101. 5-Year survival of patients with periaortic nodal metastases in clinical stage IB and IIA cervical carcinoma

Abstract

From 1969 to 1981 thirty-six patients with stage IB and IIA cervical carcinoma were identified at pretherapy surgical staging laparotomy with histologically documented metastatic disease to the periaortic lymph nodes. All patients underwent a periaortic node dissection and all patients completed a course of extendedfield radiotherapy in a postoperative setting. No major radiotherapeutic complications were encountered. The 5-year actuarial survival rate was 50%, with a median survival time of 29 months. The median time to recurrence was 10 months, while the median duration of survival following a recurrence was 7 months. Seventy-five percent of all recurrences occurred at distant sites. These data demonstrate that survival may be favorably influenced by employing extended-field radiotherapy in those patients with early-clinical-stage cervical cancer and periaortic nodal metastases. The subsequent development of distant metastases after such a treatment regimen emphasizes the need for adjuvant cytotoxic chemotherapy to enhance overall survival.

Abstract

Minimally invasive surgery to stage early ovarian cancer is still regarded as pioneering among gynecologic oncologists. Previous retrospective experiences demonstrated the safety and feasibility of laparoscopy in this field.|To review the laparoscopic staging procedure in a series of patients with early ovarian cancer and compare results with the literature.|From January 2004 to September 2011, 19 patients with apparent early stage ovarian/fallopian tube cancer Stage IA to IC underwent either primary treatment or completion staging by laparoscopy. Surgical, pathologic, and oncologic outcomes were analyzed.|The mean operative time was 212 +/- 69 minutes. Three patients (16%) underwent fertility sparing surgery. The mean estimated blood loss was two +/- two g/dl. The mean number of pelvic and para-aortic lymph nodes collected was 17 (range 7-27) and 14 (range 8-21), respectively. The mean volume of ovarian/tubal tumor was 119 cm3 (range 1.5-500). The disease was reclassified to a higher stage in ten women (52%). One major intraoperative complication (five percent) occurred which required the conversion to laparotomy. The mean follow up period was 30 +/- 16 months (range 10-74). Overall survival and disease-free survival were 100% and 84%, respectively.|Laparoscopic staging of early ovarian cancer appears to be feasible and comprehensive when performed by gynecologic oncologists experienced with advanced laparoscopy.

Abstract

Pelvic exenteration is a salvage procedure used primarily for recurrent gynecologic carcinoma. Up to the present time, an ileal or colon conduit has been used for urinary diversion and the patient remains incontinent of urine. This is a preliminary report of nine patients with gynecologic carcinoma in whom a continent urinary diversion procedure was performed. A segment of distal ileum, the ascending colon, and part of the transverse colon are used to create the colonic reservoir. The segment of colon is opened along the tenia and folded onto itself. The walls of the ascending and transverse colon are anastomosed to detubularize this segment of bowel and eliminate the transient high pressure of the colon. Surgical staples are used for the anastomosis. The segment of ileum is tapered and three purse-string sutures (2-O silk) are placed at the level of the ileocecal valve to achieve continence. The short segment of ileum is then exteriorized as a stoma through which the patient catheterizes. Antirefluxing, non-tunneled ureterocolonic anastomoses are performed. The anterior wall of the reservoir is closed with absorbable staples. Postoperative urodynamic studies have shown maximum capacity of 750 ml and the area of continence to be at the ileocecal valve where the purse-string sutures are placed. All patients are continent and postoperative radiographs were negative for reflux. Follow-up was 6 to 12 months. The colonic reservoir is a capacious low-pressure system and warrants further clinical trials in patients with gynecologic cancer.

Abstract

Human dura mater has been utilized in various reconstructive procedures following radical pelvic surgery at the Division of Gynecologic Oncology, University of Miami School of Medicine. Our preliminary results indicate that this allograft is strong, durable, and acts as a good biological barrier. However, it does not seem to prevent the development of enteropelvic fistulae in patients who undergo total pelvic exenteration following radiotherapy. Dura mater has also been employed in abdominal hernia repairs, repair of wound dehiscenses, and in the coverage of the femoral vessels after groin dissection. Provisional results with these reconstructive techniques appear promising. These results are discussed, and suggestions regarding the use of this allograft are delineated.

