There is mixed evidence on the role that biological sex plays in shoulder biomechanics despite known differences in musculoskeletal disorder prevalence between males and females. Additionally, advancing age may contribute to shoulder kinematic changes. The purpose of this study was to determine if sex and age influenced scapular and thoracohumeral kinematics during a range of functional tasks. Sixty healthy participants aged 19–63 years (30 males; 30 females) completed a functional task protocol while their upper limb motion was recorded. Scapular and humeral angles were calculated and compared with multiple linear regressions to assess the interaction effects of sex and age. Shoulder kinematics were not different between sex and age groups for many of the functional tasks. However, females had lower humeral external rotation in the overhead lift task (15°, P <.001), and less scapular anterior tilt angles in the forward transfer task (6°, P <.001) than males. Age was positively associated with humeral elevation (R2 =.330, P <.001) and scapular rotation (R2 =.299, P <.001) in the Wash Axilla task. The purpose of this investigation was (1) to test the effect of movement restriction of the free leg during unilateral vertical jump on performance and power output comparing 2 different jump techniques: flexed (Classic technique) and straight (FC Luzern technique) free leg, and (2) to test the correlation between performance and power output obtained using these 2 techniques. Twenty elite soccer players performed squat (SJ) and countermovement (CMJ) jumps on each leg. The jump height and peak power output were compared between the 2 techniques for both legs. The jump height and peak power were significantly higher for the classic test for SJ and CMJ (P <.001) with no side effects or interactions. The angular range of motion of the free leg was higher for the Classic test than for the FC Lucerne test (P <.001), with no difference in the angular range of motion of the trunk. A moderate correlation was found between the 2 techniques on peak power (SJ: r =.626; CMJ: r =.649) and jump height (SJ: r =.742; CMJ: r =.891). Consequently, FC Lucerne technique, limiting the contribution of the free leg, is more appropriate to assess lower limb strength capacities during unilateral jump test. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite two decades of evolution as an area of research and practice, talent management faces ongoing criticism for being overly static in its approach, offering little in terms of enabling strategic agility. This is problematic as organizations increasingly rely on strategic agility to manage their dynamic business operations. Drawing on matching theory and adopting an agility lens, we explore the link between talent management and strategic agility. Through a qualitative research design, encompassing 34 interviews in 15 organizations, we explicate a skills‐matching perspective on talent management, including initial and dynamic skills‐matching in external and internal labor markets. Through this process, organizations can build a set of dynamic capabilities, underlying two meta‐capabilities, strategic sensitivity and resource fluidity, which enable strategic agility. In doing so, we portray skills‐matching as an illustration of a processual view on talent management and create a model of developing strategic agility through skills‐matching, responsive to external and internal demands. In response to a financial crisis, many organizations adjust their pay systems to reduce labor costs. In this research, we focus on the use of delayed pay (the postponement of employees' contractual compensation) and examine its effect on employee voluntary turnover outcomes. In a field study (Study 1) with data collected from the executive managers of 129 Chinese hotels experiencing a financial crisis caused by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19), we find a positive relationship between delayed pay and the voluntary turnover rate at the organizational level. In addition, this relationship becomes weaker when delayed pay consists of a larger proportion of pay‐for‐performance (PFP). We then conduct an experiment (Study 2) to extend our theoretical framework to the individual level, establish causality, and examine the underlying mechanism. The results show that the perceived negative instrumentality of stay (i.e., expected economic losses associated with staying in an organization) explains why individuals intend to leave organizations adopting delayed base pay but not delayed PFP. Employees play a central role in organizational functioning and representation. HR managers thus strive to create an attractive employer image that stimulates employees' attachment and ambassadorship. However, presently, there is limited research about how employees perceive and react toward their organization's employer brand. More importantly, the studies available have focused on content attributes only (i.e., instrumental and symbolic image dimensions). This has resulted in limited (content‐based) understanding of the construct and failure to incorporate its branding‐related aspects (process attributes) which represent the crux of employer branding theory. Thus, using the HRM system strength theory and employer branding literature, this article examines three process characteristics (i.e., employer brand distinctiveness, consistency, and consensus) vis‐à‐vis instrumental and symbolic content attributes to understand employee reactions (i.e., employer attractiveness, organizational identification, and employee ambassadorship). Data were collected at two times through Prolific Academic with 254 UK and US employees. Results suggest that employer brand process attributes are valuable sources to enhance employees' identification with their organization. Moreover, distinctiveness and consistency seem especially instrumental in enhancing employees' attractiveness perceptions and display of positive ambassadorship. There is an increasing body of research on algorithmic management (AM), but the field lacks measurement tools to capture workers' experiences of this phenomenon. Based on existing literature, we developed and validated the algorithmic management questionnaire (AMQ) to measure the perceptions of workers regarding their level of exposure to AM. Across three samples (overall n = 1332 gig workers), we show the content, factorial, discriminant, convergent, and predictive validity of the scale. The final 20‐item scale assesses workers' perceived level of exposure to algorithmic: monitoring, goal setting, scheduling, performance rating, and compensation. These dimensions formed a higher order construct assessing overall exposure to algorithmic management, which was found to be, as expected, negatively related to the work characteristics of job autonomy and job complexity and, indirectly, to work engagement. Supplementary analyses revealed that perceptions of exposure to AM reflect the objective presence of AM dimensions beyond individual variations in exposure. Overall, the results suggest the suitability of the AMQ to assess workers' perceived exposure to algorithmic management, which paves the way for further research on the impacts of these rapidly accelerating systems. This study contributes to the diversity literature by probing whether diversity papers are cited as frequently as nondiversity papers in management and industrial/organizational (I/O) psychology journals. Based on the stigma‐by‐association theory, I argue that as a result of their association with minority groups, diversity papers may be devalued and thus "othered" by scholars. Using a citation analysis of 46,930 papers published in 29 peer‐reviewed management and I/O psychology journals, I present empirical evidence in Study 1 that diversity papers were cited significantly less frequently than nondiversity papers. The authors' gender and institutional prestige, journal tier and domain, and year of publication were not moderators. In Study 2, I used a scenario experiment to demonstrate the stigma‐by‐association effect. The authors' gender demonstrated a significant moderating effect in this experiment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite their prevalence, workplace diversity and inclusion (D&I) practices continue to produce inconsistent effects on employee attitudes and behaviors. This shines a light on the need for evidence‐based approaches in understanding how employees enact D&I goals. Drawing on self‐determination theory, we argue that employee D&I motivation is an untapped pathway for understanding how inclusion‐supportive employee outcomes (i.e., more inclusion and less exclusion) emerge. In addition, we leverage attribution theory to inform when employee motivation can be shaped, demonstrating that employee attributions of the intentions behind their