The Parker Solar Probe mission launched in 2018 with four instrument suites designed for revolutionary studies of the inner heliosphere. Parker’s current perihelion is about 5.3 million miles from the solar surface. Onboard Parker is the Integrated Science Investigation of the Sun (IS0IS), which has two sensors that, combined, observe energetic electrons from ~25 keV to 6 MeV and ions from ~20 keV to >200 MeV. By traveling so close to the Sun, IS0IS discerns small energetic particle events that are not measurable at 1 AU. IS0IS is studying these energetic particles from a new vantage point in the heliosphere and has already improved our understanding of both particle acceleration and their transport. The origin of ³He bundance enhancements in gradual solar energetic particle (SEP) events remains largely unexplained. Two mechanisms have been suggested: the reacceleration of remnant flare material by coronal mass ejection (CME)-driven shocks in interplanetary space, and concomitant activity in the corona. We explore the first gradual SEP event with enhanced 3He abundance that was observed by Solar Orbiter. The event started on 2020 November 24 and was associated with a relatively fast halo CME. During the event, the spacecraft was at 0.9 au from the Sun. The event-averaged ³He/⁴He abundance ratio is 24 times higher than the coronal or solar wind value, and the timing of the ³He intensity was similar to that of other species. We inspected available imaging, radio observations, and the spacecraft magnetic connection to the CME source. The most probable cause of the enhanced ³He ions remaining from a preceding long period of 3He-rich SEPs on 2020 November 17–23.

This article is an ethnographic account of the Primeiro Comando da Capital’s informal justice. I introduce a key aspect of the ‘debate’, a dispute resolution process, which has not been discussed yet: its selective and fragmented nature. This refines the idea of normative orders and the discussion on how informal justices shape legal pluralism in Latin America. I show that the effect of the PCC’s informal justice on governance should be analysed in the light of the growing disconnection between two dimensions: on the one hand, its transcendent dimension relates to a set of behaviours and performances. It has shaped the city’s code of the street and has a self regulatory effect. On the other hand, the implication of the PCC's members in dispute and arbitration is as selective as is the order of the police or the state. Access to the PCC's institutions depends on individuals’ networks, their behaviours, gatekeepers, and broader political and territorial considerations that are not grasped by approaches in term of norms, criminal governance or legal pluralism. This increasingly selective system of justice led to new perceptions of the PCC in the 2010s and a form of disappointment with the organisation in some deprived communities.

Background: Pooled analyses of randomised controlled trials have shown weight gain (WG) following initiation/switching of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in people living with HIV (PLWHIV) [1,2]. We explored risk factors associated with ≥10% WG/weight loss (WL) in PLWHIV after initiating/switching ART. Materials and methods: Weight data were analysed from treatment-experienced (TE) and treatment-naïve (TN) PLWHIV enrolled in four Gilead-sponsored, post-authorisation, observational HIV cohort studies (2010 to 2020) and who initiated/switched non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI)– or integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI)–based ART. Participants had weight data available at baseline and 10 to 15 months post-baseline. Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for potential risk factors for ≥10% WG/WL at 12 months in participants were estimated using multivariable logistic regression. Results: Two thousand, six hundred and sixty-six participants were included. Median age: 38 (TN)/47 years (TE). Of TE participants, 914/1939 (47%) switched from emtricitabine (F)/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) backbone to F/tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), and 162/1939 (8%) from abacavir (ABC)/lamivudine (3TC) to F/TAF. Two hundred and twenty-nine of 727 (31%) TN participants had ≥10% WG (Table 1). Risk factors for ≥10% WG were F/TAF backbone (vs F/TDF; p < 0.001), low baseline CD4 (vs higher; p = 0.010), and being underweight (vs normal; p= 0.024; Figure 1). Eight of 727 (1%) TN participants had ≥10% WL. No significant risk factors for ≥10% WL were identified. Four hundred and fifty-one of 1939 (23%) TE participants had ≥10% WG (Table 1). Risk factors for ≥10% WG were INSTI-based ART (vs NNRTI; p = 0.029), F/TAF backbone (vs F/TDF; p < 0.001), being female (vs male; p = 0.002), switching from F/TDF to F/TAF (vs no switch; p = 0.001), being underweight (vs normal; p < 0.001), and having comorbidities associated with obesity (vs not; p = 0.046). Forty of 1939 (2%) TE participants had ≥10% WL. Only comedications associated with WL were predictors for ≥10% WL (OR 2.73 [95% CI 1.02 to 7.31]; p = 0.046). Conclusions: After initiating ART, WG was associated with F/TAF backbone, low baseline CD4 count, and being underweight in TN participants. In TE participants, WG was associated with INSTI-based ART, F/TAF backbone, switching from F/TDF to F/TAF, being female, and being underweight at baseline. Findings are consistent with the documented WG suppressive effect of F/TDF [3-6]. These data cannot determine the contribution of F/TAF to WG beyond the absence of the F/TDF WG suppressive effect. Background. Previous studies have reported comorbid disease, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic cardiac and renal disease, malignancy, HIV, tuberculosis (TB) and obesity, to be associated with COVID‑19 mortality. National demographic surveys have reported a high proportion of undiagnosed and untreated comorbid disease in South Africa (SA).Objectives. To determine the number of individuals with previously undiagnosed HIV, TB and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among patients hospitalised with COVID‑19, and the level of medical control of these chronic diseases.Methods. We conducted a sentinel surveillance study to collect enhanced data on HIV, TB and NCDs among individuals with COVID‑19 admitted to 16 secondary-level public hospitals in six of the nine provinces of SA. Trained surveillance officers approached all patients who met the surveillance case definition for inclusion in the study, and consenting patients were enrolled. The data collection instrument included questions on past medical history to determine the self-reported presence of comorbidities. The results of clinical and laboratory testing introduced as part of routine clinical care for hospitalised COVID‑19 patients were collected for the study, to objectively determine the presence of hypertension, diabetes, HIV and TB and the levels of control of diabetes and HIV.Results. On self-reported history, the most prevalent comorbidities were hypertension (n=1 658; 51.5%), diabetes (n=855; 26.6%) and HIV (n=603; 18.7%). The prevalence of self-reported active TB was 3.1%, and that of previous TB 5.5%. There were 1 254 patients admitted with COVID‑19 (39.0%) who met the body mass index criteria for obesity. On clinical and laboratory testing, 87 patients were newly diagnosed with HIV, 29 with TB, 215 with diabetes and 40 with hypertension during their COVID‑19 admission. There were 151/521 patients living with HIV (29.0%) with a viral load >1 000 copies/mL and 309/570 (54.2%) with a CD4 count

