Resistive crossbar array for in-memory computing suffers from high static power and sneak-path current. To address these issues, we proposed a ferroelectric HfxZr1-xO2 (HZO) based capacitive crossbar array for in-memory computing. The non-volatile capacitive synapse allows the minimization of both sneak-path current and steady-state power consumption. Furthermore, since the capacitive synapse is read at DC 0V, we claim that this architecture allows read-disturbance-free and energy-efficient in-memory computing. In this paper, we first introduce the device properties of the non-volatile capacitor and their underlying physical mechanism. Moving to array-level analysis, we obtain the optimal ratios between reference and ferroelectric capacitors (Cref/CFE) for the maximum output swing to occur. Vacuum freeze-drying is a promising technology widely used in pharmaceuticals. Preparing products with prebuilt porosity has attracted considerable attention due to its potential in shortening process duration. However, the design space for the primary drying of initially unsaturated products remains unclear. A novel index, average power, was proposed in this paper to represents the collapse risk. And a multiphase model was employed in this paper to build the design space for the products with initial voids. The simulation results show that both the drying time and average power show higher sensitivity to the temperature variation than pressure. In addition, the initial saturation has significant impacts on the design space, with small initial saturation resulting in vast design space and vice versa, which implies that small initial saturation is more beneficial for the actual production. This paper would be helpful for the development of freeze-drying.

Calmodulin-like (CML) proteins represent a diverse family of protein in plants, and play significant roles in biotic and abiotic stress responses. However, the involvement of citrus CMLs in plant responses to drought stress (abiotic stress) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) colonization remain relatively unknown. We characterized the citrus CML genes by analyzing the EF-hand domains and a genome-wide search, and identified a total of 38 such genes, distributed across at least nine chromosomes. Six tandem duplication clusters were observed in the CsCMLs, and 12 CsCMLs exhibited syntenic relationships with Arabidopsis thaliana CMLs. Gene expression analysis showed that 29 CsCMLs were expressed in the roots, and exhibited differential expression patterns. The regulation of CsCMLs expression was not consistent with the cis-elements identified in their promoters. CsCML2, 3, and 5 were upregulated in response to drought stress, and AMF colonization repressed the expression of CsCML7, 9, 12, 13,20, 27, 28, and 35,and induced that of CsCML1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 18, 25, 30, 33, and 37. Furthermore, AMF colonization and drought stress exerted a synergistic effect, evident from the enhanced repression of CsCML7, 9, 12, 13, 27, 28, and 35 and enhanced expression of CsCML2, 3, and 5 under AMF colonization and drought stress. The present study provides valuable insights into the CsCML gene family and its responses to AMF colonization and drought stress.

High-entropy (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2)Cx ceramics, with different carbon contents (x=0.55−1), were prepared by spark plasma sintering using powders synthesized via a carbothermal reduction approach. Single-phase, high-entropy (Ti0.2Zr0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2Mo0.2)Cx ceramics could be obtained when using a carbon content of x=0.70−0.85. Combined ZrO2 and Mo-rich carbide phases, or residual graphite, existed in the ceramics due to either a carbon deficiency or excess at x=0.55 and 1, respectively. With the carbon content increased from x=0.70 to x=0.85, the grain size decreased from 4.36 ± 1.55 μm to 2.00 ± 0.91 μm, while the hardness and toughness increased from 23.72 ± 0.26 GPa and 1.69 ± 0.21 MPa·m1/2 to 25.45 ± 0.59 GPa and 2.37 ± 0.17 MPa·m1/2, respectively. This study showed that the microstructure and mechanical properties of high-entropy carbide ceramics could be adjusted by the carbon content. High carbon content is conducive to improving hardness and toughness, as well as reducing grain size.