organization's D&I practices play an important role in shaping their subsequent D&I motivation. Across two studies, latent profile analysis identified five distinct profiles of D&I motivation, which were differentially related to inclusion and exclusion (Study 1) and predicted by D&I attributions (Studies 1 and 2). Combined, these findings highlight the importance of understanding employee motivations and attributions within the context of D&I. Purpose: To determine the characteristics of dental implant transmucosal surfaces that influence soft tissue attachment and marginal bone loss (MBL). Materials and Methods: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library electronic databases were searched based on predefined PICO eligibility criteria. Data from animal studies that compared junctional epithelium and connective tissue attachment and MBL from 4 days to 72 weeks were analyzed. The risk of bias was performed with the Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation tool. A rank analysis evaluation of data was performed, and the most frequently appearing materials/surfaces for each tissue compartment were identified. Results: The search identified 3,549 studies, 28 of which were eligible for analysis, with an average risk of bias of 28% ± 10%. Machined, polished, etched, sandblasted, or coated titanium and zirconia materials/surfaces were most frequently examined. Several studies investigated lithium disilicate, polyether ether ketone (PEEK) or polyether ketone ketone (PEKK), aluminum oxide, and gold. Based on ranking and frequency of use at different time points, titanium grade IV (Ti-4) microthreads with a polished neck area most frequently supported natural tooth-like junctional epithelial attachment (= 1.5 mm), while machined Ti-4 and machined titanium grade V (Ti-5) most frequently supported connective tissue attachment (= 1.25 mm) and led to the least MBL (= 0.75 mm). Conclusions: Analyzed data suggest that Ti-4 microthreads with a polished neck area and machined Ti-4 and Ti-5 were the materials/surfaces of choice for the transmucosal part of implants. Purpose: To report the prevalence of early implant failure and evaluate factors that contribute to the early failure of dental implants placed at a teaching clinic. The study also aims to identify risk indicators for early implant loss to better predict and prevent early implant loss in the future. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included all patients with a dental implant placed by the Section of Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine, Department of Clinical Dentistry, University of Bergen, between January 2011 and December 2018. All information was collected from operation logbooks and from patient records. A failed implant in this study was defined as an implant lost before functional loading. Results: A total of 1,005 dental implants were placed in the studied time period, of which 54 failed early, giving an early failure rate (EFR) of 5.4%, with functional loading obtained for the remaining 94.6%. Analysis showed an increased hazard for early implant failure among smokers, men, and younger patients. With an age increase of 10 years, the risk of implant failure was reduced by 14% (hazard ratio [HRR] = 0.86, P = .037). A higher failure rate was found in anterior maxillary implants than in posterior maxillary implants (7.79% vs 3.29%, respectively; HRR = 0.47; P = .041). The probability for early failure in the posterior mandible was significantly increased compared to the posterior maxilla (HRR = 3.68, P = .005). If the first implant failed, it was more likely that the consecutive implant would also fail (HRR = 1.82). In the study, 53.4% of the placed implants were Straumann (EFR = 5.2%), 30.3% were Nobel Biocare (EFR = 7.2%), and 16.3% were Astra Tech (EFR = 2.5%). Conclusions: This study found that younger, male, and smoker patients were associated with an increase in early failure of dental implants. Significantly increased failure rates were also seen for implants placed in the mandible, and there were differences with respect to implant system. Purpose: To determine the accuracy of dental implant placement using haptic robotic guidance in a large clinical series. Materials and Methods: In a prospective single-arm clinical study, 108 patients received 273 individual endosteal implants. A virtual preoperative restorative and surgical plan was created from a CBCT scan and matched to the surgical workspace on the day of surgery via either a tooth-based or bone-based fiducial splint. Intraoperatively, the surgeon manipulated a handpiece attached to a haptic robotic guidance arm. A variety of drills and implants were used. Both the osteotomy and the implant placement were guided by 3D haptic constraints according to the virtual plan. Postoperative CBCT scans permitted the calculation of the actual implant placement deviations compared to the plan for accuracy. Precision was calculated by comparing SDs from published literature. Results: The implants were evenly distributed by arch, with 47% placed in the maxilla and 53% in the mandible. The mean ± SD signed depth deviation was 0.14 ± 0.87 mm proud. The global angular deviation averaged 1.42 ± 1.53 degrees, with 95% confidence limits of 1.24 and 1.60 degrees. The crown of the actual placed implant showed an average deviation from the plan of 1.10 ± 0.69 mm and the apex of the placed implant showed a deviation of 1.12 ± 0.69 mm. Haptic robotic guidance showed greater precision than freehand, static computer-guided, and dynamic computer-guided implant placement. Conclusions: This large clinical series of 273 implants shows a high accuracy of implant placement compared to the published accuracy for angular deviations for any technology, as well as demonstrating statistically greater precision. Long-term clinical studies are necessary to establish the true effect of increased accuracy on clinical outcomes. Using haptic robotic guidance provides accurate implant placement while allowing additional benefits compared to computer-guided surgery, namely full visualization of the surgical field and the ability to change the plan intraoperatively. Purpose: To investigate the possible antimicrobial activity of glycine air polishing by comparing peri-implant microbiota before and after treatment. Materials and Methods: A total of 15 patients who received implant-supported full-arch fixed rehabilitations were included. After prosthesis removal (T0), Plaque Index (PI), probing depth (PD), and bleeding on probing (BOP) were recorded. In each hemiarch, the implant with the highest PD score was selected for microbiologic sample collection from the peri-implant sulcus (T0). All patients received two different hygienic protocols (randomly administered, one per each hemiarch): glycine air-polishing (G) and cleansing with cotton pellets soaked in saline (C). At 7 days (T1) and 3 months (T2) after the intervention, PI and BOP were recorded, and new microbiologic samples were taken. Traditional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and quantitative PCR real-time were employed for microbiologic analysis to investigate how the presence of different bacterial species varied according to the hygienic treatment performed. Results: Treatment G provided a significantly higher PI score reduction around implants compared to treatment C (P = .015). No statistical difference was found in the microbial population around G and C implant sites, with Tannerella forsythia being the most commonly detected bacterial species in both G and C groups. No statistical differences were found between the antimicrobial activity of treatments C and G. Conclusions: Glycine powder air polishing is a valid method for professional hygienic care of implants and was more effective in PI reduction compared to the control treatment. Purpose: To evaluate the precision and efficiency of a novel guide system for single implant placement in the mandibular symphyses and to evaluate whether the outcome is affected by the level of operator experience. Materials and Methods: A total of 90 implants were placed in three different mandibular cast types (Cawood and Howell class III, IV, and V). For each model, a complete denture was 3D printed. A polyether ether ketone rail with a guide sleeve was embedded in the middle of the denture. To determine the ideal implant position, the sleeve could be moved in a buccolingual direction. Adjustment of implant angulation was possible, and an angle correction of 0, 12, or 24 degrees was available. A total of 30 clinicians were divided into three groups: group 1 (experienced, n = 10), group 2 (beginner, n = 10), and group 3 (inexperienced, n = 10). Each clinician was asked to plan and perform a guided flapless implant placement in the mandibular symphysis. Two preoperative CBCT scans were taken; the first was to verify the planning, and the second was to adjust the planning if needed. Finally, a postoperative CBCT scan was taken to compare the planning to the final implant position. Results: Based on the first CBCT, the clinicians adjusted their planning by an average of 1.66 ± 1.65 mm coronally, 2.41 ± 2.44 mm apically, and by a mean angular correction of 6.08 ± 0.77 degrees. After implant placement, the mean deviation from the planned implant position was 0.87 ± 0.58 mm at the coronal aspect and 0.98 ± 0.64 mm at the apical aspect. The mean angular deviation was 6.05 ± 0.71 degrees. Overall, there were no significant differences in coronal and apical deviation (P > .05) based on the level of experience. In terms of angulation, a significant difference was found in both planning (P = .049) and placement (P = .038) between beginners and experienced clinicians. Conclusions: Guided implant placement of a single implant in the mandibular symphysis using a removable denture with guide sleeve had an acceptable level of accuracy. Clinicians with limited experience spent more time on the procedure, resulting in less angular deviation during implant planning and placement compared to experienced clinicians. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of initial implant protrusion within the subantral space on hard tissue gain for implants placed simultaneously with transcrestal sinus floor elevation (TSFE) with a biomaterial. Materials and Methods: A total of 50 implants were placed after TSFE in 44 patients using either a human demineralized bone matrix or a deproteinized bone mineral matrix. Intraoral radiographs were obtained before and immediately after surgery. CBCT scans were obtained at the last follow-up (mean: 6.6 years). Results: The initial bone crest height was 4.6 ± 1.4 mm, and the initial protrusion of the implants above the sinus floor was 3.5 ± 1.4 mm. At the follow-up assessments, the hard tissue mean gain was 2.5 ± 1.5 mm, resulting in a mean residual protrusion of 1.1 ± 1.3 mm. Only 10 implants did not protrude above the apical level of hard tissue. Positive correlations were found between hard tissue gain and initial protrusion (r = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.32 to 0.72; P = .0001), between the initial and final protrusions (r = 0.38; 95% CI: 0.10 to 0.60; P = .007), and between the follow-up period and final protrusion (r = 0.35; 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.58; P = .012). Conclusions: The higher the initial protrusion was, the higher were the hard tissue gain and the final protrusion of the implant above the apical level of the hard tissue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of different approaches to sinus membrane perforation (SMP) repair on bone formation, postoperative complications, and implant loss risk. Materials and Methods: Electronic searches on PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were conducted for publications up to February 2021. All included articles reported SMPs submitted for repair. The proportion of implant loss in repaired SMP sites was calculated using a random-effects model meta-analysis. Results: A total of 130 studies reporting SMP repair protocols were included in the systematic review, with 20 selected for meta-analysis. A total of 1,972 sinuses that were perforated and repaired during sinus elevation using different approaches were included in the qualitative analysis. The resorbable collagen membrane was the most commonly reported treatment. The presence of sinusitis was the most frequently described complication. Regarding bone parameters, the majority of studies described no differences between perforated and repaired sinuses and intact membranes. No difference in the implant loss proportion was observed between sites with repaired SMP compared to undetected SMP. The proportion of implant loss in repaired sinuses membrane sites (independent of the material or implant placement time) was 4% (95% CI: 2.0 to 8.0). In meta-regression analysis, no association was observed between the SMP size and implant loss proportion (P = .86). Conclusions: The materials and techniques indicated for SMP management seem to securely seal the maxillary sinus, without a negative effect on the ultimate survival of the implants placed in the affected sinuses. Purpose: To review experimental peri-implantitis studies using rat models and summarize different peri-implantitis induction techniques and evaluate their effectiveness. Materials and Methods: Electronic searches were conducted by two independent examiners to address the following issues. Meta-analyses explored the marginal bone loss (MBL) of four types of peri-implantitis induction methods in rats. The detailed induction tactics--such as the implant design, implant size, surgical process, time cost, induction methods, and endpoint measurements--were summarized. Results: Of the 18 included studies, 38.9% of the studies placed implants at the maxillary first molar, and 44.4% placed them at the alveolar ridge region anterior to the maxillary first molar. As for the induction method, the numbers of published studies on ligature methods, bacterial inoculation, and bacterial lipopolysaccharide inoculation were equally high among all selected studies. The total implant survival rate at the end was 160 out of 213 implants (75.11%). Eight studies with high pooled heterogeneity (I2 = 98, P < .01) in the meta-analysis reported an overall MBL (µ-CT) of 0.47 mm (95% CI = 0.14 to 0.81). A subgroup analysis estimated an MBL of 0.31 mm (95% CI = 0.12 to 0.50) for bacterial inoculation and 0.66 mm (95% CI = 0.07 to 1.26) for the ligature method. Histopathologic analysis revealed that peri-implantitis in rats was similar to peri-implantitis lesions in humans. Conclusions: Implant placement at the maxillary first molar with bacterial inoculation and the silk ligature method to build peri-implantitis rat models is reliable to use for research on peri-implantitis. Purpose: To demonstrate a modified surgical approach for horizontal ridge augmentation that allows for safe manipulation and predictable management of the buccal plate and avoids creation of a secondary surgical site. Materials and Methods: This pilot randomized controlled clinical trial included 24 patients who required horizontal alveolar ridge augmentation. Patients were assigned to one of the three groups: Group A was treated with the buccal plate repositioning (BPR) technique and grafted with silica calcium phosphate nanocomposite (SCPC) graft, group B was similarly managed and grafted using demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA), and group C was augmented using mandibular ramus autogenous bone block graft (ABBG). The primary outcome was the coronal crest width, which was measured at 6 months using CBCT. Results: The BPR technique resulted in horizontal augmentation with a mean of 4.30 ± 0.94 mm for group A, showing no significant difference from either group B (4.98 ± 1.13 mm) or group C (3.68 ± 0.27 mm). All augmented ridges allowed for successful implant placement with good primary stability. Conclusions: The BPR technique resulted in horizontal bone gain in extremely narrow alveolar ridges. It allowed for implant placement in a vascular cancellous bed protected by intact cortical plate. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of supraphysiologic administration of testosterone in an early and late model of implant osseointegration in rat tibiae. Materials and Methods: A total of 40 rats were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 10/group), which were divided according to the type of experiment and time of osseointegration: (1) vehicle (14 days), (2) testosterone (14 days), (3) vehicle (42 days), and (4) testosterone (42 days). Testosterone cypionate (7.5 mg/kg) administration started 4 weeks before implant placement, and the injections were performed daily until euthanasia. Machined-surface titanium implants (2.2 mm in diameter and 4 mm high) were placed bilaterally in the tibia of animals 28 days after the first testosterone injection. At days 14 and 42 after implant placement, euthanasia was performed and the tibiae were harvested to perform biomechanical evaluation and histomorphometric analysis of bone-to-implant contact (BIC%) and bone between the threads (BBT%). Results: There was no statistical difference in the removal torque of the implants between the groups treated with the vehicle (control group) or testosterone (P > .05). At 14 days of osseointegration, the BIC% and BBT% did not differ between vehicle or testosterone groups (P > .05), while at 42 days, both the BIC% and BBT% were significantly reduced by testosterone compared to the vehicle group (P < .05). Purpose: To assess the handling properties and clinical function of a new class of material, a so-called