Abstract: Purpose In the midst of a pandemic, residency interviews transitioned to a virtual format for the first time. Little is known about the effect this will have on the match process. The study aim is to evaluate resident application processes and perceived outcomes. Methods An electronic survey was distributed to 142 colon and rectal surgery residency applicants (95% of total). Results A total of 77 applicants responded to the survey (54% response rate). Applicants reported high levels of satisfaction with virtual interviews but less comfort. Utilizing the mute button and using notes in a different way from face-to-face interviews were significantly associated with applicant confidence that they ranked the right program highest. A majority of applicants (73%) would recommend virtual interviews next year even if COVID-19 is not a factor. Conclusion While applicants appear generally satisfied with virtual interviews, they also reported less comfort. Applicant confidence was predicted by utilizing the unique technological affordances offered by the virtual platform.

Abstract: Aims In patients with chronic advanced heart failure (HF) signs of congestion are not always evident on clinical examination. We aim to validate the ultrasound (US)-assessed jugular vein distensibility (JVD), as a non-invasive tool to identify patients with normal right atrial pressure (RAP≤7 mmHg). Methods and Results In a single-center prospective study, we assessed chronic HF patients with a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF)7 mmHg (area under the curve [AUC] of 0.74; p1.6, n=42; median RAP 4 mmHg). Then, we tested the threshold in 101 patients (validation cohort), where we found comparable results (AUC of 0.82; p Conclusion US-assessed JVD is an accurate diagnostic tool to identify advanced HF patients with normal RAP. This tool could be tested in the ambulatory setting to modulate diuretic/vasodilator therapies.

104. 139 INTRAVENOUS CONTINUOUS HOME INOTROPIC THERAPY IN ADVANCED HEART FAILURE - RESULTS AND PRACTICAL GUIDELINES

Abstract: Background no firm data exist regarding continuous intravenous inotropic infusion in outpatients with advanced heart failure (AHF). Methods We reviewed medical records of all inotrope dependent patients discharged from our institution on continuous home inotropes infusion for AHF after a hospitalization between 2014 and 2021. Indications for inotropic agents included bridge to transplant (BTT) or to candidacy (BTC) strategies or palliative care. We compared the number of hospitalizations the year before and the year after beginning the inotrope continuous infusion, assessing the main hospital diagnosis and the duration of hospital recovery in days, through hospital charts revision. Moreover, we used a linkert 7 item scale to assess quality of life (QoL) and, using peripheral blood sample, we esteemed the end organ damage trend evaluating NTproBNP, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and bilirubin. Results From 2014 to 2021, 27 patients (Median age 56 years (Q1-Q3 50-63 years), 74% male and 26% female) were dismissed with continuous inotrope infusion from our institution. The total number of days of hospital stay was 1591 the year before beginning inotropic support (average 58.93 ± 38.70 for patient), significantly different if compared with the post inotropes period (average 22,19 ± 36,84 days for patients, IC 95% 17,488-55,994 p < 0,001). Moreover, the number of hospitalizations per patient fell from 1.93 ± 0.997 to 0,93 ± 0,958 (IC 95% 0,522- 1,478, p < 0,001). After 6 months, 53% of the patients experienced an improvement in quality of life. Regarding end organ damage, while creatinine and BUN showed a significant reduction in the first month, with a trend to stability in the following period, bilirubin and NTproBNP significantly trended to reduction during the 6 month of monitoring. Conclusions In a real world population of contemporary AHF, continuous inotropes home infusion documented an improvement in hospitalization, QoL and end organ damage. We offer a practical guideline on initiation, selection and maintenance of chronic inotrope therapy in a population of challenging patients.

Abstract: Background Risk scores are important tools for the prognostic stratification of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Their performance and the additional impact of comorbidities across age groups is unknown. Methods Patients with PAH enrolled from 2001 to 2021 were divided in ≥ 65 years old vs Results Among 383 patients, 152 (40%) were ≥ 65 years old. Older patients had more comorbidities, with the exception of obesity and diabetes (number of comorbidities 2, IQR 1-3, vs 1, IQR 0-2 in Conclusions Risk scores have similar accuracy in the prognostic stratification of older vs younger PAH patients. REVEAL 2.0 had the best performance in older patients. Comorbidities increased the accuracy of risk scores only in younger patients.