Neoplastic pericarditis is a rare complication of gynecologic malignancies. However, as illustrated in the case presented, the physician involved in the care of patients with cancer should be aware of this possible life-threatening complication. The case report is followed by a brief review of the pertinent clinical, pathophysiologic, and therapeutic aspects of this condition.

Abstract

Ectoglycosyltransferase activities were measured in cultured normal and mucolipidosis II fibroblasts using endogenous glycoproteins and glycolipids and whole cells. Nucleotide pyrophosphatase, known to interfere with glycosyltransferases, was completely inhibited with 6 mM 5' AMP. Since preliminary experiments have shown multiple abnormalities of ectoglycosyltransferases in mucolipidosis II fibroblasts (Di Donato, unpublished results), galactosyl (Gal)-and N-acetylglucosaminyl (GluNac)-transferase were studied in further detail in confluent and nonconfluent cultures of normal and patient fibroblasts. Activities of both transferases on glycoproteins were higher in nonconfluent cultures. A 50% reduced activity of Gal-transferase was measured in confluent mucolipidosis II cultures and of GluNac-transferase in nonconfluent mucolipidosis II cultures towards incorporation of sugar precursors into glycoproteins. Substrate saturation kinetics of both transferases in mucolipidosis II fibroblasts revealed an abnormal Km for Gal incorporation into endogenous glycoproteins. Glycosylation of glycolipids in mucolipidosis fibroblasts was normal.

Abstract

A case of isolated tricuspid insufficiency is reported. The lesion, that at surgery resulted to be an anterior valve leaflet detachment, was well tolerated for a long time. After 23 years from the trauma the patient was successfully treated by surgical correction. The clinical features, compared to the 33 cases reported in the literature, demonstrated that the clinical course was more dramatic in patients with papillary muscle rupture than in those where the lesion was located on the chordae tendineae and/or the valves. The physical findings are characteristic but not specific of the traumatic type of tricuspidal insufficiency. However, when these symptoms are found in a patient where a trauma has previously occurred, the correct diagnosis should consider this possibility. The ECG usually shows incomplete bundle branch block, and the chest roentgenogram reveals cardiomegaly. Furthermore, the blood pressure levels in the right chambers are nearly normal. Surgery is often indicated and seems to give very good results. Our patient markedly improved after surgical treatment. Electrocardiographic and vectorcardiographic evidence of right atrial and ventricular hypertrophy was reduced as well as the roentgenographic pattern.

Abstract

Dual parameter flow cytometry, measuring DNA and nuclear protein of individual cell nuclei simultaneously, makes it possible to follow cell kinetic perturbations in six distinct compartments of the cell cycle following chemotherapy in vivo. Human ovarian cancer xenografts in nude mice from a primary and recurrent tumor of the same patient were studied. The response to intraperitoneal application of cis-platinum was assessed by tumor volume measurements, changes in labeling indices by autoradiography, and dual parameter flow cytometry. Sequential tissue samples were taken from each tumor using fine needle aspirations as a microbiopsy method. Pretherapy samples were compared to multiple specimens collected up to 18 days after therapy. Morphologic changes of each specimen were also assessed. Cis-platinum affects malignant cells in the G1B, S, G2A, and G2B compartments with various intensities and different time frames, depending on the drug sensitivity of each individual tumor.

Abstract

The conductance of potassium perchlorate in the following solvent mixtures, sulpholan + acetonitrile; sulpholan + methanol and acetonitrile + methanol, was measured at 25°C. Analysis of the association and hydrodynamic behaviour of the electrolyte in these systems shows significant differences between solvents. Comparison of these results with previous studies in water + sulpholan and ethylene carbonate + acetonitrile mixtures shows that while the influence of non protic solvents on ion pair association is negligible, hydrogen bonded solvents give ion-solvent interactions of such an extent as to modify the electrostatic short-range interaction between ions.

