Fused Deposition Modeling is a suitable technique for the production of personalized solid oral dosage forms. For widespread application, it is necessary to be able to print a wide range of different formulations to address individual therapeutic needs. Due to the complexity of formulation composition (e.g., due to different compounds, excipients for enhancement of release and mechanical properties) and limited mechanical understanding, determination of suitable printing parameters is challenging. To address this challenge, we have developed a feed force tester using a Texture Analyser setup that mimics the actual printing process. Feed force data were compared to the mass of tablets printed from technical materials as well as pharmaceutical filaments containing ketoconazole at high drug loads of 20% and 40% and polyvinyl alcohol. By determining a feed force limit for the 3D printer from feed force data of several formulations printed, it was possible to specify the operable printing range, where printing is reproducible and printed mass corresponds the target mass. Based on these results, rational optimization of the printing process in terms of speed, time and temperature for different materials and formulations is possible.

This paper proposes a new approach for the optimal design of microwave absorbing composites backed by a PEC layer and characterized by frequency dependent permeability and permittivity. The reflection coefficient is expressed as a function of the difference between the absorber hyperbolic input impedance and the free space wave impedance, considering an impinging plane wave with either normal or oblique incidence angle. The impedance matching condition for the selected frequency and incidence angle is solved in terms of literal expression of the optimal thickness, which is compared with the one quarter wavelength thickness given by a new accurate expression. The optimal thickness is used for the design of microwave absorbers made by dielectric-magnetic and dielectric composite materials. The frequency spectra of the absorber input impedances and reflection coefficients are computed in the frequency range from 2 GHz up to 18 GHz and for an incidence angle ranging between 0° and 30°. The obtained results prove the validity of the literal expression of the composite optimal thickness which explicitly shows the crucial parameters for the absorbing performances, obscured in common numerical procedures.

Rete Sismica Nazionale ,National Seismic Network ,Sicilia ,Multiparametric network ,Rete multiparametrica ,Sicily - Abstract
This contribution illustrates the state of the art on the development of the multiparametric network in Sicily in the last three years. This region is wellknown for the strong earthquakes (M>6.5) which struck in historic time. However, the coverage of the seismic network developed in the last decades was not fully optimized to the need of the seismic surveillance. Since 2017, the group belonging to the National Earthquake Observatory (ONT) which operates in Sicily launched a developing plan of the preexisting seismic network in the framework of the project FISR “Sale Operative Integrate e Reti di Monitoraggio del futuro: l’INGV 2.0 (S.O.I.R.)”. Such update will end by the next years thanks to the project “GRINT Italian Research Infrastructure for Geosciences” in the framework of the “Programma Operativo Nazionale” (PON) of the Italian Ministry for the University and Research. This plan envisages both the upgrade of monitoring systems in the already existing nodes, and the integration of new nodes. The main objective is to build a multiparametric network which integrates the main seismic network, with the monitoring of other geophysical signals through the implementation of other sensors: accelerometers, geodetic GPS, radon detectors, and corner reflectors. We also illustrate the plan for the realization of a redundant network which could support the tasks of the main infrastructure in case of failure of the latter. Finally, we present some experimental urbanscale networks which in the future could support the main infrastructure., In questo contributo viene illustrato lo stato dell’arte sullo sviluppo della rete multiparametrica in Sicilia in riferimento all’ultimo triennio.

In this study, a novel computational method capable of reproducing hysteresis loops of hard magnetic materials is proposed. It is conceptually based on the classical Preisach model but has a completely different approach in the modeling of the hysteron effect. Indeed, the change in magnetization caused by a single hysteron is compared here to the change in velocity of two disk-shaped solids elastically colliding with each other rather than the effect of ideal geometrical entities giving rise to so-called Barkhausen jumps. This allowed us to obtain a simple differential formulation for the global magnetization equation with a significant improvement in terms of computational performance. A sensitivity analysis on the parameters of the proposed method has indeed shown the capability to model a large class of hysteresis loops. Moreover, the proposed method permits modeling of the temperature effect on magnetization of neodymium magnets, which is a key point for the design of electrical machines. Therefore, application of the proposed method to the hysteresis loop of a real NdFeB magnet has been proven to be very accurate and efficient for a large temperature range.

Hot-melt extrusion (HME) is the most preferred and effective method for manufacturing amorphous solid dispersions at production scale, but it consumes large amounts of samples when used for formulation development. Herein, we show a novel approach to screen the polymers by overcoming the disadvantage of conventional HME screening by using a minimum quantity of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Vacuum Compression Molding (VCM) is a fusion-based method to form solid specimens starting from powders. This study aimed to investigate the processability of VCM for the creation of amorphous formulations and to compare its results with HME-processed formulations. Mixtures of indomethacin (IND) with drug carriers (Parteck®, MXP, Soluplus®, Kollidon®, VA 64, Eudragit®, EPO) were processed using VCM and extrusion technology. Thermal characterization was performed using differential scanning calorimetry, and the solid-state was analyzed via X-ray powder diffraction. Dissolution studies in the simulated gastric fluid were performed to evaluate the drug release. Both technologies showed similar results proving the effectiveness of VCM as a screening tool for HME-based formulations.

