Abstract

Six of the world's largest accounting firms are helping the former communist countries in Eastern Europe and the newly established Commonwealth of Independent States manage their economic problems including bankruptcy, liquidation and privatization. These firms face various risks which can result from unstable governments, faulty legislation and civil war. However, they are able to convince their clients that despite the risks, financial crisis can be managed effectively.

105. Parental Identification, Traditionality, and Identity Status in Adolescent Females.

Abstract

One of the major developmental tasks of adolescence is establishing a unified self-concept, or identity. Four identity statuses (conceptualized by J. E. Marcia as identity achievement, foreclosure, identity diffused and moratorium) are related to (1) the presence or absence of crisis, and (2) a resulting commitment to goals. To examine the relationship between parental identification, traditionality, and identity status in females, 55 college women participated in identity status interviews and completed the Index of Sex Role Questionnaire and the Parental Identification Protocol. An analysis of the results showed that foreclosure subjects ranked highest on both measures of traditionality, while identity achieved women ranked last. Women in moratorium ranked highest in mother identification, followed by identity achieved, foreclosure, and identity diffusion subjects. There was no relationship between mother identification and traditionality, suggesting that these are separate and distinct concepts. Finally, there was a significant relationship between identity achieved and foreclosure subjects' perceptions of their traditionality, suggesting that identity formation through achievment or foreclosure sharpens self-perceptions. The findings suggest that women who have passed through crises become nontraditional in their orientation to work and family, in contrast to women who have accepted a parental or societally-chosen identity who adopt a traditional orientation. Abstract

Defective immune homeostasis in the balance between FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs) and effector T cells is a likely contributing factor in the loss of self-tolerance observed in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Given the importance of interleukin-2 (IL-2) signaling in the generation and function of Tregs, observations that polymorphisms in genes in the IL-2 pathway associate with T1D and that some individuals with T1D exhibit reduced IL-2 signaling indicate that impairment of this pathway may play a role in Treg dysfunction and the pathogenesis of T1D. Here, we have examined IL-2 sensitivity in CD4+ T-cell subsets in 70 individuals with long-standing T1D, allowing us to investigate the effect of low IL-2 sensitivity on Treg frequency and function. IL-2 responsiveness, measured by STAT5a phosphorylation, was a very stable phenotype within individuals but exhibited considerable interindividual variation and was influenced by T1D-associated PTPN2 gene polymorphisms. Tregs from individuals with lower IL-2 signaling were reduced in frequency, were less able to maintain expression of FOXP3 under limiting concentrations of IL-2, and displayed reduced suppressor function. These results suggest that reduced IL-2 signaling may be used to identify patients with the highest Treg dysfunction and who may benefit most from IL-2 immunotherapy.
