An ongoing prospective study is acquiring preoperative imaging data for men with prostate cancer (PCa) using the molecular imaging agent [ F]-DCFPyL targeted against prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA). To date, six men (of a planned accrual of 24) with clinically localized, biopsy-proven PCa have undergone preoperative [ F]-DCFPyL positron emission tomography (PET) imaging and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging acquired using a hybrid PET/MRI system. Lesions identified by [ F]-DCFPyL uptake on PET/MRI were characterized in terms of maximum standardized uptake value (SUV ) and volume using a boundary threshold of 40% SUV . Following surgery, all prostatectomy specimens were processed using a whole-mount technique for accurate deformable co-registration and correlation with PCa foci defined on digitized pathology images. Well-defined intraprostatic dominant lesions were identified by [ F]-DCFPyL PET/MRI (mean SUV 11.4 ± 8.25; mean volume 2.2 ± 2.4 cm ) in all six men. Co-registered digitized whole-mount pathology for the first case revealed that intense [ F]-DCFPyL uptake (SUV 27 ± 1.1 cm ) and multiparametric MRI changes (Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System score of 4) were highly correlated with a 0.5-cm dominant (largest) lesion with Gleason pattern 4 PCa in the right mid peripheral zone. A smaller focus (0.01 cm ) of lower-grade PCa (Gleason pattern 3) had much lower uptake (SUV 2.7). These early prospective data show that dominant intraprostatic lesions could be identified in all six men using [ F]-DCFPyL as an imaging probe. Trial accrual will continue to quantify in terms of spatial concordance the ability of [ F]-DCFPyL to identify the location and characterize the grade of intraprostatic cancer foci in clinically localized PCa. Patient summary: Positron emission tomography using a novel probe called [ F]-DCFPyL directed against the prostate-specific membrane antigen protein was able to identify locations of prostate cancer in the prostate glands of men undergoing imaging before surgery. In the future, such imaging may allow better targeting of treatment to the portion of the prostate containing the most aggressive components of cancer rather than treating the whole prostate in a uniform fashion. Experiences of contingent responsivity during shared book reading predict better learning outcomes. However, it is unclear whether contingent responsivity from a digital book could provide similar support for children. The effects on story recall and engagement interacting with a digital book that responded contingently on children's vocalizations (contingent book) were investigated, with a focus on the role of individual differences in attention. The study used a within-subject design with 3 experiments from 90 3- to 5-year-old children. Children were presented with a contingent book and 3 noncontingent control conditions: a board book (Experiment 1), a static digital book (Experiment 2), and an animated book (Experiment 3). The use of the contingent book significantly increased children's story recall and was found to be especially useful for children with less developed attention regulation. Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology causes microstructural changes in the brain. These changes, if quantified with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), could be studied for use as an early biomarker for AD. The aim of our study was to determine if T(1) relaxation, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and quantitative magnetization transfer imaging (qMTI) metrics could reveal changes within the hippocampus and surrounding white matter structures in ex vivo transgenic mouse brains overexpressing human amyloid precursor protein with the Swedish mutation. Delineation of hippocampal cell layers using DTI color maps allows more detailed analysis of T(1)-weighted imaging, DTI, and qMTI metrics, compared with segmentation of gross anatomy based on relaxation images, and with analysis of DTI or qMTI metrics alone. These alterations are observed in the absence of robust intracellular Aβ accumulation or plaque deposition as revealed by histology. This work demonstrates that multiparametric quantitative MRI methods are useful for characterizing changes within the hippocampal substructures and surrounding white matter tracts of mouse models of AD.

English-learning infants attend to lexical stress when learning new words. Attention to lexical stress might be beneficial for word learning by providing an indication of the grammatical class of that word. English disyllabic nouns commonly have trochaic (strong-weak) stress, whereas English disyllabic verbs commonly have iambic (weak-strong) stress. We explored whether 17-month-old infants use word stress to resolve an ambiguous labeling event where objects and actions are equally plausible referents. Infants were habituated to 2 words paired with 2 objects, with each object performing a distinct path action. They were subsequently tested on (a) a change in object but not path action or (b) a change in path action but not the object. When infants were taught verb-friendly iambic labels, their looking times increased both when the action switched and when the object switched. Infants who were taught noun-friendly trochaic labels demonstrated an increase in looking time only when the object switched. These results demonstrate that in ambiguous labeling events infants map iambic labels to both actions and objects, and trochaic labels to the objects but not to the actions, suggesting a bias for words with trochaic stress to refer to objects. Seventeen-month-old infants can use trochaic lexical stress to guide their word learning in ambiguous situations, but iambic stress cues may not preferentially guide infants' mappings of actions or objects. Block detector designs, utilizing a pixelated scintillator array coupled to a photosensor array in a light-sharing design, are commonly used for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging applications. In practice, the spatial sampling of these designs is limited by the crystal pitch, which must be large enough for individual crystals to be resolved in the detector flood image. Replacing the conventional 2D scintillator array with an array of phoswich elements, each consisting of an optically coupled side-by-side scintillator pair, may improve spatial sampling in one direction of the array without requiring resolving smaller crystal elements. To test the feasibility of this design, a 4 × 4 phoswich array was constructed, with each phoswich element consisting of two optically coupled, 3 . 17 × 1 . 58 × 10 mm 3 LSO crystals co-doped with cerium and calcium. The amount of calcium doping was varied to create a ‘fast’ LSO crystal with decay time of 32.9 ns and a ‘slow’ LSO crystal with decay time of 41.2 ns. Using a Hamamatsu R8900U-00-C12 position-sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMT) and a CAEN V1720 250 MS/s waveform digitizer, we were able to show effective discrimination of the fast and slow LSO crystals in the phoswich array. Although a side-by-side phoswich array is feasible, reflections at the crystal boundary due to a mismatch between the refractive index of the optical adhesive ( n = 1 . 5 ) and LSO ( n = 1 . 82 ) caused it to behave optically as an 8 × 4 array rather than a 4 × 4 array. Direct coupling of each phoswich element to individual photodetector elements may be necessary with the current phoswich array design. Alternatively, in order to implement this phoswich design with a conventional light sharing PET block detector, a high refractive index optical adhesive is necessary to closely match the refractive index of LSO.