mineral-organic bone adhesive (Tetranite; TN), which as yet has no precedent in orthopedic or oral and maxillofacial surgery, for clinically unstable implants placed in immediate extraction sockets and immediately temporized in the anterior maxilla. Materials and Methods: A cohort of up to 15 patients requiring between one and four immediate dental implants placed into maxillary extraction sockets from canine to canine were eligible for inclusion. Implants had to be unstable with an insertion torque of < 15 Ncm. Implants were then stabilized using TN, which was allowed to set before reassessing stability using both torque and resonance frequency measurements. Implant stability quotients (ISQs) taken after TN setting were compared to ISQs taken prior to its application, and the implants had to demonstrate resistance to a forward torque of 20 Ncm to be considered stable. ISQs were monitored at 1 week and 1, 3, 7, and 12 months postplacement. In addition, peri-implant tissue health was monitored, adverse events were recorded, and implant success was determined at 1 year postplacement. Results: Eleven patients received a total of 14 implants. Three out of the first six implants failed within 1 month (50%), and thus a protocol amendment was made to remove steps considered potentially destructive to the bonding process. As a result of these amendments, only one further failure was experienced for the next eight implants placed (12.5%). Mean ISQ data averaged for buccolingual and mesiodistal measurements demonstrated a baseline value before TN application of 59.1 Ncm (SD: ± 9.7; range: 40.5 to 73.0). After final setting of the TN, mean ISQ measured 71.9 Ncm (± 6.5; 56.0 to 80.0). At 3 months, just prior to restoration placement, mean ISQ measured 71.0 Ncm (± 6.6; 57.0 to 78.0). Thereafter, the mean ISQ continued to increase at both the 7- and 12-month follow-ups with scores of 78.9 (± 4.6; 72.0 to 84.5) and 80.3 (± 3.8; 74.5 to 85.0), respectively. The surviving 10 implants went on to be fully restored and remained in function beyond the end of the study period to yield a final success rate of 71.4%. Conclusions: The purpose of a first-in-human study is to demonstrate an extrapolation of preclinical data into the controlled human clinical arena. It is an opportunity to learn what does and does not translate well from experimental data. In that regard, the current pilot study can be deemed a complete success. The implant survival rate of 71.4%, while disappointing, should be considered in light of the protocol amendments identified, the user handling experience learned, and the opportunity to modify the material to better perform in the human patient, as all represent important lessons learned. Objectives: The prevalence and the economic burden of periodontal disease are high. To save or replace diseased teeth, an objective prognosis assessment using the long-term predictability of the various treatment options should be performed. As dental implants have become a treatment of choice for replacing missing teeth, the number of implant failures and complications has also increased. The objective of this review was to compare the cost-effectiveness of saving and maintaining the teeth vs replacing them with dental implants in patients with severe periodontal disease (with hopeless or questionable teeth). Method and materials: A database search was conducted using Medline (OVID), Embase, Web of Science, and CINAHL electronic sources until July 2023. Two reviewers reviewed the papers in accordance with the specific selection criteria after choosing the abstracts that met the initial selection criterion for full article retrieval. Results: Twelve articles were included, of which nine articles discussed the cost-effectiveness of preserving teeth in severe periodontal disease and three articles discussed the effectiveness of implants that replaced the periodontally compromised teeth. It was found that placing and maintaining implants was more costly than properly treating and maintaining periodontally compromised teeth. Supportive periodontal treatment contributed the most to the cost during the periodontal treatment. Conclusions: Implants are an effective choice to replace missing teeth; however, these are not permanent, present complications, and require strict maintenance. Thus, when deciding whether to maintain a periodontally compromised tooth or to replace it with a dental implant, in terms of cost-effectiveness, implant maintenance cost as well as the cost associated with treating implant complications should be considered. Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate whether psoriasis disease constitutes a risk factor for OLP, by assessing the prevalance of psoriasis in a test group with OLP and the control group without. Method and materials: A cohort of consecutive patients diagnosed clinically and histologically with OLP between 2014 and 2022 was analyzed. The results were contrasted with those obtained in control series matched for age and sex. The correlations between OLP and sex, age, tobacco, alcohol consumption, and psoriasis were assessed using Pearson chi-square test. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between psoriasis and OLP. For the assessment of the quality of the statistical models, the Akaike information criterion was used. Results: The study involved 1,016 patients; 738 women (72.6%) and 278 men (27.4%). The average age was 59.38 ± 12.55 years. Of 508 patients with OLP, 16 (3.15%) had comorbid psoriasis, and this was 5 (0.98%) in the control group. Age, sex, smoking, and alcohol habits were not predictive variables in the relationship between psoriasis and OLP in these patients. There were statistically significant differences in relation to the number of locations, with greater extension in patients with OLP and psoriasis (P = .002). According to the multivariate analysis, the odds ratio of OLP for psoriasis was 3.13 (95% CI 1.20-9.68). Conclusions: This is the first study showing the potential association between psoriasis and OLP, and the results should be considered to improve knowledge of comorbidity of OLP. Objectives: The consecutive case series accesses the results and experiences of ridge augmentation using an umbrella screw tenting technique. Method and materials: In total, 279 patients were treated between 26 May 2015 and 16 June 2021, including horizontal and vertical ridge defects. Sex, age, smoking behavior, jaw, graft material, soft tissue thickness, extent of horizontal/vertical augmentation, resorption rate, and occurrence of early/late exposure were evaluated. Bone gain was determined by resorption at the screw head. Only cases without premature screw removal were evaluated metrically (n = 201). All other augmentations were evaluated according to whether implantation was possible with or without further augmentation (n = 27). A target performance index was calculated, which should enable evidence-based comparability of different augmentation methods in future. Results: In total, 54 wound dehiscences (39 early, 15 late exposures) occurred, which corresponds to 24.08% of the augmented sites; 42 umbrella screws were removed prematurely. In all cases an implantation was possible at the desired position afterwards. Cases with a vertical augmentation component showed a higher prevalence of exposure (early, P = .000; late, P = .024). The extent of the vertical augmentation was only relevant for early exposure (P = .048). Mean bone gain of 4.23 ± 1.69 mm horizontally and 4.11 ± 1.99 mm vertically could be achieved. Regression analysis showed that there was no limit in horizontal/vertical direction. Mean percentage target performance index was 75.90 ± 20.54 for vertical and 82.25 ± 16.67 for horizontal portions. Objectives: Microneedling and injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) have been proposed as relatively less invasive alternatives to surgical procedures for augmentation of thin periodontal phenotype. The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of microneedling and i-PRF alone on gingival thickness in thin periodontal phenotype individuals. Method and materials: Systemically healthy individuals with thin periodontal phenotype in mandibular anterior teeth (n = 21) were treated with microneedling on one side and i-PRF on the contralateral side. Assessment of gingival thickness, keratinized tissue width, and periodontal parameters was done at baseline, and at 1, 3, and 6 months. Results: In intergroup comparison, a statistically significant increase in gingival thickness was observed with microneedling as compared to i-PRF at 6 months (P < .02). Intragroup comparison from baseline to 6 months showed a statistically significant increase in gingival thickness within both the groups: microneedling from 0.78 ± 0.12 mm to 1.00 ± 0.14 mm (P < .000), and i-PRF from 0.77 ± 