106. 111 POST-OPERATIVE OUTCOME OF ADULT PATIENTS WITH PRE-TRICUSPID SHUNT UNDERGOING DEFECT CLOSURE

Abstract: Background patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) associated with corrected congenital heart disease (CHD) have a worse prognosis than other 3 groups of patients with PAH associated with CHD (Eisenmenger, small defect, prevalent systemic-to-pulmonary shunt). For this reason, in CHD the indication and timing of defect repair should be evaluated carefully. Current recommendations rely essentially on pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) when deciding about defect closure, but this may be insufficient as PAH may develop even in cases of normal pre-operative PVR. In particular, patients with PVR below 3 WU are usually deemed operable and patients between 3 and 5 WU (gray zone) are deemed operable in case of significant persistence of left-to-right shunt. Detecting preoperative characteristics of patients who developed PAH after pre-tricuspid shunt repair can be helpful when deciding about CHD correction. Methods we enrolled adult patients referred to our centre for the suspicious of PAH after pre-tricuspid shunt correction from 2006 to 2021. We evaluated clinical, echocardiographic and hemodynamic parameters before and after defect repair (a post-correction hemodynamic evaluation was performed only in case of non-invasive signs of PAH) and PAH after defect closure was defined by the concomitant occurrence of a mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) >25 mmHg and PVR >3 WU. Continuous variables were summarized using mean and standard deviation and Student's t-test was used for comparisons. Results sixty patients were included in the final analysis. After shunt repair, 10 patients (16.6%) were diagnosed with PAH during the long-term follow-up, with no differences given by the type of defect or type of correction. As expected, these patients already had an abnormal baseline hemodynamic profile: 7 had a clear PAH diagnosis before the correction [mPAP >25 mmHg with PVR between 3 and 5 WU and with a pulmonary/systemic cardiac output ratio of at least 1.5] while 3 had pulmonary hypertension related to high pulmonary blood flow (mPAP >25 mmHg and PVR Conclusions currently there are no established evidence-based algorithms to predict the development of PAH after defect correction. Our study shows that this condition may persist or develop even when PVR values are lower than 5 WU despite a significant left-to-right shunt before defect closure. Patients with grey zone PVR values require a global clinical, instrumental and hemodynamic assessment that takes into account more than bare calculated PVR that, especially in patients with a high pulmonary blood flow, can be less reliable.

107. 270 PARTICULAR MISDIAGNOSED ACS-NSTEMI IN A YOUNG ADULT WITH HISTORY OF HODGKIN'S LYMPHOMA IN THE ERA OF FREQUENT SARS-COV2 RELATED MYOCARDITIS: NOTHING SHOULD EVER BE LEFT TO CHANCE