Isolates of Cercospora sojina, causal agent of frogeye leaf spot of soybean (Glycine max), were collected across Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, and Virginia and were evaluated for quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicide resistance. Collection of these isolates from these 14 states occurred between 2010 and 2017. QoI fungicide-resistant C. sojina isolates were detected in all 14 states surveyed and represent a total of 240 counties or parishes. In 2017, these 240 counties and parishes represented approximately 13% of the harvested soybean hectares in the United States. In light of this widespread occurrence of QoI fungicide-resistant C. sojina isolates, management of frogeye leaf spot should focus on integrated management practices such as planting resistant soybean cultivars, rotating with nonhost crops, and tilling to speed up decomposition of infested soybean residue. When foliar fungicide application is warranted, fungicide products that contain active ingredients from chemistry classes other than the QoI class should be applied for frogeye leaf spot management.

Purpose The clinical utility of FDG-PET in diagnosing frontotemporal dementia (FTD) has been well demonstrated over the past decades. On the contrary, the diagnostic value of arterial spin labelling (ASL) MRI – a relatively new technique – in clinical diagnosis of FTD has yet to be confirmed. Using simultaneous PET/MRI, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of ASL in identifying pathological abnormalities in FTD (FTD) to determine whether ASL can provide similar diagnostic value as FDG-PET. Methods ASL and FDG-PET images were compared in 10 patients with FTD and 10 healthy older adults. Qualitative and quantitative measures of diagnostic equivalency were used to determine the diagnostic utility of ASL compared to FDG-PET. Sensitivity, specificity, and inter-rater reliability were calculated for each modality from scores of subjective visual ratings and from analysis of regional mean values in thirteen a priori regions of interest (ROI). To determine the extent of concordance between modalities in each patient, individual statistical maps generated from comparison of each patient to controls were compared between modalities using the Jaccard similarity index (JI). Results Visual assessments revealed lower sensitivity, specificity and inter-rater reliability for ASL (66.67%/62.12%/0.2) compared to FDG-PET (88.43%/90.91%/0.61). Across all regions, ASL performed lower than FDG-PET in discriminating patients from controls (areas under the receiver operating curve: ASL = 0.75 and FDG-PET = 0.87). In all patients, ASL identified patterns of reduced perfusion consistent with FTD, but areas of hypometabolism exceeded hypoperfused areas (group-mean JI = 0.30 ± 0.22). Conclusion This pilot study demonstrated that ASL can detect similar spatial patterns of abnormalities in individual FTD patients compared to FDG-PET, but its sensitivity and specificity for discriminant diagnosis of a patient from healthy individuals remained unmatched to FDG-PET. Further studies at the individual level are required to confirm the clinical role of ASL in FTD management., Highlights • ASL-CBF and FDG-PET are moderate-to-strongly correlated in FTD brains. • FDG-PET produced higher specificity, sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy compared to ASL-CBF. • In all patients, hypometabolic regions identified in individual statistical maps extended beyond hypoperfused regions.

OpenPET has recently been developed as a modular, flexible data acquisition (DAQ) platform for nuclear imaging applications. We present a description of the system architecture and DAQ implementation using OpenPET for a small animal positron emission tomography (PET) insert designed for hybrid PET/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 7T. The PET insert consists of 16 silicon photomultiplier-based detector modules, creating a total of 64 analog channels. The OpenPET system used consisted of four 16 channel detector boards connected to one support board (SB), in turn connected to a Host PC via a USB2.0 interface. Both detector and SBs contain field-programmable gate arrays, allowing customized firmware for both. The initial OpenPET firmware release allowed data capture in oscilloscope mode only, limiting data collection to a system single events rate of 18.8 kcps. Customized firmware changes were implemented in four revisions, resulting in a final version using an 8 byte data packet and supporting a system single events rate of > 4.5 Mcps. Noise equivalent count rate (NECR) results are presented for each firmware revision, showing improvement from peak NECR of 1.0 kcps @ 0.6 MBq to 19.5 kcps @ 15.3 MBq. The final version of the firmware enables its routine use in small animal PET/MRI.

Objective Hybrid PET/MRI may improve detection of seizure-onset zone (SOZ) in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), however, concerns over PET bias from MRI-based attenuation correction (MRAC) have limited clinical adoption of PET/MRI. This study evaluated the diagnostic equivalency and potential clinical value of PET/MRI against PET/CT in DRE. Materials and methods MRI, FDG-PET and CT images (n = 18) were acquired using a hybrid PET/MRI and a CT scanner. To assess diagnostic equivalency, PET was reconstructed using MRAC (RESOLUTE) and CT-based attenuation correction (CTAC) to generate PET/MRI and PET/CT images, respectively. PET/MRI and PET/CT images were compared qualitatively through visual assessment and quantitatively through regional standardized uptake value (SUV) and z-score assessment. Diagnostic accuracy and sensitivity of PET/MRI and PET/CT for SOZ detection were calculated through comparison to reference standards (clinical hypothesis and histopathology, respectively). Results Inter-reader agreement in visual assessment of PET/MRI and PET/CT images was 78 % and 81 %, respectively. PET/MRI and PET/CT were strongly correlated in mean SUV (r = 0.99, p Conclusion We demonstrate here that PET/MRI with optimal MRAC can yield similar diagnostic performance as PET/CT. Nevertheless, further exploration of the potential added value of PET/MRI is necessary before clinical adoption of PET/MRI for epilepsy imaging.

Early linguistic experiences are intimately tied to later language learning outcomes (e.g., Chilosi et al., 2013; Kaushanskaya & Marian, 2009b). The underlying neural and cognitive processes mediating this relationship remain unclear. Pierce, Genesee, Delcenserie, and Morgan (2017) propose that the phonological working memory (PWM) system is the critical component responsible for linking early linguistic experiences to later language development. Their argument arises from research demonstrating that exposure to linguistic input early in life shapes the kinds of phonological representations that are formed about the sounds within one's native language (Kuhl, 2004; Majerus et al., 2005; Mody, Schwartz, Gravel, & Ruben, 1999; Nittrouer & Burton, 2005). These phonological representations, which the authors believe to be created and stored using the PWM system (Gathercole & Baddeley, 1989), are highly predictive of later language outcomes (Bernhardt, Kemp, & Werker, 2007; Kuhl, 2010; Molfese & Molfese, 1985; Tsao, Liu, & Kuhl, 2004). Explaining language development via memory processes has many benefits. For instance, drawing on a large extant literature on memory-related processes allows researchers to make novel predictions about language learning, especially in regard to its connections to other kinds of learning (e.g., Gathercole, 2006). Identifying PWM as a key driver to language development is a useful insight likely to generate much further research, but it may not go far enough in tying language acquisition to more domain-general aspects of the human cognitive architecture. We believe that a complete account of language will require consideration of additional aspects of the human cognitive architecture working alongside the PWM system.

