112. Hydrophobic hollow fiber composite membranes based on hexadecyl-modified SiO2nanoparticles for toluene separation

Abstract

In this work, we present a cost-effective and affordable inorganic silicon material known as nano-SiO2. The purpose of this work is to enhance the performance of toluene separation by utilizing modified-SiO2/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanocomposite membranes. To achieve this, we successfully grafted hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS) onto the surface of nano-SiO2and systematically investigated the impact of SiO2concentration on the separation efficiency. Various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and water contact angle (WCA) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum analyses were employed to analyze the surface morphology, hydrophobic properties, and functional groups of modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) hollow fiber membranes. In brief, 400 ppm of each volatile organic compound (toluene) was injected into the module as a feed for 10 min at 25 °C under a pressure of 1 bar at room temperature. Gases in the retentate were analyzed by GC/FID in purge and trap analyzers at 250 °C. The VOCs were sampled using an Automated Purge & Trap Sampler. After comparing the chromatographic data to the reference compounds, the adsorption capacity was calculated to identify residual VOCs collected after separation by the nanocomposite membrane as present in the feed. Among the tested modules, 0.2HPM (hollow fiber membranes coated with 20 wt% PDMS and 0.2 wt% hexadecyl-modified SiO2) exhibited the highest toluene removal efficiency of 95.7 % under conditions of 400 mL/min flow rate and 1 bar pressure. The findings of this study provide valuable insight into the hydrophobic modification of nano-SiO2and its potential application as a membrane-based separation technique.

Abstract

Rasagiline is a monoamine oxidase type B inhibitor that possesses no amphetamine-like properties, and provides symptomatic relief in early and late stages of Parkinson's disease (PD). Data in animal models of PD suggest that chronic administration of rasagiline is associated with structural changes in the substantia nigra, and raise the question whether the structure and function of the basal ganglia could be different in PD patients treated chronically with rasagiline as compared with PD patients not treated with rasagiline. Here, we performed a retrospective cross-sectional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study at 3 T that investigated nigrostriatal function and structure in PD patients who had taken rasagiline before testing (∼8 months), PD who had not taken rasagiline before testing, and age-matched controls. The two PD groups were selected a priori to not differ significantly in age, sex, disease duration, severity of symptoms, cognitive status, and total levodopa equivalent daily dose of medication. We evaluated percent signal change in the posterior putamen during force production using functional MRI, free-water in the posterior substantia nigra using diffusion MRI, and performance on a bimanual coordination task using a pegboard test. All patients were tested after overnight withdrawal from antiparkinsonian medication. The rasagiline group had greater percent signal change in the posterior putamen, less free-water in the posterior substantia nigra, and better performance on the coordination task than the group not taking rasagiline. 129. Preparation of mechanically enhanced supramolecular carbon nanotube (CNT) film using a water-soluble p–pbonding linker

Abstract

Mechanically enhanced supramolecular carbon nanotube (CNT) films were prepared in water by employing the p-electron-rich phenyl, naphthalenyl, and pyrenyl end-functionalized polyethylene oxides (PEOs) as supramolecular linkers, followed by vacuum filtration. Among them, the supramolecular CNT film produced by the pyrenyl end-functionalized PEO (PEO-Py) exhibited the highest mechanical strength, which was?~?1.5–2 times higher than that of the CNT films produced using the typical dispersant, Triton X-100, although the functionality of PEO-Py was lower than that prepared using other linkers, and the content of PEO-Py in the CNT films was lower than that obtained using Triton X-100. Fluorescence and UV–Vis spectroscopy demonstrated that the improved mechanical properties of the supramolecular CNT film result from the formation of p–pinteractions between the CNT and the pyrene moieties of the PEO-Py linker. Finally, the supramolecular CNT film exhibited a 40–50 dB electromagnetic shielding efficiency through hybridization with silver nanowires.

Abstract

Bio-based polyurethane is synthesized from biodegradable polycaprolactone, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol. The bio-based polyurethane is blended with branched polyethyleneimine by a solution casting method and further treated with glutaraldehyde. From nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, leaching tests and contact angle measurements, it was found that a semi-interpenetrating polymer network structure is induced by the glutaraldehyde treatment of the bio-based polyurethane/branched polyethyleneimine blend film, which resulting from the crosslinking of branched polyethyleneimine by imine bonds formed from the amine-aldehyde reaction between branched polyethyleneimine and glutaraldehyde. In addition, the glass transition temperature, Young's modulus and the shape retention results show that the mechanical strength of bio-based polyurethane, which is weakened by the plasticizing effect of branched polyethyleneimine, is restored by the formation of the semi-interpenetrating network structure. We found that the bio-based polyurethane/branched polyethyleneimine with a semi-interpenetrating network shows a much higher affinity for Acid Red 4 than bio-based polyurethane, and the wet fastness of dye is significantly improved by the formation of the semi-interpenetrating network. 131. Cortical dynamics within and between parietal and motor cortex in essential tremor.

Abstract

Background: Evidence from functional imaging in essential tremor suggests that activity within parietal and motor cortices may be associated with worsening of tremor at increased visual feedback.Objectives: Examine how cortical oscillations within these regions and the connectivity between these regions is associated with worsening of tremor in essential tremor in response to high visual feedback.Method: The study included 24 essential tremor participants and 17 controls. We measured cortical activity and tremor magnitude at low and high feedback conditions. Cortical activity was measured using high-density electroencephalogram and isolated using source localization.Results: Changes in power across feedback in the 4-12 Hz and 12-30 Hz bands were reduced within the contralateral motor cortex of essential tremor patients compared to controls. The 12-30 Hz bidirectional connectivity between the parietal and contralateral motor cortex was decreased in essential tremor patients. Worsening of tremor from low to high visual feedback was associated with 4-12 Hz activity in contralateral motor cortex. The greatest separation between groups was found when using the difference of the contralateral motor cortex activity at high and low feedback, rather than either feedback condition alone.Conclusion: Our findings provide new evidence that tremor in essential tremor is associated with reduced power across feedback in the motor cortex and reduced connectivity between the parietal and motor cortices. Combined with previous work on the cerebellar-thalamo-cortical motor circuit, our findings suggest that the network level disturbances associated with essential tremor extend to the cortico-cortical pathway between the parietal cortex and motor cortex. © 2018 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. Abstract

Abstract: The heat transfer in the turbocharger occurs due to the temperature difference between the exhaust gas and intake air, coolant, and oil. This heat transfer causes the efficiency of the compressor and turbine to be distorted, which is known to be exacerbated during low rotational speeds. Thus, this study proposes a method to mitigate the distortion of the test result data caused by heat transfer in the turbocharger. With this method, the representative compressor temperature is defined and the heat transfer rate of the compressor is calculated by considering the effect of the oil and turbine inlet temperatures at low rotation speeds, when the cold and the hot gas test are simultaneously performed. The correction of compressor efficiency, depending on the turbine inlet temperature, was performed through both hot and cold gas tests and the results showed a maximum of 16% error prior to correction and a maximum of 3% error after the correction. In addition, it shows that it is possible to correct the efficiency distortion of the turbocharger by heat transfer by correcting to the combined turbine efficiency based on the corrected compressor efficiency.
