A high-frequency survey of the Galactic plane for radio pulsars is in progress, using the multibeam receiver on the 64-m Parkes radiotelescope. We describe the survey motivations, the observing plan and the inital results. The survey is discovering many pulsars, more than 500 so far. Eight of the new pulsars are binary, one with a massive companion. At least eight are young, with characteristic ages of less than 100 kyr. We are undertaking a high-frequency survey of the Galactic plane for radio pulsars, using the 13-element multibeam receiver on the 64-m Parkes radio telescope. We describe briefly the survey system and some of the initial results. PSR J1811-1736, one of the first pulsars discovered with this system, has a rotation period of 104 ms. Subsequent timing observations using the 76-m radio telescope at Jodrell Bank show that it is in an 18.8-day, highly-eccentric binary orbit. We have measured the rate of advance of periastron which indicates a total system mass of 2.6 +- 0.9 Msun, and the minimum companion mass is about 0.7 Msun. This, the high orbital eccentricity and the recycled nature of the pulsar suggests that this system is composed of two neutron stars, only the fourth or fifth such system known in the disk of the Galaxy., Comment: 6 pages, 3 embedded EPS figures, to be published in MNRAS

The Parkes multibeam pulsar survey began in 1997 and is now about 50% complete. It has discovered more than 400 new pulsars so far, including a number of young, high magnetic field, and relativistic binary pulsars. Measurement of accurate positions, pulse periods and period derivatives is an essential follow-up to any pulsar survey. The procedures being used to obtain timing parameters for the pulsars discovered in the Parkes multibeam pulsar survey are described. Completed solutions have been obtained so far for about 80 pulsars. They show that the survey is preferentially finding pulsars with higher than average surface dipole magnetic fields. Since the discovery of the original millisecond pulsar, no pulsars with a shorter spin period (P<1.56 ms) were found. However, according to the most popular equations of state, the theoretical limiting spin period of a neutron star can be much shorter. On the other hand, most of the large scale searches for millisecond pulsars carried out so far were strongly biased against the detection of ultrashort periodicities. The Parkes multibeam pulsar survey uses a 13-element receiver operating at a wavelength of 20 cm to survey the inner Galactic plane with remarkable sensitivity. To date we have collected and analyzed data from 45% of the survey region (|b| < 5 deg.; 260 deg. < l < 50 deg.), and have discovered 440 pulsars, in addition to re-detecting 190 previously known ones. The Parkes multibeam pulsar survey is a high-frequency, fast-sampled survey of the Galactic Plane, expected to discover at least 500 new pulsars. To date, over 200 pulsars have been found, including several young pulsars and at least one with a very high magnetic field. Seven of the new stars are in binary systems; this number includes one probable double-neutron-star system, and one pulsar with an extremely massive companion., Comment: 6 pages. Using the Parkes radio telescope, we have searched for pulsed radio emission from the recently discovered X-ray pulsars AX J1811.5-1926 and PSR J0537-6910 in the supernova remnants G11.2-0.3 and N157B, respectively. We detected no significant pulsed radio emission from these pulsars and have set an upper limit of 0.07 mJy on the 1374 MHz flux from AX J1811.5-1926 and upper limits of 0.18 mJy and 0.06 mJy for the flux from PSR J0537-6910 at 660 MHz and 1374 MHz, respectively. Assuming a power law radio spectral index of 2, these flux limits correspond to luminosity limits at 400 MHz of 20 mJy kpc^2 for AX J1811.5-1926 and 1100 mJy kpc^2 for PSR J0537-6910. Our luminosity limit for AX J1811.5-1926 is lower than the observed luminosities of other young radio pulsars. The upper limit on the luminosity for PSR J0537-6910 in N157B is not significantly constraining due to the large distance to the pulsar. We have also searched for giant radio pulses from both pulsars and have found no convincing candidates., Comment: 4 pages, LaTex (memsait, epsf). We report the detection of the radio pulsar counterpart to the 69 ms X-ray pulsar discovered near the supernova remnant RCW 103 (G332.4-0.4). Our detection confirms that the pulsations arise from a rotation-powered neutron star, which we name PSR J1617-5055. The observed barycentric period derivative confirms that the pulsar has a characteristic age of only 8 kyr, the sixth smallest of all known pulsars. The unusual apparent youth of the pulsar and its proximity to a young remnant requires that an association be considered. Although the respective ages and distances are consistent within substantial uncertainties, the large inferred pulsar transverse velocity is difficult to explain given the observed pulsar velocity distribution, the absence of evidence for a pulsar wind nebula, and the symmetry of the remnant. Rather, we argue that the objects are likely superposed on the sky; this is reasonable given the complex area. Without an association, the question of where is the supernova remnant left behind following the birth of PSR J1617-5055 remains open. We also discuss a possible association between PSR J1617-5055 and the gamma-ray source 2CG 333+01. Known millisecond pulsars have periods longer than 1.558 ms. Recycled in binary systems, neutron stars can attain very short spin periods. In this paper we investigate the expected properties of the millisecond pulsar distribution by simulating synthetic populations under different assumptions for the neutron star equation of state and decay of the magnetic field. We describe a data format currently in use amongst European institutions for exchanging and archiving pulsar data. The format is designed to be as flexible as possible with regard to present and future compatibility with different operating systems. One application of the common format is simultaneous multi-frequency observations of single pulses. A data archive containing over 2500 pulse profiles stored in this format is now available via the Internet (see http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/pulsar/data), together with a small suite of computer programs that can read, write and display the data., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We report the discovery and follow-up timing observations of the 63 ms radio pulsar, PSR J1105-6107. The pulsar is young, having a characteristic age of only 63 kyr and, from its dispersion measure, is estimated to be at a distance of ~7 kpc from the Sun. We consider its possible association with the nearby supernova remnant G290.1-0.8 (MSH 11-61A); an association requires that the pulsar's proper motion be ~22 mas/yr (corresponding to ~650 km/s for a distance of 7 kpc) directed away from the remnant center, assuming that the characteristic age is the true age. The pulsar's spin-down luminosity, 2.5 x 10^{36} erg/s, is in the top 1% of all known pulsar spin-down luminosities. Given its estimated distance, PSR J1105-6107 is therefore likely to be observable at high energies. We report on the discovery and follow-up timing observations of a 63-ms radio pulsar, PSR J1105-6107. We show that the pulsar is young, having a characteristic age of only 63kyr. We consider its possible association with the nearby remnant G290.1-0.8 (MSH 11-61A) but uncertainties in the distances and ages preclude a firm conclusion.