Grape powdery mildew epidemics, caused by Erysiphe necator, are initiated by the release and subsequent germination of ascospores from mature chasmothecia. Interrupting the development of chasmothecia prior to overwintering may reduce or prevent the overwintering of E. necator in vineyards, thereby reducing initial disease incidence observed the following growing season. At the end of the grape growing season in 2014 and 2015, one application of Organic JMS Stylet Oil (Vero Beach, FL) at a rate of 10 ml/liter was applied on four treatment dates using an air-assisted backpack sprayer onto Chardonnay grapevines within a vineyard. Leaves were collected weekly and chasmothecia enumerated from the first observation of chasmothecia primordia development until the onset of rains (approximately 5 weeks). In 2014, all stylet oil treatment plots developed significantly fewer chasmothecia than nontreated control plots in 2014 (P = 0.04), and there were no differences in treatment date observed. No treatment differences were observed in 2015. Because chasmothecia were still produced despite stylet oil treatment, a single post-véraison stylet oil application to interrupt chasmothecia development would not be an economical management option for reduction of grape powdery mildew.

Background Cardiovascular imaging using hybrid positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) requires a radio frequency phased array resonator capable of high acceleration factors in order to achieve the shortest breath-holds while maintaining optimal MRI signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and minimum PET photon attenuation. To our knowledge, the only two arrays used today for hybrid PET/MRI cardiovascular imaging are either incapable of achieving high acceleration or affect the PET photon count greatly. Purpose This study is focused on the evaluation of the MRI performance of a novel third-party prototype 32-channel phased array designed for simultaneous PET/MRI cardiovascular imaging. The study compares the quality parameters of MRI parallel imaging, such as g-factor, noise correlation coefficients, and SNR, to the conventional arrays (mMR 12-channel and MRI-only 32-channel) currently used with hybrid PET/MRI systems. The quality parameters of parallel imaging were estimated for multiple acceleration factors on a phantom and three healthy volunteers. Using a Germanium-68 (Ge-68) phantom, preliminary measurements of PET photon attenuation caused by the novel array were briefly compared to the photon counts produced from no-array measurements. Results The global mean of the g-factor and SNRg produced by the novel 32-channel PET/MRI array were better than those produced by the MRI-only 32-channel array by 5% or more. The novel array has resulted in MRI SNR improvements of > 30% at all acceleration factors, in comparison to the mMR12-channel array. Preliminary evaluation of PET transparency showed less than 5% photon attenuation caused by both anterior and posterior parts of the novel array. Conclusions The MRI performance of the novel PET/MRI 32-channel array qualifies it to be a viable alternative to the conventional arrays for cardiovascular hybrid PET/MRI. A detailed evaluation of the novel array’s PET performance remains to be conducted, but cursory assessment promises significantly reduced attenuation.

Significant advances in positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain imaging in the early detection of dementia indicate that hybrid PET/MRI would be an effective tool to screen for dementia in the population living with lifestyle risk factors. Here we investigate the associated costs and benefits along with the needed imaging infrastructure. A demographic analysis determined the prevalence of dementia and its incidence. The expected value of the screening program was calculated assuming a sensitivity and specificity of 0.9, a prevalence of 0.1, a QALY factor of 0.348, a willingness to pay $114,000 CAD and the cost per PET/MRI scan of $2,000 CAD. It was assumed that each head PET/MRI could screen 3,000 individuals per year. The prevalence of dementia is increasing by almost two-fold every 20 years due to the increased population at ages where dementia is more prevalent. It has been shown that a five-year delay in the incidence of dementia would decrease the prevalence by some 45%. In Canada, a five-year delay corresponds to a health care savings of $27,000 CAD per subject per year. The expected value for screening was estimated at $23,745 CAD. The number of subjects to be screened per year in Canada, USA, and China between 60 and 79 was 11,405,000. The corresponding number of head-only hybrid PET/MRI systems needed is 3,800. A brain PET/MRI screening program is financially justifiable with respect to health care costs and justifies the continuing development of MRI compatible brain PET technology.

Management of grape powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator) and other polycyclic diseases relies on numerous fungicide applications that follow calendar or model-based application intervals, both of which assume that inoculum is always present. Quantitative molecular assays have been previously developed to initiate fungicide applications, and could be used to optimize fungicide application intervals throughout the growing season based on inoculum concentration. Airborne inoculum samplers were placed at one research and six commercial vineyards in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Fungicide applications in all plots were initiated at the first detection of E. necator inoculum, and all subsequent fungicide application intervals were made based the grower’ standard calendar program or based on inoculum concentration. Sixty percent of the $109 million processed red raspberry industry of the United States occurs in northern Washington State. In 2012, late-summer symptoms of vascular wilt and root disease were observed in many raspberry plantings. These symptoms were initially attributed to Verticillium dahliae. However, diagnostic tests for the pathogen were often contradictory and other soilborne pathogens (Phytophthora rubi and Pratylenchus penetrans) or Raspberry bushy dwarf virus (RBDV) might also have been involved. Therefore, a survey was conducted in 2013 and 2014 to (i) establish the incidence and soil population levels of V. dahliae in red raspberry production fields, (ii) compare among diagnostic methods and laboratories for detecting and quantifying V. dahliae from raspberry field soil, and (iii) assess which pathogens are associated with late-summer disease symptoms of raspberry. Plant and soil samples were collected from 51 disease sites and 20 healthy sites located in 24 production fields. Samples were analyzed for the presence and quantity of each pathogen using traditional plating and extraction methods (V. dahliae, P. rubi, and P. penetrans), quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) (V. dahliae and P. rubi), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (RBDV). Results showed that V. dahliae was present in 88% of the production fields and that detection of the pathogen differed by method and by laboratory: qPCR detected V. dahliae in the soil from approximately three times as many sites (51 of 71 total sites) as by plating on NP10 semi-selective medium (15 of 71 total sites). Soil populations of V. dahliae were slightly greater at disease sites, but the pathogen was detected with similar frequency from healthy sites and it was rarely isolated from diseased plants (4%). P. rubi, P. penetrans, and RBDV were also common in production fields (79, 91, and 53% of fields, respectively). Both P. rubi (soil and root samples) and P. penetrans (root populations only), but not RBDV, were more frequently found at disease sites than healthy sites, and the amount of P. rubi detected by qPCR was greater from disease sites than healthy sites. In addition, P. rubi was isolated from 27% of the symptomatic plants located at disease sites. Regardless of detection method, V. dahliae, P. rubi, and P. penetrans, either with or without RBDV, were more likely to co-occur at disease sites (73%) than healthy sites (35%), suggesting that a soilborne disease complex is present in raspberry production fields. Results indicate that P. rubi is the primary pathogen most strongly associated with late-summer symptoms of disease, but root populations of P. penetrans and higher soil populations of V. dahliae may also be of concern. Therefore, disease control methods should focus on all three soilborne pathogens.

