The aim of this work is to present our new series of chemical evolution models computed for spiral and low mass galaxies of different total masses and star formation efficiencies. We analyze the results of models, in particular the evolution of the radial gradient of oxygen abundance. Furthermore, we study the role of the infall rate and of the star formation history on the variations of this radial gradient. The relations between the O/H radial gradient and other spiral galaxies characteristics as the size or the stellar mass are also shown. We find that the radial gradient is mainly a scale effect which basically does not change with the redshift (or time) if it is measured within the optical radius. Moreover, when it is measured as a function of a normalized radius, show a similar value for all galaxies masses, showing a correlation with a dispersion around an average value which is due to the differences star formation efficiencies, in agreement with the idea of an universal O/H radial gradient, Comment: 5 figures, 10 pages, proceedings of the Chemical Abundances in Gaseous Nebulae Workshop. We review the state of our chemical evolution models for spiral and low mass galaxies. We analyze the consequences of using different stellar yields, infall rate laws and star formation prescriptions in the time/redshift evolution of the radial distributions of abundances, and other quantities as star formation rate or gas densities, in the Milky Way Galaxy; In particular we will study the evolution of the Oxygen abundance radial gradient analyzing its relation with the ratio SFR/infall. We analyze the evolution of oxygen abundance radial gradients resulting from our chemical evolution models calculated with different prescriptions for the star formation rate (SFR) and for the gas infall rate, in order to assess their respective roles in shaping gradients. We also compare with cosmological simulations and confront all with recent observational datasets, in particular with abundances inferred from planetary nebulae. This paper describes the Bayesian Technique for Multi-image Analysis (BaTMAn), a novel image-segmentation technique based on Bayesian statistics that characterizes any astronomical dataset containing spatial information and performs a tessellation based on the measurements and errors provided as input. The algorithm iteratively merges spatial elements as long as they are statistically consistent with carrying the same information (i.e. identical signal within the errors). We illustrate its operation and performance with a set of test cases including both synthetic and real Integral-Field Spectroscopic data. The output segmentations adapt to the underlying spatial structure, regardless of its morphology and/or the statistical properties of the noise. The quality of the recovered signal represents an improvement with respect to the input, especially in regions with low signal-to-noise ratio. However, the algorithm may be sensitive to small-scale random fluctuations, and its performance in presence of spatial gradients is limited. Due to these effects, errors may be underestimated by as much as a factor of two. Our analysis reveals that the algorithm prioritizes conservation of all the statistically-significant information over noise reduction, and that the precise choice of the input data has a crucial impact on the results. Hence, the philosophy of BaTMAn is not to be used as a `black box' to improve the signal-to-noise ratio, but as a new approach to characterize spatially-resolved data prior to its analysis. We summarize the results obtained from our suite of chemical evolution models for spiral disks, computed for different total masses and star formation efficiencies. Once the gas, stars and star formation radial distributions are reproduced, we analyze the Oxygen abundances radial profiles for gas and stars, in addition to stellar averaged ages and global metallicity. Spiral galaxies are thought to acquire their gas through a protracted infall phase resulting in the inside-out growth of their associated discs. For field spirals, this infall occurs in the lower density environments of the cosmic web. The overall infall rate, as well as the galactocentric radius at which this infall is incorporated into the star-forming disc, plays a pivotal role in shaping the characteristics observed today. Indeed, characterising the functional form of this spatio-temporal infall in-situ is exceedingly difficult, and one is forced to constrain these forms using the present day state of galaxies with model or simulation predictions. We present the infall rates used as input to a grid of chemical evolution models spanning the mass spectrum of discs observed today. We provide a systematic comparison with alternate analytical infall schemes in the literature, including a first comparison with cosmological simulations. ID11 is an actively star forming extremely compact galaxy and Ly alpha emitter at z=3.117 that is gravitationally magnified by a factor of ~17 by the cluster of galaxies Hubble Frontier Fields AS1063. Its observed properties resemble those of low luminosity HII galaxies or Giant HII regions like 30-Doradus in the LMC. Using the tight correlation correlation between the Balmer-line luminosities and the width of the emission lines (typically L(Hbeta)-sigma(Hbeta)) valid for HII galaxies and Giant HII regions to estimate its total luminosity, we are able to measure the lensing amplification of