New Zealand and Singapore are both capable small states with notably different security and defence concerns. The relative level of commitment that Singapore provides to its military forces in comparison to New Zealand is not only a reflection of the tremendous economic, social and technological development that has occurred in the city state since its independence, but is also due the different perceptions, discretion and motivation that each state has regarding the role and utility of their military instruments. The differences in their military capabilities also reflect how each has responded to their particular circumstances as small states. New Zealand has, to a large extent, worked within the constraints expected of small states while Singapore has striven to overcome them. However, the military capabilities of both states are significantly influenced by their characteristics as small states, and these form the basis of the challenges that they are likely to face going forward. This article examines key factors and elements underpinning why New Zealand and Singapore have developed markedly different military forces in the period from 1965 to 2022 in order to understand the extent to which their characteristics as small states have influenced their respective approaches to force development. The state of the Biosphere is influenced by a series of complex factors as well as by its constituent components. The composition of the components of the Biosphere is undergoing a variable dynamic process of both proper composition and structure. The anthropogenic activity that has a reference point to ensure the growing demands of the population has a generally negative impact at the current stage upon the state of the climate that comes as a result of the emissions of polluting green house gases as well as polluting particles in the form of aerosols. Consecutive effects with their states in the form of steps are described by a special diagram that can be called the cyclic diagram of anthropogenic activities. Dissolved iron (dFe) plays an important role in regulating marine productivity. In high nutrient, low chlorophyll regions (>33% of the global ocean), iron is the primary growth limiting nutrient, and elsewhere iron can regulate nitrogen fixation by diazotrophs. The link between iron availability and carbon export is strongly dependent on the phytoplankton iron quotas or cellular Fe:C ratios. This ratio varies by more than an order of magnitude in the open ocean and is positively correlated with ambient dFe concentrations in field observations. Representing Fe:C ratios within models is necessary to investigate how ocean carbon cycling will interact with perturbations to iron cycling in a changing climate. The Community Earth System Model ocean component was modified to simulate dynamic, group‐specific, phytoplankton Fe:C that varies as a function of ambient iron concentration. The simulated Fe:C ratios improve the representation of the spatial trends in the observed Fe:C ratios. The acclimation of phytoplankton Fe:C ratios dampens the biogeochemical response to varying atmospheric deposition of soluble iron, compared to a fixed Fe:C ratio. However, varying atmospheric soluble iron supply has first order impacts on global carbon and nitrogen fluxes and on nutrient limitation spatial patterns. Our results suggest that pyrogenic Fe is a significant dFe source that rivals mineral dust inputs in some regions. Changes in dust flux and iron combustion sources (anthropogenic and wildfires) will modify atmospheric Fe inputs in the future. Accounting for dynamic phytoplankton iron quotas is critical for understanding ocean biogeochemistry and projecting its response to variations in atmospheric deposition. The Arctic is often cast as a site where natural resources can be extracted with processes eased by retreating sea ice. This article argues that Arctic resource euphoria is misplaced – at least partly – due to the worsening climatic, ecological, and social crises that increase the costs and risks of extraction. Permafrost melt is making mineral and fossil fuel extraction riskier and more difficult, as extractive infrastructures – built with great sunk costs – are deteriorating. The climate catastrophe can already be observed, first-hand, in the Arctic. This can give insights into what kinds of dynamics can be expected globally. The deterioration of extractive infrastructures caused by the climate crisis is likely to dampen the forecasts for expanding extractivism. This article identifies interdisciplinary research gaps and needs, while offering new prognoses for the future in and through the Arctic at the interface of climate crises, global climate tipping points, and resource extraction. A visible light-induced diastereoselective synthesis of 4,6a-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,3(2H,3aH)-diones using 2H-azirines and maleimides in the presence of an organic photocatalyst is reported. The method is efficient and environmentally friendly, and proceeds with good functional group tolerance and substrate scope. Aerosol particles are ubiquitous in the atmosphere, and currently contribute a large uncertainty to climate models. Part of the endeavour to reduce this uncertainty takes the form of improving our understanding of aerosol at the microphysical level, thus enabling chemical and physical processes to be more accurately represented in larger scale models. In addition to modeling efforts, there is a need to develop new instruments and methodologies to interrogate the physicochemical properties of aerosol. This perspective presents the development, theory, and application of optical trapping, a powerful tool for single particle investigations of aerosol. After providing an overview of the role of aerosol in Earth's atmosphere and the microphysics of these particles, we present a brief history of optical trapping and a more detailed look at its application to aerosol particles. We also compare optical trapping to other single particle techniques. Understanding the interaction of light with single particles is essential for interpreting experimental measurements. In the final part of this perspective, we provide the relevant formalism for understanding both elastic and inelastic light scattering for single particles. The developments discussed here go beyond Mie theory and include both how particle and beam shape affect spectra. Throughout the entirety of this work, we highlight numerous references and examples, mostly from the last decade, of the application of optical trapping to systems that are relevant to the atmospheric aerosol. I argue that Model Arctic