Predictive models have been developed in several major grape-growing regions to correlate environmental conditions to Erysiphe necator ascospore release; however, these models may not be broadly applicable in regions with different climatic conditions. To assess ascospore release in near-coastal regions of western Oregon, chasmothecia (syn. cleistothecia) were collected prior to leaf drop and placed onto natural and artificial grape trunk segments and overwintered outside. Ascospore release was monitored for three overwintering seasons using custom impaction spore traps from leaf drop (Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt und Chemische Industrie [BBCH] 97) until the onset of the disease epidemic in the following growing season. Airborne inoculum was concurrently monitored in a naturally infested research vineyard. Weather and ascospore release data were used to assess previously developed models and correlate environmental conditions to ascospore release. Ascospore release was predicted by all models prior to bud break (BBCH 08), and was observed from the first rain event following the start of inoculum monitoring until monitoring ceased. Previously developed models overpredicted ascospore release in the Willamette Valley and predicted exhaustion of inoculum prior to bud break. The magnitude of ascospore release could not be correlated to environmental conditions; thus, a binary ascospore release model was developed where release is a function of the collective occurrence of the following factors within a 24-h period: >6 h of cumulative leaf wetness during temperatures >4°C, precipitation >2.5 mm, and relative humidity >80%. The Oregon model was validated using field-collected ascospore datasets, and predicted ascospore release with 66% accuracy (P = 0.02). Extant methods for estimating ascospore release may not be sufficiently accurate to use as predictive models in wet, temperate climatic regions.

Downy mildews affect important crops and cause severe losses in production worldwide. Accurate identification and monitoring of these plant pathogens, especially at early stages of the disease, is fundamental in achieving effective disease control. The rapid development of molecular methods for diagnosis has provided more specific, fast, reliable, sensitive, and portable alternatives for plant pathogen detection and quantification than traditional approaches. In this review, we provide information on the use of molecular markers, serological techniques, and nucleic acid amplification technologies for downy mildew diagnosis, highlighting the benefits and disadvantages of the technologies and target selection. We emphasize the importance of incorporating information on pathogen variability in virulence and fungicide resistance for disease management and how the development and application of diagnostic assays based on standard and promising technologies, including high-throughput sequencing and genomics, are revolutionizing the development of species-specific assays suitable for in-field diagnosis. Our review provides an overview of molecular detection technologies and a practical guide for selecting the best approaches for diagnosis.

A full-ring PET insert consisting of 16 PET detector modules was designed and constructed to fit within the 114 mm diameter gradient bore of a Bruker 7 T MRI. The individual detector modules contain two silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays, dual-layer offset LYSO crystal arrays, and high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) cables for both signal and power transmission. Several different RF shielding configurations were assessed prior to construction of a fully assembled PET insert using a combination of carbon fibre and copper foil for RF shielding. MR-compatibility measurements included field mapping of the static magnetic field (B 0) and the time-varying excitation field (B 1) as well as acquisitions with multiple pulse sequences: spin echo (SE), rapid imaging with refocused echoes (RARE), fast low angle shot (FLASH) gradient echo, and echo planar imaging (EPI). B 0 field maps revealed a small degradation in the mean homogeneity (+0.1 ppm) when the PET insert was installed and operating. No significant change was observed in the B 1 field maps or the image homogeneity of various MR images, with a 9% decrease in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) observed only in EPI images acquired with the PET insert installed and operating. PET detector flood histograms, photopeak amplitudes, and energy resolutions were unchanged in individual PET detector modules when acquired during MRI operation. There was a small baseline shift on the PET detector signals due to the switching amplifiers used to power MRI gradient pulses. This baseline shift was observable when measured with an oscilloscope and varied as a function of the gradient duty cycle, but had no noticeable effect on the performance of the PET detector modules. Compact front-end electronics and effective RF shielding led to minimal cross-interference between the PET and MRI systems. Both PET detector and MRI performance was excellent, whether operating as a standalone system or a hybrid PET/MRI.

We present the initial results from a small animal PET insert designed to be operated inside a 7T MRI. The insert fits within the 114 mm inner diameter of the Bruker BGA-12S gradient coil while accommodating the Bruker 35 mm volume RF coil (outer diameter 60 mm), both used in the Bruker 70/20 MRI systems. The PET insert is a ring comprising 16 detectors. Each detector has a dual-layer offset (DLO) lutetium-yttrium oxyorthsilicate (LYSO) scintillator array read out by two SensL SPMArray4B SiPM arrays. The DLO scintillator has bottom (top) layers of: $22\times 10$ ( $21 \times 9$ ) crystals of size $1.2 \times 1.2 \times 6$ (4) mm3 for a total of 409 crystals per block, providing an axial extent of 28.17 mm. The detector outputs are multiplexed to four signals using a custom readout board and digitized using the OpenPET data acquisition platform. The detector flood images successfully resolve over 99% of the crystals, with average energy resolution of 12.5 ± 2.0% at 511 keV. Testing of the PET system inside the MRI showed that the PET insert had no effect on MRI image homogeneity and only a small effect on echo planar images (EPI) signal to noise ratio (SNR) (-9%), with neither PET nor MRI images showing obvious artefacts. These acquisitions used the OpenPET operating in “oscilloscope mode” with USB2.0 interface, allowing a maximum total singles event rate of 280 kcps, strongly limiting the count rate capabilities of the system. The PET radial spatial resolution (as measured with a 22Na point source and FBP-3DRP reconstruction) is 1.17 mm at the centre, degrading to 1.86 mm at a 15 mm radial offset. Simultaneous phantom and mouse PET/MR imaging produced good quality images that were free of any obvious artefacts.

