Omics methodologies, such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics and microbiomics, have revolutionized biological research by allowing comprehensive molecular analysis in livestock animals. However, despite being widely used in various animal species, research on donkeys has been notably scarce. China, renowned for its rich history in donkey husbandry, plays a pivotal role in their conservation and utilization. China boasts 24 distinct donkey breeds, necessitating conservation efforts, especially for smaller breeds facing extinction threats. So far, omics approaches have been employed in studies of donkey milk and meat, shedding light on their composition and quality. Similarly, omics methods have been utilized to explore the molecular basis associated with donkey growth, meat production, and quality traits. Omics analysis has also unraveled the critical role of donkey microbiota in health and nutrition, with gut microbiome studies revealing associations with factors such as pregnancy, age, transportation stress, and altitude. Furthermore, omics applications have addressed donkey health issues, including infectious diseases and reproductive problems. In addition, these applications have also provided insights into the improvement of donkey reproductive efficiency research. In conclusion, omics methodologies are essential for advancing knowledge about donkeys, their genetic diversity, and their applications across various domains. Escherichia coli isolates from intensive poultry production are associated with antimicrobial resistance and worldwide health problems. The aim of the study was to detect and evaluate the phenotypic and genotypic antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, phylogenetic typing, and virulence factors in E. coli isolates from the rectal swabs of chickens from two farms and swabs of chicken meat purchased from Slovakian food markets. Interpretative readings of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) revealed dominant resistance to ampicillin (>50%) in both groups. We also detected higher resistance to ciprofloxacin (45%), tetracycline, ampicillin + sulbactam, and trimethoprim + sulfonamide (each >30%). Here, 28.57% of the strains studied were multidrug-resistant (MDR). The formation of weak biofilms was confirmed in 8.8% of E. coli, while one of the strains obtained from chicken cloacal swabs was classified as a strong biofilm producer. The most frequently confirmed phylogenetic groups in E. coli were B1 and A1 in all groups. PCR detection revealed the presence of genes encoding tetracycline resistance (tetAB) and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (qnrABS), and Int1 (52.9%), Tn3 (76.5%), kpsMT II (8.8%), fimA (97.1%), cvaC (38.2%), and iutA (76.5%) genes in the strains studied. Our results demonstrate that chickens and chicken meat were the source of antibiotic-resistant, biofilm-forming, and virulent E. coli, representing a potential risk from the point of view of the One Health concept. Background: Foodborne diseases are a serious public health concern, and food-producing animals are a major source of contamination. Methods: The present study analysed Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp. isolated from faecal samples of 100 fattening pigs and from 52 samples of pork meat. Results: The results showed that the majority of the analysed meat samples were considered satisfactory in terms of microbiological quality (92.3% for E. coli and 94.2% for Salmonella spp.). Salmonella spp. was identified in 5.8% of the meat samples, whereas E. coli was detected in 89.5% of all samples (69.2% in meat and 100% in faecal samples). Furthermore, 1.9% of the faecal samples contained Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli and 3.9% contained enterotoxigenic E. coli. All sequenced isolates presented virulence genes for extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli. Moreover, 75.0% of E. coli isolates from meat and 71.8% from faeces samples showed antibiotic resistance, with 40.7% and 51.4%, respectively, being multidrug-resistant (MDR). The most prevalent resistances were to tetracycline, ampicillin, and sulfamethoxazole, and one E. coli isolate showed resistance to extended-spectrum β-lactamase. Conclusions: This study highlights the role of pigs as a potential source of human contamination and the importance of a One Health approach to ensure food safety and to promote public health. The use of starter cultures in the meat industry is common, even if the number of available commercial cultures is limited, inducing product standardisation and microbial diversity reduction. On the other hand, some artisanal products relying on spontaneous fermentation can represent a source of isolation of new interesting strains. In this work, four LAB strains derived from Mediterranean spontaneously fermented sausages were tested as new starter cultures for the industrial production of fermented sausages, in comparison to a commercial starter culture. The products obtained were analysed for physico-chemical parameters, microbiota, biogenic amines and aroma profile. A consumer test was also performed to evaluate product acceptability. The strains induced different acidification kinetics. LAB counts showed high persistence when Latilactobacillus curvatus HNS55 was used as the starter culture, while the addition of Companilactobacillus alimentarius CB22 resulted in a high concentration of enterococci (6 log CFU/g), 2 log higher than in other samples. Tyramine was detected at concentrations of 150–200 mg/kg, except for in the sample produced with Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BPF2 (60 mg/kg). Differences were observed in the aroma profile, with a high amount of 2-butanone found in the samples obtained with Comp. alimentarius CB22. These latter sausages also showed the lowest score in terms of acceptability. The implementation of omics technologies and associated bioinformatics approaches hold significant promise for generating additional evidence for food and feed risk assessments thereby enhancing the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) capacity to deliver scientific opinions and guidance documents in the future. To explore this possibility, EFSA launched a Call for the development of a roadmap to identify the main actions needed for a wider use of Omics in future risk assessments. To address this objective, this action roadmap outlines six project proposals. These proposals are based on a comprehensive mapping of the state‐of‐the‐art omics and associated bioinformatics technologies in research, EFSA's activities as well as current and planned activities from other relevant regulatory bodies and organisations. The outlined recommendations also address some of the identified main knowledge gaps and highlight the added value that further investments in the different food & feed safety scientific domains could bring. In addition, the work in this roadmap addresses some key challenges and blockers that might hinder a wider integration of omics in risk assessment and leverages on the opportunities for cooperation with external stakeholders. Finally, this roadmap provides suggestions on how EFSA may more broadly and effectively engage with relevant stakeholders in the use of omics technologies and associated bioinformatics approaches in regulatory science. Background: Seafood is increasingly traded worldwide, but its supply chain is particularly prone to frauds. To increase consumer confidence, prevent illegal trade, and provide independent validation for eco-labelling, accurate tools for seafood traceability are needed. Here we show that the use of microbiome profiling (MP) coupled with machine learning (ML) allows precise tracing the origin of Manila clams harvested in areas separated by small geographic distances. The study was designed to represent a real-world scenario. Clams were collected in different seasons across the most important production area in Europe (lagoons along the northern Adriatic coast) to cover the known seasonal variation in microbiome composition for the species. DNA extracted from samples underwent the same depuration process as commercial products (i.e. at least 12 h in open flow systems). Results: Machine learning-based analysis of microbiome profiles was carried out using two completely independent sets of data (collected at the same locations but in different years), one for training the algorithm, and the other for testing its accuracy and assessing the temporal stability signal. Briefly, gills (GI) and digestive gland (DG) of clams were collected in summer and winter over two different years (i.e. from 2018 to 2020) in one banned area and four farming sites. 