During his first term, French President Emmanuel Macron sought to revitalize his country’s diplomatic outreach to countries throughout Africa. Some aspects of this pivot were designed to more directly address the legacy of French colonialism in Francophone countries. He also sensed that the growing stature of non-Western powers like China has given African counterparts greater latitude to pursue ties amid heightened diplomatic competition among a host of other countries both in Europe and elsewhere. In pursuing this strategy, Macron has sought to promote a vision of French diplomacy with Africa through greater foreign aid and more robust people-to-people ties grounded in a spirit of partnerships between equals. While Macron’s efforts have created an opening for renewed relationships, this pivot has not been as seamless as he had hoped. Bureaucratic inertia and stovepiping in French foreign policy circles have at times meant that implementation of these policies has lagged. In certain cases, Macron’s own nationalistic appeals during his recent reelection bid have appeared to undercut his attempts to make amends for France’s troubling colonial history. Meanwhile the French president’s attempts to deepen economic, people-to-people, and security ties in more equitable ways have fallen short of lofty expectations, with past practices proving harder than expected to jettison. For Macron’s ambitions for French relations with African countries to keep their momentum, the president and his team must take an earnest look at what has worked well and what can still be improved.

Si les confraternités nigérianes occupent une place croissante dans les médias au nom de la menace criminelle qu’elles représentent, elles n’ont fait l’objet d’aucun travail de recherche de terrain au Nigeria ni en Europe. Cette médiatisation alimente une confusion croissante entre les catégorisations juridicopolicières qui sont utilisées pour les définir et les pratiques et discours panafricains, de solidarité ou d’émancipation, qu’elles mettent en avant. L’approche socio-historique développée dans cette étude permet de mettre en perspective l’expansion globale des confraternités depuis les années 2000, et de proposer un autre regard sur le rôle de ces sociétés secrètes et leur inscription dans des économies politiques et des territoires différents. En Europe, les confraternités sont d’abord des institutions sociales encadrant la jeunesse et les diasporas. Elles assurent la reproduction du pouvoir des élites traditionnelles et politiques à l’étranger par la captation des rentes liées aux migrations (remittances), et jouent donc un rôle clé dans la production d’une forme de mondialisation de la société nigériane par le bas, participant à l’implantation des institutions morales et sociales du sud du pays en Europe. Derrière un discours d’empowerment et de solidarité, les confraternités sont ainsi un réseau transnational qui perpétue un ordre conservateur, une hiérarchie sociale et des inégalités qu’elles contribuent à naturaliser.

Objectives: We aimed to compare COVID-19 outcomes in the Omicron-driven fourth wave with prior waves in the Western Cape, the contribution of undiagnosed prior infection to differences in outcomes in a context of high seroprevalence due to prior infection, and whether protection against severe disease conferred by prior infection and/or vaccination was maintained. Methods: In this cohort study, we included public sector patients aged ≥20 years with a laboratory confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis between 14 November-11 December 2021 (wave four) and equivalent prior wave periods. We compared the risk between waves of the following outcomes using Cox regression: death, severe hospitalization or death and any hospitalization or death (all ≤14 days after diagnosis) adjusted for age, sex, comorbidities, geography, vaccination and prior infection. Results: We included 5,144 patients from wave four and 11,609 from prior waves. Risk of all outcomes was lower in wave four compared to the Delta-driven wave three (adjusted Hazard Ratio (aHR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] for death 0.27 [0.19; 0.38]. Risk reduction was lower when adjusting for vaccination and prior diagnosed infection (aHR:0.41, 95% CI: 0.29; 0.59) and reduced further when accounting for unascertained prior infections (aHR: 0.72). Vaccine protection was maintained in wave four (aHR for outcome of death: 0.24; 95% CI: 0.10; 0.58). Conclusions: In the Omicron-driven wave, severe COVID-19 outcomes were reduced mostly due to protection conferred by prior infection and/or vaccination, but intrinsically reduced virulence may account for an approximately 25% reduced risk of severe hospitalization or death compared to Delta.