0.10 mm to 0.93 ± 0.12 mm (P < .000). Intragroup comparison showed a statistically significant increase in keratinized tissue width in the microneedling group (P < .000). A statistically significant decrease in periodontal parameters was observed on intragroup comparison (P < .000). Objective: Inflammatory pathogenesis is common to periodontitis and oral lichen planus. This study was conducted to assess and compare the periodontal status of patients with and without oral lichen planus. Method and materials: 108 patients comprising 54 with oral lichen planus and 54 age-matched systemically healthy participants without oral lichen planus were selected. Periodontal parameters, ie Plaque Index, Gingival Index, bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, and periodontal phenotype were measured. Results: On comparing the test and control groups, statistically significant differences were observed in respect to Plaque Index (P = .00), Gingival Index (P = .00), and bleeding on probing (P = .00). A higher proportion of sites with deeper pockets was observed in the test group (P = .00). On comparison of various oral lichen planus subtypes, significant difference was observed in respect to Gingival Index (P = .00) and bleeding on probing (P = .00). A higher proportion of sites with deeper pockets (P = .01) and greater CAL (P = .00) was observed in the erosive/atrophic subgroup compared to the reticular group. However, the differences between the reticular (a less severe form of oral lichen planus) and control group in terms of Gingival Index (P = .94), Plaque Index (P = .05), bleeding on probing (P = .17), probing pocket depth (P = .56), and clinical attachment level (P = .23) were not statistically significant. Statistically significant differences were observed in terms of Gingival Index (P = .01) and bleeding on probing (P = .00) between thin and thick periodontal phenotypes in the oral lichen planus group. Statistically significant positive correlations in periodontal parameters with increased gingival involvement and severity were observed using Spearman rank correlation coefficient. Conclusion: Significantly greater periodontal inflammation in the test group means there is a risk of greater attachment loss in future. The present study assessed the impact of a fixed prosthetic rehabilitation on masticatory function in patients diagnosed with stage IV periodontitis. Eligible participants were adults in need of complex rehabilitation due to masticatory dysfunction. Masticatory function was evaluated using the two‐ colored chewing gum mixing ability test (VOH) at the diagnostic phase (T0), 1 week after delivery of the prosthetic prototype (T1), and 1 week after delivery of the final prosthetic solution (T2). Ten subjects were treated with a fixed prosthesis following periodontal and implant surgery using an individualized, fully digital workflow. Full-mouth plaque and bleeding scores, pocket depth, and clinical attachment level improved significantly. VOH was 0.472 ± 0.168 at T0, 0.358 ± 0.166 at T1, and 0.250 ± 0.123 at T2. A significant improvement in VOH was observed from T0 to T1 (difference: –0.114; 95% CI: –0.199 to –0.029; P = .014) and from T1 to T2 (difference: –0.108; 95% CI: –0.200 to –0.015; P = .027). From T0 to T2, VOH increased by 44.3%. Self-perceived assessment of masticatory function also improved from T0 to T2 (P = .002). The fixed prosthetic rehabilitation in patients with stage IV periodontitis allowed for a significant improvement in objective and subjective measurements of masticatory function. The purpose of the present study was to describe a novel protocol for a minimally invasive pocket elimination surgery (MI-PES) in the posterior maxilla and mandible, which consists of the combined use of (1) an access flap based on an internally beveled gingivectomy with minimal to no papilla mobilization at the buccal aspect, and (2) a resective procedure with an apically positioned flap on the lingual aspect. The interproximal bone defects were accessed with a single (lingual) flap, and the bone architecture was modified by the adoption of piezoelectric inserts for controlled bone recontouring associated with fiber retention. Mean probing depth (PD) was 5.5 ± 0.8 mm before surgery and 2.7 ± 0.6 mm at the 6-month reevaluation. All treated pockets showed a postsurgical PD < 4 mm. Gingival recession (REC) was 0.3 ± 0.5 mm at baseline and increased to 1.6 ± 0.8 mm at 6 months. When buccal and lingual pockets were analyzed separately, a trend toward a similar PD reduction, less REC increase, and greater clinical attachment level gain was recorded for buccal pockets. These preliminary observations seem to support the use of MI-PES as a valuable option for pocket elimination, at least when residual pockets are associated with a shallow interproximal osseous crater in the posterior maxilla or mandible. Traditional GBR procedures have been associated with frequent complications and compromised peri-implant esthetics. Tunneling techniques have been proposed as a promising alternative in this regard. More recently, a subperiosteal minimally invasive aesthetic ridge augmentation technique (SMART) was reported to have been clinically successful in a prospective case series. This technique includes the use of a bone graft/recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB combination delivered to the site by a tunneling method. However, published histologic information regarding the nature of the regenerated tissue has been limited. The current study evaluated the histologic and histomorphometric findings of four human specimens harvested at 2, 5, 9, and 14 months after ridge augmentation using the SMART method. Evaluations of the wound healing and bone regeneration sequence over time found that the ridge augmentation was the result of extensive new bone formation that progressed through the woven bone to lamellar bone stages, with remodeling of the xenogeneic graft material and replacement by patient bone. Successful rehabilitation of severely atrophic, short-span edentulous ridges in esthetic regions can seldom be done without some form of vertical ridge augmentation (VRA). The best available evidence shows that guided bone regeneration procedures may present a very predictable option with reduced potential for complications compared to alternative options. The present case series presents a novel technique to achieve predictable VRA with a low complication rate using tenting screws and cross-linked resorbable membranes. A total of 10 patients (5 men, 5 women) with severe vertical defects in the esthetic zone participated in this study. Following a mean healing time of 9.3 months, the mean defect resolution was 80%, with a mean vertical bone gain of 6.2 ± 1.61 mm. Purpose: Although running traditionally relies on critical speed (CS) as an indicator of critical intensity, portable inertial measurement units offer a potential solution for estimating running mechanical power to assess critical power (CP) in runners. The purpose of this study was to determine whether CS and CP differ when assessed using the Stryd device, a portable inertial measurement unit, and if 2 running bouts are sufficient to determine CS and CP. Methods: On an outdoor running track, 10 trained runners ( V ˙ O 2 max , 59.0 [4.2] mL·kg−1·min−1) performed 3 running time trials (TT) between 1200 and 4400 m on separate days. CS and CP were derived from 2-parameter hyperbolic speed–time and power–time models, respectively, using 2 (CS2TT and CP2TT) and 3 (CS3TT and CP3TT) TTs. Subsequently, runners performed constant-intensity running for 800 m at their calculated CS3TT and CP3TT. Results: Running at the calculated CS3TT speed (3.88 [0.44] m·s−1) elicited an average Stryd running power (271 [28] W) not different from the calculated CP3TT (270 [28]; P =.940; d = 0.02), with excellent agreement between the 2 values (intraclass correlation coefficient =.980). The CS2TT (3.97 [0.42] m·s−1) was not higher than CS3TT (3.89 [0.44] m·s−1; P =.178; d = 0.46); however, CP2TT (278 [29] W) was greater than CP3TT (P =.041; d = 0.75). Conclusion: The running intensities at CS and CP were similar, supporting the use of running power (Stryd) as a metric of aerobic fitness and exercise prescription, and 2 trials provided a reasonable, albeit higher, estimate of CS and CP. Purpose: To investigate the effect of cycling-based repeated-sprint training in hypoxia versus in normoxia on single overground running sprint performance and associated force–velocity (F–V) profile in world-class female rugby sevens players. Methods: Eighteen world-class female rugby sevens players were randomly assigned to repeated-sprint cycling training in normobaric hypoxia (n = 9) or normoxia (n = 9) groups. Training consisted of 4 sessions of repeated-sprint cycling training in normobaric hypoxia or in normoxia (4 × 5 × 5-s cycle sprints—25-s intersprint recovery performed in simulated altitude of ∼5000 m or in normoxia with 3-min interset rest in normoxia for both groups) in addition to rugby sevens training and strength and conditioning sessions within a 9-day intervention period before an international competition. Before and 1 day after the intervention, single 50-m overground running "all-out" sprint performance and associated F–V-related mechanical output were assessed. Results: No interaction (group × time; all P >.088), time effect (before vs 1 d after; all P >.296), or group effect (repeated-sprint cycling training in normobaric hypoxia vs in normoxia; all P >.325) was detected for 50-m overground running sprint performance and any derived F–V profiling variables. Conclusions: Four sessions of repeated-sprint training either in hypoxia or in normoxia performed over 9 days had no influence on single 50-m overground running sprint performance and associated F–V profile. In world-class female rugby sevens players, the intervention (training camp before an international competition) might have been too short to induce measurable changes. Purpose: To examine the effects of a neuromuscular training program combining plyometric exercises with acceleration, deceleration, and change-of-direction drills conducted on sand or hard surfaces on the fitness qualities of young male tennis players. Methods: Thirty-one young male players were allocated to a training group performing 12 training sessions on sand or hard surfaces, during a 6-week period. Tests included linear sprint (10-m acceleration with 5-m split times), change of direction (modified 5-0-5 test), vertical jumps (countermovement jump and the 10/5 repeated-jump test), isometric hip abduction and adduction strength, and dynamic balance (Y-balance test). Perceived training loads and muscle soreness were assessed during the intervention. Results: Both training strategies were similarly effective in improving the analyzed fitness components. Group × time interaction effects were noticed, with countermovement jump (P =.032), repeated-jump test (P =.029), and reactive strength index (P =.008) favoring hard surfaces and 5-m sprint (P =.009), dynamic balance (P <.05), adduction strength (P <.05), and abduction strength (P <.001) indices favoring sand. Furthermore, the sand group promoted greater perceived training loads and muscle soreness (P <.05) than the hard group across the intervention period. Conclusion: Neuromuscular training strategies characterized by a relatively low volume (∼35 min), conducted on sand or hard surfaces, promoted similar improvements in the fitness qualities of young tennis players, with selected surface-interaction effects. Purpose: The present study aimed to establish differences in load–velocity profiling, active drag (AD), and drag coefficient (Cd) between 3 age groups of female swimmers. Methods: Thirty-three swimmers (11, 13, or 16 y old) were recruited. The individual load–velocity profile was determined for the 4 competitive swimming strokes. The maximal velocity (V0), maximal load (L0), L0 normalized to the body mass, AD, and Cd were compared between the groups. A 2-way analysis of variance and correlation analysis were conducted. Results: Compared with their younger counterparts, 16-year-old swimmers generally had larger V0, L0, and AD, which was particularly evident when comparing them with 11-year-old swimmers (P ≤.052). The exception was breaststroke, where no differences were observed in L0 and AD and Cd was smaller in the 16-year-old group than the 11-year-old group (P =.03). There was a negative correlation between Cd and V0 for all groups in backstroke (P ≤.038) and for the 11-year-old group and 13-year-old group in breaststroke (P ≤.022) and front crawl (P ≤.010). For the 16-year-old group, large correlations with V0 were observed for L0, L0 normalized to the body mass, and AD (P ≤.010) in breaststroke and for L0 and AD with V0 in front crawl (P ≤.042). In butterfly, large negative correlations with V0 were observed in the 13-year-old group for all parameters (P ≤.027). Conclusions: Greater propulsive force is likely the factor that differentiates the oldest age group from the younger groups, except for breaststroke, where a lower Cd (implying a better technique) is evident in the oldest group. Purpose: To assess the core temperature fluctuations during 10-km open-water swimming (OWS) in cool water and the relationship between thermal sensation (TS) after 10-km OWS, core temperature, and local skin thermal sensitivity. Methods: Nine highly trained OWS swimmers (4 female; age 22 [3] y) completed a single 10-km trial in cool water (22.3 °C) wearing swimsuits for OWS. During the trial, core temperature was continuously recorded via ingestible temperature sensors, and TS after trial was also measured. Then, local skin warm/cool sensitivity was measured in the forearm. Results: All swimmers completed the 10-km OWS. Mean swimming speed for males and females were 1.39 (1.37–1.42 m/s) and 1.33 m/s (1.29–1.38 m/s), respectively. Core temperature increased in 8 out of 9 swimmers during 10-km OWS (P =.047), with an average increase of 0.8 °C. TS after 10-km OWS varied among swimmers. There were no correlations between post-OWS TS and post-OWS core temperature (P =.9333), whereas there was a negative correlation between post-OWS TS and local skin cool sensitivity (P =.0056). Conclusion: These results suggest that core temperature in elite swimmers might not decrease during 10-km OWS in the cool water temperature of official OWS. Background: Maximal lower-body strength can be assessed both dynamically and isometrically; however, the relationship between the changes in these 2 forms of strength following resistance training is not well understood. Purpose: To systematically review and analyze the effects of resistance training on changes in maximal dynamic (1-repetition-maximum back squat, deadlift, and power clean) and position-matched isometric strength (isometric midthigh pull and the isometric squat). In addition, individual-level data were used to quantify the agreement and relationship between changes in dynamic and isometric strength. Methods: Databases were systematically searched to identify eligible articles, and meta-analysis procedures were performed on the extracted data. The raw results from 4 studies were acquired, enabling bias and absolute reliability measures to be calculated using Bland–Altman test of agreement. Results: Eleven studies met the inclusion criteria, which resulted in 29 isometric–dynamic change comparisons. The overall pooled effect was 0.13 in favor of dynamic testing; however, the prediction interval ranged from g = −0.49 to 0.75. There was no evidence of bias (P =.825) between isometric and dynamic tests; however, the reliability coefficient was estimated to be 16%, and the coefficient of variation (%) was 109.27. Conclusions: As a range of future effects can be expected when comparing isometric to dynamic strength changes following resistance training, and limited proportionality exists between changes in these 2 strength qualities, there is strong evidence that isometric and dynamic strength represent separate neuromuscular domains. In general, COVID-19-related adaptations that transitioned in-person assessments and interventions to a virtual format were not routinely evaluated. We aimed to conduct a process evaluation to examine the impact of COVID-19-related adaptations on a behavior change intervention designed to increase exercise adherence among Veterans with mobility difficulty. We used secondary data from a nonrandomized study to complete a process evaluation examining the intervention's reach, recruitment, fidelity, dose delivered by physical therapists, and the dose received by the 14 participating Veterans. The physical therapist delivered 95% (133/140) of the study's 10 sessions. Sessions with the lowest delivery dose included Sessions 1 and 10 (86%; n = 12/14). The elements with the lowest dose received included using an exercise journal and developing a postintervention plan (86%; n = 12/14). Our COVID-19 adaptations allowed us to provide our intervention to the majority (67%) of eligible participants without a negative impact on fidelity, dose delivered, or dose received. Exercise is the single most effective strategy to reduce the risk of falls. Online classes have grown in popularity, but the benefits of online classes remain unknown. Zoomers on the Go is a peer-led 12-week exercise program offered twice weekly to adults 50+ years old. The main outcome was lower body strength measured by the 30-s chair stand test. Other outcomes included dropout, attendance, balance, cardiorespiratory fitness, and perceived health. A total of 74 participants (age 66.3 ± 7.1 years) in the online group and 84 participants in the