Abstract

A systematic study of 50 adolescent self-poisoners aged from 13 to 18 demonstrated considerable discrepancies between the reasons chosen by the subjects to explain the overdoses and those chosen by clinical assessors. Most adolescents indicated that they had been feeling lonely or unwanted, or angry with someone, and had taken the overdose to alleviate or demonstrate this distress. A third said they had wanted to die. In contrast, clinical assessors tended to attribute the overdose to punitive or manipulative reasons and suggested that only seven out of the 50 had wished to die. The adolescents rarely indicated that they had taken the overdose to get help; this may explain the resistance that may be shown to psychiatric intervention, that casts doubt on the possible effectiveness of preventive agencies. Modification of attitudes to both self-poisoning and early help-seeking may be a more effective means of prevention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A simple method of classifying adolescent self-poisoners into three sub-groups on the basis of the duration of their problems and the presence or absence of behavioural disturbance is described. The three groups differed markedly in terms of factors concerning their families, especially their relationships with their parents, and in their medical and psychiatric histories, the nature of their overdoses and the problems they were facing at the time. The treatment offered to members of the three groups also differed. The method of classification may offer a useful means of distinguishing between subjects in terms of outcome, including subsequent adjustment and repeat attempts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In a consecutive sample of 50 adolescents aged 13-18 admitted to hospital after taking overdoses, 90 per cent were girls. There were other clear differences between this sample and adolescents in general. Twenty-four per cent had visited their general practitioners in the previous week, and 50 per cent during the previous month. The most common difficulties preceding the overdoses were problems with parents, boys or girlfriends, and with school or work, including unemployment. A substantial proportion of the subjects had recent recurrent physical ill health. In the majority of cases the problems appeared to be transient so that one month later two-thirds of the adolescents had shown considerable general improvement. However, 14 per cent were referred to hospital for further self-poisoning or self-injury in the following year. The recent increase in the incidence of self-poisoning among adolescents suggests that more attention must be paid to this group in terms of both primary and secondary prevention. 114. A second chance to learn: One child's path to literacy

The purpose of this case study was to examine the reading behaviors of an at-risk reader and how they changed over time as he participated in Reading Recovery instruction. The focus of the study was the description of a student's reading behaviors at the beginning of instruction, the changes that occurred over time and the student's reading behaviors at the end of the program. The participant in this case study was a child in grade one who received Reading Recovery instruction from a trained Reading Recovery teacher. Reading behaviors as the child read from a familiar book and a new book during the lessons were recorded weekly and analysed. Results of pre and post tests were also compared. The findings revealed that, over time as the child received lessons in Reading Recovery, his reading behaviors changed from those characteristic of an at-risk reader to those of a successful reader. Post test scores indicated improvement in letter and word identification, writing vocabulary, and phonological awareness. The findings are discussed within the context of Clay's theory of reading and support early intervention as an effective means in helping at-risk readers overcome their reading difficulties.

115. Effects of Beer, Wine, and Liquor in Coronary Deaths

Abstract

For a series of 568 married men who died of coronary heart disease and an equal number of matched control subjects, information was collected on a large number of variables, including daily alcohol consumption classified by type of beverage, namely, beer, wine, or liquor. Daily consumption of small to moderate amounts of alcohol (2 oz [59.2 mL] or less daily) was inversely related to coronary death. This inverse relation was present in both crude and adjusted matched-pair analyses and was similar for each type of alcohol, as indicated by adjusted relative risks of 0.3 for beer, 0.3 for wine, and 0.2 for liquor. In contrast, for heavy drinking, there was no association with coronary death in either crude or adjusted analyses.(JAMA 242:1973-1974, 1979)