Between the first and the second year of life, children improve in their ability to use phonemic contrasts when learning label–object pairings. This improvement may be related to children’s experience with the distribution of phonemes across lexical forms. Because phonemes typically occur in different lexical frames (e.g., /d/ and /t/ in “doggy” and “teddy” rather than “doggy” and “toggy”), familiarity with words makes similar phonemes more distinct through acquired distinctiveness. In a series of simulations, we demonstrate that English input has the distributional characteristics necessary to facilitate use of phonemic contrasts as a function of increasing familiarity with the lexicon. Further, these simulations support a novel prediction: that less common phonemes should take longer to be used productively. We tested this prediction with children between 18 and 25 months, and found that the relatively infrequent /s/ and /z/ contrast takes longer to emerge than frequent contrasts such as /b/–/d/ or /d/–/t/.

Infants and children are generally more successful than adults in learning novel languages, a phenomenon referred to as a critical or sensitive period for language acquisition. One explanation for this critical period is the idea that children have access to a set of language learning processes or mechanisms unavailable to adults. From this perspective, developmental change is explained in terms of a discontinuity of learning processes. We suggest that this is not the only possible explanation for developmental change in language learning outcomes. Instead, we propose that the mechanisms underlying language acquisition (in particular, we highlight statistical learning) are largely continuous across the lifespan. From this perspective, developmental change is explained in terms of experience, differences in the input with age, and maturational changes in the cognitive architecture supporting learning, even while the learning process itself operates continuously across developmental time. In the Canadian Rocky Mountains, the gray wolf ( Canis lupus ) has experienced range contractions and expansions, which can greatly affect pack stability as well as population structure. In addition, this area has a highly heterogeneous landscape that may form barriers to dispersal. To understand factors affecting pack structure and large-scale gene flow across the Rocky Mountains, we examined wolf genetic structure using 1,981 noninvasive and invasively collected samples. We sampled over 44 packs in Alberta and British Columbia and, from these, identified 540 individuals based on 12 microsatellites. Relatedness of individuals within packs was greater than between packs, and female relatedness was greater than males suggesting strong pack structure and female philopatry. Relatedness within packs was greater near major roads suggesting decreased dispersal from natal packs with proximity to roads. Across the study area, 2 significantly differentiated genetic clusters were identified, corresponding to a north/south split. Landcover distance was a significant correlate for 2 of 4 genetic distance measures, where packs in the north were in areas of dense coniferous forest, while packs in the south were primarily in open coniferous forest. These landcover differences suggest natal associations or could relate to prey distribution. Fine-scale investigation of pack dynamics across this continuous distribution, together with large-scale estimators of population structure, highlights different drivers of gene flow at the pack and population level.

BackgroundInflammatory cardiac disorders, in particular, sarcoidosis, play an important role in left ventricular dysfunction, conduction abnormalities, and arrhythmias. In this study, we compared the imaging characteristics and diagnostic information obtained when patients were imaged sequentially with PET/CT and then with hybrid PET/MRI on the same day following a single18F-FDG injection.MethodsTen patients with known or suspected sarcoidosis underwent imaging in sequence of (a)99mTc-MIBI, (b)18F-FDG with PET/CT, and (c)18F-FDG with 3T PET/MRI. Images were compared quantitatively by determination of SUVmaxand SUV on a voxel by voxel basis, and qualitatively by two experienced observers.ResultsWhen both platforms were compared quantitatively, similar data for the evaluation of enhanced18F-FDG uptake were obtained. Qualitatively, there were (1) several instances of normal perfusion with delayed enhancement and/or focal18F-FDG uptake, (2) comparable enhanced18F-FDG uptake on PET/CT vs. PET/MRI, and (3) diversity in disease patterns with delayed enhancement only, increased18F-FDG uptake only, or both.ConclusionIn this limited patient study, PET/CT and PET/MR provided similar diagnostic data for18F-FDG uptake, and the concurrent acquisition of MR images provided further insight into the disease process.

Deflecting biomineralized crystals attached to vestibular hair cells are necessary for maintaining balance. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are useful organisms to study these biomineralized crystals called otoliths, as many required genes are homologous to human otoconial development. We sought to identify and characterize the causative gene in a trio of mutants,no content (nco)andcorkscrew (csr), andvanished (vns), which fail to develop otoliths during early ear development. We show thatnco, csr, andvnshave potentially deleterious mutations in polyketide synthase (pks1), a multi-modular protein that has been previously implicated in biomineralization events in chordates and echinoderms. We found that Otoconin-90 (Oc90) expression within the otocyst is normal inncoandcsr; therefore, it is not sufficient for otolith biomineralization in zebrafish. Similarly, normal localization of Otogelin, a protein required for otolith tethering in the otolithic membrane, is not sufficient for Oc90 attachment. Furthermore, eNOS signaling and Endothelin-1 signaling were the most up- and down-regulated pathways during otolith agenesis innco, respectively. Our results demonstrate distinct processes for otolith nucleation and biomineralization in vertebrates and will be a starting point for models that are independent of Oc90-mediated seeding. This study will serve as a basis for investigating the role of eNOS signaling and Endothelin-1 signaling during otolith formation.

Although PET with 15O-water is the gold standard for imaging cerebral blood flow (CBF), quantification requires measuring the arterial input function (AIF), which is an invasive and noisy procedure. To circumvent this problem, we propose a noninvasive PET/MRI approach that eliminates the need to measure AIF by using global CBF determined by phase-contrast (PC) MRI as a reference region. This approach not only is noninvasive but also involves no additional imaging time, because PC MRI and 15O-water PET are acquired simultaneously. The purpose of this study was to test the accuracy of this hybrid method in an animal model in which AIF was measured directly and CBF was varied by changing the arterial CO2 tension. Methods: PET and MRI data were simultaneously acquired in juvenile pigs at hypocapnia (n = 5), normocapnia (n = 5), and hypercapnia (n = 4). CBF was measured by the MRI reference method and by PET alone using an MRI-compatible blood sampling system to measure AIF. Results: Global CBF estimates from PC MRI and 15O-water PET agreed well, with a correlation coefficient of 0.9 and a slope of 0.88. Strong positive correlations (R2 > 0.96) were also found between regional CBF generated by the PET-only and the MRI-reference methods. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the accuracy of this hybrid PET/MRI approach, which might prove useful in patients for whom obtaining accurate CBF measurements is challenging.