in-person group (age 67.3 ± 7.2 years) completed the program, with attendance for the online group. Both groups significantly improved their 30-s chair stand, cardiorespiratory fitness, and balance (p <.001) with no difference in functional benefits between groups. The purpose of this study was to test the reliability and validity of the UMOVE Mobility Screen in older adults living with dementia using a Rasch analysis and hypothesis testing. The UMOVE Mobility Screen (UMOVE) focuses on nine activities: following commands, muscle strength, and basic functional mobility tasks. Trained evaluators completed assessments on 244 patients, the majority of whom were female (62%), and White (71%). Based on Rasch Analysis, there was evidence of good item and person reliability (indexes > 0.80), good INFIT statistics, and only one item fitting the model based on OUTFIT statistics. Validity was supported based on hypothesis testing. There was no evidence of Differential Item Functioning between races and genders. Item mapping raised concerns about the spread of the items across the full spectrum of mobility assessed in the UMOVE Mobility Screen. The objective of this study was to estimate the extent to which motivational regulations influence physical activity behavior through role identity among people 55 years or older. Participants (N = 409; Mage = 66.29 years [SD = 7.06]) completed online questionnaires to measure motivational regulations, role identity, and the frequency of physical activity in a typical week and in the past month. Mediation analysis using ordinary least squares path analysis revealed that autonomous forms of motivational regulation (positively) and controlled forms of motivational regulation (negatively) influenced role identity, which then positively influenced physical activity behavior. Bootstrap confidence intervals (95%) for the indirect effects (a × b) based on 5,000 bootstrap samples were entirely above or below zero. These findings point to future experimental evaluations of interventions aiming at both increasing and decreasing autonomous and controlled motivational regulations, respectively, to promote physical activity behavior through role identity. Pickleball offers sociopsychological and physical activity benefits for older adults but lacks racial diversity. The purpose of this study was to identify constraints to pickleball participation with Black older adults (65+ years) as well as examine differences based on physical activity and sex. A Qualtrics panel included Black older adults (N = 292) who have heard of pickleball and are physically able to play but have not played. Results found Knowledge, Accessibility, Interpersonal, and Interest were the most salient constraints overall. Multivariate analysis of variance found that those who report low physical activity had significantly higher Interpersonal, Psychological, Costs, and Perceived Racism constraints. Online exercise programming has become increasingly popular in recent years, including for older adults. Instructors hold unique perspectives on such programming that could yield important insights for effective program design and delivery. The purpose of this study was to qualitatively examine instructors' perceptions and experiences teaching exercise classes online to older adults. Using qualitative description, 19 instructors from a community exercise program for seniors completed a one-on-one semistructured interview. We analyzed data using reflexive thematic analysis and generated three main themes: (a) characteristics of effective online instructors, (b) challenges to delivering online exercise programming to older adults, and (c) future of online exercise programming. Most participants enjoyed delivering online exercise classes and developing the unique skills (particularly related to fostering social experiences and engaging with participants) required to be effective online exercise instructors. Adequate body composition is essential for health, function, and independence in older adults. However, standard body composition assessments require complex and costly modalities, limiting their use for early detection of body composition changes and periodic follow-up. This study explored the ability of three practical measures—handgrip strength, five times sit-to-stand test, and upper limb loading during seated push-up test (ULL-SPUT)—to determine body composition in 109 older adults with and without sarcopenia. Participants (average age 76 years) were cross-sectionally measured for outcomes of the study. The ULL-SPUT and handgrip strength, but not the five times sit-to-stand test, significantly correlated with body composition (rs, r =.297–.827, p <.01). The ULL-SPUT, in combination with demographic data, could determine body composition up to 82%. Therefore, the ULL-SPUT may be a practical preliminary measure to identify older adults for whom standard body composition assessments and follow-up would prove timely and beneficial. Purpose: Few data are available on sleep characteristics of elite track-and-field athletes. Our study aimed to assess (1) differences in sleep between sexes and among different track-and-field disciplines, (2) the effect of individualized sleep-hygiene strategies on athletes' sleep parameters, and (3) daytime nap characteristics in track-and-field athletes. Methods: Sleep characteristics of 16 elite Olympic-level track-and-field athletes (male: n = 8; female: n = 8) were assessed during the preseason period, at baseline (T0), and during the in-season period, after the adoption of individualized sleep-hygiene strategies (T1). Sleep parameters were objectively monitored by actigraphy for a minimum of 10 days, for each athlete, at both T0 and T1. A total of 702 nights were analyzed (T0 = 425; T1 = 277). Results: Female athletes displayed better sleep efficiency (88.69 [87.69–89.68] vs 91.72 [90.99–92.45]; P =.003, effect size [ES]: 0.44), lower sleep latency (18.99 [15.97–22.00] vs 6.99 [5.65–8.32]; P <.001, ES: 0.65), higher total sleep time (07:03 [06:56–07:11] vs 07:18 [07:10–07:26]; P =.030, ES: 0.26), earlier bedtime (00:24 [00:16–00:32] vs 00:13 [00:04–00:22]; P =.027, ES: 0.18), and lower nap frequency (P <.001) than male athletes. Long-distance runners had earlier bedtime (00:10 [00:03–00:38] vs 00:36 [00:26–00:46]; P <.001, ES: 0.41) and wake-up time (07:41 [07:36–07:46] vs 08:18 [08:07–08:30]; P <.001, ES: 0.61), higher nap frequency, but lower sleep efficiency (88.79 [87.80–89.77] vs 91.67 [90.95–92.38]; P =.013, ES: 0.44), and longer sleep latency (18.89 [15.94–21.84] vs 6.69 [5.33–8.06]; P <.001, ES: 0.67) than athletes of short-term disciplines. Furthermore, sleep-hygiene strategies had a positive impact on athletes' total sleep time (429.2 [423.5–434.8] vs 451.4 [444.2–458.6]; P <.001, ES: 0.37) and sleep latency (14.33 [12.34–16.32] vs 10.67 [8.66–12.68]; P =.017, ES: 0.19). Conclusions: Sleep quality and quantity were suboptimal at baseline in Olympic-level track-and-field athletes. Large differences were observed in sleep characteristics between sexes and among different track-and-field disciplines. Given the positive effect of individualized sleep-hygiene strategies on athlete's sleep, coaches should implement sleep education sessions in the daily routine of top-level athletes. Purpose: To determine the minimum number of events (training or matches) for producing valid acceleration–speed (AS) profiles from global navigation satellite system (GNSS) data. Methods: Nine elite female soccer players participated in a 4-week training camp consisting of 19 events. AS profile metrics calculated from different combinations of athlete events were compared to force–velocity (FV) profile metrics from 2 × 40-m stand-alone sprint effort trials, using the same GNSS 10-Hz technology. Force–velocity profiles were calculated, from which AS profiles were obtained. AS profiles from training and matches were generated by plotting acceleration and speed points and performing a regression through the maximal points to obtain the AS metrics (theoretical maximal speed, x-intercept [in meters per second], theoretical maximal acceleration, y-intercept [in meters per second squared], and the slope per second). A linear mixed model was performed with the AS metrics as the outcome variables, the number of events as a fixed effect, and the participant identifier as a mixed effect. Dunnett post hoc multiple comparisons were used to compare the means of each number of event grouping (1–19 events) to those estimated from the dedicated sprint test. Results: Theoretical maximal speed and theoretical maximal acceleration means were no longer significantly different from the isolated sprint reference with 9 to 19 (small to trivial differences = −0.31 to −0.04 m·s−1, P =.12–.99) and 6 to 19 (small differences = −0.4 to −0.28 m·s−2, P =.06–.79) events, and the