- Abstract
In an assessment of how Arctic sea ice cover could be remediated in a warming world, we simulated the injection of SO2 into the Arctic stratosphere making annual adjustments to injection rates. We treated one climate model realization as a surrogate “real world” with imperfect “observations” and no rerunning or reference to control simulations. SO2 injection rates were proposed using a novel model predictive control regime which incorporated a second simpler climate model to forecast “optimal” decision pathways. Commencing the simulation in 2018, Arctic sea ice cover was remediated by 2043 and maintained until solar geoengineering was terminated. We found quantifying climate side effects problematic because internal climate variability hampered detection of regional climate changes beyond the Arctic. Nevertheless, through decision maker learning and the accumulation of at least 10 years time series data exploited through an annual review cycle, uncertainties in observations and forcings were successfully managed.

The discovery of almost 2000 exoplanets has revealed an unexpectedly diverse planet population. Observations to date have shown that our Solar System is certainly not representative of the general population of planets in our Milky Way. The key science questions that urgently need addressing are therefore: What are exoplanets made of? Why are planets as they are? What causes the exceptional diversity observed as compared to the Solar System? EChO (Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory) has been designed as a dedicated survey mission for transit and eclipse spectroscopy capable of observing a large and diverse planet sample within its four-year mission lifetime. EChO can target the atmospheres of super-Earths, Neptune-like, and Jupiter-like planets, in the very hot to temperate zones (planet temperatures of 300K-3000K) of F to M-type host stars. Over the next ten years, several new ground- and space-based transit surveys will come on-line (e.g. NGTS, CHEOPS, TESS, PLATO), which will specifically focus on finding bright, nearby systems. The current rapid rate of discovery would allow the target list to be further optimised in the years prior to EChO's launch and enable the atmospheric characterisation of hundreds of planets. Placing the satellite at L2 provides a cold and stable thermal environment, as well as a large field of regard to allow efficient time-critical observation of targets randomly distributed over the sky. A 1m class telescope is sufficiently large to achieve the necessary spectro-photometric precision. The spectral coverage (0.5-11 micron, goal 16 micron) and SNR to be achieved by EChO, thanks to its high stability and dedicated design, would enable a very accurate measurement of the atmospheric composition and structure of hundreds of exoplanets., Comment: 50 pages, 30 figures. This paper aims to discover whether the predictive accuracy of a new applicant scoring model for a credit card can be improved by estimating separate scoring models for applicants who are predicted to have high or low usage of the card. Two models are estimated. First we estimate a model to explain the desired usage of a card, and second we estimate separately two further scoring models, one for those applicants whose usage is predicted to be high, and one for those for whom it is predicted to be low. The desired usage model is a two-stage Heckman model to take into account the fact that the observed usage of accepted applicants is constrained by their credit limit. Thus a model of the determinants of the credit limit, and one of usage, are both estimated using Heckman's ML estimator. We find a large number of variables to be correlated with desired usage. We also find that the two stage scoring methodology gives only very marginal improvements over a single stage scoring model, that we are able to predict a greater percentage of bad payers for low users than for high users and a greater percentage of good payers for high users than for low users. Keywords: credit scoring; Heckman; selection model

- Abstract
Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting movement and cognition, definitively diagnosed only at autopsy. Here, we conduct a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in CBD cases (n=152) and 3,311 controls, and 67 CBD cases and 439 controls in a replication stage. Associations with meta-analysis were 17q21 at MAPT (P=1.42 × 10(-12)), 8p12 at lnc-KIF13B-1, a long non-coding RNA (rs643472; P=3.41 × 10(-8)), and 2p22 at SOS1 (rs963731; P=1.76 × 10(-7)). Testing for association of CBD with top progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) GWAS single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified associations at MOBP (3p22; rs1768208; P=2.07 × 10(-7)) and MAPT H1c (17q21; rs242557; P=7.91 × 10(-6)). We previously reported SNP/transcript level associations with rs8070723/MAPT, rs242557/MAPT, and rs1768208/MOBP and herein identified association with rs963731/SOS1. We identify new CBD susceptibility loci and show that CBD and PSP share a genetic risk factor other than MAPT at 3p22 MOBP (myelin-associated oligodendrocyte basic protein).

- Abstract
How does the cerebellum, the brain's largest sensorimotor structure, contribute to complex behaviors essential to survival? While we know much about the role of limbic and closely associated brainstem structures in relation to a variety of emotional, sensory, or motivational stimuli, we know very little about how these circuits interact with the cerebellum to generate appropriate patterns of behavioral response. Here we focus on evidence suggesting that the olivo-cerebellar system may link to survival networks via interactions with the midbrain periaqueductal gray, a structure with a well known role in expression of survival responses. As a result of this interaction we argue that, in addition to important roles in motor control, the inferior olive, and related olivo-cortico-nuclear circuits, should be considered part of a larger network of brain structures involved in coordinating survival behavior through the selective relaying of "teaching signals" arising from higher centers associated with emotional behaviors.

- Abstract
Exploration methods are discussed for oil and gas reserves lying under thick layers of salt such as the Tupi and Jupiter resources in deep water off Brazil and in the Gulf of Mexico. Marine seismic surveys involve attaching hydrophones to buoyant cables known as streamers. A subsalt survey requires a large array of sensors which can be achieved by using a long and wide spread or by multi-passes over the same area. Multiple time-lapse surveys are also being increasingly used for reservoir monitoring. In the multi-azimuth approach the survey vessel criss-crosses the target at various angles, and the rich-azimuth method involves the use of a wide- azimuth spread to make multiple passes over the target. Details are also given of the use of magnetotellurics as part of wide azimuth surveying. A table lists details of 9 significant finds in the Gulf of Mexico in the period 1991-2008, 2 in the Santos Basin and 1 in the Caspian Sea., Exploration methods are discussed for oil and gas reserves lying under thick layers of salt such as the Tupi and Jupiter resources in deep water off Brazil and in the Gulf of Mexico.