Council (MAC) has a role to play in Arctic sustainable development. Like the better-known Model United Nations (MUN), MAC is a form of simulation pedagogy, an experiential learning process in which secondary-school pupils or university students comprehend the nature and importance of complex issues such as sustainable development by imagining themselves as diplomats trying to negotiate a common approach to them. After demonstrating the educational value of diplomatic simulations in general, I introduce MUN as its most popular form, and I assess a case-study of a global MUN program designed to advance knowledge and action among youth in respect of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This case-study, taken together with the structure, subject-matter and educational value of MAC itself, strongly suggests that MAC can be used to advance knowledge and action among both Arctic and non-Arctic youth in respect of Arctic sustainable development, including understanding how the notion of sustainable development is both contested in general and contextualized in the Arctic. Combining this analysis with professional experience, I offer practical recommendations to educators about the effective design and use of MAC and other simulation pedagogies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As scientists engage in research motivated by climate change and the impacts of pollution on air, water, and human health, we increasingly recognize the need for the scientific community to improve communication and knowledge exchange across disciplines to address pressing and outstanding research questions holistically. Our professional paths have crossed because our research activities focus on the chemical reactivity of Fe-containing minerals in air and water, and at the air-sea interface. (Photo)chemical reactions driven by Fe can take place at the surface of the particles/droplets or within the condensed phase. The extent and rates of these reactions are influenced by water content and biogeochemical activity ubiquitous in these systems. One of these reactions is the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause damage to respiratory organs. Another is that the reactivity of Fe and organics in aerosol particles alter surficial physicochemical properties that impact aerosol-radiation and aerosol–cloud interactions. Also, upon deposition, aerosol particles influence ocean biogeochemical processes because micronutrients such as Fe or toxic elements such as copper become bioavailable. We provide a perspective on these topics and future research directions on the reactivity of Fe in atmospheric aerosol systems, from sources to short- and long-term impacts at the sinks with emphasis on needs to enhance the predictive power of atmospheric and ocean models. The aim of this meta-analysis is twofold: (a) to assess cognitive impairments in isolated rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) patients compared to healthy controls (HC); (b) to quantitatively estimate the risk of developing a neurodegenerative disease in iRBD patients according to baseline cognitive assessment. To address the first aim, cross-sectional studies including polysomnography-confirmed iRBD patients, HC, and reporting neuropsychological testing were included. To address the second aim, longitudinal studies including polysomnography-confirmed iRBD patients, reporting baseline neuropsychological testing for converted and still isolated patients separately were included. The literature search was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines and the protocol was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42021253427). Cross-sectional and longitudinal studies were searched from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase databases. Publication bias and statistical heterogeneity were assessed respectively by funnel plot asymmetry and using I 2 . Finally, a random-effect model was performed to pool the included studies. 75 cross-sectional (2,398 HC and 2,460 iRBD patients) and 11 longitudinal (495 iRBD patients) studies were selected. Cross-sectional studies showed that iRBD patients performed significantly worse in cognitive screening scores (random-effects (RE) model = -0.69), memory (RE model = -0.64), and executive function (RE model = -0.50) domains compared to HC. The survival analyses conducted for longitudinal studies revealed that lower executive function and language performance, as well as the presence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), at baseline were associated with an increased risk of conversion at follow-up. Femtosecond laser excitation of strongly absorbing thin films generates picosecond acoustic waves in the surrounding medium. In time-domain transient absorption experiments, these waves can give rise to Brillouin oscillations. In this contribution, the attenuation of the Brillouin oscillations in transient absorption microscopy experiments has been investigated for different excitation and detection conditions. The results show that the measured attenuation constants strongly depend on the numerical aperture (NA) of the microscope objective used in the experiments, with higher NA objectives giving larger attenuation constants. Modeling the effect using Gaussian beam theory shows that the increased attenuation at high NA arises from diffraction effects in both the light fields and the acoustic waves. These results are important for understanding the spectral resolution in imaging applications of the Brillouin scattering effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The program, which involves scientists from 35 countries, has been studying the marine biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and isotopes for 20 years. It emphasizes the importance of this research in understanding the oceans and acknowledges the contributions of scientists and institutions involved in the program. The valence state conversion of lanthanide ions induced by femtosecond laser fields has attracted considerable attention due to their potential applications in areas like high-density optical storage. However, the physical mechanisms involved in valence state conversions still remain unclear. Here, we report the first experimental study of controlling the reduction of trivalent samarium ions to divalent ones in sodium aluminoborate glass by varying the polarization status of the 800 nm femtosecond laser field. As the laser field is varied from linear to circular polarization, the reduction efficiency can be greatly decreased by about fifty percent. This polarization-dependent reduction behavior is found to directly correlate