Aims The relationship between mobile phone use for making or receiving calls and hypertension risk remains uncertain. We aimed to examine the associations of mobile phone use for making or receiving calls and the use frequency with new-onset hypertension in the general population, using data from the UK Biobank. Methods and results A total of 212 046 participants without prior hypertension in the UK Biobank were included. Participants who have been using a mobile phone at least once per week to make or receive calls were defined as mobile phone users. The primary outcome was new-onset hypertension. During a median follow-up of 12.0 years, 13 984 participants developed new-onset hypertension. Compared with mobile phone non-users, a significantly higher risk of new-onset hypertension was found in mobile phone users [hazards ratio (HR), 1.07; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01–1.12]. Among mobile phone users, compared with those with a weekly usage time of mobile phones for making or receiving calls 6 h (HR, 1.25; 95%CI: 1.13–1.39) (P for trend Conclusions Mobile phone use for making or receiving calls was significantly associated with a higher risk of new-onset hypertension, especially among high-frequency users.

At 26.5°N in the North Atlantic, a continuous transbasin observational array has been established since 2004 to detect the strength of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. The observational record shows that the subtropical Atlantic meridional overturning circulation has weakened by 2.5 ± 1.5 Sv (as mean ± 95% interval; 1 Sv ≡ 106 m3 s−1) since 2008 compared to the initial 4-yr average. Strengthening of the upper southward geostrophic transport (with a 2.6 ± 1.6 Sv southward increase) derived from thermal wind dominates this Atlantic meridional overturning circulation decline. We decompose the geostrophic transport into its temperature and salinity components to compare their contributions to the transport variability. The contributions of temperature and salinity components to the southward geostrophic transport strengthening are 1.0 ± 2.5 and 1.6 ± 1.3 Sv, respectively. The variation of salinity component is significant at the 95% confidence level, while the temperature component’s variation is not. This result highlights the vital role that salinity plays in the subtropical Atlantic meridional overturning circulation variability, which has been overlooked in previous studies. We further analyze the geostrophic transport variations and their temperature and salinity components arising from different water masses, which shows that a warming signal in Labrador Sea Water and a freshening signal in Nordic Sea Water are two prominent sources of the geostrophic transport increase. Comparison of the temperature and salinity records of the 26.5°N array with the upstream records from repeated hydrographic sections across the Labrador Sea suggests that these thermohaline signals may be exported from the subpolar Atlantic via the deep western boundary current.

N6-methyladenosine (m6A), the most abundant modification in mRNAs, has been defined as a crucial modulator in the progression of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Identification of the key regulators of m6A modifications in AML could provide further insights into AML biology and uncover more effective therapeutic strategies for patients with AML. Here, we report overexpression of YTHDF1, an m6A reader protein, in human AML samples at the protein level with enrichment in leukemia stem cells (LSC). Whereas YTHDF1 was dispensable for normal hematopoiesis in mice, depletion of YTHDF1 attenuated self-renewal, proliferation, and leukemic capacity of primary human and mouse AML cells in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, YTHDF1 promoted the translation of cyclin E2 in an m6A-dependent manner. Structure-based virtual screening of FDA-approved drugs identified tegaserod as a potential YTHDF1 inhibitor. Tegaserod blocked the direct binding of YTHDF1 with m6A-modified mRNAs and inhibited YTHDF1-regulated cyclin E2 translation. Moreover, tegaserod reduced the viability of patient-derived AML cells in vitro and prolonged survival in patient-derived xenograft models. Together, our study defines YTHDF1 as an integral regulator of AML progression by regulating the expression of m6A-modified mRNAs, which might serve as a potential therapeutic target for AML.Significance:The m6A reader YTHDF1 is required for progression of acute myelogenous leukemia and can be targeted with the FDA-approved drug tegaserod to suppress leukemia growth.