Abstract

Sexual function is negatively influenced by endometriosis and women with endometriosis show less sexual and partnership satisfaction compared to patients with other gynaecological disorders. This study aims to compare sexual function between patients with deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) and healthy women using Sexual Health Outcomes in Women Questionnaire (SHOW-Q).|Case-control study including 182 patients with histological diagnosis of DIE and 182 healthy women, who referred to our tertiary care university hospital from 2010 to 2012. SHOW-Q was used to collect data concerning satisfaction, orgasm, desire and pelvic problem interference with sex. The un-paired t-test was performed to compare the means of a continuous variable between groups when the data were normally distributed; otherwise the Mann-Whitney test was used to check t-test results. Pearson's χ(2) test and Z-test for proportions - independent groups were performed to investigate the difference among grouping variables.|As described in a previous study, the prevalence of sexual dysfunction in women with endometriosis is around 61% and in women with other gynaecological disorders is 35%. Assuming 5% significance and 95% power, 106 women would be required for the study. Every area of sexual function investigated through the SHOW-Q questionnaire (satisfaction, desire, orgasm and pelvic problem interference) was significantly impaired compared to healthy women. Abstract

Objectives To describe the sonographic and clinical features of abdominal wall endometriosis (AWE), a frequently misdiagnosed condition. Methods This was a retrospective study of 21 consecutive women with pathologically proven endometriosis of the abdominal wall. Ultrasonographic and Doppler examinations were performed, before surgery, with a high-frequency linear transducer. The clinical data and the results of the sonographic examinations were reviewed and described. Results At ultrasound, all the nodules appeared as discrete solid masses that were less echogenic than the surrounding hyperechoic fat. The nodules had a median diameter of 20 (range, 5–50) mm and in 18/21 (86%) cases the nodules had a round/oval shape. In eight of 21 (38%) women the AWE was located at the umbilicus, in six of 21 (29%) it was between the transverse suprapubic line and the umbilicus, in five of 21 (24%) it was found along the scar of a previous Cesarean section and in two of 21 (9%) it was in the right inguinal canal. The content was homogeneously hypoechoic in 12/21 (57%) women and inhomogeneous in the other nine (43%). The outer borders were invariably ill defined. Scarce blood vessels were found by power Doppler. Cyclic or continuous spontaneous pain at the level of the AWE was present in 19/21 (91%) cases, and two (9%) patients were asymptomatic. Conclusions Hypoechoic round/oval nodules with ill-defined borders and a hyperechoic rim should raise the suspicion of abdominal wall endometriosis, even in patients with no history of endometriosis or previous laparotomic surgery. Abstract

We report a case of a 33-year-old nulligravid woman admitted to our institution in May 2014 with an incidental ultrasound finding of a 5 cm right adnexal mass. Medical and gynecological history was unremarkable and she did not complain of visual changes, galactorrhea or any other endocrinologic symptoms. Pelvic examination revealed an enlarged and tender right ovary. Transvaginal ultrasound showed a 56 × 48 mm right ovarian unilocular cyst, containing anechoic and hyperechoic components with posterior acoustic shadowing, poorly vascularized, suggestive of a dermoid cyst.

Abstract

Objective(s) To evaluate the prevalence of adenomyosis in patients undergoing surgery for endometriosis. Study design Retrospective study including 1618 women with preoperative clinical and ultrasound diagnosis of endometriosis. As preoperative assessment, all patients underwent ultrasound to assess endometriosis and all features associated with adenomyosis (heterogeneous myometrial echotexture, globular-appearing uterus, asymmetrical thickness of anteroposterior wall of the myometrium, subendometrial myometrial cysts, subendometrial echogenic linear striations or poor definition of the endometrial–myometrial junction). Results Adenomyosis was present in 353/1618 (21.8%) women included in the study. Multivariate analysis showed that the prevalence of adenomyosis was significantly associated with deep infiltrating endometriosis, parity, dysmenorrhea intensity and women's age ( P Conclusion(s) Adenomyosis is a common condition but its aetiology and natural history are still unknown. Our experience showed a 21.8% of prevalence of adenomyosis in patients affected by endometriosis and its association with parous women, increasing age, dysmenorrhea intensity and with the presence of deep infiltrating endometriosis.