Abstract

A functional approach provides a framework for identifying psychological and behavioral aspects associated with decision-making, experiences, and consequences. The functional approach to volunteerism suggests that different people, or sub-populations, may actually be motivated to serve based upon individual and varying personal, social, and psychological functions. The purpose of the study was to investigate any motivational differences or similarities between adults living in high at-risk and low at-risk communities with regard to volunteerism. High and low at-risk communities were identified by the seven community at-risk indicators suggested by the Carnegie Council on Adolescents. Those communities with three or less indicators were labeled "low" while those with four or more were considered "high." Adults from two high at-risk and two low at-risk communities completed an abbreviated telephone survey of the Volunteer Functions Inventory (VFI). The VFI assesses six major motive areas, or functions, for volunteering. The functions are Social, Value, Understanding, Protective, Esteem, and Career. The results revealed some similarities and differences between the two community groupings. There was no significant difference between the populations with regard to the Values and Understanding functions. Low at-risk residents scored significantly higher in terms of being motivated by the stipends factor of the Career Function.

A brief exposure to iodine vapour was used to screen for mutants of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae affected in development. Besides obtaining a large number of asporogenous mutants, two novel mutations were identified that permitted germination of spores to occur in conditions (sporulation medium) in which the wild-type would not germinate. These two mutations were named gdr1 and gdr2 for germination derepressed. Both alter nutritional control of germination, but not the kinetics of germination in glucose-containing medium.

119. Associations Between Australian Pseudoscorpions and Ants

Abstract

The distribution of three species of pseudoscorpions, found under the bark of blue gum Eucalyptus globulus, is closely correlated with the presence of three species of ants. Marachernes bellus is never found on trees without Anonychomyrma sp. near foetens, and Protochelifer victorianus and Paraustrochernes victorianus are more commonly found on trees with Technomyrmex jocosus and/or Tapinoma minutum. The distribution of another pseudoscorpion, Conicochernes sp., is not influenced by the presence of these ants. Observations of the behavior of these pseudoscorpions indicate that at least some species may be specialist predators of ants.

Abstract

Objective The aim of the present study was to identify all evidence about the prevalence and severity of clinically measured caries and periodontal disease in Indigenous adults in Australia published in peer-reviewed journals and to summarise trends over time. In addition, we examined whether the studies investigated associations between putative risk factors and levels of caries and periodontal disease. Methods PubMed was searched in September 2014, with no date limitations, for published peer-reviewed articles reporting the prevalence rates and/or severity of caries and periodontal disease in Indigenous adults living in Australia. Articles were excluded if measurement was not based on clinical assessment and if oral disease was reported only in a specific or targeted sample, and not the general population. Results The search identified 18 papers (reporting on 10 primary studies) that met the inclusion criteria. The studies published clinical data about dental caries and/or periodontal disease in Australian Indigenous adults. The studies reported on oral health for Indigenous adults living in rural (40%), urban (10%) and both urban and rural (50%) locations. Included studies showed that virtually all Indigenous adults living in rural locations had periodontal disease. The data also showed caries prevalence ranged from 46% to 93%. Although 10 studies were identified, the peer-reviewed literature was extremely limited and no published studies were identified that provided statistics for a significant proportion of Australia (Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland or the Australian Capital Territory). There were also inconsistencies in how the data were reported between studies, making comparisons difficult. Conclusions This review highlights a lack of robust and contemporary data to inform the development of policies and programs to address the disparities in oral health in Indigenous populations living in many parts of Australia. What is known about the topic? Many studies report that Indigenous people in Australia have poorer general health compared with non-Indigenous people. What does this paper add? This paper documents the available caries and periodontal disease prevalence and experience for Indigenous adults in Australia published in peer-reviewed journals. It demonstrates significant limitations in the data, including no data in several large Australian jurisdictions, inconsistency with reporting methods and most data available being for Indigenous adults living in rural locations. Therefore, the oral health data available in the peer-reviewed literature do not reflect the situation of all Indigenous people living in Australia. What are the implications for practitioners? It is important for oral health practitioners to have access to current and relevant statistics on the oral health of Indigenous Australians. However, we have highlighted significant evidence gaps for this population group within the peer-reviewed literature and identified the limitations of the available data upon which decisions are currently being made. This paper also identifies ways to capture and report oral health data in the future to enable more meaningful comparisons and relevance for use in policy development.