The association between dietary vitamin E intake and the risk of new-onset hypertension remains unknown. We aimed to evaluate the prospective relationship of dietary vitamin E intake with new-onset hypertension in the general Chinese population. A total of 12,177 adults without hypertension at baseline were enrolled from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Dietary intake was measured by 3 consecutive 24 h dietary recalls at the individual level in combination with a weighing inventory taken over the same 3 days at the household level. The study outcome was new-onset hypertension, defined as a systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mmHg, a diagnosis by a physician, or the use of antihypertensive treatment during follow-up. During a median follow-up duration of 6.1 years, 4269 participants developed new-onset hypertension. Overall, the association between dietary vitamin E intake and new-onset hypertension followed a reverse J-shaped curve (P for nonlinearity0.001). Accordingly, when dietary vitamin E intake was assessed by quintiles, significantly higher risks of new-onset hypertension were found among participants in the first quintile (18.75 mg/d: adjusted HR, 1.40; 95% CI, 1.29-1.52) and the fifth quintile (≥40.53 mg/d: adjusted HR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.09-1.29) compared with those in the second-fourth quintiles (18.75 to40.53 mg/d). Further adjustments for vitamin A, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin C, zinc, copper, and selenium intake or the intake of vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, nuts, and vegetable oils did not substantially change the results. In conclusion, there was a reverse J-shaped association between dietary vitamin E intake and new-onset hypertension in general Chinese adults.

Internal waves close to the seafloor of abyssal oceans are the key energy suppliers driving near-bottom mixing and the upwelling branches of meridional overturning circulation, but their spatiotemporal variability and intrinsic mechanisms remain largely unclear. In this study, measurements from 10 long-term moorings were used to investigate the internal wave activities in the abyssal South China Sea, which is an important upwelling zone. Strong near-inertial internal waves (NIWs) with current velocity pulses exceeding 5 cm s−1 were observed to dominate the near-bottom internal wave field at approximately 14°N. These abyssal NIWs were phase-coupled with diurnal internal tides (D1), and both displayed common seasonal variations that were larger in winter and summer, providing evidence of diurnal parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) near its critical latitudes (CLs). Emitted from the bottom, near-inertial kinetic energy rapidly decreased by one order of magnitude from depths of ∼120 to ∼620 m above the bottom. Near rough topographies, the abyssal PSI was shifted poleward to approximately 14.8°N by negative relative vorticities of passing anticyclonic eddies or topographic Rossby waves. Compared with flat topography, PSI near rough topography was significantly promoted by topographic-localized strong D1 with high-mode structures, creating abyssal NIW bursts. Bottom-reaching shipboard conductivity–temperature–depth profiles revealed that the bottom mixed layers became much thicker when approaching CLs, suggesting that abyssal PSI potentially accelerates the ventilation and upwelling of bottom water. The observational results presented here illustrate notable spatiotemporal variations in abyssal NIWs regulated by PSI and call for consideration of PSI to better understand near-bottom mixing and upwelling.

Purpose. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) were applied to speculate the altered structural and functional abnormalities within the hippocampus in classical trigeminal neuralgia (CTN) patients by detecting the alteration of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), fractional anisotropy (FA), and regional homogeneity (ReHo). Patients and Methods. Multimodal MRI dataset (DTI and fMRI) and clinical indices (pain and neuropsychological scores) were collected in 27 CTN patients and 27 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HC). Two independent-sample t-tests were performed to compare the ADC, FA, and ReHo values in hippocampus areas between CTN patients and HC. Correlation analyses were applied between all the DTI and fMRI parameters within the hippocampus and the VAS (visual analog scale), MoCA (Montreal cognitive assessment), and CDR (clinical dementia rating) scores. Results. CTN patients showed a significantly increased FA values in the right hippocampus (t = 2.387, P = 0.021 ) and increased ReHo values in the right hippocampus head (voxel P < 0.001 , cluster P < 0.05 , FDR correction) compared with HC. A positively significant correlation was observed between the ReHo values and MOCA scores in the right hippocampus head; FA values were also positively correlated with MOCA scores in the right hippocampus. Conclusion. CTN patients demonstrated an abnormality of structures and functions in the hippocampus, which may help to provide novel insights into the neuropathologic change related to the pain-related dysfunction of CTN.
