Quantum information theory has considerably helped in the understanding of quantum many-body systems. The role of quantum correlations and in particular, bipartite entanglement, has become crucial to characterise, classify and simulate quantum many body systems. Furthermore, the scaling of entanglement has inspired modifications to numerical techniques for the simulation of many-body systems leading to the, now established, area of tensor networks. However, the notions and methods brought by quantum information do not end with bipartite entanglement. There are other forms of correlations embedded in the ground, excited and thermal states of quantum many-body systems that also need to be explored and might be utilised as potential resources for quantum technologies. The aim of this work is to review the most recent developments regarding correlations in quantum many-body systems focussing on multipartite entanglement, quantum nonlocality, quantum discord, mutual information but also other non classical measures of correlations based on quantum coherence. We propose a system made of three quantum harmonic oscillators as a compact quantum engine for producing mechanical work. The three oscillators play respectively the role of the hot bath, the working medium and the cold bath. The working medium performs an Otto cycle during which its frequency is changed and it is sequentially coupled to each of the two other oscillators. As the two environments are finite, the lifetime of the machine is finite and after a number of cycles it stops working and needs to be reset. We analyse the entanglement and quantum discord generated during the strokes and show that high work generation is always accompanied by large quantum correlations., Comment: Updated, published version. First order quantum phase transitions (1QPTs) are signaled, in the thermodynamic limit, by discontinuous changes in the ground state properties. These discontinuities affect expectation values of observables, including spatial correlations. When a 1QPT is crossed in the vicinity of a second order one (2QPT), due to the correlation length divergence of the latter, the corresponding ground state is modified and it becomes increasingly difficult to determine the order of the transition when the size of the system is finite. Here we show that, in such situations, it is possible to apply finite size scaling to entanglement measures, as it has recently been done for the order parameters and the energy gap, in order to recover the correct thermodynamic limit. Such a finite size scaling can unambigously discriminate between first and second order phase transitions in the vicinity of multricritical points even when the singularities displayed by entanglement measures lead to controversial results.

We study the ultimate bounds on the estimation of temperature for an interacting quantum system. We consider two coupled bosonic modes that are assumed to be thermal and using quantum estimation theory establish the role the Hamiltonian parameters play in thermometry. We show that in the case of a conserved particle number the interaction between the modes leads to a decrease in the overall sensitivity to temperature, while interestingly, if particle exchange is allowed with the thermal bath the converse is true. We explain this dichotomy by examining the energy spectra. Finally, we devise experimentally implementable thermometry schemes that rely only on locally accessible information from the total system, showing that almost Heisenberg limited precision can still be achieved, and we address the (im)possibility for multiparameter estimation in the system., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. We present an in-depth study of the non-equilibrium statistics of the irreversible work produced during sudden quenches in proximity to the structural linear-zigzag transition of ion Coulomb crystals in 1+1 dimensions. By employing both an analytical approach based on a harmonic expansion and numerical simulations, we show the divergence of the average irreversible work in proximity to the transition. We show that the non-analytic behaviour of the work fluctuations can be characterized in terms of the critical exponents of the quantum Ising chain. We propose a method to experimentally measure the internal energy of a system of ultracold atoms trapped in optical lattices by coupling them to the fields of two optical cavities. We show that the tunnelling and self-interaction terms of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian can be mapped to the field and photon number of each cavity, respectively. We compare the energy estimated using this method with numerical results obtained using the density matrix renormalisation group algorithm. A spin-1 atomic gas in an optical lattice, in the unit-filling Mott Insulator (MI) phase and in the presence of disordered spin-dependent interaction, is considered. In this regime, at zero temperature, the system is well described by a disordered rotationally-invariant spin-1 bilinear-biquadratic model. We study, via the density matrix renormalization group algorithm, a bounded disorder model such that the spin interactions can be locally either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. Random interactions induce the appearance of a disordered ferromagnetic phase characterized by a non-vanishing value of spin-glass order parameter across the boundary between a ferromagnetic phase and a dimer phase exhibiting random singlet order. We present a detailed study of the conduction properties of a molecular wire where hopping processes between electronic sites are coupled to a vibrational mode of the molecule. The latter is sandwiched between two electronic leads at finite temperatures. We show that the electro-mechanical coupling can lead to a strong enhancement of the lead-to-lead conduction. Moreover, under suitable driving of the molecular vibrational mode, the device can act as a transistor passing sharply from enhanced conduction to short-circuit configuration., Comment: 10 pages with appendix and 5 figures

