS and LAPACK. In this paper, we demonstrate how the initial redesign enables the portability to heterogeneous architectures. More specifically, we study different approaches to port the code to architectures consisting of multi-core CPUs equipped with one or more coprocessors such as Nvidia GPUs and Intel Xeon Phis. Our final code attains over 70\% of the architectures' peak performance, and outperforms Nvidia's and Intel's libraries. Finally, on JURECA, the supercomputer where FLEUR is often executed, the code takes advantage of the full power of the computing nodes, attaining $5\times$ speedup over the sole use of the CPUs., Comment: 22 pages, submitted to special issue of CCPE

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
We introduce a highly sensitive and relatively simple technique to observe magnetization motion in single Ni nanoparticles, based on charge sensing by electron tunneling at millikelvin temperature. Sequential electron tunneling via the nanoparticle drives nonequilibrium magnetization dynamics, which induces an effective charge noise that we measure in real time. In the free spin diffusion regime, where the electrons and magnetization are in detailed balance, we observe that magnetic damping time exhibits a peak with the magnetic field, with a record long damping time of $\simeq 10$~ms., Comment: 5 pages 4 figures

Computer Science - Distributed, Parallel, and Cluster Computing - Abstract
This paper describes the achievements of the H2020 project INDIGO-DataCloud. The project has provided e-infrastructures with tools, applications and cloud framework enhancements to manage the demanding requirements of scientific communities, either locally or through enhanced interfaces. The middleware developed allows to federate hybrid resources, to easily write, port and run scientific applications to the cloud. In particular, we have extended existing PaaS (Platform as a Service) solutions, allowing public and private e-infrastructures, including those provided by EGI, EUDAT, and Helix Nebula, to integrate their existing services and make them available through AAI services compliant with GEANT interfederation policies, thus guaranteeing transparency and trust in the provisioning of such services. Our middleware facilitates the execution of applications using containers on Cloud and Grid based infrastructures, as well as on HPC clusters. Our developments are freely downloadable as open source components, and are already being integrated into many scientific applications., Comment: 39 pages, 15 figures.Version accepted in Journal of Grid Computing

The article discusses the use of systemic anti-inflammatory therapy in treating congenital ichthyosis based on a study of 22 cases. The study found that drugs targeting Type 2 inflammation reduced itch in certain types of ichthyosis, while drugs against Type 3 inflammation had an impact on erythema and overall skin condition. The research highlights the potential benefits of systemic anti-inflammatory therapies for patients with challenging genodermatoses, emphasizing the need for further research and clinical trials in this area. 111. Visualizing Properties of a Quadratic Function Using Torricelli's Fountain

- Abstract
In the same chapter of his book "Opera Geometrica," Torricelli published two discoveries: 1) initial velocity of a jet from a container increases with the square root of the depth of the hole; 2) he drew the pattern of jets from three openings at the wall of a container filled with water to constant level "H" and determined the height of the hole with maximal range. In studying the pattern, Torricelli used the mentioned law of initial velocities and Galileo's law of free fall and projectile motion. The first Torricelli discovery is now well known in physics education under the name Torricelli's law. But the pattern of jets from a container entered into physics literature along two ways, which we propose to name "da Vinci's way" and "Torricelli's way." Along "da Vinci's way" educators and textbook authors (Ref. 2 and textbooks and articles cited by Biser and Atkin) present incorrect drawings of jets in order to incorrectly "demonstrate" the correct Torricelli's law. Along "Torricelli's way" educators point out that the shape and range of a jet depend on the initial velocity as well as on the time of flight of a jet. Using algebra and calculus (instead of geometry, proportions, and narrative used by Torricelli and Galileo) the shape of trajectories, their envelope, range, and meeting of two jets at an arbitrary datum level are determined by quadratic function and quadratic equation. Their detailed mathematical analysis is presented in this paper.

In this paper we focus on the integration of high-performance numerical libraries in ab initio codes and the portability of performance and scalability. The target of our work is FLEUR, a software for electronic structure calculations developed in the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich over the course of two decades. The presented work follows up on a previous effort to modernize legacy code by re-engineering and rewriting it in terms of highly optimized libraries. We illustrate how this initial effort to get efficient and portable shared-memory code enables fast porting of the code to emerging heterogeneous architectures. More specifically, we port the code to nodes equipped with multiple GPUs. We divide our study in two parts. First, we show considerable speedups attained by minor and relatively straightforward code changes to off-load parts of the computation to the GPUs. Then, we identify further possible improvements to achieve even higher performance and scalability. On a system consisting of 16-cores and 2 GPUs, we observe speedups of up to 5x with respect to our optimized shared-memory code, which in turn means between 7.5x and 12.5x speedup with respect to the original FLEUR code.