Abstract: Background Radiotherapy plays a key role in the multimodality treatment of thoracic tumors. Radiotherapy-induced heart disease (RIHD) has become an increasingly recognized adverse reaction contributing to major radiation-associated toxicities, including nonmalignant death. Especially patients with diseases with excellent prognosis, such as breast cancer or Hodgkin's lymphoma, may suffer from delayed side effects 2-6 including RIHD in a dose-dependent manner. The pathological spectrum of RIHD includes conduction abnormalities, valvular disease, coronary artery disease, pericarditis and pericardial constriction or effusion, cardiomyopathy, and myocardial fibrosis. Here we describe the case of a young man cured of Hodgkin's lymphoma who presented to our laboratory with the diagnosis of suspected myocarditis in the Sars-COV 2 era, but the presenting clinical picture confused the clinicians and complex coronary artery disease was behind it. Method-Clinical Case A young 33-years-old man presented to the emergency room with typical exertional chest pain. Clinical history: smoker patient who denied familiarity for cardiovascular diseases, dyslipidemic, 10 years previously underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy for Hodgkin's Lymphoma in complete remission. A nasopharyngeal molecular swab for Sars-COV 2 was performed, which was negative. The presentation electrocardiogram (EKG) documented nonspecific repolarization abnormalities; the myocardionecrosis enzyme curve performed at three times was frankly positive with elevated PCR values (102 pg/ml). Color Doppler echocardiography documented a left ventricular ejection fraction at the lower limits of normal, hypokinesia of the mid-basal segments of the infer-posterolateral wall with moderate mitral valve regurgitation. On suspicion of acute myocarditis, the patient was transferred to the Coronary Care Unit and, during admission, underwent MRI, which showed a slightly enlarged left ventricle (DTD 58 mm, EDV 147 ml), slightly depressed systolic function (LVEF 46%), akinesia of the proximal lateral and mid-proximal wall. In delayed enhancement sequences late persistence of gadolinium in the endomesocardium (60%), proximal lateral and mid-proximal wall with involvement of areas adjacent to the base of implantation of both papillary muscles. In light of the instrumental picture, the patient underwent coronarography, which showed an unexpected nightmare picture, given his young age. Circumflex branch (lcx-lesion culprit) suboccluded to the middle segment with TIMI I downstream flow at the bifurcation with a prominent obtuse marginal branch (OM) with a delayed reperfusion (Medina 1,1,1); diffusely atheromatous left anterior descending artery (LAD), showing 70% complex critical disease in the proximal segment at the bifurcation with a first diagonal branch of good caliber and good distribution area (Medina 1,1,1). Clinical resolution/Results Therefore, in a patient with misdiagnosed ACS-NSTEMI, two complex coronary bifurcation angioplasties according to TAP technique (Fig 3-4) were performed through left radial access with Slender 7 in 6 introducer at one time. The following drugs were administered in the cath-lab: Cangrelor bolus/kg followed by continuous infusion for 2 hours and Prasugrel 60 mg, initially UFH 5000 IU and anticoagulation control according to ACT during the procedure. The procedure ended with complete revascularization and asymptomatic patient. During the following days of hospitalization, no late electrical or mechanical complications occurred. Conclusions The one just described represents a complex and unexpected scenario for a young adult. The literature available has analyzed the pathophysiology of myocardial damage resulting from exposure to high amounts of radiation in patients undergoing curative radiotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma. It is now generally accepted that the most common clinical syndromes after irradiation are pericarditis in acute and chronic forms,. However, coronary vessel lesions have been considered exceptionally rare, so the true pathophysiological triggering mechanism is still poorly understood. The most widely accepted hypothesis on the onset of RICHD is a dual pathway of vascular damage ("two-hit combined hypothesis"). The most important preventive measure regarding RICHD is dose minimization. Few data are available in the literature on outcomes according to the revascularization strategy adopted in patients with RICHD (PCI vs. CABG). Morbidity and mortality from post-radiotherapy cardiovascular complications in patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma must be reduced through close cardiological surveillance in primary prevention and a close collaboration between oncologists and cardiologists in order to minimize any deleterious complications, especially in the young. Further research is needed to elucidate profibrotic mechanisms, identify promising therapies that can be implemented early during the course of treatment and to compare revascularization strategies with longer-term mortality in such patients, in order to guide the physicians in the decision-making.

Abstract: BACKGROUND The efficacy of preoperative oral antibiotics alone compared to mechanical bowel preparation and oral antibiotics in minimally invasive surgery is still a matter of ongoing debate. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to assess the trend of surgical site infection rates in parallel to the utilization of bowel preparation modality over time for minimally invasive surgery colorectal surgeries in the United States. DESIGN Retrospective analysis. SETTINGS The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. PATIENTS Adult patients who underwent elective colorectal surgery and reported bowel preparation modality. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The trends and compare surgical site infection rates for mutually exclusive groups according to the underlying disease (colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and diverticular disease) who underwent bowel preparation using oral antibiotics or combined mechanical bowel preparation and oral antibiotics. Patients who had rectal surgery were analyzed separately. RESULTS A total of 30,939 patients were included. Of them, 12,417 (40%) had rectal resections. Abstract: There is limited data about the safety of colorectal surgery after immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI). We aimed to share our experience about postoperative outcomes of colorectal surgery for patients treated with ICI. Overall, 31 patients were identified, 22 (71%) underwent elective and nine (29%) underwent emergent/urgent surgery. The 30-day Clavien Dindo class ≥ III complication rates were 27.3% (n = 6) for elective and 55.5% (n = 5) for emergent/urgent cases. Four patients underwent emergency surgery for immune-related colonic perforation and developed postoperative septic shock; two died. Considering patients’ comorbidities, cancer stage, and surgical complexity, elective colorectal surgery after ICI seems relatively safe. However, emergent/urgent colorectal surgery was associated with high postoperative morbidity. Indeed, colonic perforation in the setting of ICI treatment has a significant risk of postoperative mortality. Therefore, for patients on ICI with any acute abdominal symptoms, surgical consult should be involved, and colon perforation should be ruled out.