with the nonresonant two-photon 4f–4f absorption probability of the trivalent samarium ions in both experiment and theory. Multiphoton excited charge transfer between oxygen and samarium is considered to be responsible for the photoreduction. Our work demonstrates a controllable and effective way in tuning the valence state conversion efficiency and sheds light on the underlying mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Decarboxylative protonation is a general deletion tactic to replace polar carboxylic acid groups with hydrogen or its isotope. Current methods rely on the pre‐activation of acids, non‐sustainable hydrogen sources, and/or expensive/highly oxidizing photocatalysts, presenting challenges to their wide adoption. Here we show that a cooperative iron/thiol catalyst system can readily achieve this transformation, hydrodecarboxylating a wide range of activated and unactivated carboxylic acids and overcoming scope limitations in previous direct methods. The reaction is readily scaled in batch configuration and can be directly performed in deuterated solvent to afford high yields of d‐incorporated products with excellent isotope incorporation efficiency; characteristics not attainable in previous photocatalyzed approaches. Preliminary mechanistic studies indicate a radical mechanism and kinetic results of unactivated acids (KIE=1) are consistent with a light‐limited reaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here, we used a modified single-particle soot photometer (SP2) coupled with a concentric pneumatic nebulizer to measure the size-resolved number and mass concentrations of light-absorbing iron oxide aerosols (FeOx) in liquid water (CNFeOx and CMFeOx, respectively). The SP2 could selectively detect individual FeOx particles in mixed wüstite–fullerene soot laboratory samples and melted Arctic snow samples. The nebulizer efficiency for FeOx particles was about 50% within the 70–650 nm diameter range, as derived from the ratio of the volume of ammonium sulfate before and after extraction by the nebulizer and the size-resolved transmission efficiency in the nebulizer–SP2 sampling line. Uncertainty from the boundary lines empirically drawn to discriminate the scatterplots of FeOx and black carbon in the mixed wüstite–fullerene soot suspensions and snow samples was approximately 3.0% and 10%, respectively. Overall uncertainty in total CNFeOx and CMFeOx (220–1400 nm) was approximately 19% and 18%, respectively. After storage at 4 °C for 16 months, the FeOx particle size distributions in melted Arctic snow had remained stable, and CNFeOx and CMFeOx had changed by less than 19% and 1.0%, on average, respectively. Most of the FeOx on dust particles measured by this system was estimated to be in the diameter range smaller than 1000 nm, considering the nebulizer efficiency for dust particles. The high accuracy of the CNFeOx and CMFeOx measurements will help to improve our quantitative understanding of the wet deposition of FeOx and provide more accurate estimates of the effects of FeOx on snow surface albedo. Dissolution and hydrolysis processes are important in a variety of settings, including industrial and environmental applications. In this work, the hydrolysis of pyrosulfate (disulfate) was investigated by ion‐transfer electrochemistry at an array of microinterfaces between two immiscible electrolyte solutions (μITIES). Current associated with pyrosulfate transfer was observed, but it decreased with time. This is due to the hydrolysis of pyrosulfate to hydrogen sulfate and sulfate. Corroborating data for the hydrolysis was obtained from pH measurements (acidification of the aqueous solution) and Raman spectroscopy (formation of sulfate and hydrogen sulfate). Measurement of the ion‐transfer potential from the voltammograms enabled estimation of pyrosulfate's Gibbs energy of transfer between the phases. Quantum mechanical calculations were employed to estimate the thermodynamics for the reactions of pyrosulfate, hydrogen sulfate and sulfate, which supported the experimentally observed trends. Submicron soot particles (<1.0 μm in aerodynamic diameter) are responsible for global warming and health burdens worldwide. However, studies on bio-monitoring of submicron soot particles and their associated sources by using tree leaves are not comprehensively illustrated. Here, we determined the seasonal trends of submicron soot particles on the leaves of the Platanus acerifolia collected from two cities (Lu'an, Anhui Province, and Nanjing, Jiangsu Province) in the Yangtze River Delta region, China. The source apportionment of submicron soot particles was performed using stable carbon isotopic analyses. Significant seasonal trends of submicron soot particles were observed in two cities with averaged levels of 0.41–1.36 mg m−2 in cold seasons and averaged levels of 0.13–0.24 mg m−2 in warm seasons. The levels of δ13C for submicron soot at the suburban site of Lu'an city were observed to be in the range of −25.6‰ to −18.2‰ with fossil fuels dominated (∼58%) in summer and −23.0‰ to −15.6‰ with biomass burning dominated in winter (∼67%). In comparison, the ranges in the levels of δ13C in submicron soot were found to be from −26.5‰ to −20.4‰ in winter, and −24.2‰ to −17.9‰ in summer at the urban site of Nanjing. Fossil fuels accounted for a large fraction of submicron soot with average contributions of 53% in winter and 73% in summer, respectively. These findings demonstrate that Platanus acerifolia trees could be used as an effective and low-cost bio-monitoring tool for monitoring the pollution status of submicron soot and associated source contribution. Ozone is one of the most toxic admixtures in the troposphere. Therefore, it is among the main pollutants and its concentration is monitored. This work represents an overview of continuous measurements of the ozone content in the troposphere on the territory of Russia throughout 2021 carried out on an initiative of scientific and educational institutions at 17 stations in different Russian regions. The monitoring results showed that the daily average ozone concentration exceeded the MPCd.a level during a major part of the year at all observation sites, and by a factor of two or even three at a number of stations. At six stations, concentrations in excess of the maximum permissible one-time concentration MPCm.o were recorded. This requires a more comprehensive analysis of the composition and concentration of ozone precurcors and the development of measures to reduce their emission into the atmosphere. The importance of iron as a limiting nutrient in the open ocean is widely recognized, but there is substantial