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We consider a theory of an open string moving in a weakly curved background, composed of a constant metric and a linearly coordinate dependent Kalb-Ramond field with an infinitesimal field strength. We find its T-dual using the generalized Buscher procedure developed for the closed string moving in a weakly curved background, and the fact that solving the boundary conditions, the open string theory transforms to the effective closed string theory. So, T-dualizing the effective theory along all effective directions we obtain its T-dual theory and resume the open sting theory which has such an effective theory. In this way we obtain the open string theory T-dual.

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
In this article we study magnetotransport in single nanoparticles of Ni, Py=Ni$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$, Co, and Fe, with volumes $15\pm 6$nm$^3$, using sequential electron tunneling at 4.2K temperature. We measure current versus magnetic field in the ensembles of nominally the same samples, and obtain the abundances of magnetic hysteresis. The hysteresis abundance varies among the metals as Ni:Py:Co:Fe=4\,:50\,:100\,:100(\%), in good correlation with the magnetostatic and magnetocrystalline anisotropy. The abrupt change in the hysteresis abundance among these metals suggests a concept of minimum magnetic anisotropy required for magnetic hysteresis, which is found to be $\approx 13$meV. The minimum anisotropy is explained in terms of the residual magnetization noise arising from the spin-orbit torques generated by sequential electron tunneling. The magnetic hysteresis abundances are weakly dependent on the tunneling current through the nanoparticle, which we attribute to current dependent damping., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
This letter presents studies of spin-transfer efficiency in electron transport via discrete electron-in- a-box levels in individual nanometer-scale Ni particles at 0.06K temperature. In a strong magnetic field, the spin-transfer rates are estimated by measuring the amplitudes of the Zeeman splitting of the levels. We find that the spin- and the charge-transfer rates are comparable, demonstrating significant enhancement of the spin-transfer efficiency compared to that in larger magnets. In a low magnetic field, we find an additional energy splitting as evidence that the spin-transfer rate is far higher than the charge-transfer rate. The effect is explained in terms of the strong mesoscopic spin- orbit torques, which are exerted on the magnetization in response to sequential electron tunneling., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
We discuss a spin-transfer torque device, where the role of the soft ferromagnetic layer is played by a magnetic particle or a magnetic molecule, in weak tunnel contact with two spin polarized leads. We investigate if the magnetization of the particle can be manipulated electronically, in the regime where the critical current for magnetization switching is negligibly weak, which could be due to the reduced particle dimensions. Using master equation simulations to evaluate the effects of spin-orbit anisotropy energy fluctuations on spin-transfer, we obtain reliable reading and writing of the magnetization state of such magnetic particle, and find that the device relies on a critical voltage rather than a critical current. The critical voltage is governed by the spin-orbit energy shifts of discrete levels in the particle. This finding opens a possibility to significantly reduce the power dissipation involved in spin-transfer torque switching, by using very small magnetic particles or molecules.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
Bohmian mechanics, a hydrodynamic formulation of quantum mechanics, relies on the concept of trajectory, which evolves in time in compliance with dynamical information conveyed by the wave function. Here this appealing idea is considered to analyze both classical and quantum interference, thus providing an alternative and more intuitive framework to understand the time-evolution of waves, either in terms of the flow of energy (for mechanical waves, sound waves, electromagnetic waves, for instance) or, analogously, the flow of probability (quantum waves), respectively. Furthermore, this procedure also supplies a more robust explanation of interference phenomena, which currently is only based on the superposition principle. That is, while this principle only describes how different waves combine and what effects these combinations may lead to, flow lines provide a more precise explanation on how the energy or probability propagate in space before, during and after the combination of such waves, without dealing with them separately (i.e., the combination or superposition is taken as a whole). In this sense, concepts such as constructive and destructive interference, typically associated with the superposition principle, physically correspond to more or less dense swarms of (energy or probability) flow lines, respectively. A direct consequence of this description is that, when considering the distribution of electromagnetic energy flow lines behind two slits, each one covered by a differently oriented polarizer, it is naturally found that external observers' information on the slit crossed by single photons (understood as energy parcels) is totally irrelevant for the existence of interference fringes, in striking contrast with what is commonly stated and taught., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures

High Energy Physics - Theory - Abstract
We investigate T-duality of a closed string moving in a weakly curved background of the second order. A previously discussed weakly curved background consisted of a flat metric and a linearly coordinate dependent Kalb-Ramond field with an infinitesimal strength. The background here considered differs from the above in a coordinate dependent metric of the second order. Consequently, the corresponding Ricci tensor is nonzero. As this background does not posses the global shift symmetry the generalized Buscher T-dualization procedure is not applicable to it. We redefine it and make it applicable to backgrounds without the global symmetry.