Abstract: Detector characterization and data quality studies -- collectively referred to as {\em DetChar} activities in this article -- are paramount to the scientific exploitation of the joint dataset collected by the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA global network of ground-based gravitational-wave (GW) detectors. They take place during each phase of the operation of the instruments (upgrade, tuning and optimization, data taking), are required at all steps of the dataflow (from data acquisition to the final list of GW events) and operate at various latencies (from near real-time to vet the public alerts to offline analyses). This work requires a wide set of tools which have been developed over the years to fulfill the requirements of the various DetChar studies: data access and bookkeeping; global monitoring of the instruments and of the different steps of the data processing; studies of the global properties of the noise at the detector outputs; identification and follow-up of noise peculiar features (whether they be transient or continuously present in the data); quick processing of the public alerts. The present article reviews all the tools used by the Virgo DetChar group during the third LIGO-Virgo Observation Run (O3, from April 2019 to March 2020), mainly to analyse the Virgo data acquired at EGO. Concurrently, a companion article focuses on the results achieved by the DetChar group during the O3 run using these tools., Comment: 44 pages, 16 figures. Abstract: We report results of $\Lambda$ hyperon production in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering off deuterium, carbon, iron, and lead targets obtained with the CLAS detector and the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility 5.014~GeV electron beam. These results represent the first measurements of the $\Lambda$ multiplicity ratio and transverse momentum broadening as a function of the energy fraction~($z$) in the current and target fragmentation regions. The multiplicity ratio exhibits a strong suppression at high~$z$~and~an enhancement at~low~$z$. The measured transverse momentum broadening is an order of magnitude greater than that seen for light mesons. This indicates that the propagating entity interacts very strongly with the nuclear medium, which suggests that propagation of diquark configurations in the nuclear medium takes place at least part of the time, even at high~$z$. The trends of these results are qualitatively described by the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport model, particularly for the multiplicity ratios. Abstract: We report the first measurement of $x_B$-scaling in $(e,e'p)$ cross-section ratios off nuclei relative to deuterium at large missing-momentum of $350 \leq p_{miss} \leq 600$ MeV/c. The observed scaling extends over a kinematic range of $0.7 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$, which is significantly wider than $1.4 \leq x_B \leq 1.8$ previously observed for inclusive $(e,e')$ cross-section ratios. The $x_B$-integrated cross-section ratios become constant (i.e., scale) beginning at $p_{miss}\approx k_F$, the nuclear Fermi momentum. Comparing with theoretical calculations we find good agreement with Generalized Contact Formalism calculations for high missing-momentum ($> 375$ MeV/c), suggesting the observed scaling results from interacting with nucleons in short-range correlated (SRC) pairs. Abstract: Objective To evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), disease activity, treatment adherence, and work ability in the real-world setting in patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). Methods QUASAR was a prospective 12-month, observational study involving 23 rheumatology centres across Italy, including adult patients with axSpA according to the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society (ASAS) criteria. Patients were followed at baseline, 3, 6, and 12 months for disease activity and health-related QoL (HRQoL), treatment adherence and work ability. Regression analysis was used to assess the association between treatment and outcome variables. Results 413 (80.7%) out of axSpA 512 patients were diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and 99 (19.3%) with non-radiographic axSpA (nr-AxSpA). Nr-AxSpA and AS patients had similar baseline disease activity and HRQoL. Biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) were the most frequent medication (n=426, 83.2%). Over the 1-year follow-up, disease activity measures (joint pain and swelling, CRP, global assessment, BASDAI, ASDAS), HRQoL and work ability significantly improved, while few differences emerged between nr-AxSpA and AS patients. Treatment satisfaction and adherence questionnaires improved over the 12 months. Patients treated with bDMARDs showed improved outcomes for disease activity measures and HRQoL variables, greater benefit observed in patients with AS. Conclusion We found clinical and HRQoL improvement over 1 year in a large, real-world population of nr-AxSpA and AS patients treated with bDMARDs or conventional synthetic DMARDs.

