107. Combined radiocarbon and CO2 flux measurements used to determine in situ chlorinated solvent mineralization rate.

Abstract

A series of combined measurements was made at the Naval Air Station North Island (NASNI) Installation Restoration Site 5, Unit 2 during July and August 2013. Combined measurements included CO2 respiration rate, CO2 radiocarbon content to estimate chlorinated hydrocarbon (CH) mineralization and a zone of influence (ZOI) model. CO2 was collected continuously over 2 two-week periods by recirculating monitoring well headspace gas through NaOH traps. A series of 12 wells in the main CH plume zone and a background well with no known historical contamination were sampled. The background well CO2 was used to determine radiocarbon content derived from respired natural organic matter. A two end-member mixing model was then used to determine the amount of CH-derived carbon present in the CO2 collected from plume region wells. The ZOI model provided an estimate for the soil volume sampled at each well. CH mineralization rates were highest upgradient and at the plume fringe for areas of high historical contamination and ranged from 0.02 to 5.6 mg CH carbon per day. Using the ZOI model volume estimates, CH–carbon removal ranged from 0.2 to 32 mg CH–carbon m−3 per day. Because the rate estimates were based on a limited sampling (temporally), they were not further extrapolated to long-term contaminant degradation estimates. However, if the site manager or regulators required them, estimates – subject to long-term variability uncertainties – could be made using volume and rate data determined over short timescales. A more comprehensive seasonal sampling is needed to constrain long-term remediation models for the entire impacted area and identify environmental conditions related to more rapid turnover times amongst the wells. Abstract

Due to market competition and continuous pressure on businesses, there is always a need to adopt innovative tools and techniques, to reduce waste and concentrate on value adding activities. Consequently, the integration of lean tools and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems currently seem to be in high demand for both manufacturing and service organisations. However, the implementation of lean tools and ERP systems can lead to undesirable outcomes if implemented incorrectly and these can adversely affect improvements in the process. This research investigates the critical success factors (CSFs) involved in implementing lean tools and ERP systems with the aim of understanding how these CSFs have changed over time and, so as consider possible future directions. That will enable us to indicate which CSFs have already been addressed as well as indicate which areas may require further research. To achieve this aim, a comprehensive review of the published literature was conducted to identify the CSFs and achieve a depth of understanding of the various CSFs already identified by other researchers. The findings of this work support both manufacturing and service organisations seeking to implement lean tools and ERP systems by determining the CSFs of both ERP systems and lean tools which can be a valuable step toward enhancing chances of implementation of these techniques successfully. Moreover, decision makers will be able to formulate better strategies to enhance lean tools and ERP systems implementation, as well as to identify which elements of the implementation process most emphasis should be placed upon. Abstract

Blood samples were taken from the ventral coccygeal vein of 15 El Hierro giant lizards (Gallotia simonyi) (seven females and eight males), six La Gomera giant lizards (Gallotia bravoana) (four males and two females) and four Tenerife giant lizards (Gallotia intermedia) (two males and two females), and 31 blood parameters were measured. Among the haematological parameters there were significant differences between the three species in heterophils, azurophils and lymphocytes, but no significant differences in red blood cell count, white blood cell count, haemoglobin, packed-cell volume, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. In terms of blood chemistry there were significant differences between the three species in cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, sodium, chloride, urea, uric acid, total proteins, prealbumin, albumin and gamma globulins, but no significant differences in calcium, potassium, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatine kinase, bile acids, alpha-1 and alpha-2 globulins and beta globulins. 150. Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer Parameters through Infiltration Experiments—BEST

Abstract

Studying soil hydrological processes requires the determination of soil hydraulic parameters whose assessment using traditional methods is expensive and time‐consuming. A specific method, Beerkan estimation of soil transfer parameters referred to as BEST was developed to facilitate the determination of both the water retention curve, θ(h), and the hydraulic conductivity curve, K(θ), defined by their shape and scale parameters. BEST estimates shape parameters from particle‐size distribution analysis and scale parameters from infiltration experiments at null pressure head. Saturated water content is measured directly at the end of infiltration. Hydraulic conductivity and water pressure scale parameters are calculated from the steady‐state infiltration rate and prior estimation of sorptivity (S) This is provided by fitting transient infiltration data on the classical two‐term equations with values from zero to a maximum corresponding to null hydraulic conductivity and using a data subset for which the two‐term infiltration equations are verified as valid. BEST was compared with other fitting methods to estimate sorptivity and hydraulic conductivity from infiltration modeling data on the basis of the same infiltration equations for three contrasting soils: agricultural soil, sandy soil, and a coarser fluvioglacial deposit. The other methods failed sometimes to model accurately experimental data and to provide values in agreement with physical principles of water infiltration (negative values for hydraulic conductivity, too high steady‐state infiltration rate). None of these anomalies was encountered when modeling cumulative infiltration with BEST. BEST appears to be a promising, easy, robust, and inexpensive way of characterizing the hydraulic behavior of soil.