Abstract

Background Deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) can affect importantly patients' quality of life (QOL). The aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of the laparoscopic management of DIE on QOL after six months from treatment. Methods It is a prospective cohort study. In a tertiary care university hospital, between April 2008 and December 2009, 100 patients underwent laparoscopic management of DIE and completed preoperatively and 6-months postoperatively a QOL questionnaire, the short form 36 (SF-36). Quality of life was measured through the SF-36 scores. Intra-operative details of disease site, number of lesions, type of intervention, period of hospital stay and peri-operative complications were noted. Results Six months postoperatively all the women had a significant improvement in every scale of the SF-36 (p < 0,0005). Among patients with intestinal DIE, significant differences in postoperative scores of SF-36 were not detected between patients submitted to nodule shaving and segmental resection (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the SF-36 scores at 6 months from surgery between patients who received postoperative medical treatment and patients who did not (p > 0.05). Conclusions Laparoscopic excision of DIE lesions significantly improves general health and psycho-emotional status at six months from surgery without differences between patients submitted to intestinal segmental resection or intestinal nodule shaving.

Abstract

We have studied the phi -> a(0)(980)gamma process with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory DA Phi NE by detecting the phi -> eta pi(0)gamma decays in the final states with eta -> gamma gamma and eta -> pi(+)pi(-)pi(0). We have measured the branching ratios for both final states: Br(phi -> eta pi(0)gamma) = (7.01 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.20) x 10(-5) and (7.12 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.22) x 10(-5), respectively. We have also extracted the a(0)(980) mass and its couplings to eta pi(0), K(+)K(-), and to the phi meson from the fit of the eta pi(0) invariant mass distributions using different phenomenological models.

Abstract

Using a sample of over 600 million phi->K+K- decays collected at the Dafne e+e- collider, we have measured with the KLOE detector the absolute branching ratios for the charged kaon semileptonic decays, K+/- -> p0 e nu (gamma) (Ke3) and K+/- -> p0 mu nu (gamma) (Kmu3). The results, BR(Ke3) = 0.04965 +/- 0.00038_{stat} +/- 0.00037_{syst} and BR(Kmu3) = 0.03233 +/- 0.00029_{stat} +/- 0.00026_{syst}, are inclusive of radiation. Accounting for correlations, we derive the ratio Kmu3/Ke3 = 0.6511+/-0.0064. Abstract

Recent results obtained by the KLOE experiment operating at DAPhiNE, the Frascati phi-factory, are presented. From a sample of about 10(9) phi-mesons produced at DAPhiNE, we select K-L and K-S tagged mesons. We present the preliminary results on the search for K-S --> 3pi(0), the branching ratio of the decay K-S --> pienu, and on the major K-L branching ratios, including the semileptonic decays relevant for the \V-us\ determination. A preliminary measurement of the K-L lifetime, using K-L --> pi(0)pi(0)pi(0) decays, is also given.

Abstract

We have searched with the KLOE detector for the P and CP violating decay eta --> pi(+)pi(-) in a sample of 1.55 x 10(7) eta's from the decay phi --> etagamma of phi-mesons produced in e(+)e(-) annihilations at DAPhiNE. No signal is found. We obtain the upper limit BR(eta --> pi(+)pi(-)) < 1.3 x 10(-5) at 90% confidence level. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract

In the fixed energy environment of the e +e - collider DAΦNE, KLOE can measure the cross section of the process e +e - → hadrons as a function of the hadronic system energy using the radiative return. At energies below 1 GeV, e +e - → π → π +π - is the dominating hadronic process. We report here on the status of the analysis for the e +e - → π +π - γ channel, which allows to obtain a preliminary measurement of the pion form factor using an integrated luminosity of ∼ 73pb -1.