16S DNA metabarcoding was performed on clam tissues and the obtained amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) table was used as input for ML MP. The best-predicting performances were obtained using the combined information of GI and DG (consensus analysis), showing a Cohen K-score > 0.95 when the target was the classification of samples collected from the banned area and those harvested at farming sites. Classification of the four different farming areas showed slightly lower accuracy with a 0.76 score. Conclusions: We show here that MP coupled with ML is an effective tool to trace the origin of shellfish products. The tool is extremely robust against seasonal and inter-annual variability, as well as product depuration, and is ready for implementation in routine assessment to prevent the trade of illegally harvested or mislabeled shellfish. Understanding factors influencing Listeria monocytogenes biofilms aid in developing more effective elimination/prevention strategies. This study examined the effect of temperature (4 °C, 21 °C, 30 °C), materials (stainless steel 316 L with 2B and 2 R finishes, glass, and polypropylene), and slope (0°/horizontal or 90°/vertical) on mono- and dual-species biofilms using two L. monocytogenes strains and one Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain. All biofilms were grown in 10% TSB for 24 h and analyzed using culture-based methods. Additionally, the architecture of monospecies biofilms was studied using fluorescence microscopy. Overall, P. aeruginosa showed higher biofilm formation potential (6.2 log CFU/cm2) than L. monocytogenes (4.0 log CFU/cm2). Temperature greatly influenced P. aeruginosa and varied for L. monocytogenes. The slope predominantly influenced L. monocytogenes monospecies biofilms, with cell counts increasing by up to 2 log CFU/cm2. Surface material had little impact on biofilm formation. The study highlights the varying effects of different parameters on multispecies biofilms and the importance of surface geometry. This paper seeks to delimit communicational questions for the study of the phenomenon of audiophilia. The research on audiophilia raises topics such as the influence and experience of audio technologies, the circulation of different types of sound media, the feedback between production and consumption, the practices that connect human and nonhuman in the reconfiguration of artistic production, etc. We aim to present three axes of analysis of audiofilia as a problem of communication. Firstly, audiophilia as a concept, its historical, functional and ideological determinations. Secondly, the musical production practices that problematise the links between art and technique in the scope of studios and phonographic recordings. Simple Summary: An extensive countrywide investigation was carried out in Greece to study gastrointestinal zoonotic pathogens in horses. Faecal samples were collected and tested. Gastrointestinal pathogens were detected in the faecal samples obtained from 43% of horses examined. They were detected more frequently in samples from horses in courtyard housing. The most frequently detected zoonotic pathogens were enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and Shiga-like toxin-producing E. coli stx1/stx2. The decreasing age of horses and the presence of livestock at the same premises as the horses emerged to be significantly associated with the detection of pathogens. The findings have indicated the presence of pathogens with zoonotic potential in horses and have suggested factors that may play some role in this. The objectives of this study were (a) to detect zoonotic gastrointestinal pathogens in faecal samples of horses using the FilmArray® GI Panel and (b) to identify variables potentially associated with their presence. Faecal samples collected from 224 horses obtained during a countrywide study in Greece were tested by means of the BioFire® FilmArray® Gastrointestinal (GI) Panel, which uses multiplex-PCR technology for the detection of 22 pathogens. Gastrointestinal pathogens were detected in the faecal samples obtained from 97 horses (43.3%). Zoonotic pathogens were detected more frequently in samples from horses in courtyard housing (56.0%) than in samples from horses in other housing types (39.7%) (p = 0.040). The most frequently detected zoonotic pathogens were enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (19.2% of horses) and Shiga-like toxin-producing E. coli stx1/stx2 (13.8%). During multivariable analysis, two variables emerged as significant predictors for the outcome 'detection of at least one zoonotic pathogen in the faecal sample from an animal': (a) the decreasing age of horses (p = 0.0001) and (b) the presence of livestock at the same premises as the horses (p = 0.013). As a significant predictor for the outcome 'detection of two zoonotic pathogens concurrently in the faecal sample from an animal', only the season of sampling of animals (autumn) emerged as significant in the multivariable analysis (p = 0.049). The results indicated a diversity of gastrointestinal pathogens with zoonotic potential in horses and provided evidence for predictors for the infections; also, they can serve to inform horse owners and handlers regarding the possible risk of transmission of pathogens with zoonotic potential. Antibiotic resistance constitutes a significant public health challenge, with diverse reservoirs of resistant bacteria playing pivotal roles in their dissemination. Among these reservoirs, pets are carrying antibiotic-resistant strains. The objective of this study was to assess the resistance profiles of Escherichia coli, and the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing E. coli strains in dogs and cats from Tamaulipas, Mexico. A total of 300 stool samples (150 dogs and 150 cats) from healthy pets were subjected to analysis. Antibiotic susceptibility testing and the identification of ESBLs were carried out by disc diffusion method. The presence of resistance genes, class 1, 2, and 3 integrons (intI1, intI2 , and intI3) and phylogroups was determined by PCR analysis. The findings reveal that 42.6% (128/300) of the strains exhibited resistance to at least one of the eight antibiotics assessed, and 18.6% (56/300) demonstrated multidrug resistance (MDR), that distributed across 69 distinct resistance patterns. Altogether 2.6% of E. coli strains (8/300) were confirmed as TEM and CTX-M type ESBL producers. These outcomes underscore the roles of dogs and cats in Tamaulipas as reservoirs for the dissemination of MDR and/or ESBL strains. The results underscore the necessity for conducting prevalence studies on ESBL-producing E. coli , forming a foundation for comprehending the present scenario and formulating strategies for the control and mitigation of this issue. This study reports for the first time the detection of Brachyspira aalborgi in faeces and rectal biopsies of a female suffering for 3-4 months of abdominal pain with long-standing mucosal diarrhoea, rectal bleeding and suspected carcinoma of the rectum. After pre-treatment of samples (faeces and biopsies) with a liquid medium (trypticase soy broth-TSB) containing foetal calf serum (FCS, 10%) and spectinomycin and rifampicin (TSB-SR) the first detection of B. aalborgi isolate HBS1 was observed after 48 h in the primary plates of selective blood agar modified medium (BAM) containing spectinomycin and rifampicin (BAM-SR), where growth zones were signalled by a small weakly beta-haemolytic halo. Attempts to subculture spirochaetes in agar media failed. The new HBS1 isolate was only propagated in TSB broth and at electron microscopy it showed 4 endoflagella inserted at each tapered end. The phenotypic characterization of HBS1 demonstrated absence of hippurate hydrolysis, indole production, alpha-galactosidase, alpha- and beta-glucosidase activities in accordance with the B. aalborgi type strain. Rapid identification of B. aalborgi isolate HBS1 was performed directly from faeces and rectal biopsies and subsequently from pure cultures by a genetic method based on 16S DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The sequence of 16S DNA amplicon of the isolate HBS1 was found 99.2% corresponding to that of the B. aalborgi type strain. Our results encourage further investigations for the development of a suitable selective agar medium for the isolating and cultivating B. aalborgi from human specimens.