As part of its ongoing survey of the high-energy gamma-ray sky, the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory has searched for emission from spin-powered pulsars, five of which have now been detected in the energy range 30 MeV less than or = E less than or = 20 GeV. A systematic study of the all-sky survey has found no additional pulsed gamma-ray sources. The pulsar detections, coupled with the upper limits on pulsed gamma radiation from other radio pulsars, indicate that the simplest models of gamma-ray pulsars are incomplete.

The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory has detected a high-energy gamma-ray source at a position coincident with that of the radio pulsar PSR 1055-52. Analysis of the EGRET data at the radio pulsar period of 197 ms has revealed pulsed gamma-radiation at energies above 300 MeV, making PSR 1055-52 the fifth detected high-energy gamma-ray pulsar. The pulsed radiation from PSR 1055-52 has a very hard photon spectral index of -1.18 +/- 0.16 and a high efficiency for converting its rotational energy into gamma-rays. No unpulsed emission was observed.

Gamma radiation above 100 MeV in energy has been detected from the radio pulsar PSR1706-44. The gamma emission forms a single broad peak within the pulsar period of 102 ms, in contrast to the two narrow peaks seen in the other three known high-energy gamma-ray pulsars. The emission mechanism in all cases is probably the same, the differences arising from the geometry of the magnetic and rotation axes and the line of sight. Gamma-ray emission accounts for as much as 1 percent of the total neutron star spindown energy in these pulsars, much more than emerges at optical or radio frequencies. Thus, study of this emission is important in understanding pulsar emission and evolution.

Results of an HF survey designed to detect young, distant, and short-period pulsars are presented. The survey detected a total of 100 pulsars, 46 of which were previously unknown. The periods of the newly discovered pulsars range between 47 ms and 2.5 ms. One of the new discoveries, PSR 1259-63, is a member of a long-period binary system. At least three of the pulsars have ages less than 30,000 yr, bringing the total number of such pulsars to 12. The majority of the new discoveries are distant objects with high dispersion measures, which are difficult to detect at low frequencies. This demonstrates that the survey has reduced the severe selection effects of pulse scattering, high Galactic background temperature, and dispersion broadening, which hamper the detection of such pulsars at low radio frequencies. The pulsar distribution in the southern Galaxy is found to extend much further from the Galactic center than that in the north, probably due to two prominent spiral arms in the southern Galaxy.

A pulsar with a period of 5.75 ms and a dispersion measure of 25/cu cm pc has been found in the direction of 47 Tucanae. Despite its probable origin as a member of a binary system, timing measurements show that the pulsar is now single. The observed dispersion measure is consistent with the pulsar lying outside the Galactic electron layer and within 47 Tucanae, but it is very different from the value of 67/cu cm pc for the pulsars that were reported recently as being in this globular cluster. It is suggested that the latter pulsars probably do not in fact lie within 47 Tucanae.