Alfred W. Bowers’ work epitomized the direct historical approach in Plains anthropology. Bowers integrated archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnology in his studies of the tribes of the Middle Missouri subarea. Yet his archaeological and historical research and interpretations have not been widely recognized. Bowers’ 1948 dissertation, A History of the Mandan and Hidatsa, and associated collections, have only recently become easily accessible. Bowers’ dissertation employed oral history and tradition, ethnohistoric accounts, and archaeological data to develop accounts of Mandan and Hidatsa history supported by independent lines of evidence. The culture-historical system he developed for Mandan and Hidatsa prehistory and history is a valuable framework for structuring and understanding Middle Missouri archaeology and cultural sequences and relationships. We review Bowers’ career, assess the significance of his work, and discuss the associated collections and their research potential.

Plant pathogen detection systems have been useful tools to monitor inoculum presence and initiate management schedules. More recently, a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was successfully designed for field use in the grape powdery mildew pathosystem; however, false negatives or false positives were prevalent in grower-conducted assays due to the difficulty in perceiving the magnesium pyrophosphate precipitate at low DNA concentrations. A quantitative LAMP (qLAMP) assay using a fluorescence resonance energy transfer-based probe was assessed by grape growers in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Custom impaction spore samplers were placed at a research vineyard and six commercial vineyard locations, and were tested bi-weekly by the lab and by growers. Grower-conducted qLAMP assays used a beta-version of the Smart-DART handheld LAMP reaction devices (Diagenetix, Inc., Honolulu, HI, USA), connected to Android 4.4 enabled, Bluetooth-capable Nexus 7 tablets for output. Quantification by a quantitative PCR assay was assumed correct to compare the lab and grower qLAMP assay quantification. Growers were able to conduct and interpret qLAMP results; however, the Erysiphe necator inoculum quantification was unreliable using the beta-Smart-DART devices. The qLAMP assay developed was sensitive to one spore in early testing of the assay, but decreased to >20 spores by the end of the trial. The qLAMP assay is not likely a suitable management tool for grape powdery mildew due to losses in sensitivity and decreasing costs and portability for other, more reliable molecular tools.

Selective sustained attention is vital for higher order cognition. Although endogenous and exogenous factors influence selective sustained attention, assessment of the degree to which these factors influence performance and learning is often challenging. We report findings from the Track-It task, a paradigm that aims to assess the contribution of endogenous and exogenous factors to selective sustained attention within the same task. Behavioral accuracy and eye-tracking data on the Track-It task were correlated with performance on an explicit learning task. Behavioral accuracy and fixations to distractors during the Track-It task did not predict learning when exogenous factors supported selective sustained attention. In contrast, when endogenous factors supported selective sustained attention, fixations to distractors were negatively correlated with learning. Similarly, when endogenous factors supported selective sustained attention, higher behavioral accuracy was correlated with greater learning. These findings suggest that endogenously and exogenously driven selective sustained attention, as measured through different conditions of the Track-It task, may support different kinds of learning.

Considerable research indicates that learners are sensitive to probabilistic structure in laboratory studies of artificial language learning. However, the artificial and simplified nature of the stimuli used in the pioneering work on the acquisition of statistical regularities has raised doubts about the scalability of such learning to the complexity of natural language input. In this review, we explore a central prediction of statistical learning accounts of language acquisition – that sensitivity to statistical structure should be linked to real language processes – via an examination of: (1) recent studies that have increased the ecological validity of the stimuli; (2) studies that suggest statistical segmentation produces representations that share properties with real words; (3) correlations between individual variability in statistical learning ability and individual variability in language outcomes; and (4) atypicalities in statistical learning in clinical populations characterized by language delays or deficits.

Management of grape powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator) and other polycyclic diseases often relies on calendar-based pesticide application schedules that assume the presence of inoculum. An inexpensive, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was designed to quickly detect airborne inoculum of E. necator to determine when to initiate a fungicide application programme. Field efficacy was tested in 2010 and 2011 in several commercial and research vineyards in the Willamette Valley of Oregon from pre-bud break to veraison. In each vineyard, three impaction spore traps were placed adjacent to the trunk. One trap was maintained and used by the grower to conduct the LAMP assay (G-LAMP) on-site and the other two traps were used for laboratory-conducted LAMP (L-LAMP) and quantitative PCR assay (qPCR). Using the qPCR as a gold standard, L-LAMP was comparable with qPCR in both years, and G-LAMP was comparable to qPCR in 2011. Latent class analysis indicated that qPCR had a true positive proportion of 98% in 2010 and 89% in 2011 and true negative proportion of 96% in 2010 and 64% in 2011. An average of 3·3 fewer fungicide applications were used when they were initiated based on spore detection relative to the grower standard practice. There were no significant differences in berry or leaf incidence between plots with fungicides initiated at detection or grower standard practice plots, suggesting that growers using LAMP to initiate fungicide applications can use fewer fungicide applications to manage powdery mildew compared to standard practices.

A Small Animal PET detector block made with a Dual Layer Offset crystal array with 1.27 mm wide LYSO crystals on a Philips PDC3200-22-44 Digital Photon Counter (DPC) array was characterized while operating near room temperature. Crystal map peak to valley ratio, energy resolution, and timing resolution were characterized as a function of various device settings of the DPC and temperature. In addition, rates of count loss due to the phenomena of incomplete neighbor logic and dark-readout deadtime were measured. Device settings of interest were: Trigger scheme–defining the threshold of when a DPC will generate a timestamp and enter a readout cycle, inhibit fraction–the fraction of noisy cells which are disabled, and RTL-refresh–a setting which reduces the probability of the DPC being triggered from dark noise. At 15 $^\circ {\rm C}$ , peak to valley ratios were measured to be around 11, and energy resolution around 11.5% regardless of device settings. Timing resolution ranged from near 300 ps to 1.5 ns. Count loss from dark readout deadtime was insignificant compared to incomplete neighbor logic, which ranged from as high as 95% to 5% of coincidences. It was found that trade-offs had to be made between timing resolution and count loss. With the most optimal device settings for small animal PET, a timing resolution of 1.4 ns and coincidence losses of 5% were achieved. At these settings, the detector block had little sensitivity to a 5 $^\circ {\rm C}$ temperature fluctuation.