Abstract

The Frascati e +e - collider, DAΨNE, operates at a center of mass energy of ∼1020MeV, the mass of the φ-meson. Three detectors have been realized, KLOE, DEAR, and FINUDA. The first two are presently collecting data in the two DAΨNE interaction regions (IR), while the third is being assembled in its pit inside the DAΨNE hall and will take data in the IR occupied by DEAR. The KLOE experiment, which is designed to measure CP and CPT violation parameters in the K SK L system, has collected so far ∼300 pb -1. Measurements obtained using the year 2000 data sample will be presented, which are focussed on K S physics and φ radiative decays. The DEAR experiment aims at studying the scattering lengths of the kaon-nucleon system, through a precise measurement of the K α line shifts in kaonic hydrogen and kaonic deuterium. With 2001 and 2002 data-taking periods the DEAR collaboration has demonstrated the capability of creating and detecting exotic atoms using the kaon flux from DAΨNE, by measuring the X-ray spectrum of kaonic nitrogen. The present status and perspectives of the DEAR experiment will be discussed. A brief report will be given at the end on the FINUDA physics program, aiming at the study of the A-hypernuclei levels and lifetimes.

The KLOE detector was designed primarily For the study of CP violation in neutral kaon decays at DAPhiNE, the Frascati Phi-factory. The detector consists of a tracker and an electromagnetic calorimeter. A lead-scintillating-fiber sampling calorimeter satisfies best the requirements of the experiment. providing adequate energy resolution and superior timing accuracy. We describe in the following the construction of the calorimeter, its calibration and how the calorimeter information is used to obtain energy, point of entry and time of the arrival of photons, electrons and charged particles. With e(+)e(-) collision data at DAPhiNE for an integrated luminosity of some 2 pb(-1) we find for electromagnetic showers, an energy resolution of 5.7%/rootE(GeV) and a time resolution of 54/rootE(GeV) ps. Abstract

The design and construction of the large Drift Chamber for the KLOE experiment at the Frascati φ-factory, DAΦNE, are described. The relevant aspects of the various elements of the detector are reviewed together with a description of the track reconstruction program and of the calibration procedures. The performance of the detector based on measurements with cosmic rays and with e+e− colliding beams during DAΦNE commissioning is presented.

Abstract

The KLOE detector is operational since spring '99 at DAPhiNE, the Frascati e(+)e(-) collider, a phi-factory running at 1.02 GeVc.m. energy. This detector has been designed and built with the primary goal of measuring Re(epsilon'/epsilon), the CP violation parameter in the kaon system, with a sensitivity of about one part in ten thousands. Apart from CP studies in the kaon system. KLOE has a rich scientific program that can be exploited with an integrated luminosity not far from the one which has already been collected, namely the study of phi decays into scalar and pseudoscalar mesons, the measurement of the hadronic cross-section up to I GeV rare kaon decays, phi decays into three pions. Since the detector installation there have been three periods of stable data taking and a total amount of similar to200 pb(-1) has been collected by end of 2001, corresponding to similar to6.7 . 10(8) phi mesons and to -8.7 . 10(6) eta mesons., being BR(phi --> etagamma) = (1.297 +/- 0.033) . 10(-2). We present the results obtained, for a data sample of 17 pb(-1) collected in the year 2000, for phi --> etagamma and phi --> eta'gamma: the ratio of these two BR's has been measured to be (5.3 +/- 0.5 +/- 0.4) . 10(-3), leading to a very accurate determination of the mixing angle in the flavor basis phi(p) = (40(-1.5)(+1.7))degrees and to the most accurate determination of BR(phi --> eta'gamma) to date: (6.8 +/- 0.6 +/- 0.5) . 10(-5). From the ratio BR(phi --> etagamma)/BR(phi --> pi(0)gamma) we have extracted the value BR(phi --> pi(0)y) = (1.377 +/- 0.007 +/- 0.05) . 10(-3).