uncertainty about the rate that it cycles in the marine environment. Here, we combine measurements from the water column, sediment traps, and incubations to constrain Fe turnover during summer at Station ALOHA in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre. Using low levels of 57Fe–58Fe double spike, measured with high precision by multi‐collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, we find Fe uptake rates of 30–60 pM d−1 throughout the euphotic zone. Dissolved Fe turnover times are estimated at 10–15 d in the mixed layer and 1–3 d near the deep chlorophyll maximum. Aerosol Fe supply inferred from a thorium isotope mass balance indicates that the dissolved Fe residence time is approximately 6 months in the upper euphotic zone (0–75 m), relative to external sources, and 2 months in the lower euphotic zone (75–150 m). To reconcile these observations, the average Fe atom must be recycled over 25 times at Station ALOHA in both the upper and lower euphotic zones (an "Fe ratio" equal to 0.04 and 0.03, respectively), a level of conservation that has only been documented in Fe‐limited regions thus far. At steady state, this scenario requires an aerosol Fe solubility of 4.5%, which is similar to dissolution experiments from Pacific Ocean aerosols. Our results suggest that the oligotrophic ocean is capable of recycling iron efficiently even when these ecosystems are not demonstrably iron‐limited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Given alkynyl group is an important functional unit, a variety of efficient methods have been developed to construct alkynyl‐containing compounds. Among them, the alkynylative difunctionalization of alkenes is one of the most straightforward and efficient strategies for preparing these compounds and so has made great progress in recent years, including the catalytic asymmetric manner. However, there is no comprehensive review to summarize these studies. This review is aimed at comprehensively summarizing the alkynylative difunctionalization of alkenes, which is presented in terms of alkynylation‐initiated and alkynylation‐terminated difunctionalizations of alkenes. Obesity is characterized by excessive fat accumulation. The Zucker rat displays genetic obesity due to a mutation in the leptin receptor gene; this model is of great interest because of its similarity to human obesity. Brain regions may be affected by obesity, but detailed information is lacking. In the present study, we analyzed the morphology of neurons in the hippocampal trisynaptic circuit as well as the spatial memory of obese Zucker rats. We performed two experiments. Each experiment contained two experimental groups: the control group (male Long Evans rats) and the study group (obese male Zucker rats). We monitored the body weights of all rats over 4 weeks. In the first experiment, we analyzed the morphology of hippocampal neurons. Under anesthesia, we measured the abdominal and hip circumferences and collected at least 1 ml of blood to assess serum glucose (GLU), triglyceride (TGC), and cholesterol (COL) concentrations. We perfused the brains of these rats with 0.9% saline solution, incubated the brains in Golgi‐Cox solution, and subsequently evaluated the morphology of pyramidal neurons in the hippocampus (the CA1‐CA3 regions) and the entorhinal cortex as well as the morphology of granule neurons in the dentate gyrus. In the second experiment, we assessed the spatial memory of animals with the Morris water maze. The Zucker rats had an obese phenotype, as indicated by their elevated body weight and increased abdominal and hip circumferences as well as elevated GLU, COL, and TGC concentrations. Analysis of neurons from the specified regions in obese male Zucker rats indicated reduced dendritic arborization and reduced dendritic spine density. In terms of spatial learning and memory, the obese Zucker rats exhibited intact spatial learning (i.e., of platform location) but deficits in spatial memory. At the 2014 Wales Summit, the NATO allies pledged to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defence by 2024. While some allies are on track to meet the 2% target, others only modestly augmented their military expenditures and still others have even reduced their defence budgets. This article aims to explain the diverging trajectories of the allies' military expenditures during the first five years after the Wales Summit. More specifically, it introduces an integrated burden sharing model, which is tested with generalized set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The results of the analysis indicate that the threat posed by Russia provided the most important incentive for increasing defence budgets. However, general budget constraints kept some allies from increasing their defence budget in proportion to the threat posed by Russia. Conversely, in the absence of budget constraints, allies governed by a right-leaning executive made intermediate budget efforts even if they only faced a low level of threat. Strikingly, budget inertia only had a modest impact on the allies' defence budgets, only resulting in a low level of spending in allies that were not threatened by Russia and either faced considerable budget constraints or were governed by a left-wing government. Introduction: In Taiwan, many people receive Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) as an alternative choice to help control body weight. However, the clinical effectiveness of CHM on weight control has not been well studied, while potential risks and adverse effects are still unknown. The aim of our study is to find out a safe and efficient treatment model of CHM for weight control compared to liraglutide in a real-world setting. Methods: we retrospectively analyzed obese subjects [body mass index (BMI)≥ 25 kg/m2] from Chang Gung Research Database (2013-2018). We evaluated the effect on body weight and BMI changes in obese groups receiving CHM or western medicine (WM, represented liraglutide) within 180 days. The proportion of subjects who achieved 5 and 10% weight reduction was calculated as well. Furthermore, the potential adverse events were analyzed during the study period. Overlap weighting was used to balance the baseline differences between CHM and WM groups. Results: The full cohort comprised 1,360 participants: 701 in the CHM group and 659 in the WM group. At baseline, the CHM group was younger (42.75 ± 12.12 years old in CHM vs. 52.31 ± 11.7 years old in WM, p-value <0.001) and has more female subjects (77.6% in CHM vs. 53.0% in WM, p-value <0.001). On the other hand, CHM users had lower body weight (79.83 ± 15.66 kg vs. 84.68 ± 17.14 kg, p-value <0.001) and BMI (30.58 ± 5.20 vs. 32.84 ± 6.95, p-value <0.001). At day 180, CHM users lost more body weight (-4.5 ± 4.07 kg vs. -2.15 ± 4.05 kg, p-value <0.001) and higher reduction in BMI (-1.77 ± 1.73 vs. -0.9 ± 2.14, p-value <0.001). A total of 53.21% (n = 373) CHM users lost at least 5% of body weight (22.46% for WM users, p-value <0.001), and 18.97% (n = 132) lost at least 10% of body weight (4.55% forWMusers, p-value <0.001). The benefit remained consistent with and without overlap weighting. For adverse events, 18 cases of hypertension occurred in 659 subjects in the WM group (2.7%) in comparison to 1 of 701 subjects in the CHM group (0.1%). Conclusion: CHM led to clinically meaningful weight loss without serious adverse events in a real-world setting. Further clinical trials are warranted to validate this result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anthropogenic emission is an important component of the present‐day iron cycle yet its long‐term impacts on climate are poorly understood. Iron mineralogy strongly affects its radiative and oceanic interactions and was unrepresented in previous studies. We perform simulations using a mineralogy‐based inventory and an atmospheric transport model and estimate the 1850–2010 global mean direct radiative forcing (DRF) to be +0.02 to +0.10 W/m2. We estimate that the CO2 sequestration of 0.2–13 ppmv over the last 150 years due to enhanced phytoplankton productivity by anthropogenic iron deposition causes an avoided CO2 forcing of −0.002 to −0.16 W/m2. While globally small, these impacts can be higher in specific regions; the anthropogenic DRF is +0.5 W/m2 over areas with more coal combustion and metal smelting, and anthropogenic soluble iron sustains >10% of marine net primary productivity in the high‐latitude North Pacific Ocean, a region vulnerable to stratification due to climate change. Iron is released from burning fuels, such as coal and oil, and from processing metal ores. The emitted particles contain iron, among other chemical species. This iron absorbs incoming sunlight and warms the atmosphere while it is suspended in the air. Iron is also an essential nutrient for phytoplankton and can enhance their growth when it falls in ocean areas where it is lacking. These stimulated phytoplankton then draw more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. We evaluate the influence of these two mechanisms on Earth's heat balance (radiative forcing) since pre‐industrial times and include sensitivity studies to examine the highest possible contribution. We find that even with the upper bounds, the global average forcing is much smaller than the total effects of human emissions of species such as carbon dioxide and black carbon. However, in regions with more coal‐burning and smelting, iron aerosol causes noticeable warming and after deposition may be responsible for more than 10% of phytoplankton growth in the higher‐latitude North Pacific Ocean. A proof‐of‐concept study of hypervalent chalcogenonium⋅⋅⋅π bonding catalysis was performed. A new catalytic strategy using 1,2‐oxaselenolium salts as chalcogen bond donors and alkenes as chalcogen bond acceptors is described. The feasibility of this concept is demonstrated by the use of trisubstituted selenonium salts in the metal‐free catalytic hydrofunctionalization and polymerization of alkenes via unconventional seleniranium ion‐like intermediates. Alkene-derived radical cations are versatile reactive intermediates and have been widely applied in the construction of complex functionalized molecules and cyclic systems for chemical synthesis. Therefore, the synthetic application of these alkene-derived radical cations represents a powerful and green tool that can be used to achieve the functionalization of alkenes partially because the necessity of stoichiometric external chemical oxidants and/or hazardous reaction conditions is eliminated. This review summarizes the recent advances in the synthetic applications of the electro-/photochemical alkene-derived radical cations, emphasizing the key single-electron oxidation steps of the alkenes, the scope and limitations of the substrates, and the related reaction mechanisms. Using electrocatalysis and/or photocatalysis, single electron transfer (SET) oxidation of the C＝C bonds in the alkenes occurs, generating the alkene-derived radical cations, which sequentially enables the functionalization of translocated radical cations to occur in two ways: the first involves direct reaction with a nucleophile/radical or two molecules of nucleophiles to realize hydrofunctionalization, difunctionalization and cyclization; and the second involves the transformation of the alkene-derived radical cations into carbon-centered radicals using a base followed by radical coupling or oxidative nucleophilic coupling. The invasive freshwater mussel Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) has spread widely throughout Asia and South America, especially via interbasin water diversion and navigation. The middle route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project (SNWTP), whose terminal is Beijing, has diverted more than 60 billion m 3 of water from the Yangtze River Basin to Northern China since December 2014. L. fortunei has spread north to Beijing along the SNWTP, biofouling its channels and tunnels. To determine the status of L. fortunei's invasion in Beijing, we systematically inspected the water bodies receiving southern water, including all branches of the SNWTP, water treatment plants, lakes, reservoirs, and rivers. We measured the densities of adults and veligers of L. fortunei and conducted eDNA analyses of water samples. A generalized linear model and canonical correspondence analysis were adopted to investigate the correlations between environmental (e.g., water temperature, conductivity, pH, total nitrogen, and phosphorus) and biological (e.g., chlorophyll a, plankton density, and community composition) variables and the densities of adults and veligers of L. fortunei. Water temperature is the most important factor in determining the densities of D-shaped and pediveliger veligers, with explanatory variable contributions of 56.2% and 43.9%, respectively. The pH affects the densities of D-shaped, umbonated, and pediveliger veligers. The density of plantigrade veligers is negatively correlated with the conductivity and positively correlated with the concentration of chlorophyll a. Canonical correspondence analysis shows a weak correlation between the dominant phytoplankton taxa and the density of veligers. The densities of D-shaped, umbonated, and pediveliger veligers are positively correlated with