This paper presents issues related to the assessment of the texture of aggregate concrete (EAC) surfaces using various methods for its verification. Microtexture was assessed using the British Pendulum Tester (BPT) and Dynamic Friction Tester (DFT). Two laser profilometers were used to assess macrotexture, circular texture meter (CTM) and stationary laser profilograph (SPL), as well as the commonly known volumetric method. Measurements were carried out on left and right tracks and in between them on five test sections of expressways. Based on the analyses performed, it was found that the results obtained by the DFT were less sensitive to changes in microtexture between individual tracks compared to the results obtained by the BPT. The BPN values in the left track were lower than those in the right track. However, the difference between the DFT20 results in these spots was insignificant. Both MPD and MTD values did not show significant differences between the right and left tracks. However, some differences were observed between the MPD parameters obtained using the CTM and SPL. This resulted from the different frequency and length of the scanned surface profile. However, the differences were at an acceptable level. A very high linear correlation was obtained in the case of BPN and DFT20 values (r − 0.719), and in the case of MPD and MTD values, the correlation was almost certain (r above 0.900). Based on a comparative analysis of the models estimating mean texture depth (MTD/ETD), a significant difference was observed between models based on EAC pavement results and those based on asphalt surfaces. In Brazil, the high cost of musical instruments is a prominent concern among indie rock musicians, given the genre's well-known emphasis on timbre. Through an insider research approach, involving timbre analysis and in-depth interviews with six band members, this article aims to identify signs emerging from the sound textures of Brazilian indie rock home recordings that express the situation of the economic limitations within which these musicians operate. The study concludes that even though each band deals with budgetary constraints in different ways and explores different strategies when looking for singular timbres, a shift towards professional mixing leads musicians away from a DIY approach to another of precarious work and authorial disidentification, which operates in favour of mainstream tendencies, and consequently, towards a Global North standardisation. Simple Summary: Salmonella continues to pose a significant threat to public health, standing as the second leading cause of foodborne illnesses in the European Union. In instances of severe infection, the treatment of salmonellosis necessitates the use of antimicrobials, among other therapeutic interventions. The escalating resistance of Salmonella spp. to antibiotics in recent years, primarily attributed to inappropriate usage in livestock, has raised considerable concerns among health authorities. The findings indicate that the low prevalence of Salmonella spp. isolated from samples of cattle, sheep, and goats in slaughterhouses, coupled with their comparatively low-to-moderate resistance to key antibiotics used in the treatment of human salmonellosis, suggests that the consumption of beef, lamb, and goat meat does not pose a substantial threat to public health in relation to the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Salmonella spp. pose a global threat as a leading cause of foodborne illnesses, particularly prevalent in the European Union (EU), where it remains the second cause of foodborne outbreaks. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Salmonella spp. has become a critical concern, complicating treatment strategies and escalating the risk of severe infections. The study focuses on large and small ruminants, identifying a prevalence of Salmonella spp. in slaughterhouses and revealing varied AMR rates across antimicrobial families throughout a meta-analysis. Also, comparison with AMR in human medicine was carried out by a systematic review. The results of the present meta-analysis displayed a prevalence of Salmonella spp. in large and small ruminants at slaughterhouses of 8.01% (8.31%, cattle; 7.04%, goats; 6.12%, sheep). According to the AMR of Salmonella spp., 20, 14, and 13 out of 62 antimicrobials studied were classified as low (<5%), high (>5% but <10%), and very high (>10%), respectively. Salmonella spp. did not display AMR against aztreonam, mezlocillin, ertapenem, meropenem, cefoxitin, ceftazidime, levofloxacin, tilmicosin, linezolid, fosfomycin, furazolidone, quinupristin, trimethoprim and spectinomycin. In contrast, a prevalence of 100% of AMR has been described against ofloxacin, lincomycin, and cloxacillin. In the context of the main antibiotics used in the treatment of human salmonellosis, azithromycin was shown to have the highest resistance among Salmonella spp. isolates from humans. Regarding cephalosporins, which are also used for the treatment of salmonellosis in humans, the prevalence of Salmonella spp. resistance to this class of antibiotics was similar in both human and animal samples. Concerning quinolones, despite a heightened resistance profile in Salmonella spp. isolates from ruminant samples, there appears to be no discernible compromise to the efficacy of salmonellosis treatment in humans since lower prevalences of AMR in Salmonella spp. isolated from human specimens were observed. Although the resistance of Salmonella spp. indicates some degree of concern, most antibiotics are not used in veterinary medicine. Thus, the contribution of cattle, sheep and goats to the rise of antibiotic resistance of Salmonella spp. and its potential impact on public health appears to be relatively insignificant, due to their low prevalence in carcasses and organs. Nevertheless, the observed low prevalence of Salmonella spp. in ruminants at slaughterhouse and the correspondingly low AMR rates of Salmonella spp. to key antibiotics employed in human medicine do not indicate that ruminant livestock poses a substantial public health risk concerning the transmission of AMR. Thus, the results observed in both the meta-analysis and systematic review suggests that AMR is not solely attributed to veterinary antibiotic use but is also influenced by factors such as animal health management (i.e., biosecurity measures, prophylactic schemes) and human medicine. Biofilms are the natural state for bacterial and fungal species. To achieve surface hygiene in commercial facilities, the presence of biofilms must be adequately considered. However, standard disinfectant and sanitizer efficacy tests required by the US-EPA and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) do not currently consider the role of environmental biofilms. This selective review will discuss what biofilms are and why they