Abstract

We have measured the branching ratio BR(phi-->pi(0)pi(0)gamma) with the KLOE detector using a sample of similar to5x10(7) phi decays. phi mesons are produced at DAPhiNE, the Frascati phi-factory. We find BR(phi-->pi(0)pi(0)gamma) = (1.09+/-0.03(stat)+/-0.05(syst)) x 10(-4). We fit the two-pion mass spectrum to models to disentangle contributions from various sources. Abstract

In a sample of 5.3 x 10(7), phi-decays observed with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory DAPhiDNE we find 605 etapi(o)gamma events with eta --> gammagamma and 197 etapi(o)gamma events with eta --> pi(+)pi(-)pi(o). The decay etapi(o)gamma is dominated by the process phi --> a(o)gamma. From a fit to the etapi(o) mass spectrum we find BR(phi --> a(o)(980)gamma) = (7.4 +/- 0.7) x 10(-5).

Abstract

We evaluated the association between age at onset of Friedreich's ataxia and alleles of two restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLP) at D9S15 and D9S5 in the 9q13-9q21.1 region. We studied 65 Italian patients from 49 families. Age at onset was not normally distributed in our patients, suggesting allelic heterogeneity. Patients homozygous for allele 1 of MspI RFLP detected by probe MCT112 at D9S15 (M1) had an earlier onset (mean 9.3, SD 3.4 years) than patients homozygous for allele 2 (M2; mean 12.1, SD 4.3). Heterozygotes had an onset age similar to that of the M2 homozygotes. These findings suggest that the M1 allele might be a marker of one allelic early-onset Friedreich's ataxia mutation.

Abstract

A double-level trigger system has been developed for the KLOE experiment. Custom electronics asserts a trigger in a 2 mus decision time. The decision is based on the combined information of the electromagnetic calorimeter and the drift chamber. The entire trigger system is continuously monitored, and data flowing from the trigger system hal e allowed both an efficient online monitoring of the detector and an online luminosity measurement. Abstract

The main aim of the KLOE experiment at DA Phi NE, the Frascati phi -factory, is to study CP violation in the K-0-(K) over bar (0) system. Requirements on shower detection are very stringent. An hermetic, lead-scintillating fiber sampling calorimeter has been chosen and built. A review of the methods used to calibrate and reconstruct energy and timing is reported in this paper. Emphasis is given to the calibration procedures developed using the 2.4 pb(-1) collected in 1999. An energy resolution of 5.7% rootE/GeV is achieved together with a linearity in energy response better than 1% above 50 MeV. A time resolution of similar to 54 ps/ rootE/GeV is also measured on samples of radiative Bhabha and Phi decays. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Ail rights reserved.

Abstract

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors reduce mortality, the development of remodeling, left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, and ischemic events, both when administered alone as long-term treatment in patients with impaired LV function and/or heart failure (HF) and as short-term treatment, early after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and/or HF. The few data available on the use of ACE inhibitors in the elderly after AMI are conflicting. Nothing is known about the effects of ACE inhibitors in elderly postinfarction patients with preserved LV function: these patients have a remarkable medium- to long-term mortality and HF incidence after infarction. The aim of this study is to evaluate, in patients with AMI agedor =65 years, the effects of Perindopril on the combined outcome of death, hospitalization for HF, and heart remodeling, considered to be aor =8% increase in LV end-diastolic volume (LVEDV). Secondary objectives include the same factors listed in the primary end points but considered separately. In addition, safety of the drug, ventricular remodeling, and adaptation are being evaluated. A total of 1100 patients with AMI (first episode or reinfarction), agedor =65 years, and preserved or only moderately depressed LV (LV ejection fractionor =40%), are to be enrolled and randomly assigned to treatment (8 mg for 12 months of Perindopril or placebo, in double-blind conditions). Clinical assessment is performed at fixed times, and periodic evaluations of (1) ventricular shape, dimensions, and function by quantitative 2-D echocardiography, and (2) heart rate variability and arrhythmias by ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring are anticipated. The results and conclusions will be available by 2002 year.

