Abstract

Exercising direct control over the unusual electronic structures arising from quantum confinement effects in graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) - atomically defined quasi one-dimensional (1D) strips of graphene - is intimately linked to geometric boundary conditions imposed by the bonding within the ribbon. Besides composition and position of substitutional dopant atoms, the symmetry of the unit cell, the width, length, and termination of a GNR are integral factors that collectively can give rise to highly tuneable semiconductors, innate metallicity arising from topological zero-mode engineering, or magnetic ordering in spin-polarized lattices. Here we present a rational design that integrates each of these interdependent variables within a modular bottom-up synthesis. Our hybrid chemical approach relies on a catalyst transfer polymerization (CTP) that establishes uniform control over length, width, and end-groups. Complemented by a surface-assisted cyclodehydrogenation step, uniquely enabled by matrix-assisted direct (MAD) transfer protocols, geometry and functional handles encoded in a polymer template are faithfully mapped onto the structure of the corresponding GNR. Bond-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy (BRSTM) and spectroscopy (STS) validate the robust correlation between polymer template design and GNR electronic structure and provide a universal and modular platform for the systematic exploration and seamless integration of functional GNRs with integrated circuit architectures., Comment: 23 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Cardiac physiologic pacing (CPP), encompassing cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) and conduction system pacing (CSP), has emerged as a pacing therapy strategy that may mitigate or prevent the development of heart failure (HF) in patients with ventricular dyssynchrony or pacing-induced cardiomyopathy. This clinical practice guideline is intended to provide guidance on indications for CRT for HF therapy and CPP in patients with pacemaker indications or HF, patient selection, pre-procedure evaluation and preparation, implant procedure management, follow-up evaluation and optimization of CPP response, and use in pediatric populations. Gaps in knowledge, pointing to new directions for future research, are also identified.

Abstract

Recently, we witnessed how the synergy of small satellite technology and solar sailing propulsion enables new missions. Together, small satellites with lightweight instruments and solar sails offer affordable access to deep regions of the solar system, also making it possible to realize hard-to-reach trajectories that are not constrained to the ecliptic plane. Combining these two technologies can drastically reduce travel times within the solar system, while delivering robust science. With solar sailing propulsion capable of reaching the velocities of ~5-10 AU/yr, missions using a rideshare launch may reach the Jovian system in two years, Saturn in three. The same technologies could allow reaching solar polar orbits in less than two years. Fast, cost-effective, and maneuverable sailcraft that may travel outside the ecliptic plane open new opportunities for affordable solar system exploration, with great promise for heliophysics, planetary science, and astrophysics. Such missions could be modularized to reach different destinations with different sets of instruments. Benefiting from this progress, we present the "Sundiver" concept, offering novel possibilities for the science community. We discuss some of the key technologies, the current design of the Sundiver sailcraft vehicle and innovative instruments, along with unique science opportunities that these technologies enable, especially as this exploration paradigm evolves. We formulate policy recommendations to allow national space agencies, industry, and other stakeholders to establish a strong scientific, programmatic, and commercial focus, enrich and deepen the space enterprise and broaden its advocacy base by including the Sundiver paradigm as a part of broader space exploration efforts., Comment: 35 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

Reported here are transverse single-spin asymmetries ($A_{N}$) in the production of charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) and Feynman-$x$ ($x_F$) in polarized $p^{\uparrow}$+$p$, $p^{\uparrow}$+Al, and $p^{\uparrow}$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV. The measurements have been performed at forward and backward rapidity ($1.4<|\eta|<2.4$) over the range of $1.50$) in $p^{\uparrow}$+$p$ collisions, whereas the $p^{\uparrow}$+Al and $p^{\uparrow}$+Au results show smaller asymmetries. Presented are the first measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries ($A_N$) for neutral pions and eta mesons in $p$+Au and $p$+Al collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV in the pseudorapidity range $|\eta|<$0.35 with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The asymmetries are consistent with zero, similar to those for midrapidity neutral pions and eta mesons produced in $p$+$p$ collisions. Abstract

Determining the complexity of molecules has important applications from molecular design to understanding the history of the process that led to the formation of the molecule. Currently, it is not possible to experimentally determine, without full structure elucidation, how complex a molecule is. Assembly Theory has been developed to quantify the complexity of a molecule by finding the shortest path to construct the molecule from building blocks, revealing its molecular assembly index (MA). In this study, we present an approach to rapidly and exhaustively calculate the MA of molecules from the spectroscopic measurements. We demonstrate that molecular complexity (MA) can be experimentally estimated using three independent techniques: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), and infrared spectroscopy (IR), and these give consistent results with good correlations with the theoretically determined values from assembly theory. By identifying and analysing the number of absorbances in IR spectra, carbon resonances in NMR, or molecular fragments in tandem MS, the molecular assembly of an unknown molecule can be reliably estimated from experimental data. This represents the first experimentally quantifiable approach to defining molecular assembly, a reliable metric for complexity, as an intrinsic property of molecules and can also be performed on complex mixtures. Abstract

