Abstract

Mechanochemistry is a very interesting branch of chemistry for its potentiality in processes of environmental relevance. In this work, an innovative application has been proposed, namely to mechanochemically treat a blast furnace slag to be reused as a low-cost adsorbent. In particular, the adsorptive properties of this industrial waste towards methylene blue present in aqueous solutions have been considered. To this end, the slag has been treated in a planetary mill at different charge ratios, rotational speeds and milling times, and then characterized by laser granulometry, porosimetric and XRD analyses. These investigations allowed to shed light on the interrelationships between milling conditions and slag physico-chemical characteristics, and to choose the most interesting samples to submit to the following adsorption equilibrium and kinetic tests. These runs have been conducted at different dye initial concentration and adsorption times, and results have been interpreted according to the previously-analyzed slag characteristics. Furthermore, adsorption data have been post-processed to give values for the equilibrium and kinetic constants, the removal efficiency and the characteristic adsorption times.

Abstract

In 2015 total world cement manufacture was estimated at 4.6 billion tons and the CO2 emissions from cement plants were equal to approximately 3.7 billion metric tons, representing about 7% of the global anthropogenic emissions. The utilization of innovative cements and/or supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) represent a powerful tool for both reducing the CO2 footprint and producing more durable environmentally friendly materials. This paper investigates the possibility of using clayey reservoir sediments (RSs) calcined at 830°C as SCMs in a blended Portland cement; this binder, together with a reference one containing natural pozzolan, was submitted to hydration and mechanical tests for curing times ranging from 2 to 56 days. It has been found that RSs are very interesting SCMs inasmuch as their utilization, allowing a clinker dilution, leads to both CO2 emission decrease and energy saving; furthermore, the hydration behaviour and the mechanical properties of the blended cement were positively affected by the RSs addition. 129. BREAKAGE OF A ZNN NAIL IN AN ACTIVE ELDERLY FEMALE: A CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW.

Abstract

Trochanteric fractures are common in elderly patients with osteoporosis and are surgically treated to facilitate early rehabilitation and to prevent lodging-related comorbidities. Nonunion and hardware breakage of intertrochanteric hip fractures is a relatively rare occurrence resulting from an incorrect surgical procedure. We present a case of ZNN nail breakage caused by fatigue of an unstable trochanteric fracture in a very active elderly female. An 84 year-old woman was treated with a long, pertrochanteric femoral nail. Six months after surgery, she returned to the emergency department due to the ruptured nail. The patient underwent hemiarthroplasty with a stem revision and, after removing the nail, was stabilized with a trochanteric gripping plate and rims. Long-term results assessed with the Harris Hip Score and the Oxford Hip Score were excellent. The patient's quality of life improved greatly. Our experience confirms that total hip hemiarthroplasty is a satisfactory revision procedure after failed treatment of an intertrochanteric fracture in elderly patients with poor bone stock and high functional demands in daily activities. Abstract

This paper reports results related to early age temperature and shrinkage measurements by means fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), which were embedded in geopolymer matrices. The sensors were properly packaged in order to discriminate between different shrinkage behavior and temperature development. Geopolymer systems based on metakaolin were investigated, which dealt with different commercial aluminosilicate precursors and siliceous filler contents. The proposed measuring system will allow us to control, in a very accurate way, the early age phases of the binding systems made by metakaolin geopolymer. A series of experiments were conducted on different compositions; moreover, rheological issues related to the proposed experimental method were also assessed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