ID11. We obtain an amplification of 23 +- 11 similar within errors to the value of ~17 estimated or predicted by the best lensing models of the massive cluster Abell S1063. We also compiled from the literature luminosities and velocity dispersions for a set of lensed compact starforming regions. There is more scatter in the L-sigma correlation for these lensed systems but on the whole the results tend to support the lensing models estimates of the magnification. Our result indicates that the amplification can be independently measured using the L-sigma relation in lensed Giant HII regions or HII galaxies. It also supports the suggestion, even if lensing model dependent, that the L-sigma relation is valid for low luminosity high-z objects. The search of extragalactic regions with conspicuous presence of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars outside the Local Group is challenging task due to the difficulties in detecting their faint spectral features. In this exploratory work, we develop a methodology to perform an automated search of WR signatures through a pixel-by-pixel analysis of integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data belonging to the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area survey, CALIFA. This technique allowed us to build the first catalogue of Wolf-Rayet rich regions with spatially-resolved information, allowing to study the properties of these complexes in a 2D context. The detection technique is based on the identification of the blue WR bump (around He II 4686 {\AA}, mainly associated to nitrogen-rich WR stars, WN) and the red WR bump (around C IV 5808 {\AA} and associated to carbon-rich WR stars, WC) using a pixel-by-pixel analysis. We identified 44 WR-rich regions with blue bumps distributed in 25 galaxies of a total of 558. The red WR bump was identified only in 5 of those regions. We found that the majority of the galaxies hosting WR populations in our sample are involved in some kind of interaction process. Half of the host galaxies share some properties with gamma-ray burst (GRB) hosts where WR stars, as potential candidates to being the progenitors of GRBs, are found. We also compared the WR properties derived from the CALIFA data with stellar population synthesis models, and confirm that simple star models are generally not able to reproduce the observations. We conclude that other effects, such as the binary star channel (which could extend the WR phase up to 10 Myr), fast rotation or other physical processes that causes the loss of observed Lyman continuum photons, are very likely affecting the derived WR properties, and hence should be considered when modelling the evolution of massive stars., Comment: 33 pages, accepted for publication in A&A

In this work, we investigate the contribution of dust scattering to the diffuse H-alpha emission observed in nearby galaxies. As initial conditions for the spatial distribution of HII regions, gas, and dust, we take three Milky Way-like galaxies from state-of-the-art cosmological hydrodynamical simulations that implement different prescriptions for star formation, feedback, and chemical enrichment. Radiative transfer has been solved a posteriori, using the publicly-available Monte Carlo code Sunrise to take into account dust absorption and scattering of the H-alpha photons, originating exclusively from the HII regions. No contribution from recombinations in the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) component is explicitly or implicitly included in our model. Our main result is that the flux arising from scattered light is of the order of 1-2 per cent of the H-alpha flux coming directly from the HII regions. We measured the gas abundance profiles in a sample of 122 face-on spiral galaxies observed by the CALIFA survey and included all spaxels whose line emission was consistent with star formation. This type of analysis allowed us to improve the statistics with respect to previous studies, and to properly estimate the oxygen distribution across the entire disc to a distance of up to 3-4 disc effective radii (r$_e$). We confirm the results obtained from classical HII region analysis. In addition to the general negative gradient, an outer flattening can be observed in the oxygen abundance radial profile. An inner drop is also found in some cases. There is a common abundance gradient between 0.5 and 2.0 r$_e$ of $\alpha_{O/H} = -\,0.075\,\rm{dex}/r_e$ with a scatter of $\sigma = 0.016\,\rm{dex}/r_e$ when normalising the distances to the disc effective radius. By performing a set of Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, we determined that this slope is independent of other galaxy properties, such as morphology, absolute magnitude, and the presence or absence of bars. In particular, barred galaxies do not seem to display shallower gradients, as predicted by numerical simulations. Interestingly, we find that most of the galaxies in the sample with reliable oxygen abundance values beyond $\sim 2$ effective radii (57 galaxies) present a flattening of the abundance gradient in these outer regions. This flattening is not associated with any morphological feature, which suggests that it is a common property of disc galaxies. Finally, we detect a drop or truncation of the abundance in the inner regions of 27 galaxies in the sample; this is only visible for the most massive galaxies., Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A 2015 December 12