Background Angiocentric glioma (AG) is a rare, low-grade glioma with slow growth. In 2007, AG was first classified as a solid tumor according to the WHO classification of the central nervous system (WHO class I). The outcome and prognosis of most of the cases are very good, but a few cases with tumor metastasis and disease progression, even death, have been reported. We report a case and systematically analyze previous literature to increase our understanding of the disease and determine the factors that may affect disease progression to make prognostic judgments. Case presentation A young male patient complained of a 3-year history of epilepsy. Anti-epileptic drug treatment was ineffective. An imaging examination revealed a lesion in the left parietal cortex area. Thus, the lesion was completely resected. The pathological diagnosis was angiocentric glioma. During a follow-up of two years, the patient had epilepsy relief controlled by sodium valproate and a disease-free period. Conclusion AG is an epilepsy-related low-grade glioma that heals after complete resection in most reported cases. However, few reported cases have had disease progression and death. This result may be due to the pathological complexity of the diseased tissue. In addition, AG is usually found to have an MYB–QKI rearrangement on genetic analysis. Due to the small number of reported cases and studies, our understanding and knowledge of this disease are still lacking. The potential malignant changes and prognostic factors need to be verified in more than clinical cases and basic research in the future.

High-entropy (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C ceramics, with different contents (0, 5, 10, and 20 vol.%) of SiC whiskers (SiCw), were fabricated by spark plasma sintering using raw powders synthesized via carbothermal reduction. The application of a uniaxial compaction force led to texture development of the SiCw within the (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C matrix. Fracture toughness increased with the increase in SiCw content, while Vickers hardness remains almost unchanged. The toughness of (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C-20 vol.% SiCw ceramics reached 4.3 ± 0.3 MPa∙m1/2, which was approximately 43% higher than that of the monolithic (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C ceramic (3.0 ± 0.2 MPa∙m1/2). The main toughening mechanisms were attributed to crack deflection, whisker debonding, and whisker pullout.

Layered Aurivillius compound Bi5Ti3CrO15 has been synthesized by a hydrothermal method for the application as a photocatalyst to liberate hydrogen from water. Bi5Ti3CrO15 owns a narrow band gap (Eg ~2.46 eV) and shows stable photocatalytic activity under both full range (λ ≥250 nm) and visible light illumination (λ ≥420 nm). A short hydrothermal reaction time is critical to achieve high photocatalytic activity as defects such as Cr6+ and Bi5+ can be avoided. An AQE as high as 3.66% at 420 nm ± 20 nm has been recorded, warranting promising application in the field of solar energy conversions. DFT calculation reveals the important role of Cr3+cations for visible light sensitivity of Bi5Ti3CrO15.

Temozolomide (TMZ) is the only clinical first-line chemotherapy drug for malignant glioma up to present. Due to poor aqueous solubility and toxic effects, TMZ is still inefficient and limited for clinical glioma treatment.Methods: UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticle is a zirconium-based framework, constructed by Zr and 2-amino-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (BDC-NH2) with octahedral microporous structure, which can be decomposed by the body into an ionic form to discharge. We prepared the nanoscale metal-organic framework (MOF) of UiO-66-NH2 to load TMZ for therapy of malignant glioma, TMZ is released from UiO-66-NH2 through a porous structure. The ultrasound accelerates its porous percolation and promotes the rapid dissolution of TMZ through low-frequency oscillations and cavitation effect. The biological safety and antitumor efficacy were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo.Results: The prepared TMZ@MOF exhibited excellent biocompatibility and biosafety due to minimal drug leakage without ultrasound intervention. We further used the flank model of glioblastoma to verify the in vivo therapeutic effect. TMZ@UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposites could be well delivered to the tumour tissue, which led to local enrichment of the TMZ concentration. Furthermore, TMZ@UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposites under ultrasound demonstrated much more efficient inhibition for tumor growth than TMZ@UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposites and TMZ alone. Meanwhile, the bone marrow suppression side effects of TMZ were significantly reduced by TMZ@UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposites.Conclusion: In this work, TMZ@UiO-66-NH2 nanocomposites with ultrasound mediation could effectively improve the killing effect of malignant glioma and decrease TMZ-induced toxicity in normal tissues, demonstrating great potential for the delivery of TMZ in the clinical treatment of malignant gliomas.Keywords: MOF, TMZ, ultrasound glioma