are important. We will also cover where they are commonly found in healthcare and food processing facilities and explore how current antimicrobial test methods required for product registration do not test for the presence of biofilms. Additionally, we will explore how a lack of efficacy against biofilms may play a role in the development of antimicrobial resistance in healthcare facilities due to the exchange of mobile genetic elements that occur readily in a biofilm matrix. Infections caused by KPC-producing K. pneumoniae continue to pose a significant clinical challenge due to their emerging resistance to new antimicrobials. We investigated the association between two drugs whose roles have been repurposed against multidrug-resistant bacteria: fosfomycin and temocillin. Temocillin exhibits unusual stability against KPC enzymes, while fosfomycin acts as a potent "synergizer". We conducted in vitro antimicrobial activity studies on 100 clinical isolates of KPC-producing K. pneumoniae using a combination of fosfomycin and temocillin. The results demonstrated synergistic activity in 91% of the isolates. Subsequently, we assessed the effect on Galleria mellonella larvae using five genetically different KPC-Kp isolates. The addition of fosfomycin to temocillin increased larvae survival from 73 to 97% (+Δ 32%; isolate 1), from 93 to 100% (+Δ 7%; isolate 2), from 63 to 86% (+Δ 36%; isolate 3), from 63 to 90% (+Δ 42%; isolate 4), and from 93 to 97% (+Δ 4%; isolate 10). Among the temocillin-resistant KPC-producing K. pneumoniae isolates (24 isolates), the addition of fosfomycin reduced temocillin MIC values below the resistance breakpoint in all isolates except one. Temocillin combined with fosfomycin emerges as a promising combination against KPC-producing K. pneumoniae, warranting further clinical evaluation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Musicological and traffic psychology research shows that emotions can be changed by certain tone combinations or sound characteristics and that emotions, in turn, influence our driving behavior. Nevertheless, there are no studies on how a dynamic active sound design could influence driving behavior via changing the emotional state of drivers in certain driving situations. Based on a previous study, emotionalizing sounds, characterized by their capacity to evoke specific emotional responses in individuals, were created and used to investigate their effect on the perception of safety distances in an online study. To test this, participants made statements on the safety distance shown in videos of cars following scenarios combined with emotionalizing sounds. The results show a significant difference in the estimated safety distance for videos combined with sounds invoking positive emotions like light-heartedness vs. sounds invoking negative emotions like feeling threatened. The odds of the safety distance being evaluated as too small compared with appropriate were two to three times higher for some threatening sounds vs. the positive sounds. The results further suggest that threatening sounds influenced participants' wishes to increase the depicted safety distances. The results show that emotionalizing sounds had effects on the participants, though not all were statistically significant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Klebsiella pneumoniae ST307 clone, identified in the mid-1990s, has emerged as a global antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) high-risk clone, significantly contributing to the global health challenge also posed by other AMR K. pneumoniae lineages. The acquisition of a blaCTX-M-15-carrying plasmid has facilitated its widespread dissemination. At Europe's major transport hub for the movement of live animals, Frankfurt Airport, a shipment of 20 live leopard tortoises was sampled during German border control in 2014. Phylogenetic analysis (MLST) identified a K. pneumoniae ST307 strain, prompting further investigation. Our analysis revealed the presence of a ~193 kb plasmid carrying a broad range of AMR genes, including blaCTX-M-15, blaTEM-1B, blaOXA-1, aac(3)-IIa, aac(6′)-Ib-cr, aph(3″)-Ib, aph(6)-Id, and qnrB1. Additionally, mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining region in gyrA (S83I) and parC (S80I) were detected. Phenotypic testing demonstrated resistance of the isolate to the most common antimicrobials used in both human and veterinary medicine; exceptions included carbapenems and newer β-lactamase inhibitor combinations. Because the role of imported exotic animals in the dissemination of AMR genes is largely deficient, the present study fills yet missing mosaic pieces in the complete picture of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacterales. Listeria monocytogenes is a ubiquitous bacterial pathogen that threatens the food chain and human health. In this study, whole-genome sequencing (WGS) was used for the genomic characterization of L. monocytogenes (n = 24) from beef and beef-based products. Multilocus Sequence Type (MLST) analysis revealed that ST204 of CC204 was the most common sequence type (ST). Other sequence types detected included ST1 and ST876 of CC1, ST5 of CC5, ST9 of CC9, ST88 of CC88, ST2 and ST1430 of CC2, and ST321 of CC321. Genes encoding for virulence factors included complete LIPI-1 (pfrA-hly-plcA-plcB-mpl-actA) from 54% (13/24) of the isolates of ST204, ST321, ST1430, and ST9 and internalin genes inlABC that were present in all the STs. All the L. monocytogenes STs carried four intrinsic/natural resistance genes, fosX, lin, norB, and mprF, conferring resistance to fosfomycin, lincosamide, quinolones, and cationic peptides, respectively. Plasmids pLGUG1 and J1776 were the most detected (54% each), followed by pLI100 (13%) and pLM5578 (7%). The prophage profile, vB_LmoS_188, was overrepresented amongst the isolates, followed by LP_101, LmoS_293_028989, LP_030_2_021539, A006, and LP_HM00113468. Listeria genomic island 2 (LGI-2) was found to be present in all the isolates, while Listeria genomic island 3 (LGI-3) was present in a subset of isolates (25%). The type VII secretion system was found in 42% of the isolates, and sortase A was present in all L. monocytogenes genomes. Mobile genetic elements and genomic islands did not harbor any virulence, resistance, or environmental adaptation genes that may benefit L. monocytogenes. All the STs did not carry genes that confer resistance to first-line antibiotics used for the treatment of listeriosis. The characterization of L. monocytogenes in our study highlighted the environmental resistance and virulence potential of L. monocytogenes and the risk posed to the public, as this bacterium is frequently found in food and food processing environments. Listeria monocytogenes is a human pathogen that has the ability to cause listeriosis, a disease with possible fatal outcomes. The typical route of infection is ingestion of the bacteria with contaminated food. In this study, 13 virulence-associated genes were examined with PCR in the genomes of 153 L. monocytogenes isolates collected from meat products and processing environments in Poland. All isolates possessed genes from LIPI-1—hly, actA, plcA, plcB and mpl—as well as four internalins: inlA, inlB, inlC, inlJ. Invasion-associated protein iap, as well as genes prfA and sigB, encoding regulatory proteins, were also detected in all isolates. Gene flaA, encoding flagellin, was detected in 113 (74%) isolates. This was the only gene that was not detected in all isolates, as its presence is serotype-dependent. Gene actA showed polymorphism with longer and shorter variants in PCR amplicons. Two isolates were characterized by truncated inlB genes, lacking 141 bp in their sequence, which was confirmed by gene sequencing. All isolates were positive in hemolysis assays, proving the synthesis of functional PrfA and Hly proteins. Escherichia coli can harbor a broad repertoire of virulence and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes, which can be exchanged