Inflammation that occurs following acute myocardial infarction plays a pivotal role in "healing" by facilitating the creation of a supportive scar. (18)F-FDG, which is taken up avidly by macrophages, has been proposed as a marker of cell-based inflammation. However, its reliability as an accurate indicator of inflammation has not been established, particularly in the early post infarction period when regional myocardial perfusion is often severely compromised. METHODS: Nine adult dogs underwent left anterior descending coronary occlusion with or without reperfusion. Animals were imaged between 7 to 21 days post infarction with Positron Emission Tomography/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (PET/MRI) following: a) bolus injection of Gd-DTPA, b) bolus injection of (18)F-FDG, c) bolus injection of 99Tc-DTPA to simulate the distribution of Gd-DTPA (which represents its partition coefficient in well perfused tissue) and d) the injection of (111)Indium-labeled white blood cells 24 hours earlier. Following sacrifice, myocardial tissue concentrations of (18)F, (111)In and 99Tc were determined in a well counter. Linear regression analysis evaluated the relationships between a) the concentrations of (111)In vs (18)F and b) the dependence of the ratio of (111)In/(18)F to the apparent distribution volume of (99m)Tc-DTPA. RESULTS: In seven of the nine animals (111)In increased as (18)F increased with the other two animals showing weak negative slopes. With respect to the dependence of (111)In/(18)F with partition coefficient four animals showed no dependence and four showed a week positive slope with one animal showing a negative slope. Further, in regions of extensive microvascular obstruction, (18)F significantly underestimated the extent of the presence of (111)In. CONCLUSION: In the early post myocardial infarction period, PET (18)F-FDG imaging following a single bolus administration may underestimate the extent and degree of inflammation within regions of microvascular obstruction.

Statistical learning has been studied in a variety of different tasks, including word segmentation, object identification, category learning, artificial grammar learning and serial reaction time tasks (e.g. Saffran et al. 1996 Science 274 , 1926–1928; Orban et al. 2008 Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 105 , 2745–2750; Thiessen & Yee 2010 Child Development 81 , 1287–1303; Saffran 2002 Journal of Memory and Language 47 , 172–196; Misyak & Christiansen 2012 Language Learning 62 , 302–331). The difference among these tasks raises questions about whether they all depend on the same kinds of underlying processes and computations, or whether they are tapping into different underlying mechanisms. Prior theoretical approaches to statistical learning have often tried to explain or model learning in a single task. However, in many cases these approaches appear inadequate to explain performance in multiple tasks. For example, explaining word segmentation via the computation of sequential statistics (such as transitional probability) provides little insight into the nature of sensitivity to regularities among simultaneously presented features. In this article, we will present a formal computational approach that we believe is a good candidate to provide a unifying framework to explore and explain learning in a wide variety of statistical learning tasks. This framework suggests that statistical learning arises from a set of processes that are inherent in memory systems, including activation, interference, integration of information and forgetting (e.g. Perruchet & Vinter 1998 Journal of Memory and Language 39 , 246–263; Thiessen et al. 2013 Psychological Bulletin 139 , 792–814). From this perspective, statistical learning does not involve explicit computation of statistics, but rather the extraction of elements of the input into memory traces, and subsequent integration across those memory traces that emphasize consistent information (Thiessen and Pavlik 2013 Cognitive Science 37 , 310–343). Recently, positron emission tomography (PET) is playing an increasingly important role in the diagnosis and staging of cancer. Combined PET and X-ray computed tomography (PET-CT) scanners are now the modality of choice in cancer treatment planning. More recently, the combination of PET and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is being explored in many sites. Combining PET and MRI has presented many challenges since the photo-multiplier tubes (PMT) in PET do not function in high magnetic fields, and conventional PET detectors distort MRI images. Solid state light sensors like avalanche photo-diodes (APDs) and more recently silicon photo-multipliers (SiPMs) are much less sensitive to magnetic fields thus easing the compatibility issues. This paper presents the results of a group of Canadian scientists who are developing a PET detector ring which fits inside a high field small animal MRI scanner with the goal of providing simultaneous PET and MRI images of small rodents used in pre-clinical medical research. We discuss the evolution of both the crystal blocks (which detect annihilation photons from positron decay) and the SiPM array performance in the last four years which together combine to deliver significant system performance in terms of speed, energy and timing resolution.

Aims: To evaluate the effect of fungicide regimes and application timing on pod rot incidence, peanut yield, grades, and diseased kernels. Study Design: Randomized complete block design with nine treatments and four replicates. Place and Duration of Study: Studies were conducted during the 2010 and 2011 growing seasons on producers farms located west of Seminole, Texas in Gaines County. Methodology: Rows were spaced 101.6 cm apart on raised beds. Plot size was four rows wide by 304.8 m in length. Fungicide regimes comprised of azoxystrobin and/or mefenoxam, or flutolanil were evaluated. Initial applications were made 68 or 82 days after planting (DAP) with subsequent applications occurring 30 days later. All fungicides were applied in a 50.8 cm band. Results: In 2010, the percentage of pods affected and percent damaged kernels were reduced by early applications of mefenoxam and azoxystrobin. The flutolanil treatment in 2010 showed the greatest improvement in yield compared to the control. The 2011 trial was greatly affected by drought, and no appreciable differences were seen for any of the

Background Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer's disease is valuable to understand better the structural changes that occur in the brain and could provide a means to test drug treatments. A hallmark pathological feature of Alzheimer's disease is atrophy of the hippocampus, which is an early biomarker of the disease. MRI can be used to detect and monitor this biomarker. Method Repeated measurements using in vivo 3D T 2 -weighted imaging of mice were used to assess the methods. Each mouse was imaged twice in one week and twice the following week and no changes in volume were expected. The hippocampus was segmented both manually and semi-automatically. Registration was done to gain information on shape changes. The volumes from each mouse were compared intra-mouse, between mice and to hippocampus volume values in the literature. Results A reliable method was developed which was able to detect difference in volumes of hippocampus between mice when performed by a single individual. The semi-automated segmentation was unable to detect the same level of differences. The semi-automated segmentation method gave larger hippocampus volumes, with 78–87% reliability between the manual and semi-automated segmentation. Although more accurate, the manual segmentation is laborious and suffers from inter- and intra-variability. Conclusion These results suggest that manual segmentation is still considered the most reliable segmentation method for small structures. However, if performing longitudinal studies, where there is at least one year between imaging sessions, the segmentation should be done all at once at the end of all the imaging sessions. If segmentation is done after each imaging session, with at least a year passing between segmentations, very small variations in volumes can be missed. This method provides a means to quantify the volume of the hippocampus in a live mouse using manual segmentation, which is the first step toward studying hippocampus atrophy in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease.

