101. SUPERALLOWED BETA DECAY STUDIES AT TRIUMF -- NUCLEAR STRUCTURE AND FUNDAMENTAL SYMMETRIES.

Abstract

Precision measurement of the β-decay half-life, Q-value, and branching ratio between nuclear analog states of Jπ = 0+ and T = 1 can provide critical and fundamental tests of the Standard Model's description of electroweak interactions. A program has been initiated at TRIUMF-ISAC to measure the ft values of these superallowed beta transitions. Two Tz = 0, A > 60 cases, 74Rb and 62Ga, are presented. These are particularly relevant because they can provide critical tests of the calculated nuclear structure and isospin-symmetry breaking corrections that are predicted to be larger for heavier nuclei, and because they demonstrate the advance in the experimental precision on ft at TRIUMF-ISAC from 0.26% for 74Rb in 2002 to 0.05% for 62Ga in 2006. The high precision world data on experimental ft and corrected Ft values are discussed and shown to be consistent with CVC at the 10-4 level, yielding an average Ft = 3073.70(74) s. This Ft leads to Vud = 0.9737(4) for the up-down element of the Standard Model's CKM matrix. With this value and the Particle Data Group's 2006 values for Vus and Vub, the unitarity condition for the CKM matrix is met. Additional measurements and calculations are needed, however, to reduce the uncertainties in that evaluation. 110. The usefulness of an assessment of emotional involvement of HIV-positive mothers and their infants

Abstract

Introduction: A positive mother-infant relationship is crucial for optimal child development: however, many factors may interfere with the development of a such a relationship. One group at risk for compromised mother-infant interactions is women with HIV infection. The purposes of this study were (a) to examine the usefulness of the Attachment During Stress scale (ADS) for measuring the emotional involvement of HIV-positive mothers with their infants during a clinic visit and (b) to explore the effects of maternal health status, age, parity, and educational level on mother-infant involvement. Method: A descriptive, longitudinal study was conducted with 57 primarily African American HIV-positive mothers and their infants who were patients at 1 of 2 regional referral center. The ADS was completed during the child's physical examination at 3, 6, and 12 months of age, and mothers completed questionnaires during these visits. Results: Maternal age, education level, health status, and parity were not related to maternal emotional involvement. However, the emotional involvement of the mother and infant were correlated (r = 0.73, P < .001). Discussion: These findings suggest that the ADS may be a useful screening tool to supplement the nurse's clinical judgment in a pediatric outpatient setting. The ADS provides some useful information about the emotional involvement of the mother and infant, although it does not provide a comprehensive assessment of their relationship.

Abstract

AbstractElemental profiles of onion maggots reared on a dried carrot based medium were monitored by X-ray energy spectrometry. Adult insects had higher levels of S, Fe, Cu, and Zn and lower levels of Cl, K, Br, and Sr than were apparently present in the medium. Addition of Rb to the larval diet resulted in a higher than normal concentration of Rb in the newly-emerged adults. This concentration of Rb decreased to ambient levels after 10 days. When Y was added to the rearing medium, it was not incorporated into the adult flies. Pupae from the Ga-supplemented diet failed to mature. The elemental profiles of male and female adults from the Rb- and Y-rearings differed significantly from the control rearings and each other. X-ray energy spectrometry shows much promise in helping define and monitor mineral requirements in insects.

115. The Variation of Trace Element Concentrations in Single Human Head Hairs

Abstract

Hair from the human body is frequently encountered in the examination of crime-scene physical evidence. Study of metallic components by neutron activation analysis (NAA) and application of the results of such studies in forensic work, have been made difficult by the complexity of the hair system and its attendant surface contamination. As was noted in 1967 [1], “virtually everyone working with hair by this method [NAA] uses a different type of sampling, and a different method of cleaning the hair, and nobody yet really knows enough about the basic chemistry, morphology and behaviour of the hair shaft to be able to assess reliably the significance of the results.” The literature [2,3] contains both optimistic and pessimistic prognoses of the possibility of establishing whether or not a hair came from the head of a given individual.

Abstract

Phaseolus vulgaris plants, 3, 8, 11, and 13 days old, were inoculated with 0, 2,000, 4,000, or 8,000 second-stage Meloidogyne incognita larvae and maintained under controlled conditions. The photosynthetic rate and the shoot and root concentration of K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn were determined by destructive assay at 1-27-day intervals and by nondestructive assay of leaves, stems, and roots at 27 or 28 days after inoculation. In the destructive assay, the concentration of the elements in the plant tissues did not change until 1 week after inoculation. Thereafter, the trend was mostly decreasing for shoot K and Fe and increasing in the root, whereas Ca had the opposite trend in the shoots. Manganese, Cu, and Fe showed variable trends. Generally, the concentration of K and Mn increased, whereas Ca and Fe decreased, with duration of infection in all treatments. Zinc and Cu decreased in the highest nematode treatments. The overall elemental content generally decreased with level of infection from 1 week after inoculation. Photosynthetic rate based on shoot K concentration significantly decreased with level of infection. In most of the nondestructive assays, the concentrations of shoot K, Zn, and Mn decreased, whereas Ca increased with increasing nematode treatment. One of the first effects of the nematode on host physiology appears to be a change in concentration of nutrient elements in the host plant.

Total beta-decay energies were measured by a beta-gamma coincidence method for /sup 76/Rb, /sup 78/Rb, /sup 118/Cs, /sup 120/Cs and /sup 122/Cs. The resulting Q-values and masses together with experimental data from the literature are compared with mass formulae, with particular emphasis on Kr and Rb isotopes in the N=Z region.

Abstract

The gas-jet recoil transport technique has been used to transport products from spallation and fission reactions from a target chamber to a shielded location for nuclear spectroscopic studies. These involve X- beta - gamma coincidence measurements and (shortly) time- of-flight mass spectroscopy. It has been deduced that the proton beam at present intensities has no appreciable effect on the ability of ethylene and other cluster-producing gases to transport radioactivity. Preliminary results will be presented for shortlived fission products from uranium, and for spallation products of iodine and argon. The latter were obtained from the bombardment of gas and aerosol targets mixed with the transporting gas in the target chamber, which appears to be a generally useful technique.

Abstract

The new nuclide /sub 37//sup 74/Rb has been observed at the ISOLDE-2 facility using a novel metal powder target operated at 2200 degrees C, and a Delta E-E beta telescope. Calculations support the conclusion that the observed half-life of 59+or-2 msec is superallowed beta decay from a T=1, I=0/sup +/ ground state in this heaviest Z=N nuclide known. (12 refs).