across the human gastrointestinal microflora, thus posing a public health risk. In this study, 6 batches of artisanal soft cheese and a 6-month ripened fermented dried sausage were investigated to assess the occurrence, phylogeny, and genomic traits (AMR, virulence, and mobilome) of E. coli. 30 and 3 strains isolated from salami and cheese food chains, respectively, were confirmed as E. coli by whole genome sequencing. The accumulation of single nucleotide polymorphism differences within small clusters of strains encompassing batches or processing stages, combined with high serotype and phylogroup diversity, suggested the occurrence of different contamination phenomena among the facilities. A total of 8 isolates harbored plasmid-mediated resistance genes, including one cheese strain that carried an IncQ1 plasmid carrying AMR determinants to macrolides [mph(B)], sulfonamides (sul1, sul2), trimethoprim (dfrA1), and aminoglycosides [aph(3")-Ib and aph(6)-Id]. A pool of virulence-associated genes in the class of adhesion, colonization, iron uptake, and toxins, putative ColV-positive iron uptake systems sit, iro, or iuc (8 salami and 2 cheese), plasmid-encoded hemolysin operon hlyABCD (one salami), and potential atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (3 salami environment) were reported. Simple Summary: Abattoir lung lesion scoring is a common practice to assess the impact of respiratory diseases in pig production, but whether the information obtained could be used to optimize antimicrobial stewardship programs has rarely been investigated. In this study, lung and pleural scores collected at slaughter from Italian heavy pigs were compared with on-farm antimicrobial use during the six months prior to slaughtering. Lung scores were positively associated with the past use of antimicrobials considered critical for human medicine, suggesting that batches with worse scores may have been unsuccessfully treated with first-choice antimicrobials. This result emphasizes the role of abattoirs as strategic observatories for pig respiratory diseases, which may also be helpful for antimicrobial stewardship. The information obtained could provide useful feedback aiding the identification of gaps in biosecurity or inadequate vaccination plans, thus helping to reduce on-farm antimicrobial use. Respiratory diseases significantly affect intensive pig finishing farms, causing production losses and increased antimicrobial use (AMU). Lesion scoring at slaughter has been recognized as a beneficial practice to evaluate herd management. The integrated analysis of abattoir lesion scores and AMU data could improve decision-making by providing feedback to veterinarians and farmers on the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatments, thus rationalizing their use. This study compared lung and pleural lesion scores collected at Italian pig slaughterhouses with on-farm AMU, estimated through a treatment index per 100 days (TI100). Overall, 24,752 pig carcasses, belonging to 236 batches from 113 finishing farms, were inspected. Bronchopneumonia and chronic pleuritis were detected in 55% and 48% of the examined pigs, respectively. Antimicrobials were administered in 97% of the farms during the six months prior to slaughter (median TI100 = 5.2), notwithstanding compliance with the mandatory withdrawal period. EMA category B (critical) antimicrobials were administered in 15.2% of cases (median TI100 = 0.06). The lung score was not associated with the total AMU, but significant, positive associations were found with the past use of critical antimicrobials (p = 0.041) and macrolides (p = 0.044). This study investigated, for the first time, the alterations in the uterine echotexture and blood flow in cyclic and acyclic (inactive ovary) goats using ultrasonography. The study aimed also to evaluate the metabolomic changes in the plasma of cyclic and acyclic goats. Furthermore, the histopathological approach was applied to the specimens of the uterus to validate the findings of this study. Based on monitoring the estrous cyclicity, goats were assigned into either a cyclic group or an acyclic one (n = 7, each). Ovarian morphometry and hemodynamics were assessed to confirm group assignment. Full ultrasonographic examinations were performed to assess the uterine echotexture by B-mode ultrasonography and uterine hemodynamics by color Doppler ultrasonography in the cyclic group (at days 10-12) and acyclic group. Additionally, blood samples were withdrawn for measuring hormonal concentrations and for metabolomics analysis. Specimens of the uterus were executed for histopathological evaluation in both groups. Results revealed alterations in the uterine hemodynamics and endometrial echotexture. Goats in the cyclic group attained a significantly higher color pixel area of the endometrium compared to those in the acyclic one (P< 0.001). However, the pixel intensity of the endometrium echotexture was significantly (P< 0.05) lower in the cyclic group than in the smooth inactive ovary one. There were significant (P< 0.05) increases in the concentrations of FSH, LH, and inhibin in the cyclic group compared to their concentrations in the acyclic one. Goats in the acyclic group attained noticeable (P< 0.001) lower concentrations of E 2 and P 4 than in the cyclic goats. The metabolomic results revealed the existence of several up- and down-regulated metabolites among the studied groups. In this investigation, untargeted metabolomic analysis revealed the existence of 5 up-regulated metabolites (ketoleucine, L-fucose, D-glucurono-6,3-lactone, melatonin, and 5-methoxy tryptamine) and 5 down-regulated ones (p-octopamine, 3-hydroxyisovaleric acid, methylmalonic acid, 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvic acid, and cadaverine) in the cyclic group compared to the acyclic one. The enrichment analysis of the significant metabolites showed top pathways that may be involved in these changes, such as fructose and mannose metabolism, valine. Leucine, and isoleucine biosynthesis, linoleic acid metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, and vitamin B6 metabolism based on the KEGG enriched pathway. Altogether, the histopathological assessment showed noticeable changes in the columnar epithelial lining of the endometrial epithelium, endometrial vascularity, and endometrial glands among the studied groups. In conclusion, this study extrapolated the differences between cyclic goats (during the mid-luteal phase) and acyclic ones in terms of hormonal, hemodynamics, echotexture of the uterus, and circulating metabolomics. Noise pollution has become an important type of environmental pollution, especially in populated areas, due to changes in transportation preferences and industry development. The World Health Organization reports that noise, along with air and water pollution, poses one of the most dangerous pollution threats in big cities. In this study, noise pollution measurements were carried in two different regions of a major city, focusing on sensitive points such as hospitals and schools. Surveys were administered to local residents in these areas to assess levels of annoyance due to traffic noise and awareness of noise pollution. The results show that the measured noise levels exceed the 55 dB(A) limit set by the Turkish Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, as well as WHO noise guideline values. According to the survey findings, it was determined that a majority of respondents in both regions demonstrated awareness of noise pollution. The study further revealed that while 19% of respondents reported high levels of annoyance due to traffic noise, they were more disturbed by industrial machinery and construction activities. Concerning the health effects of noise pollution, a greater number of participants in both regions reported experiencing headaches. Listeria (L.) innocua is typically considered a non-pathogenic bacterium that can sometimes act as an opportunistic pathogen in severely immunocompromised patients. However, it plays an important role in food safety because it acts as an indicator organism for potential contamination and the effectiveness of sanitation methods. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, virulence genes, antibiotic resistance profiles, heavy metal and disinfectant resistance genes of L. innocua isolates from animal-derived foods. In this study, we isolated and characterized 39 L. innocua strains recovered from commonly 400 consumed beef meat, fresh fish meat, raw cow milk, and traditional cheese samples collected in Giresun, Turkey. The occurrence of virulence-associated genes was detected, such as plcA (97.4%), iap (35.8%), and hlyA (15.3%). A high incidence of resistance was recorded for fusidic acid (100%), followed by oxacillin (97.4%), clindamycin (82%), trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (69.2%), benzylpenicillin (41%), nitrofurantoin (35.8%), and fosfomycin (35.8%). Overall, 100% (39/39) of the isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic, while 92.3% (36/39) of the isolate strains were multidrug resistant in the antimicrobial susceptibility tested. Among the L. innocua isolates (n = 39), 51.2%, 38.4%, 20.5%, 7.6%, 5.1%, 2.5%, and 2.5% were positive for qacH, cadA1, qacE, qacEΔ1-sul, qacJ, qacF, and qacG heavy metal and disinfectant resistance genes, respectively. Introduction: Raw milk is a nutrient‐rich food, but it may harbour harmful bacteria, such as enterotoxigenic Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), which can cause staphylococcal food poisoning. Antibiotic resistance of S. aureus in raw milk can increase the risk of such infections, particularly among susceptible individuals. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of enterotoxin genes a, d, g, i and j and the antibiotic resistance of S. aureus isolated from raw milk samples. Methods: During a 6‐month sampling period, 60 raw milk specimens were obtained from diverse locations in Yazd province, Iran. Antibiogram profiling was conducted via the disc diffusion method. In addition, staphylococcal enterotoxin (SE) genes a, d, g, i, and j were detected through real‐time PCR analysis. Results: Bacteriological assays confirmed the presence of S. aureus in 11 samples (18.3%). All isolates demonstrated 100% resistance to penicillin G but exhibited sensitivity to vancomycin, while resistance to other antibiotics ranged from 36.4% to 45.5%. The prevalence of enterotoxin genes in these strains showed variable distribution, with sea being the predominant SE (45.5%), followed by sed (36.4%), seg (18.2), sej and sei (9.1% each). Conclusions: This study discovered the presence of multiple enterotoxins in S. aureus strains obtained from raw milk samples. These strains also demonstrated resistance to a variety of antibiotics. A survey was conducted from 2018 to 2023 to assess the presence of Salmonella in 280 hunted wild boar (carcasses after evisceration and skinning, N = 226; liver, N = 258; and fecal samples, N = 174). The overall prevalence was 2.86% (confidence interval 95%, 1.45–5.45%) with five positive samples detected in carcasses, three in the liver, and one in a fecal sample. This prevalence was in line with those found in nearby areas denoting a low number of positive samples. Positive animals were over 24 months of age and weighed, before skinning, 59.00 ± 9.11 Kg and no difference was detected in microbial loads between samples positive and negative for Salmonella (aerobic colony count of 4.59 and 4.66 log CFU/400 cm2, and Enterobacteriaceae count of 2.89 and 2.73 log CFU/400 cm2 (mean values) in positive and negative subjects, respectively). Salmonella Stanleyville was the most frequently isolated serotype. A semiquantitative risk assessment was conducted for the first time in game meat considering two products, meat cuts intended for cooking and fermented dry sausages. Only proper cooking can reduce the risk of ingestion of Salmonella to the minimum for consumers, whereas ready-to-eat dry sausages constitute risk products in terms of foodborne Salmonellosis (risk score of 64 out of 100). In the last decade, various asphalt paving materials have undergone investigation for sound attenuation purposes. This research aims to delve into the innovative design of sustainable road pavements by examining sound absorption in rubber-modified asphalt mixtures. More specifically, the impact of alternative sustainable materials on the sound absorption of asphalt mixtures across different temperatures, precisely crumb rubber (CR) derived from recycling of end-of-life tires, was investigated. The acoustic coefficient and its Gaussian fit parameters (Peak, BandWidth, and Area Under the Curve) were evaluated. Five different types of asphalt mixtures were studied, encompassing dense, discontinuous, and open mixtures with 0%, 0.75%, and 1.50% CR incorporated through the dry process (DP). The results of sound absorption indicated a slight influence of crumb rubber at temperatures ranging from 10 °C to 60 °C, particularly in mixtures with high void content. On the other hand, as expected, the void content proved to be highly correlated with sound absorption. These findings facilitated the establishment of predictive models that correlate acoustic absorption spectra with the characteristics of asphalt mixtures. The effect of using different chloride salts on the quality of chicken burgers was evaluated by physicochemical, textural, and sensorial analyses. Chicken burgers were prepared with five different chloride salt amounts (T1: 2% NaCl, T2: 1% NaCl, T3: 1% NaCl + 1% KCl, T4: 1% NaCl + 1% CaCl2, and T5: 1% NaCl + 0.5% KCl + 0.5% CaCl2). The pH, moisture content, water activity, TBARS, cooking yield, moisture retention, and colour values were measured to determine the physicochemical properties of the burgers. Additionally, texture profile analysis and sensory evaluation were performed on the cooked samples. Reducing or partially replacing NaCl with KCl increased the pH level compared with the control, whereas using CaCl2 decreased the pH level. The highest moisture content and aw values were determined in burgers containing 1% NaCl. Partial substitution of NaCl with KCl and/or CaCl2 increased L* and b* values. A 50% reduction of NaCl or its replacement with 50% KCl did not affect the moisture retention and cooking yield compared with the control, but using CaCl2 caused a decrease. Also, the cooking process significantly affected the pH, moisture, aw, TBARS, and colour of the chicken burgers (p < 0.01). Reducing NaCl to 1% or partially replacing it with KCl and/or CaCl2, decreased the hardness, resilience, and chewiness of the samples, whereas the use of CaCl2 caused a greater decrease of these parameters. In the preparation of chicken burgers, a 50% substitution of NaCl with CaCl2 reduced sensory scores for appearance, flavour, texture, and general acceptability, whereas a reduction of NaCl or 50% substitution with KCl had no effect. Background: Listeria monocytogenes, a foodborne pathogen, poses a significant risk to public health due to its potential to cause severe infections termed "listeriosis". Raw milk and dairy products are common vehicles for L. monocytogenes transmission, amplifying the risk to consumers. Additionally, the emergence of antibiotic resistance in Listeria strains heightens concerns in human and veterinary medicine. Aim: This study aimed to assess the prevalence of L. monocytogenes in raw milk samples from Sri Lanka's Colombo district and to characterize the antibiotic resistance patterns of positive isolates. Methods: One hundred raw milk samples were collected from various milk collection centers. Samples were sourced from locations including Awissawella, Kahanthota, Meepe, Homagama, and Udahamulla. Antibiotic resistance was evaluated using standard methods like disk diffusion and well diffusion, testing ampicillin, penicillin, streptomycin, and tetracycline. Results: Of the 100 samples, L. monocytogenes was detected