Abstract: Our research is based on the possibility of adapting the M.B.N to interpretative research on the own productions of visual art, of thesis students of the U.N.A. In the development of this adaptation, we have managed to define some phases of the method. The completed work is the object of investigation. Then a story is built around the author / artist’s experiences. These experiences are centrally related to at least one of the elements of the image. The reflections / interpretations that accompany the story have the function of making the narrator break in, no longer as a chronicler, but as his own interlocutor, an exegete of himself. So far, our research allowed us to develop a typology of narrative theses. We advance in the description of the method used by the authors, as the work with their referents produces meanings since they can be used as necessary heuristics within this adaptation., Nuestra investigación se funda en la posibilidad de adaptar el Método Biográfico Narrativo (M.B.N) a las investigaciones interpretativas sobre las propias producciones de arte visual, de tesistas de la Universidad Nacional de las Artes (U.N.A). En el desarrollo de dicha adaptación, hemos logrado definir algunas fases del método. La obra concluida es el objeto de investigación. Luego se construye un relato en torno a experiencias del autor/artista. Dichas experiencias, están centralmente relacionadas con al menos uno de los elementos de la imagen. Las reflexiones/interpretaciones que acompañan al relato, tienen la función de hacer irrumpir al narrador, ya no como cronista, sino como su propio interlocutor, un exégeta de sí mismo. Hasta aquí, nuestra investigación permitió desarrollar una tipología de tesis narrativas. Avanzamos en la descripción del método utilizado por los autores, en tanto el trabajo con sus referentes producen sentidos dado que pueden ser utilizados como heurísticos necesarios, dentro de esta adaptación.

Abstract: To date, there is no cohort in the literature focusing on the impact of the type of anastomosis in robotic ileocolonic resections for Crohn’s Disease (CD). We aimed to compare short-term postoperative outcomes of robotic ileocolic resection for CD between patients who had intracorporeal (ICA) or extracorporeal anastomosis (ECA). We retrospectively included all consecutive robotic ileocolonic resections for CD at our institution between 2014 and 2020. We compared baseline, perioperative characteristics, and postoperative outcomes between ICA and ECA. The analysis included 89 patients: 71% underwent ICA and 29% ECA. Groups were similar in age, sex, body mass index, smoking, CD duration, Montreal classification, surgical history, and previous CD medical treatments. 131. Influence of the device used for obstructive sleep apnea diagnosis on body position: a comparison between polysomnography and portable monitor.