the density of small phytoplankton (12.54 ± 4.33 μm), and the density of plantigrade veligers is positively correlated with the density of large (16.12 ± 5.96 μm) phytoplankton. The density of planktonic veligers is well correlated with local abiotic variables, and that of plantigrade veligers is less correlated with local abiotic variables. The 1,n‐enynes are potent scaffolds in organic synthesis, providing a state‐of‐the‐art approach for synthesizing various acyclic and carbo‐ and heterocyclic compounds. Radical cascade cyclization and C−H functionalization of 1,n‐enynes have gained immense attention in the synthetic community. Significant advancement in this field has been developed over the years, employing harsh and expensive metal catalysts usually associated with intense product purification and unwanted side‐products. In this context, the advent of visible light photocatalysis as a mild and efficient approach in the area of 1,n‐enynes is a welcome step. Herein, we provide an exclusive overview of the recent developments in visible light‐assisted manipulation of 1,n‐enynes. Distinctively‐light isotopic signatures associated with Fe released from anthropogenic activity have been used to trace basin‐scale impacts. However, this approach is complicated by the way Fe cycle processes modulate oceanic dissolved Fe (dFe) signatures (δ56Fediss) post deposition. Here we include dust, wildfire, and anthropogenic aerosol Fe deposition in a global ocean biogeochemical model with active Fe isotope cycling, to quantify how anthropogenic Fe impacts surface ocean dFe and δ56Fediss. Using the North Pacific as a natural laboratory, the response of dFe, δ56Fediss, and primary productivity are spatially and seasonally variable and do not simply follow the footprint of atmospheric deposition. Instead, the effect of anthropogenic Fe is regulated by the biogeochemical regime, specifically the degree of Fe limitation and rates of primary production. Overall, we find that while δ56Fediss does trace anthropogenic input, the response is muted by fractionation during phytoplankton uptake, but amplified by other isotopically‐light Fe sources. Dexmedetomidine (Dex) is an alpha-2 agonist used for sedation during various procedures. Dex activates 2-adrenoceptors, and causes the decrease of sympathetic tone, with attenuation of the neuroendocrine and hemodynamic responses to anesthesia and surgery; it reduces anesthetic and opioid requirements; and causes sedation and analgesia. Objective: it was to compare the perioperative effects of different doses of Dex at different timing in patients using Dex during the perioperative period adopting a medical data classification algorithm based on optimized semi-supervised collaborative training (Tri-training). Methods: 495 patients requiring surgical treatment in Xingtai People's Hospital were randomly selected as the study subjects. The patients were divided into group A (used before induction), group B (used during induction), and group C (used after induction) according to different induction timing, with 165 cases in each group. Then, groups A, B, and C were divided into groups A1, B1, and C1 (0.4 μg/(kg·h) rate), groups A2, B2, and C2 (0.6 μg/(kg·h) rate), and groups A3, B3, and C3 (0.8 μg/(kg·h) rate) according to the dose used, with 55 cases in each group. Intraoperative anesthesia and postoperative adverse reactions were compared among the 9 groups. Results: the similarity between the Tri-training algorithm optimized by Naive Bayes (NB) classification algorithm and the actual classification (93.49%) was clearly higher than that by decision tree (DT) and K-nearest neighbor (kNN) classification algorithm (76.21%, 74.31%); heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) values decreased obviously after Dex used in groups B1, C1, B2, C2, B3, and C3 (P <0.05), but did not change significantly in groups A1, A2, and A3 (P >0.05); the proportion of patients with satisfactory Ramsay score in group A3 was distinctly superior than that in groups A1, A2, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, and C3 (P <0.05); the incidence of adverse reactions in group A3 was significantly inferior than that in groups A1, A2, B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, and C3 (P <0.05). Conclusion: the optimization effect of NB classification algorithm was the best, and the injection of Dex at the injection rate of 0.8 μg/(kg·h) before induction of anesthesia could apparently improve the fluctuation of HR, SBP, and DBP during perioperative period, and effectively reduce the occurrence of adverse reactions in patients, with better sedative effect on patients. Quantification of dust aerosols in Earth System Models (ESMs) has important implications for water cycle and biogeochemistry studies. This study examines the global life cycle and direct radiative effects (DREs) of dust in the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Exascale Earth System Model version 1 (E3SMv1), and the impact of increasing model resolution both horizontally and vertically. The default 1° E3SMv1 captures the spatial and temporal variability in the observed dust aerosol optical depth (DAOD) reasonably well, but overpredicts dust absorption in the shortwave (SW). Simulations underestimate the dust vertical and long‐range transport, compared with the satellite dust extinction profiles. After updating dust refractive indices and correcting for a bias in partitioning size‐segregated emissions, both SW cooling and longwave (LW) warming of dust simulated by E3SMv1 are increased and agree better with other recent studies. The estimated net dust DRE of −0.42 Wm−2 represents a stronger cooling effect than the observationally based estimate −0.2 Wm−2 (−0.48 to +0.2), due to a smaller LW warming. Constrained by a global mean DAOD, model sensitivity studies of increasing horizontal and vertical resolution show strong influences on the simulated global dust burden and lifetime primarily through the change of dust dry deposition rate; there are also remarkable differences in simulated spatial distributions of DAOD, DRE, and deposition fluxes. Thus, constraining the global DAOD is insufficient for accurate representation of dust climate effects, especially in transitioning to higher‐ or variable‐resolution ESMs. Better observational constraints of dust vertical profiles, dry deposition, size, and LW properties are needed. We find that the E3SMv1 model captures the spatial and temporal variations in the observed dust aerosols reasonably well, but underestimates the amount of dust advected from desert sources to remote regions and from the ground to the upper troposphere. Based