by conventional PCR in 83, with Awissawella having the highest occurrence (100%), followed by Kahanthota (81.81%), Meepe (81.48%), Homagama (77.27%), and Udahamulla (44.44%). Among the positive samples, 72 showed varying degrees of antibiotic resistance. The highest level of resistance was observed for penicillin (83.1%), followed by ampicillin (65%), streptomycin (32.53%), and tetracycline (10.84%). Sixty isolates (60%) displayed resistance to more than one antibiotic studied. Findings also revealed the widespread manual milking, predominant water usage over soap for hygiene, and common daily bathing of cows, highlighting the need for improved hygiene practices to minimize contamination risks in dairy farming. Conclusion: Raw milk contaminated with L. monocytogenes pose a serious public health risk. The study highlights the need for stringent hygiene measures in milk production and processing to safeguard consumers. The aim of this study was to find the effect of initial feeding with different live feeds in the larval stage on growth, hematological and blood biochemical indices of Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) after the stage of adaptation to dry food. In order to carry out this study, 900 Persian sturgeon with an average weight of 263.8 ± 2.3 mg (mean ± standard error) were selected from each larval stage treatment, and 300 larvae were selected in each tank with 4 treatments and 3 replications. During 21 days, they were acclimated to dry food using chironomid and formulated diet. These Persian sturgeon fries were reared in the larval stage in 4 treatments includes: 1 (Artemia + Daphnia), 2 (Artemia), 3 (Artemia + chironomid) and 4 (chironomid). Final weight, growth rate, feed efficiency and daily growth rate in treatment 4 were significantly higher compared with the other treatments. Specific growth rate and weight gain in treatment 4 were higher than that of all treatments and food conversion ratio in this treatment was lower than the other treatments (P<0.05). After adaptation of fries to commercial dry food, total protein and albumin were the highest in treatment 3 (Artemia and chironomid) and the lowest in treatment 1 (Artemia and Daphnia) (P>0.05). In terms of hematological indices, the number of white blood cells and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration were the highest in treatment 1 (Artemia and Daphnia) and lowest in treatment 2 (Artemia) (P < 0.05). According to the results of the present study, feeding with chironomid larvae in the larval stage has a great effect on the growth and blood biochemical indices of Persian sturgeon fry after getting used to dry food, which chironomid larvae was used to feed Persian sturgeon larvae. Invasive listeriosis, due to its severe nature in susceptible populations, has been the focus of many quantitative risk assessment (QRA) models aiming to provide a valuable guide in future risk management efforts. A review of the published QRA models of Listeria monocytogenes in seafood was performed, with the objective of appraising the effectiveness of the control strategies at different points along the food chain. It is worth noting, however, that the outcomes of a QRA model are context-specific, and influenced by the country and target population, the assumptions that are employed, and the model architecture itself. Studies containing QRA models were retrieved through a literature search using properly connected keywords on Scopus and PubMed®. All 13 QRA models that were recovered were of short scope, covering, at most, the period from the end of processing to consumption; the majority (85%) focused on smoked or gravad fish. Since the modelled pathways commenced with the packaged product, none of the QRA models addressed cross-contamination events. Many models agreed that keeping the product's temperature at 4.0–4.5 °C leads to greater reductions in the final risk of listeriosis than reducing the shelf life by one week and that the effectiveness of both measures can be surpassed by reducing the initial occurrence of L. monocytogenes in the product (at the end of processing). It is, therefore, necessary that future QRA models for RTE seafood contain a processing module that can provide insight into intervention strategies that can retard L. monocytogenes' growth, such as the use of bacteriocins, ad hoc starter cultures and/or organic acids, and other strategies seeking to reduce cross-contamination at the facilities, such as stringent controls for sanitation procedures. Since risk estimates were shown to be moderately driven by growth kinetic parameters, namely, the exponential growth rate, the minimum temperature for growth, and the maximum population density, further work is needed to reduce uncertainties. PEGylation has been the 'gold standard' in bioconjugation due to its ability to improve the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of native proteins. However, growing clinical evidence of hypersensitivity reactions to PEG due to pre-existing anti-PEG antibodies in healthy humans have raised concerns. Advancements in controlled polymerization techniques and conjugation chemistries have paved the way for the development of protein–polymer conjugates that can circumvent these adverse reactions while retaining the benefits of such modifications. Herein, we show the development of polynorbornene based bioconjugates of therapeutically relevant urate oxidase (UO) enzymes used in the treatment of gout synthesized by grafting-from ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Notably, these conjugates exhibit comparable levels of bioactivity to PEGylated UO and demonstrate increased stability across varying temperatures and pH conditions. Immune recognition of conjugates by anti-UO antibodies reveal low protein immunogenicity following the conjugation process. Additionally, UO conjugates employing zwitterionic polynorbornene successfully avoid recognition by anti-PEG antibodies, further highlighting a potential replacement for PEG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of the research was microbiological screening using MALDI-TOF technology starting from bulk raw milk to the finished dairy product and analyzing microorganisms that were being detected during the technological process of production of Ukrainskyi hard rennet cheese and which were clinically significant for human and animal health. Methods. Microbial detection was performed by accumulation and inoculation using the sector inoculation method on differential media for aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms with further MALDI-TOF identification. Sampling was carried out at 7 stages of cheese production: starting from bulk raw milk to bactofugation, after bactofugation to a mixture normalized in fat content, a pasteurized mixture, a mixture prepared for coagulation, cheese after pressing, and cheese after maturation. Microflora studies were repeated three times, with 405 samples examined. Microbiological studies of Ukrainskyi hard rennet cheese using Maldi TOF technology starting from raw materials to finished dairy products showed the presence of microorganisms at all stages of production - from bulk milk to the finished product. During the entire period of experiments, 43 species of various microorganisms have been isolated and identified. However, the number and individual types of microorganisms differed at different stages of production. Some microorganisms that have been isolated in raw milk are also found in the final product, such as Acinetobacter baumannii and Escherichia coli. In total, 18 types of microorganisms have been isolated and identified in the final product - hard rennet cheese, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Escherichia coli, which are of particular concern in the context of safe consumption of this cheese. Different research works have been carried out over the years to investigate new and reliable systems to test the authenticity of products obtained using organic