The rise of apps and mobile devices has opened the door to small, dedicated software programs that are focused on singular tasks. From the author's perspective as head of digital access and web service manager at Montana State University, these apps offered an opportunity to build a focused digital service aimed at allowing someone to enter a search for a title or subject, match an item, and then receive a list of suggested related items. In essence, it would be a user-mediated reader's advisory. The result was BookMeUp, a web app prototype incorporating many of the emerging features of HTML5 to work across smartphone and tablet platforms as well as on the traditional desktop. Montana State University (MSU) Libraries (where the authors serve as web services librarian and digital initiatives librarian, respectively) is perhaps unique because it has no current periodicals room due to lack of space. As a result, finding current journals for research is difficult for its patrons, who do not always know how or where to locate them. To answer this lack of a physical journal browsing environment, the authors developed a web-based journal TOC distribution system that enabled the delivery of journal articles to users' desktops. The current beta version of their TOC service is linked from their journals page at www.lib.montana.edu/journals. An individual sample of the TOC service is available at www.lib.montana.edu/toc/lis. Their system uses the common XML feed formats Atom and RSS, the Google AJAX Feed API, and some JavaScript (or server-side PHP) working within the Ajax framework to deliver targeted journal content to their users as a series of XHTML pages. The goal was a browsable web environment that enabled article-level access to the multiple journal packages available from MSU Libraries. How the authors were able to customize the MSU Libraries TOC service is detailed, the lessons they learned are enumerated, and the future of the TOC project is discussed.

At their core, XML feeds are content-delivery vehicles. This fact has not always been highlighted in library conversations surrounding RSS and ATOM. The authors have looked to extend the conversation by offering a proof of concept application using RSS as a means to deliver all types of library data: PDFs, docs, images, video--to people where and when they need it. The model of distribution enabled by Web feeds gives libraries a new option in sprinkling our content into all corners of the Web. (Contains 7 figures.)

The author of this article suggests that to refresh Web pages and online library catalogs in a more pleasing way, Ajax, an acronym for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML, should be used. Ajax is the way to use Web technologies that work together to refresh sections of Web pages to allow almost instant responses to user input. This article describes how Ajax works and its applications. The core of the article shows how to build a very simple Ajax application. It walks the reader through understanding code, the building blocks that make an Ajax application go. The article demonstrates how to set up the interface, work with JavaScript using the XMLHttp Request Object, communicating the request status, putting it all together using the DOM (Document Object Model), and applying CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for a nice display.

In this work we study the long time behavior of nonlinear stochastic functional-differential equations in Hilbert spaces. In particular, we start with establishing the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions. We proceed with deriving a priory uniform in time bounds for the solutions in the appropriate Hilbert spaces. These bounds enable us to establish the existence of invariant measure based on Krylov-Bogoliubov theorem on the tightness of the family of measures. Finally, under certain assumptions on nonlinearities, we establish the uniqueness of invariant measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Mucormycosis is a rare angioinvasive infection caused by filamentous fungi with a high lethality among the immunocompromised. In healthy people, the innate immune system is sufficient to prevent infection. The exception to this is deep tissue exposure seen during trauma. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the epidemiology of mucormycosis using a statewide population-based data set. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study of all hospital admissions for mucormycosis within the state of Florida from 1997 through the beginning of 2020. A distribution map was created to evaluate for geographic variation. Botanical growth zones, based on plant hardiness, used by state environmental agencies and landscapers were also used to detect possible patterns based on climate conditions throughout Florida. A multivariable regression analysis was performed to account for confounders and limit bias. Results: A total of 1190 patients were identified for mucormycosis infection. Only 86 of these patients were admitted for trauma. Cutaneous infections were more prevalent among trauma patients while non-trauma patients had more pulmonary infections (P =.04). Trauma patients with infection tended to be younger and less likely to suffer from comorbidities such as immunosuppression (36% vs 46%, P =.07) and diabetes (22.1% vs 47.1%, P ≤.0001) as compared to their non-trauma counterparts. Mortality was similar with 17.8% for non-trauma patients and 15.1% for traumatized patients (AOR.80 [.42, 1.52]). Length of stay was longer for trauma patients (37.3 vs 23.0, P <.0001). Infections were less prominent in plant hardiness Zone 9 and Zone 10 as compared to Zone 8 (AOR.71 [.61,.82]; AOR.54 [.46,.64], respectively). Conclusion: Trauma patients who develop infection from mucormycosis are at high risk of death despite being a younger and healthier population. Mucormycosis infections were primarily soft tissue based among trauma patients. These infections are more prevalent in colder regions within Florida. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