on the model projection, dust aerosols insert a stronger cooling effect on Earth than previously estimated, after we use a better representation of dust particle size and absorption of sunlight. In addition, we show that not only dust generation but also removal and vertical transport of dust are highly sensitive to the model mesh size, thus need to be quantified in development of higher resolution models. This article explores Russia's attack on Ukraine using the lens of strategic culture. Specifically, two strands in Russian strategic culture are identified. The first is a deep-seated sense of vulnerability, especially vis-à-vis "the West." To counter this perceived threat, Russia's national security establishment has long emphasized the importance of possessing strategic depth and buffer zones. The second strand revolves around a feeling of entitlement to great power status. A central component in Russia's great power vision is the right to have a sphere of influence in its Eurasian neighborhood. The article shows that Kremlin officials perceived Ukraine's drift toward the West as a major threat to both Russia's security interests and its status aspirations. As a result, Russia's rhetorical milieu regarding Ukraine became increasingly radicalized. (Ce0.002 Y0.998âˆ' x Lu x)AlO3 (x  = 0.000, 0.010, 0.100, 0.200) single crystals were grown and characterized to clarify the effects of Lu substitution in Ce:YAlO3 on its crystal structure, optical properties and thermal stability of Ce3+ luminescence. The lattice constants of (Ce0.002 Y0.798 Lu0.200)AlO3 were comparable to those of Ce:YAlO3, so the crystal structure was not significantly influenced by Lu substitution. Concerning the optical characterization, the absorption and emission spectra were almost the same regardless the amount of Lu substitution. This result is consistent with the assumption that the crystal field is not influenced by Lu substitution. The temperature dependences of the photoluminescence decay time showed that the quenching temperature (T 50%) tends to increase with the increasing Lu concentration. In 2019, Canada released its newest Arctic strategy, the Arctic and Northern Policy Framework. This is Canada's first regional strategy to deal with border management, it was co-developed with northerners, and includes four northern partner chapters in addition to those by the federal government. This article examines how border management is addressed by both the federal government and northern partners using a comprehensive approach to security that frames the analysis in the Copenhagen School's five security sectors (military, political, societal, economic, and environmental). Analysis shows that elements of border management are evident in all sectors, meaning there are a wide range of considerations for policy and practice. While border management is only prioritized in the federal chapters, this does not mean that border management is not important to northerners. For example, the partner chapters discuss issues indirectly related to the border, and border management was discussed during the strategy's consultation process. Moving forward, policy development must continue to be co-developed to ensure the needs of all regional actors are addressed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Until today, both the subsequent etiology and pathophysiology of PCOS remain unclear, and patients with PCOS that undergo assisted reproductive techniques (ART) might present a poor to exaggerated response, low oocyte quality, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome, as well as changes in the follicular fluid metabolites pattern. The town of Tiksi came into being in the 1930s, when the Soviet Union intensified its efforts to industrialize the Arctic. A critical element of that policy was to make the Northern Sea Route a viable Arctic shipping lane and Tiksi, located where the Lena River meets the Arctic Ocean, became an important transportation hub on that route. Post-Soviet transformations led to a rapid decline in population numbers and economic significance of the town, while climate change opened up new opportunities for shipping and mammoth tusk collecting. Today, the situation seems to have stabilized but the promises of a bright future pronounced in strategic papers by the government are yet to be realized. The article explores the socio-economic, infrastructural and environmental changes of recent decades in order to explore future development prospects for Tiksi. The infrastructural legacies of the Soviet past, combined with the environmental conditions of the region, result in the intertwined material dependencies of built and natural environments. Still, these material dependencies are neither straitjackets nor unchangeable. The ongoing and projected impacts from human-induced climate change highlight the need for mitigation approaches to limit warming in both the near term (<2050) and the long term (>2050). We clarify the role of non-CO2 greenhouse gases and aerosols in the context of near-term and long-term climate mitigation, as well as the net effect of decarbonization strategies targeting fossil fuel (FF) phaseout by 2050. Relying on Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change radiative forcing, we show that the net historical (2019 to 1750) radiative forcing effect of CO2 and non-CO2 climate forcers emitted by FF sources plus the CO2 emitted by land-use changes is comparable to the net from non-CO2 climate forcers emitted by non-FF sources. We find that mitigation measures that target only decarbonization are essential for strong long-term cooling but can result in weak near-term warming (due to unmasking the cooling effect of coemitted aerosols) and lead to temperatures exceeding 2 °C before 2050. In contrast, pairing decarbonization with additional mitigation measures targeting short-lived climate pollutants and N2O, slows the rate of warming a decade or two earlier than decarbonization alone and avoids the 2 °C threshold altogether. These non-CO2 targeted measures when combined with decarbonization can provide net cooling by 2030 and reduce the rate of warming from 2030 to 2050 by about 50%, roughly half of which comes from methane, significantly larger than decarbonization alone over this time frame. The photoinitiated intramolecular hydroetherification of alkenols has been used to form C−O bonds, but the intermolecular hydroetherification of alkenes with alcohols remains an unsolved challenge. We herein report the visible‐light‐promoted 2‐deoxyglycosylation of alcohols with glycals. The glycosylation reaction was completed within 2 min in a high