cultivation methods. Based on a previously proposed integrated approach for discriminating organic from conventional products through the acquisition of isotopic data and other chemical and biochemical parameters, we herein report the results of an open-field cultivation case study for cauliflower crop. Experiments were carried out on soil, leaves, and corymb samples of cauliflowers grown using six different nitrogen fertilization treatments (organic, conventional, and mixed at different % of mineral fertilizers). The results of this study have shown that a multivariate analysis of isotopic data (13C/12C; 15N/14N, 34S/32S, 2H/1H, and 18O/16O isotopic ratios) combined with other parameters (fresh weight, total soluble solids, total acidity, cut resistance, CIE L*, a*, b* color indices, head height, head diameter, ascorbic acid content, total polyphenols, and ORAC units) performed using the linear discriminant analysis method gives researchers the possibility to discriminate organic products from conventional ones. Our study highlighted that the different isotopic signatures impressed on the cauliflowers by the different nitrogenous sources combined with the qualitative pattern of the crop, significantly affected by the different treatments, could effectively be jointly used to trace the organic origin of the crop. This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and the genetic diversity of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica in sausages from Southern Brazil, evaluate virulence genes and determine the phenotypic and genotypic basis of antimicrobial and sanitizer resistance. Salmonella was detected in sausage samples with an overall prevalence of 5.5%. The prevalent serovars were S. Infantis and S. Rissen. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) analysis yielded nine distinct PFGE profiles, and some of them were recurrently recovered in the same establishment on different dates. Among tested isolates, 28.5% showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent and a multidrug-resistance (MDR) profile was observed in 21.4%. Resistance occurred most frequently to ampicillin, sulfonamide, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim. Regarding the genotypic antimicrobial resistance profile, S. Schwarzengrund carried tet(B), strA, strB, and sul2 genes. Benzalkonium chloride and chlorhexidine were more effective than peracetic acid and sodium hypochlorite, showing lower minimum inhibitory concentration values. Six Salmonella serovars were found, demonstrating a potential risk of salmonellosis associated with consuming this food. Salmonella carrying virulence genes, MDR profile, and tolerance to sanitizers is a public health concern and a challenge for the food industry, suggesting that new strategies should be developed to control this pathogen. Gulls act as intermediaries in the exchange of microorganisms between the environment and human settlements, including Salmonella spp. This study assessed the antimicrobial resistance and molecular profiles of Salmonella spp. isolates obtained from fecal samples of gulls in the city of Porto, Portugal, in 2008 and 2023 and from water samples in 2023. Antimicrobial susceptibility profiling revealed an improvement in the prevalence (71% to 17%) and antimicrobial resistance between the two collection dates. Two isolate collections from both 2008 and 2023 underwent serotyping and whole-genome sequencing, revealing genotypic changes, including an increased frequency in the monophasic variant of S. Typhimurium. qacE was identified in 2008 and 2023 in both water and fecal samples, with most isolates exhibiting an MDR profile. The most frequently observed plasmid types were IncF in 2008 (23%), while IncQ1 predominated in 2023 (43%). Findings suggest that Salmonella spp. circulate between humans, animals, and the environment. However, the genetic heterogeneity among the isolates from the gulls' feces and the surface water may indicate a complex ecological and evolutionary dynamic shaped by changing conditions. The observed improvements are likely due to measures to reduce biological contamination and antimicrobial resistance. According to the latest WHO estimates (2015) of the global burden of foodborne diseases, Listeria monocytogenes is responsible for one of the most serious foodborne infections and commonly results in severe clinical outcomes. The 2013 French MONALISA prospective cohort identified that women born in Africa has a 3-fold increase in the risk of maternal neonatal listeriosis. One of the largest L. monocytogenes outbreaks occurred in South Africa in 2017-2018 with over 1,000 cases. Moreover, recent findings identified L. monocytogenes in human breast milk in Mali and Senegal with its relative abundance positively correlated with severe acute malnutrition. These observations suggest that the carriage of L. monocytogenes in Africa should be further explored, starting with the existing literature. For that purpose, we searched the peer-reviewed and grey literature published dating back to 1926 to date using six databases. Ultimately, 225 articles were included in this review. We highlighted that L. monocytogenes is detected in various sample types including environmental samples, food samples as well as animal and human samples. These studies were mostly conducted in five east African countries, four west African countries, four north African countries, and two Southern African countries. Moreover, only ~0.2% of the Listeria monocytogenes genomes available on NCBI were obtained from African samples, contracted with its detection. The pangenome resulting from the African Listeria monocytogenes samples revealed three clusters including two from South-African strains as well as one consisting of the strains isolated from breast milk in Mali and Senegal and, a vaginal post-miscarriage sample. This suggests there was a clonal complex circulating in Mali and Senegal. As this clone has not been associated to infections, further studies should be conducted to confirm its circulation in the region and explore its association with foodborne infections. Moreover, it is apparent that more resources should be allocated to the detection of L. monocytogenes as only 15/54 countries have reported its detection in the literature. It seems paramount to map the presence and carriage of L. monocytogenes in all African countries to prevent listeriosis outbreaks and the related miscarriages and confirm its association with severe acute malnutrition. Urban environments are characterized by a complex soundscape that varies across different periods and geographical zones. This paper presents a novel approach for analyzing nocturnal urban noise patterns and identifying distinct zones using mobile phone data. Traditional noise-monitoring methods often require specialized equipment and are limited in scope. Our methodology involves gathering audio recordings from city sensors and localization data from mobile phones placed in urban areas over extended periods with a focus on nighttime, when noise profiles shift significantly. By leveraging machine learning techniques, the developed system processes the audio data to extract noise features indicative of different sound sources and intensities. These features are correlated with geographic location data to create comprehensive city noise maps during nighttime hours. Furthermore, this work employs clustering algorithms to identify distinct noise zones within the urban landscape, characterized by their unique noise signatures, reflecting the mix of anthropogenic and environmental noise sources. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of using mobile phone data for nocturnal noise analysis and zone identification. The derived noise maps and zones identification provide insights into noise pollution patterns and offer valuable information for policymakers, urban planners, and public health officials to make informed decisions about noise mitigation efforts and urban development.