Abstract: Purpose: Different devices have been used for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which differ in the number of sensors used. The numerous sensors used in more complex sleep studies such as in-lab polysomnography may influence body position during sleep. We hypothesized that patients submitted to in-lab polysomnography (PSG) would spend more time in the supine position than patients submitted to an ambulatory Portable Monitor (PM) sleep study. Methods: Body position during PSG and PM studies was compared among two distinct groups of patients matched for age, body-mass index (BMI), apnea–hypopnea index (AHI), and gender. Predictors of time spent in the supine position were determined using a multiple linear regression model. Results: Of 478 participants who underwent either PSG or PM studies, mean age: 61[43–66] years; males: 43.9%; BMI: 28.4[26.1–31.1]kg/m2; AHI 14[7–27] events/hour). Participants who underwent PSG studies spent more time in the supine position (41[16–68]% than participants who underwent PM studies (34[16–51]%), P = 0.014. Participants with OSA spent more time in the supine position than participants without OSA, both among the PSG and PM groups P < 0.05). Gender, BMI, OSA severity, and sleep study type were independent predictors of time spent in the supine position. Conclusion: In-lab PSG may increase time spent in the supine position and overestimate OSA severity compared to a PM sleep study. OSA diagnosis is also associated with increased time spent in the supine position. Abstract: During COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals changed visitation policy to limit the infection spread. We aimed to evaluate the impact of evolving visitation policy on short-term surgical outcomes.All adult patients who underwent colorectal surgery between January 1A total of 439 patients were included. Of them, 128 (29.2%) patients had surgery during the NVA policy, and 311 (70.8%) patients underwent surgery during VA policy. Patients who had surgery during the NVA policy were more likely to have emergency surgery and a longer operation time. However, the other baseline characteristics, surgical approach, underlying disease, extent of resection, and the need for intraoperative blood transfusion were comparable between the two groups. There was no difference between both groups regarding the 30-day readmission rate (10.3% vs. 7.8% in the NVA group; P0.05) and median LOS (4 days vs. 3 days in the NVA group; P0.05).Restricting inpatient visitors for patients undergoing colorectal surgery was not associated with increased postoperative complications and readmission rates. LOS was similar between the two groups. This strategy can be safely implemented in cases of crisis. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract: Oxidative stress, adipose tissue, and bone compartments can be disturbed in chronic diseases. Non-pharmacological strategies, such as Brazil nuts (BNs), can improve these parameters. This study evaluated the effects of BN supplementation at different concentrations on body composition, lipid profile, and peroxidation in healthy rats. Male Wistar rats were divided into three groups: control (CT), Brazil nut 5% (BN5), and Brazil nut 10% (BN10) groups. Body composition, brown adipose tissue (BAT), plasma lipid peroxidation, and lipid profile were evaluated in the three groups. The BN5 group showed an improvement in all bone parameters compared with that of the CT group (p .0001). The BN5 and BN10 groups showed reduced plasma lipid peroxidation compared with that of the CT group (p = .0009), whereas the BN10 group presented lower BAT lipid peroxidation than that of the other groups (p = .01). High-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c) levels were higher in the BN5 group than in the CT group (p = .01). Conclusively, the use of BNs in a controlled manner promoted improvement in bone parameters, HDL-c levels, and lipid peroxidation in healthy rats. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Nuts has been included in the diet because of their versatility, acceptance, and easy access. Among them, Brazil nut (BN) is considered one of the major known food sources of selenium as well as a source of fibers, unsaturated fatty acids, and phenolic compounds. Studies have shown that BN supplementation is effective in reducing oxidative stress, inflammation, lipid peroxidation, and selenium deficiency when used as a non-pharmacological strategy in experimental models of chronic diseases and in clinical trials. The present study showed that controlled administration of BN improved bone parameters, high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol levels, and lipid peroxidation in healthy rats. Therefore, BN is a promising non-pharmacological agent for the prevention of the onset of chronic non-communicable diseases.

Abstract: Despite advances in therapeutics, the progression of melanoma to metastasis still confers a poor outcome to patients. Nevertheless, there is a scarcity of biological models to understand cellular and molecular changes taking place along disease progression. Here, we characterized the transcriptome profiles of a multi-stage murine model of melanoma progression comprising a nontumorigenic melanocyte lineage (melan-a), premalignant melanocytes (4C), nonmetastatic (4C11-) and metastasis-prone (4C11+) melanoma cells. Clustering analyses have grouped the 4 cell lines according to their differentiated (melan-a and 4C11+) or undifferentiated/“mesenchymal-like” (4C and 4C11-) morphologies, suggesting dynamic gene expression patterns associated with the transition between these phenotypes. The cell plasticity observed in the murine melanoma progression model was corroborated by molecular markers described during stepwise human melanoma differentiation, as the differentiated cell lines in our model exhibit upregulation of transitory and melanocytic markers, whereas “mesenchymal-like” cells show increased expression of undifferentiated and neural crest-like markers. Sets of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected at each transition step of tumor progression, and transcriptional signatures related to malignancy, metastasis and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition were identified. Finally, DEGs were mapped to their human orthologs and evaluated in uni- and multivariate survival analyses using gene expression and clinical data of 703 drug-naïve primary melanoma patients, revealing several independent candidate prognostic markers. Altogether, these results provide novel insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the phenotypic switch taking place during melanoma progression, reveal potential drug targets and prognostic biomarkers, and corroborate the translational relevance of this unique sequential model of melanoma progression.

Abstract: Silicone elastomers must be filled/reinforced with fillers, typically fumed silica, as they are otherwise soft and/or weak and prone to tearing. Fumed silica, produced from waste chlorosilanes by combustion, is relatively expensive and involves the challenge of managing HCl. We report an investigation of alternative reinforcing agents based on waste wool fibers, a renewable resource. Chemical modification of the wool surface, by base etch, exposed free thiols that were used to chemically graft to silicone polymers using a thio-Michael addition. The reinforcement of such chemisorbed silicones was compared to physisorbed silicones or no pretreatment, except for washing, of the wool at all. Tensile tests evaluating the Young's modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break demonstrated a significant improvement of elastomer physical properties when modified with the chemisorbed silicone. The efficiency of reinforcement was found to depend both on the loading of wool in the silicone elastomer and on fiber length. More surprising, however, was the facile incorporation in silicone elastomers, and excellent reinforcement by, naked (chemically unmodified) short wool fibers in loadings up to 50 wt%. Significantly better reinforcement than fumed silica at the same loading – 10% – was provided by the use of long, naked alpaca wool fibers.