Abstract

The Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) locus is localized on chromosome 9q13 in an interval less than 1 Mb between markers D9S202/FR1 and FR5. We cloned the FRDA candidate region in YACs, and we started a systematic search for transcripts in this region using the cDNA selection approach. Several overlapping cDNA clones mapping near the telomeric end of the FRDA minimum genetic region were isolated. Zoo blot analysis demonstrated that these cDNAs are well conserved among different species. A transcript of 4.8 kb was identified by hybridization to a Northern blot containing human brain poly(A)+ RNA. Partial sequence of these clones showed 100\% homology with a previously described anonymous brain cDNA (EST01251). A search for mutations of this gene in FRDA patients and carriers is in progress. No mutations have been found to date, but we have identified a DNA polymorphism. This polymorphism was nonrecombinant with the disease in a previously described FRDA pedigree in which a recombination had occurred with more telomeric markers.

Abstract

The frequency of consanguineous marriages up to second-cousin degree has been carefully established in the past for each of the 95 Italian provinces using the Archive of about 500,000 dispensations given by the Catholic church for such marriages over a 55-year period. It has therefore been possible to compare the frequency of consanguineous marriages observed among 83 couples of parents of Friedreich patients with the frequency of consanguineous marriages of the same degree in the different Italian provinces during the same years. From these data, an estimate of the incidence of the disease has been obtained for the whole nation (between 1/22,000 and 1/25,000). In Southern Italy, where 16 out of the 18 consanguineous marriages among Friedreich parents are concentrated, the incidence of the disease is similar (between 1/25,000 and 1/28,000). This study indicates that the Archive of consanguinity existing in Italy allows a reliable comparison of the frequency of consanguineous marriages among parents of patients with that of the general population. The same method can therefore be applied to the study of incidence of other autosomal recessive disorders in Italy.

Abstract

The main goal of the KLOE experiment at the Frascati DAPhiNE phi -factory is the study CP violation in kaon decays. The tracking device of the experiment is a drift chamber whose dimensions, 4 m of diameter and 3.3 m length, provide a large acceptance volume for the decay products of low momentum K-L (lambda(L) = 3.4m). A complete stereo geometry with 12.582 cells arranged in 58 layers guarantees a high and uniform efficiency in the reconstruction of the charged K-L decays. Very light materials have been chosen both for the drift medium, a helium-based gas mixture, and for the mechanical structure, made of carbon fiber, to minimize multiple scattering and conversion of low-energy photons. The design requirements, the adopted solutions together with the calibration procedure and the tracking performances of the drift chamber are discussed. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract

To evaluate whether deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE) is associated with tubal alterations.|This was a retrospective study. Our study included 335 women with ovarian endometriosis (Group A), 66 women with DIE (Group B), and 72 women presenting with both conditions (Group C). We evaluated tubal morphology and patency during laparoscopic excision of endometriosis. Tubal patency was assessed by tubal dye test. Tubal morphology was determined using the tubal morphology score (TMS), obtained by a total grade of 4 parameters: tubal caliber, course, surface and fimbrial morphology.|There was no significant difference in the 3 groups regarding the presence of tubal occlusion (p = 0.23). Total TMS was not significantly different in the 3 groups (p = 0.13). A history of surgical treatment for endometriosis was associated with higher rate of tubal occlusion (p < 0.0005) and more severe morphological alterations (p < 0.0005). There was a positive correlation between number of previous surgical interventions and worse TMS (rho = 0.197, p < 0.0005).|Alterations in tubal patency and morphology were not significantly different in patients with DIE as compared to women with ovarian endometriosis. History of surgical interventions for endometriosis was related with the presence of tubal alterations.