Electron-hole pair excitations in semiconductors have been predicted to be able to give rise to a highly correlated many-body ground state, the excitonic insulator (EI). Under appropriate conditions below a critical temperature (Tc), strongly bound electron-hole pairs spontaneously form and undergo a phase transition from a normal band insulator into an exciton condensate, transforming the parent material into a novel correlated insulator. Despite recent advances in spectroscopic tools, clear direct experimental evidence for the EI state has been elusive and is often obfuscated by accompanying electronic effects. Here we present the reticular bottom-up synthesis of a Kagome lattice of [4]triangulene, a two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic framework (COF) imbued with a deliberate excitonic instability excitons with binding energies larger than the bandgap arising from a pair of flat bands (FBs). Theoretical analyses based on first-principles calculations and scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (STS) reveal quasiparticle spectral signatures mixing valence (VB) and conduction (CB) characteristics of the FBs along with a non-trivial semiconducting gap that can only be explained by invoking many-body theory. Our findings spectroscopically corroborate the nature of a FB induced exciton insulator ground state and provide a robust yet highly tuneable platform for the exploration of correlated quasi boson physics in quantum materials., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures

Abstract Obesity and systemic inflammation are associated with breast cancer (BC) outcomes. Systemic inflammation is increased in obesity. We examined the association between C-reactive protein (CRP) and disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) overall, and according to body mass index (BMI). We assembled a cohort of women with BC (stage I–III) seen at Aarhus University Hospital between 2010 and 2020 who donated blood at BC diagnosis (N = 2673). CRP levels were measured and divided into quartiles. We followed patients from surgery to recurrence, contralateral BC, other malignancy, death, emigration, or end-of-follow-up. Abstract

Abstract Background One in five people living in Ireland is a migrant. Understanding the distinctive health needs of this diverse population is essential to provide evidence-based, culturally sensitive primary care services. The aim of this review is to systematically examine changes in migrant health research in Ireland and to inform research, policy and practice in the field. Methods To update a 2017 scoping review of migrant health research in Ireland, we used Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, updates by Colquhoun and Peters and the PRISMA-ScR from the Joanna Briggs Institute to search 10 databases covering May 2017 - March 2023. Findings were analysed using the World Health Organisation Strategy and Action Plan for Refugee and Migrant Health 2016–2023, which identifies 9 priority strategic areas (SA). Findings were compared with the 2017 review. Results 62 papers were identified. There has been an increase in studies over time from an average of five per year in the previous review to an average of 10 per year in this review. There is growing interest in research about SA1: Collaborative action on migrant health issues and SA2: Advocacy for the right to health of refugees and migrants – evidenced by an increase of 13% in this review. Similarly to 2017, the majority of papers align with three of the nine WHO Strategic Areas; SA3: Addressing the social determinants of health (24%), SA4: Achieving public health preparedness (29%) and SA5: Strengthening health systems (26%). The volume of research on SA6: Communicable diseases (11%) and SA7: Noncommunicable diseases (19%) remains stable however research on SA8: Health screening and assessment (5%) and SA9: Improving health information and communication (2%) remains low. Conclusions The increase in the volume of research on migrant health in Ireland is notable. The analysis over time illuminates changes in the focus of research studies. Gaps in research about screening, assessment and health information warrant particular attention. It is also necessary to continue paying attention to areas of recent growth and stagnation for a balanced and comprehensive evidence base. Mobilising resources to continue this increase is needed for evidence-based policy and practice.

Abstract Background Though older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have a greater mortality risk than those without CKD, traditional risk factors poorly predict mortality in this population. Therefore, we tested our hypothesis that two common geriatric risk factors, frailty and cognitive impairment, and their co-occurrence, might improve mortality risk prediction in CKD. Methods Among participants aged ≥ 60 years from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011–2014), we quantified associations between frailty (physical frailty phenotype) and global/domain-specific cognitive function (immediate-recall [CERAD-WL], delayed-recall [CERAD-DL], verbal fluency [AF], executive function/processing speed [DSST], and global [standardized-average of 4 domain-specific tests]) using linear regression, and tested whether associations differed by CKD using a Wald test. We then tested whether frailty, global cognitive impairment (1.5SD below the mean), or their combination improved prediction of mortality (Cox models, c-statistics) compared to base models (likelihood-ratios) among those with and without CKD. Results Among 3,211 participants, 1.4% were cognitively impaired, and 10.0% were frail; frailty and cognitive impairment co-occurrence was greater among those with CKD versus those without (1.2%vs.0.1%). Frailty was associated with worse global cognitive function (Cohen’s d = -0.26SD,95%CI -0.36,-0.17), and worse cognitive function across all domains; these associations did not differ by CKD (pinteractions > 0.05). Mortality risk prediction improved only among those with CKD when accounting for frailty (p[likelihood ratio test]