141. Technology in the Classroom: Friend or Foe

Abstract: This study explores students' perceptions of the value that technology brings to the classroom. A survey administered to undergraduate students enrolled in criminal justice courses showed that the majority of students have been taught with PowerPoint and/or blackboard. The findings further suggest that students maintain the perception that modern teaching methods (PowerPoint, videos/programs) are effective in increasing their learning. Last, there may be differences in students' perceptions based on one's academic major. Overall, students seem to have mixed reactions to technology. Hence, instructors who wish to involve students may need to rethink how and why they are using technology. (Contains 1 table and 1 footnote.)

Abstract: The Advanced Virgo detector has contributed with its data to the rapid growth of the number of detected gravitational-wave signals in the past few years, alongside the two LIGO instruments. First, during the last month of the Observation Run 2 (O2) in August 2017 (with, most notably, the compact binary mergers GW170814 and GW170817) and then during the full Observation Run 3 (O3): an 11 months data taking period, between April 2019 and March 2020, that led to the addition of about 80 events to the catalog of transient gravitational-wave sources maintained by LIGO, Virgo and KAGRA. These discoveries and the manifold exploitation of the detected waveforms require an accurate characterization of the quality of the data, such as continuous study and monitoring of the detector noise. These activities, collectively named {\em detector characterization} or {\em DetChar}, span the whole workflow of the Virgo data, from the instrument front-end to the final analysis. They are described in details in the following article, with a focus on the associated tools, the results achieved by the Virgo DetChar group during the O3 run and the main prospects for future data-taking periods with an improved detector., 86 pages, 33 figures. Abstract: We aimed to determine a safe zone of intraoperative fluid management associated with the lowest postoperative complication rates without increased acute kidney injury (AKi) risk for elective colorectal surgery patients. To date, standard practice within institutions, let alone national expectations related to fluid administration, are limited. This fact has perpetuated a quality gap. Elective colorectal surgeries between 2018 and 2020 were included. Unadjusted odds ratios (ORs) for postoperative ileus, prolonged LOS, and AKi were plotted against the rate of intraoperative RL infusion (mL/ kg/h) and total intraoperative volume. Binary logistic regression analysis, including fluid volumes as a confounder, was used to identify risk factors for postoperative complications. A total of 2900 patients were identified. Of them, 503 (17.3%) patients had ileus, 772 (26.6%) patients had prolonged LOS, and 240 (8.3%) patients had AKI. The intraoperative fluid resuscitation rate (mg/kg/h) was less impactful on postoperative ileus, LOS, and AKI than the total amount of intraoperative fluid. A total fluid administration range between 300 mL and 2.7 L was associated with the lowest complication rate. Total intraoperative RL ≥2.7 L was independently associated with a higher risk of ileus (adjusted OR 1.465; 95% confidence interval 1.154-1.858) and prolonged LOS (adjusted OR 1.300; 95% confidence interval 1.047-1.613), but not AKI. Intraoperative RL ≤300 mL was not associated with an increased risk of AKI. Total intraoperative RL ≥2.7 L was independently associated with postoperative ileus and prolonged LOS in elective colorectal surgery patients. A new potential standard for intraoperative fluids will require anesthesia case planning (complexity and duration) to ensure total fluid volume meets this new opportunity to improve care.

Abstract: El trabajo realiza un análisis en torno al proyecto de construcción del denominado Teatro-Circo que la Sociedad Española de Chivilcoy emprendió entre los años 1885 y 1888. Para ello, primero se examina el financiamiento de la obra y la valoración que desde los sectores de la elite local se tuvo sobre la misma. Se pretende demostrar que la construcción del teatro fue impulsada gracias a la cooperación establecida entre la asociación y cierto sector de la sociedad local, y cuyo objetivo en común se centró en fomentar la creación de un nuevo ámbito de sociabilidad compartida. En segundo lugar, el trabajo se concentra en el evento de inauguración del teatro analizando una serie de discursos que fueron pronunciados y a partir de los cuales se busca discriminar diferentes nociones identitarias que subyacen en los mismos y otorgaron distintas valoraciones al proyecto.

