Telocytes (TCs) are new cellular entities of mesenchymal origin described almost ubiquitously in human and mammalian organs (www.telocytes. com). Different subtypes of TCs were described, all forming networks in the interstitial space by homo- and heterocellular junctions. Previous studies analysed the gene expression profiles of chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 17 and 18 of murine pulmonary TCs. In this study, we analysed by bioinformatics tools the gene expression profiles of chromosome 4 for murine pulmonary TCs and compared it with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), fibroblasts (Fbs), alveolar type II cells (ATII), airway basal cells, proximal airway cells, CD8(+) T cells from bronchial lymph nodes (TBL) and CD8(+) T cells from lungs (T-L). Key functional genes were identified with the aid of the reference library of the National Center for Biotechnology Information Gene Expression Omnibus database. Seventeen genes were up-regulated and 56 genes were down-regulated in chromosome 4 of TCs compared with other cells. Four genes (Akap2, Gpr153, Sdc3 and Tbc1d2) were up-regulated between one and fourfold and one gene, Svep1, was overexpressed over fourfold. The main functional networks were identified and analysed, pointing out to a TCs involvement in cellular signalling, regulation of tissue inflammation and cell expansion and movement. d -galactose ( d -gal)-induced cardiac alterations and Doxorubicin (Dox)-induced cardiomyocyte senescence are commonly used models to study cardiac aging. Accumulating evidence has suggested that microRNAs (miRNAs, miRs) are critically involved in the regulation of cellular and organismal aging and age-related diseases. However, little has been revealed about the roles of miRNAs in cardiac alterations induced by d -gal and Dox. In this study, we used miRNA arrays to investigate the dysregulated miRNAs in heart samples from 15 month-old versus 2 month-old male C57BL/6 mice and further validated them in d -gal-induced pseudo-aging mouse model and Dox-induced cardiomyocyte senescence in vitro model. We confirmed a significant increase of miR-21 in all these models by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions. We further demonstrated that miR-21 was able to promote Dox-induced cardiomyocyte senescence whereas suppression of miR-21 could prevent that, as determined by percentage of β-gal-positive cells and gene markers of aging. Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) was identified as a target gene of miR-21, mediating its effect in increasing cardiomyocyte senescence. Finally, we found that miR-21 knockout mice were resistant to d -gal-induced alterations in aging-markers and cardiac function. Collectively, this study provides direct evidence that inhibition of miR-21 is protective against d -gal-induced cardiac alterations and Dox-induced cardiomyocyte senescence via targeting PTEN. Objective. We aim to evaluate the implications of cesarean delivery compared to natural birth by analyzing newborns’ systemic and cerebral oxygenation levels during the first 10 minutes of life. Design. This paper presents a 4-year prospective cohort study. Setting. Polizu Maternity, "Alessandrescu-Rusescu" National Institute for Mother and Child's Protection, Bucharest, Romania. Patients. Randomly selected pregnant women and their fetuses. Interventions. During the 10 min following umbilical cord clamping, regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rcSO2) was measured using the INVOS 5100 device and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) was determined using the Masimo SET pulse oximeter in neonates from cesarean and natural deliveries. Main outcome measures. The cerebral fractional tissue oxygen extraction (cFTOE) in the first 10 minutes of life was calculated based on these values. Results. Newborns delivered vaginally showed higher rcSO2 levels at 1 minute of life than those born via C-section (40.5 ± 16.5% vs 33.7 ± 14.8%, AUC = 0.625; IC 95%: 0.506 - 0.743; p = 0.043). Neonatal cFTOE at 1 minute of life was significantly higher in caesarean-delivered newborns versus naturally born neonates (0.40 ± 0.25 vs 0.50 ± 0.19, p = 0.03; AUC = 0.638; IC 95%: 0.517-0.758; p = 0.023). Conclusions. Prelabor cesarean delivery seemingly plays a significant role in the process of fetal and neonatal cerebral oxygenation immediately postnatally, which is highlighted by lower rcSO2 and higher cFTOE values. Cerebral oxygen saturation monitoring in the delivery room allows the optimization of oxygen therapy in order to prevent the consequences of hypoxia or hyperoxia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hematogenous path remains an important pathway of spread for ovarian cancer; the most commonly reported sites of involvement are represented by liver and lungs. The aim of this paper is to report a rare situation in which adrenal metastasis from ovarian carcinoma was encountered. Case report. The 55-year-old patient with previous history of surgically treated ovarian cancer was diagnosed at 18 months follow-up with an isolated lesion at the level of the right adrenal gland. After completing the biochemical analysis, in order to exclude an endocrine disorder, the final suspicion of diagnostic was of an adrenal metastasis and was submitted to adrenalectomy. The histopathological studies confirmed the presence of an adrenal metastasis of ovarian cancer. Conclusions. Although rare situations, adrenal metastases from ovarian cancer can be encountered and might be successfully treated by surgery with curative intent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