slopes were no longer different with 1 to 19 events (trivial differences = 0.06–0.03 s−1, P =.35–.99). Conclusions: AS profiles can be estimated from a minimum of 9 days of tracking data. Future research should investigate methodology resulting in AS profiles estimated from fewer events. Purpose: In sprint biathlon, a J-shaped pacing pattern is commonly used. We investigated whether biathletes with a fast-start pacing pattern increase time-trial skiing and shooting performance by pacing more evenly. Methods: Thirty-eight highly trained biathletes (∼21 y, 27 men) performed an individual 7.5 (3 × 2.5 km for women) or 10-km (3 × 3.3 km for men) time trial on roller skis with a self-selected pacing strategy (day 1). Prone (after lap 1) and standing shooting (after lap 2) stages were performed using paper targets. Based on their pacing strategy in the first time trial (ratio between the initial ∼800-m segment pace on lap 1 and average ∼800-m segment pace on laps 1–3), participants were divided into an intervention group with the fastest starting pace (INT, n = 20) or a control group with a more conservative starting pace (CON, n = 18). On day 2, INT was instructed to reduce their starting pace, while CON was instructed to maintain their day 1 strategy. Results: INT increased their overall time-trial performance more than CON from day 1 to day 2 (mean ± 95% CI; 1.5% ± 0.7% vs 0.0% ± 0.9%, P =.02). From day 1 to day 2, INT reduced their starting pace (5.0% ± 1.5%, P <.01), with reduced ratings of perceived exertion during lap 1 (P <.05). For CON, no change was found for starting pace (−0.8% ± 1.2%) or ratings of perceived exertion between days. No differences were found for shooting performance for either group. Purpose: Advanced footwear technology is prevalent in distance running, with research focusing on these "super shoes" in competitive athletes, with less understanding of their value for slower runners. The aim of this study was to compare physiological and biomechanical variables between a model of super shoes (Saucony Endorphin Speed 2) and regular running shoes (Saucony Cohesion 13) in recreational athletes. Methods: We measured peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) in 10 runners before testing each subject 4 times in a randomly ordered crossover design (ie, Endorphin shoe or Cohesion shoe, running at 65% or 80% of velocity at VO2peak [vVO2peak]). We recorded video data using a high-speed camera (300 Hz) to calculate vertical and leg stiffnesses. Results: 65% vVO2peak was equivalent to a speed of 9.4 km·h−1 (0.4), whereas 80% vVO2peak was equivalent to 11.5 km·h−1 (0.5). Two-way mixed-design analysis of variance showed that oxygen consumption in the Endorphin shoe was 3.9% lower than in the Cohesion shoe at 65% vVO2peak, with an interaction between shoes and speed (P =.020) meaning an increased difference of 5.0% at 80% vVO2peak. There were small increases in vertical and leg stiffnesses in the Endorphin shoes (P <.001); the Endorphin shoe condition also showed trivial to moderate differences in step length, step rate, contact time, and flight time (P <.001). Conclusions: There was a physiological benefit to running in the super shoes even at the slower speed. Purpose: To verify whether training the iron cross (IC) with assistive devices (herdos; HIC) and added external load (LHIC) to equate the moments of force developed on the rings could be considered an intermediate step between the nonoverloaded herdos situation (HIC) and the IC performed on the rings. Methods: Relative levels of surface electromyography (sEMG) activity were normalized with respect to a standing IC before comparing gymnasts who can perform the IC on the rings (achievers) and gymnast who cannot (nonachievers) in the 2 herdos conditions (HIC and LHIC). Seven muscles were chosen for sEMG analysis, namely, pectoralis major (PM), latissimus dorsi, teres major, lower trapezius, serratus anterior, biceps brachii (BB), and triceps brachii. Additionally, 3 indices were calculated to measure levels of coactivation: Elbowidx, Scapulaidx, and Shoulderidx. Results: The bigger magnitude of differences in sEMG activity among situations was found for the PM and BB (F ≥ 30.7; P <.001). When comparing the global and the PM, teres major, BB, and triceps brachii activity across groups, nonachievers activated their musculature to a greater extent than the achievers independently of the herdos situation (P ≤.046). Achievers' Elbowidx was the only index that was significantly higher (P ≤.005) in the IC in comparison to LHIC and HIC. Conclusion: sEMG activity of PM and BB was particularly sensitive between situations, independently of the level of achievement. We recommend training the IC by adding external load in the herdos situation to increase muscle activity to levels closer to the rings situation but avoiding the potential factor of injuries. The hamstring plays an important role in reducing loads born by the anterior cruciate ligament. As anterior cruciate ligament injuries occur rapidly after ground contact, how the hamstring is activated prior to landing can influence injury risk. The purpose was to determine sex-related differences in hamstring activation immediately before landing and the effect of fatigue on "preactivation." Twenty-four participants (13 males and 11 females, age = 24.3 [6.5] y, mass = 72.2 [19.3] kg, height = 169 [9.7] cm) participated in this study. Participants completed a drop-vertical jump protocol before and after a lower body fatigue protocol. Hamstring electromyography (EMG) amplitude at 5 periods prior to landing, peak vertical ground reactions forces (in newtons/body weight), rate of loading (in body weight/second), and landing error scoring system were measured. Females had higher EMG amplitude before and after fatigue (P <.024), with decreased EMG amplitude for both sexes after fatigue (P =.025). There was no change on vertical ground reaction force, rate of loading, or landing error scoring system. Males and females demonstrated similar landing performance before and after fatigue but have different hamstring neuromuscular coordination strategies. Shoulder complex stability can be estimated in vivo through the analysis of helical axes (HAs) dispersion during upper limb movements. The study aimed at investigating test–retest reliability of shoulder HAs dispersion parameters during upper limb tasks. Twenty healthy volunteers performed 2 intransitive (shoulder flexion and rotation) and one transitive (combing) tasks with the dominant and nondominant upper limbs during 2 recording sessions at 1-week distance. Kinematics was detected through an optoelectronic system. Mean distance and mean angle (MA) were adopted as HAs dispersion indexes. Reliability was excellent for mean distance (intraclass correlation coefficient [ICC]:.91) and MA (ICC:.92) during dominant flexion, and good for MA (ICC:.90) during nondominant flexion. Moderate reliability was found for HAs parameters during rotation (ICCs from.70 to.59), except for MA during dominant rotation where reliability was poor. Reliability was good for mean distance (ICC:.83) and moderate for MA (ICC:.67) during the dominant combing task, whereas no reliability was found during the nondominant combing task. HAs dispersion parameters revealed high reliability during simple intransitive tasks with the dominant limb. Reliability decreased with the increase in task complexity due to the increase in movement variability. Chronic exposure to high tibiofemoral joint (TFJ) contact forces can be detrimental to knee joint health. Load carriage increases TFJ contact forces, but it is unclear whether medial and lateral tibiofemoral compartments respond similarly to incremental load carriage. The purpose of our study was to compare TFJ contact forces when walking with 15% and 30% added body weight. Young healthy adults (n = 24) walked for 5 minutes with no load, 15% load, and 30% load on an instrumented treadmill. Total, medial, and lateral TFJ contact peak forces and impulses were calculated via an inverse dynamics informed musculoskeletal model. Results of 1-way repeated measures analyses of variance (α =.05) demonstrated total, medial, and lateral TFJ first peak contact forces and impulses increased significantly with increasing load. Orthogonal polynomial trends demonstrated that the 30% loading condition led to a curvilinear increase in total and lateral TFJ impulses, whereas medial first peak TFJ contact forces and impulses responded linearly to increasing load. The total and lateral compartment impulse increased disproportionally with load carriage, while the medial did not. The medial and lateral compartments responded differently to increasing load during walking, warranting further investigation because it may relate to risk of osteoarthritis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