quantum yield (ϕ=28.6). This method was suitable for a wide array of substrates and displayed good reaction yields and excellent stereoselectivity. The value of this protocol was further demonstrated by the iterative synthesis of 2‐deoxyglycans with α‐2‐deoxyglycosidic linkages up to a 20‐mer in length and digoxin with β‐2‐deoxyglycosidic linkages. We use non-equilibrium molecular dynamics oscillatory shear simulations to study frequency-dependent viscoelastic damping spanning nearly six decades in frequency range (MHz to THz), in a wide range of model glasses including binary glasses such as Cu-Zr metallic glass (MG), Wahnstr€om glass and amorphous silica, and unary glasses, namely, Dzugutov glass and amorphous silicon. First, for the Cu-Zr MG, we elucidate the role of quench rate, number of shear cycles, shear amplitude, and shear temperature on the damping characteristics. We observe striking commonalities in damping characteristics for all glasses studied—(i) a peak in the loss modulus in the highfrequency regime (~THz) and (ii) persistent damping in the low-frequency regime (extending down to 10 s of MHz). The high-frequency peak is seen to overlap with the range of natural vibrational frequencies for each glass, and arises from coupling between the excited harmonic vibrational modes. On the other hand, persistent damping at intermediate and low frequencies is shown to be a result of long time-scale local, irreversible deformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Boric acid (BA) has been used as a transparent glass matrix for optical materials for over 100 years. However, recently, apparent room‐temperature phosphorescence (RTP) from BA (crystalline and powder states) was reported (Zheng et al. Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2021, 60, 9500) when irradiated at 280 nm under ambient conditions. We suspected that RTP from their BA sample was induced by an unidentified impurity. Our experimental results show that pure BA synthesized from B(OMe)3 does not luminesce in the solid state when irradiated at 250–400 nm, while commercial BA indeed (faintly) luminesces. Our theoretical calculations show that neither individual BA molecules nor aggregates would absorb light at >175 nm, and we observe no absorption of solid pure BA experimentally at >200 nm. Therefore, it is not possible for pure BA to be excited at >250 nm even in the solid state. Thus, pure BA does not display RTP, whereas trace impurities can induce RTP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The processes taking place in the modern international system are both a catalyst and a consequence of the foreign policy of states. As a result of a number of systemic factors and the domestic political situation in Russia, the Middle East plays an important role on the Russian agenda. Moscow is pursuing an active policy towards the Libyan crisis, which resulted in the actual loss of statehood in Libya, which complicates the stabilization of the situation in the country and in the region. The purpose of this article is to analyze the systemic (independent variable) and domestic (intervening unit-level variables) processes that influence the formation of Russia's foreign policy in relation to the Libyan crisis, within the framework of the neoclassical realist theory. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as dibenzo[g,p]chrysenes (DBCs) have recently attracted much attention in synthetic organic chemistry and materials chemistry, particularly as important structural motifs in functional materials for electronic and optoelectronic devices. However, the preparation of DBCs and its derivatives generally requires multistep syntheses and the use of transition metal catalysts. This report describes a highly efficient method comprising a sequential single‐electron oxidative spirocyclization and 1,2‐aryl migration for the construction of DBCs. The combination of Mes‐Acr+ and diphenyldisulfide in the photocatalytic system enables a first single‐electron oxidation to occur preferentially at the more electron‐rich alkene moiety of a readily available starting material, followed by a second single‐electron oxidation after intramolecular spirocyclization. Experiments on simulation of smoke aerosol from burning pine wood at different ratios of smoldering and flame combustion modes were carried out in the Large Aerosol Chamber of Institute of Atmospheric Optics, Siberian Branch, Russian Academy of Science. Disclosed herein is a photoinduced selective hydroamination of ynamides with nitrogen heteroaromatic nucleophiles. By using an organocatalytic photoredox system, a direct method to construct a diverse of (Z)‐α‐azole enamides from ynamides and pyrazoles, as well as triazoles, benzotriazoles, indazoles, and tetrazoles, is developed, thus providing a photocatalytically synthetic route to heterocyclic motifs common in medicinal agents. The present research work was planned to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions of butin in preventing complete Freund's adjuvant-induced arthritis in rats. Adult Wistar rats (200–240 g) were segregated equally into four groups: Group I (normal) and Group II complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA control) were administered orally with 3 ml/kg of 0.5% SCMC (vehicle); Group III and Group IV were test groups and orally administered 25 and 50 mg/kg of butin. These oral treatments were administered for a total of 21 days. In the 21-day treatment schedule, on the first day, animals from group I (normal control) were injected a single dose of normal saline (0.1 ml) intradermally into one of the hind paws, and animals from Group II to IV were injected CFA (0.1 ml) intradermally into one of the hind paws. During the treatment schedule, the volume of the hind paw and body weight were recorded at every 7 days intervals, and animals were scored for severe arthritis on days 17, 19, and 21. On the 22nd day, samples of blood were withdrawn by puncturing the retro-orbital sinus for analysis of RBC, WBC, hemoglobin, ALT, AST, ALP, PGE2, and cytokines. After blood withdrawal, animals were euthanized; the paw was separated by cutting at the ankle joint and used for analysis of oxidative stress and antioxidant parameters, as well as for the histopathological study. Administration of butin to CFA-treated animals significantly attenuated the CFA-induced inflammatory response, oxidative stress, and reversed the histopathological alteration towards normal. According to the findings, butin has anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties in rats with CFA-induced arthritis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