Integrated positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) is an imaging technology that provides complementary anatomical and functional information for medical diagnostics. Both PET and MRI are highly susceptible to motion artifacts due, in part, to long acquisition times. The simultaneous acquisition of the two modalities presents the opportunity to use MRI navigator techniques for motion correction of both PET and MRI data. For this task, we propose spherical navigator echoes (SNAVs) - 3D k-space navigators that can accurately and rapidly measure rigid body motion in all six degrees of freedom. SNAVs were incorporated into turbo FLASH (tfl) - a product fast gradient echo sequence - to create the tfl-SNAV pulse sequence. Acquiring in vivo brain images from a healthy volunteer with both sequences first compared the tfl-SNAV and product tfl sequences. It was observed that incorporation of the SNAVs into the image sequence did not have any detrimental impact on the image quality. The SNAV motion correction technique was evaluated using an anthropomorphic brain phantom. Following a stationary reference image where the tfl-SNAV sequence was acquired along with simultaneous list-mode PET, three identical PET/MRI scans were performed where the phantom was moved several times throughout each acquisition. This motion - up to 11° and 14 mm - resulted in motion artifacts in both PET and MR images. Following SNAV motion correction of the MRI and PET list-mode data, artifact reduction was achieved for both the PET and MR images in all three motion trials. The corrected images have improved image quality and are quantitatively more similar to the ground truth reference images.

We are currently designing a small animal PET insert for use in an MRI with a bore size that constrains the insert inner diameter to be no larger than 66 mm while leaving 25 mm for ring thickness. The insert will be made from 10 mm thick DOI-capable Dual Layer Offset LYSO blocks coupled to MR-compatible SiPMs. The block is made from a 9 × 9 array of 1.345 × 4 mm3 crystals in the front layer and a 10 × 10 array of 1.345 × 1.345 × 6 mm3 crystals in the back layer (crystal pitch = 1.422 mm). A ring of blocks is made by repeating a block around a ring with inner diameter of 64.776 mm 16 times. Here, GATE simulations have been made to estimate mousenoise-equivalent count rate (NECR), mouse-scatter fraction (SF), peak sensitivity (Sp) resolution, and resolution uniformity to evaluate the design of our PET insert. These simulations make use of hardware performance estimates measured from a prototype block. For the one, three, and six ring tomographs, NECR curves, SF, and figures were produced for the best and worst expected hardware performance. Simulations of a point source in a one-ring tomograph were made to estimate resolution across the field of view (FOV). For a six-ring tomograph with a 250-750 keV energy window and best expected hardware performance, the peak NECR, peak NECR activity, and Sp were 1273 kcps, 96 MBq and 10.0%. With three rings, these figures were 389 kcps at 95 MBq, and 5.9%. And with one-ring, they were 43 kcps, 85 MBq, and 2.0%. SF was ~ 16% in these three cases. Spatial resolution in the radial direction was found to change from 1.0 to 1.9 mm FWHM moving from the center of the FOV to a 15 mm offset. These results indicate that our scanner design is highly suited for high-resolution preclinical mouse imaging.

The term statistical learning was originally used to describe sensitivity to conditional relations between syllables in the context of word segmentation. Subsequent research has demonstrated that infants are sensitive to many other kinds of statistical information. The range of statistical learning phenomena presents a challenge to prior theories and models, which have primarily focused on a single aspect of learning. From our perspective, sensitivity to conditional information yields discrete representations (such as words). Integration across these representations yields sensitivity to distributional information. To achieve sensitivity to both kinds of statistical information, we propose a framework that combines processes that extract units from the input with processes that compare across these extracted items. We review the literature on statistical learning to show how these processes map onto prior research, and we discuss how the interaction between these processes gives rise to more complex patterns of learning than either process achieves in isolation.

Selective sustained attention (SSA) is crucial for higher-order cognition. Factors promoting SSA are described as exogenous or endogenous. However, there is little research specifying how these factors interact during development – due, largely, to the paucity of developmentally-appropriate paradigms. We report findings from a novel paradigm designed to investigate SSA in preschoolers. The findings indicate that this task (1) has good psychometric and parametric properties, and (2) allows investigation of exogenous and endogenous factors within the same task, making it possible to attribute changes in performance to different mechanisms of attentional control rather than to differences in engagement in different tasks.

Statistical learning refers to the ability to identify structure in the input based on its statistical properties. For many linguistic structures, the relevant statistical features are distributional: They are related to the frequency and variability of exemplars in the input. These distributional regularities have been suggested to play a role in many different aspects of language learning, including phonetic categories, using phonemic distinctions in word learning, and discovering non-adjacent relations. On the surface, these different aspects share few commonalities. Despite this, we demonstrate that the same computational framework can account for learning in all of these tasks. These results support two conclusions. The first is that much, and perhaps all, of distributional statistical learning can be explained by the same underlying set of processes. The second is that some aspects of language can be learned due to domain-general characteristics of memory.

We perform a search for the exclusive radiative decay B0→γ, which is dominated by b̄d annihilation, in a sample of 124×106 BB̄ events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- storage ring at SLAC. No significant signal is seen. We set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0→γ)

We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays $\Dz\to e^+e^-$ and $\Dz\to\mu^+\mu^-$, and the lepton-flavor violating decay $\Dz\to e^\pm\mu^\mp$. The measurement is based on $122 {fb}^{-1}$ of data collected by the \babar detector at the PEP-II asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider. No evidence is found for any of the decays. The upper limits on the branching fractions, at the 90 % confidence level, are $1.2\times 10^{-6}$ for $\Dz\to e^+e^-$, $1.3\times 10^{-6}$ for $\Dz\to\mu^+\mu^-$, and $8.1\times 10^{-7}$ for $\Dz\to e^\pm\mu^\mp$., Comment: Minor changes of the text and reference for the publication

The ability to adapt to statistical structure (often referred to as “statistical learning”) has been proposed to play a major role in the acquisition and use of natural languages. Several recent studies have explored the relationship between individual differences in statistical learning and language outcomes. These studies have produced mixed results, with some studies finding a significant relationship between statistical learning and language outcomes, and others finding weak or null results. Furthermore, the few studies that have used multiple measures of statistical learning have reported that they are not correlated (e.g., [1]). The current study assesses the reliability of various measures of auditory statistical segmentation, and their consistency over time. That is, do the generally low correlations observed between measures of statistical learning stem from task demands, the psychometric properties of the measures, or the fact that statistical learning may be a highly fragmented construct? Our results confirm previous reports that individual measures of statistical learning tend not to correlate with each other, and suggest that the somewhat weak reliability of the measures may be an important factor in the low correlations. Our data also suggest that aggregating performance across tasks may be an avenue for improving the reliability of the measures.
