104. Low degree motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of the three-dimensional projective space

Abstract

Levine has constructed motivic analogues of virtual fundamental classes, living in cohomology of Witt sheaves. We use this to define motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants $\tilde{I}_n$ for $\mathbb{P}^3$ over $\mathbb{R}$. We show that for $n$ odd, $\tilde{I}_n = 0$ and we compute $\tilde{I}_2 = 10, \tilde{I}_4 = 25$ and $\tilde{I}_6 = -50$. We then make a conjecture about the general case, which could be a motivic analogue of a classical theorem of Maulik-Nekrasov-Okounkov-Pandharipande. Abstract

We identify rare and visually distinctive galaxy populations by searching for structure within the learned representations of pretrained models. We show that these representations arrange galaxies by appearance in patterns beyond those needed to predict the pretraining labels. Abstract

Controlling the bandstructure of Dirac materials is of wide interest in current research but has remained an outstanding challenge for systems such as monolayer graphene. In contrast, Bernal bilayer graphene (BLG) offers a highly flexible platform for tuning the bandstructure, featuring two distinct regimes. In one regime, which is well established and widely used, a tunable bandgap is induced by a large enough transverse displacement field. Another is a gapless metallic band occurring near charge neutrality and at not too strong fields, featuring rich 'fine structure' consisting of four linearly-dispersing Dirac cones with opposite chiralities in each valley and van Hove singularities. Even though BLG was extensively studied experimentally in the last two decades, the evidence of this exotic bandstructure is still elusive, likely due to insufficient energy resolution. Here, rather than probing the bandstructure by direct spectroscopy, we use Landau levels as markers of the energy dispersion and carefully analyze the Landau level spectrum in a regime where the cyclotron orbits of electrons or holes in momentum space are small enough to resolve the distinct mini Dirac cones. We identify the presence of four distinct Dirac cones and map out complex topological transitions induced by electric displacement field. These findings introduce a valuable addition to the toolkit for graphene electronics.

Abstract

At present, the field of astronomical machine learning lacks widely-used benchmarking datasets; most research employs custom-made datasets which are often not publicly released, making comparisons between models difficult. In this paper we present CRUMB, a publicly-available image dataset of Fanaroff-Riley galaxies constructed from four "parent" datasets extant in the literature. In addition to providing the largest image dataset of these galaxies, CRUMB uses a two-tier labelling system: a "basic" label for classification and a "complete" label which provides the original class labels used in the four parent datasets, allowing for disagreements in an image's class between different datasets to be preserved and selective access to sources from any desired combination of the parent datasets., Comment: Accepted in Machine Learning and the Physical Sciences Workshop at NeurIPS 2023; 6 pages, 1 figure, 1 table

Abstract

We perform the renormalization group improved collinear resummation of the photon-gluon impact factors. We construct the resummed cross section for virtual photon-photon ($\gamma^*\gamma^*$) scattering which incorporates the impact factors and BFKL gluon Green's function up to the next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy in energy. The impact factors include important kinematical effects which are responsible for the most singular poles in Mellin space at next-to-leading order. Further conditions on the resummed cross section are obtained by requiring the consistency with the collinear limits. Our analysis is consistent with previous impact factor calculations at NLO, apart from a new term proportional to $C_F$ that we find for the longitudinal polarization. Finally, we use the resummed cross section to compare with the LEP data on the $\gamma^*\gamma^*$ cross section and with previous calculations. The resummed result is lower than the leading logarithmic approximation but higher than the pure next-to-leading one, and is consistent with the experimental data., Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We consider the problem of learning to play a repeated contextual game with unknown reward and unknown constraints functions. Such games arise in applications where each agent's action needs to belong to a feasible set, but the feasible set is a priori unknown. For example, in constrained multi-agent reinforcement learning, the constraints on the agents' policies are a function of the unknown dynamics and hence, are themselves unknown. Under kernel-based regularity assumptions on the unknown functions, we develop a no-regret, no-violation approach which exploits similarities among different reward and constraint outcomes. The no-violation property ensures that the time-averaged sum of constraint violations converges to zero as the game is repeated. We show that our algorithm, referred to as c.z.AdaNormalGP, obtains kernel-dependent regret bounds and that the cumulative constraint violations have sublinear kernel-dependent upper bounds. In addition we introduce the notion of constrained contextual coarse correlated equilibria (c.z.CCE) and show that $\epsilon$-c.z.CCEs can be approached whenever players' follow a no-regret no-violation strategy. Finally, we experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of c.z.AdaNormalGP on an instance of multi-agent reinforcement learning.

110. Probing self-interacting sterile neutrino dark matter with the diffuse supernova neutrino background

Abstract

The neutrinos in the diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB) travel over cosmological distances and this provides them with an excellent opportunity to interact with dark relics. We show that a cosmologically-significant relic population of keV-mass sterile neutrinos with strong self-interactions could imprint their presence in the DSNB. The signatures of the self-interactions would be ``dips" in the otherwise smooth DSNB spectrum. Upcoming large-scale neutrino detectors, for example Hyper-Kamiokande, have a good chance of detecting the DSNB and these dips. If no dips are detected, this method serves as an independent constraint on the sterile neutrino self-interaction strength and mixing with active neutrinos. We show that relic sterile neutrino parameters that evade X-ray and structure bounds may nevertheless be testable by future detectors like TRISTAN, but may also produce dips in the DSNB which could be detectable. Such a detection would suggest the existence of a cosmologically-significant, strongly self-interacting sterile neutrino background, likely embedded in a richer dark sector., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

Engrailed-1 (EN1) is a critical homeodomain transcription factor (TF) required for neuronal survival, and EN1 expression has been shown to promote aggressive forms of triple negative breast cancer. Here, it is reported that EN1 is aberrantly expressed in a subset of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) patients with poor outcomes. EN1 predominantly repressed its target genes through direct binding to gene enhancers and promoters, implicating roles in the activation of MAPK pathways and the acquisition of mesenchymal cell properties. Gain- and loss-of-function experiments demonstrated that EN1 promoted PDA transformation and metastasis in vitro and in vivo. The findings nominate the targeting of EN1 and downstream pathways in aggressive PDA.

114. The Shaping Healthy Choices Program: Improving the impact through community partnerships

Abstract

The high prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity demonstrates the need for effective intervention strategies. The Shaping Healthy Choices Program (SHCP) is a school-based intervention that promotes nutrition and physical education, develops family and community partnerships, and incorporates foods available on the school campus, with the goal of achieving sustainable student health outcomes. Partnerships developed through implementation of the SHCP were analyzed using the RE-AIM: Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework to assess the potential for adoption, scaling and sustainability of the program. The RE-AIM framework is a comprehensive approach to evaluating public health interventions through reach, effectiveness, adoption, implementation and maintenance. Partners of the SHCP include site staff (teachers, administration and health professionals), parents, peer teachers, and state and federal agencies, such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed), which funds CalFresh Healthy Living, University of California (CFHL, UC), and UC Cooperative Extension. This analysis highlights how partnerships developed and sustained with the SHCP may serve as a model for other programs to expand, while also enabling programs to remain responsive to the diverse challenges and needs of local community partners.