We examine the dynamics of nearest-neighbor bipartite concurrence and total correlations in the spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model with random fields. We show, starting from factorized random initial states, that the concurrence can suffer entanglement sudden death in the long time limit and therefore may not be a useful indicator of the properties of the system. In contrast, we show that the total correlations capture the dynamics more succinctly, and further reveal a fundamental difference in the dynamics governed by the ergodic versus many-body localized phases, with the latter exhibiting dynamical oscillations. Finally, we consider an initial state composed of several singlet pairs and show that by fixing the correlation properties, while the dynamics do not reveal noticeable differences between the phases, the long-time values of the correlation measures appear to indicate the critical region., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. We investigate the potential for controlling a non-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a one-dimensional optical superlattice. Our control strategy combines Bloch oscillations originating from accelerating the lattice and from time-dependent control of the superlattice parameters. We investigate two experimentally viable scenarios, very low and very high potential depths. We are able to exhibit a wide range of control over energy band populations using the superlattice control parameters. With this analysis we consider several examples of quantum state preparation in the superlattice structure that may be difficult to achieve in a regular lattice., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures. We study work extraction from the Dicke model achieved using simple unitary cyclic transformations keeping into account both a non optimal unitary protocol, and the energetic cost of creating the initial state. By analyzing the role of entanglement, we find that highly entangled states can be inefficient for energy storage when considering the energetic cost of creating the state. Such surprising result holds notwithstanding the fact that the criticality of the model at hand can sensibly improve the extraction of work. While showing the advantages of using a many-body system for work extraction, our results demonstrate that entanglement is not necessarily advantageous for energy storage purposes, when non optimal processes are considered. We calculate the first two moments and full probability distribution of the work performed on a system of bosonic particles in a two-mode Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian when the self-interaction term is varied instantaneously or with a finite-time ramp. In the instantaneous case, we show how the irreversible work scales differently depending on whether the system is driven to the Josephson or Fock regime of the bosonic Josephson junction. In the finite-time case, we use optimal control techniques to substantially decrease the irreversible work to negligible values. Our analysis can be implemented in present-day experiments with ultracold atoms and we show how to relate the work statistics to that of the population imbalance of the two modes., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures. By making use of a recently proposed framework for the inference of thermodynamic irreversibility in bosonic quantum systems, we experimentally measure and characterize the entropy production rates in the non-equilibrium steady state of two different physical systems -- a micro-mechanical resonator and a Bose-Einstein condensate -- each coupled to a high finesse cavity and hence also subject to optical loss. Key features of our setups, such as cooling of the mechanical resonator and signatures of a structural quantum phase transition in the condensate are reflected in the entropy production rates. The emerging field of quantum thermodynamics is contributing important results and insights into archetypal many-body problems, including quantum phase transitions. Still, the question whether out-of-equilibrium quantities, such as fluctuations of work, exhibit critical scaling after a sudden quench in a closed system has remained elusive. Here, we take a novel approach to the problem by studying a quench across an impurity quantum critical point. By performing density matrix renormalization group computations on the two-impurity Kondo model, we are able to establish that the irreversible work produced in a quench exhibits finite-size scaling at quantum criticality. This scaling faithfully predicts the equilibrium critical exponents for the crossover length and the order parameter of the model, and, moreover, implies a new exponent for the rescaled irreversible work. We numerically analyse the behavior of the full distribution of collective observables in quantum spin chains. While most of previous studies of quantum critical phenomena are limited to the first moments, here we demonstrate how quantum fluctuations at criticality lead to highly non-Gaussian distributions thus violating the central limit theorem. Interestingly, we show that the distributions for different system sizes collapse after scaling on the same curve for a wide range of transitions: first and second order quantum transitions and transitions of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type.