Abstract: The Heavy Photon Search (HPS) experiment is designed to search for a new vector boson $A^\prime$ in the mass range of 20 MeV/$c^2$ to 220 MeV/$c^2$ that kinetically mixes with the Standard Model photon with couplings $\epsilon^2 >10^{-10}$. In addition to the general importance of exploring light, weakly coupled physics that is difficult to probe with high-energy colliders, a prime motivation for this search is the possibility that sub-GeV thermal relics constitute dark matter, a scenario that requires a new comparably light mediator, where models with a hidden $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, a "dark", "hidden sector", or "heavy" photon, are particularly attractive. HPS searches for visible signatures of these heavy photons, taking advantage of their small coupling to electric charge to produce them via a process analogous to bremsstrahlung in a fixed target and detect their subsequent decay to $\mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-$ pairs in a compact spectrometer. In addition to searching for $\mathrm{e}^+ \mathrm{e}^-$ resonances atop large QED backgrounds, HPS has the ability to precisely measure decay lengths, resulting in unique sensitivity to dark photons, as well as other long-lived new physics. After completion of the experiment and operation of engineering runs in 2015 and 2016 at the JLab CEBAF, physics runs in 2019 and 2021 have provided datasets that are now being analyzed to search for dark photons and other new phenomena., Comment: Submitted to the Proceedings of the US Community Study on the Future of Particle Physics (Snowmass 2021)

Abstract: The dark matter interpretation of the DAMA/LIBRA annual modulation signal represents a long-standing open question in astroparticle physics. The SABRE experiment aims to test such claim, bringing the same detection technique to an unprecedented sensitivity. Based on ultra-low background NaI(Tl) scintillating crystals like DAMA, SABRE features a liquid scintillator Veto system, surrounding the main target, and it will deploy twin detectors: one in the Northern hemisphere at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS), Italy and the other in the Stawell Underground Physics Laboratory (SUPL), Australia, first laboratory of this kind in the Southern hemisphere. The first very-high-purity crystal produced by the collaboration was shipped to LNGS in 2019 for characterization. It features a potassium contamination, measured by mass spectroscopy, of the order of 4 ppb, about three times lower than DAMA/LIBRA crystals. The first phase of the SABRE experiment is a Proof-of-Principle (PoP) detector featuring one crystal and a liquid scintillator Veto, at LNGS. This contribution will present the results of the stand-alone characterization of the first SABRE high-purity crystal, as well as the status of the PoP detector, commissioned early in the summer of 2020.

Abstract: Finding unequivocal evidence of dark matter interactions in a particle detector is a major objective of physics research. Liquid argon time projection chambers offer a path to probe Weakly Interacting Massive Particles scattering cross sections on nucleus down to the so-called neutrino floor, in a mass range from few GeV's to hundredths of TeV's. Based on the successful operation of the DarkSide-50 detector at LNGS, a new and more sensitive experiment, DarkSide-20k, has been designed and is now under construction. A thorough understanding of the DarkSide-50 detector response and, therefore, of all kind of observed events, is essential for an optimal design of the new experiment. In this paper, we report on a particular set of events, which were not used for dark matter searches. Namely, standard two-pulse scintillation-ionization signals accompanied by a small amplitude third pulse, originating from single or few electrons, in a time window of less than a maximum drift time. We compare our findings to those of a recent paper of the LUX Collaboration (D.S.Akerib et al. Phys.Rev.D 102, 092004). Indeed, both experiments observe events related to photoionization of the cathode. From the measured rate of these events, we estimate for the first time the quantum efficiency of the tetraphenyl butadiene deposited on the DarkSide-50 cathode at wavelengths around 128 nm, in liquid argon. Also, both experiments observe events likely related to photoionization of impurities in the liquid. The probability of photoelectron emission per unit length turns out to be one order of magnitude smaller in DarkSide-50 than in LUX. This result, together with the much larger measured electron lifetime, coherently hints toward a lower concentration of contaminants in DarkSide-50 than in LUX., 10 pages, 8 figures, 1 table