- Abstract
In this work, novel flexible metal-free polymeric cathode electrodes are developed through a cost-effective procedure for low energy generation applications. For this purpose, a nanocomposite film made of poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) is produced through an easy process, without the use of any chemical or physical doping agent. The fabricated PVDF/GNP nanocomposite films are morphologically and chemically characterized and their applicability as polymeric electrodes is investigated through electrochemical tests.

The aim of this doctoral thesis is to present the research activity fulfilled during the Ph.D. studies. The research project of the candidate was focused on two main cores. The first core is centred in the microgrid area; in particular in islanded microgrid modelling and control. Firstly, the model was compared with experimental results collected in some facilities available at University of Genoa. Then traditional controllers for islanded microgrid are analysed and explored, proposing a new stability estimation procedure for droop controlled microgrid. Finally, a new control strategy based on Model Predictive Control (MPC) is proposed in order to collect many functionalities in just one control layer. MPC is widely used in MG environment, but just for power and energy management at tertiary level; instead here it is here proposed with an inedited use. Some experimental validations about this new methodology are obtained during a research period in Serbia and Denmark. The second core is related with synthetic inertia for wind turbine connected to the main grid, i.e. frequency support during under-frequency transients. This aspect is very important today because it represents a way to increase grid stability in low inertia power systems. The importance of this feature is shared by all the most important Transmitter System Operators (TSO) all over the world.

- Abstract
Background: Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a proinflammatory cytokine that is secreted by cells infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and it is widely recognized as a negative prognostic factor. The purpose of this study was to analyze the correlations between the olfactory scores determined by psychophysical tests and the serum levels of IL-6 in patients affected by coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) Methods: Patients underwent psychophysical olfactory assessment with Connecticut Chemosensory Clinical Research Center test and IL-6 plasma level determination within 10 days of the clinical onset of COVID-19. Results: Seventy-four COVID-19 patients were included in this study. COVID-19 staged as mild in 34 patients, moderate in 26 and severe in 14 cases. There were no significant differences in olfactory scores across the different COVID-19 severity groups. In the patient series, the median plasma level of IL-6 was 7.7 pg/mL (IQR 3.7–18.8). The concentration of IL-6 was found to be significantly correlated with the severity of COVID-19 with a directly proportional relationship. The correlation between IL-6 plasma concentrations and olfactory scores was weak (rs = 0.182) and not significant (p = 0.12). Conclusions: In COVID-19 patients, psychophysical olfactory scores did not show significant correlations with the plasma levels of a well-recognized negative prognostic factor such as IL-6. This observation casts some shadows on the positive prognostic value of olfactory dysfunctions., SCOPUS: ar.j, DecretOANoAutActif, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Low-terahertz field transmission through a graphene/dielectric laminate (GDL) is investigated by modeling each graphene/dielectric bilayer (GDB) as a homogeneous uniaxial anisotropic medium. The effective medium approximation is applied to define the transverse effective complex conductivity of the GDB, which is expressed as a function of the thickness and permittivity of the dielectric layer, and of the graphene sheet conductivity. The graphene/dielectric multilayered structure is modeled as an equivalent single layer (ESL), having the total thickness of the multilayer and characterized by the effective complex conductivity of the GDB. The model is applied to simulate two different sets of chemically doped graphene samples, characterized by measured values of the dc sheet resistance. The transmissivity, reflectivity, and shielding effectiveness of the resulting GDLs are computed in a reverberation environment up to 10 THz by applying the transfer matrix method to both the GDL and to the ESL. The comparison of the obtained results proves the high accuracy of the homogenization-based ESL model.

Shielding and absorbing screens made of tunable graphene/ dielectric laminate (GL) doped by an electrostatic field bias are designed applying simple modelling procedures in the low-gigahertz frequency range. The adaptive response of both types of screens is achieved through the control of the effective sheet resistance of the GL, consisting of a proper number of doped graphene layers separated by thin films of polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The performances of the shielding screen are predicted in the frequency range up to 1 THz, using simple approximate expressions and rigorous simulation models. The multilayer absorber is a twoperiod dielectric Salisbury screen, in which the outer lossy sheet is made of a single-layer graphene and the inner one is a GL with two electrically doped graphene layers. The reflection coefficient is minimized at each frequency through the proper setting of the electrostatic field bias. The optimal absorbing performances of the screen are predicted in the frequency range between 2 GHz and 25 GHz.