BackgroundDrug repurposing is a fast and effective way to develop drugs for an emerging disease such as COVID-19. The main challenges of effective drug repurposing are the discoveries of the right therapeutic targets and the right drugs for combating the disease.MethodsHere, we present a systematic repurposing approach, combining Homopharma and hierarchal systems biology networks (HiSBiN), to predict 327 therapeutic targets and 21,233 drug-target interactions of 1,592 FDA drugs for COVID-19. Among these multi-target drugs, eight candidates (along with pimozide and valsartan) were tested and methotrexate was identified to affect 14 therapeutic targets suppressing SARS-CoV-2 entry, viral replication, and COVID-19 pathologies. Through the use of in vitro (EC50 = 0.4 μM) and in vivo models, we show that methotrexate is able to inhibit COVID-19 via multiple mechanisms.ResultsOur in vitro studies illustrate that methotrexate can suppress SARS-CoV-2 entry and replication by targeting furin and DHFR of the host, respectively. Additionally, methotrexate inhibits all four SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern. In a Syrian hamster model for COVID-19, methotrexate reduced virus replication, inflammation in the infected lungs. By analysis of transcriptomic analysis of collected samples from hamster lung, we uncovered that neutrophil infiltration and the pathways of innate immune response, adaptive immune response and thrombosis are modulated in the treated animals.ConclusionsWe demonstrate that this systematic repurposing approach is potentially useful to identify pharmaceutical targets, multi-target drugs and regulated pathways for a complex disease. Our findings indicate that methotrexate is established as a promising drug against SARS-CoV-2 variants and can be used to treat lung damage and inflammation in COVID-19, warranting future evaluation in clinical trials.

Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries were widely used due to their various advantages, but its further application and development have been seriously hindered by the low electrochemical discharge capacity of conventional hydrogen storage alloy electrode. The hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) thin film electrode for Ni-MH battery has been proven to have a dramatic electrochemical capacity. We prepared a-Si:H thin films by a two-step process of rf-sputtering followed by hydrogenation, and investigated the effect of hydrogenation on the structure and electrochemical properties of which as an anode. The maximum discharge capacity of a-Si:H thin film electrode after hydrogenation increases from initial 180 mAh·g−1to 1827 mAh·g−1, which is over tenfold that of as-deposited hydrogen-less a-Si thin film electrode. Then, the preliminary relationships between hydrogen content and electrochemical performance of a-Si:H thin film electrode were analyzed, and several negative factors of electrochemical performance for a-Si:H thin film electrode were proposed.

To scale the ferroelectric random access memory (FeRAM) technology toward 28 nm or beyond, it is critical to develop stacked capacitor (with sufficient surface area) to allow good sense margin for the 1-transistor- 1-capacitor (1T1C) bit cell. Therefore, to enable 3-D integration in back-end-of-line (BEOL) process, it is essential to optimize the fabrication recipes in low-thermal budget ( 50 s) in low temperature (\sim 350 °C), the ferroelectric properties of HZO could be fully manifested. No degradation is shown in the remnant polarization ( ${P}_{r}$ ) under the optimized low-temperature process. Furthermore, the retention/endurance characteristics with different ${P}_{r}$ states were measured to determine the minimally required write voltage. Finally, the SPICE simulation is conducted to evaluate the sense margin of the projected 28-nm 1T1C array with stacked cylindrical capacitors using the measured ${P}_{r}$ drift behavior over time.

Background: Hemorrhagic stroke (HS) is a sudden-onset disease with high mortality and disability rates, and it is crucial to explore the triggers of HS. In this study, we analyzed individual triggers for HS to provide a basis for HS prevention and intervention. Methods: A systematic search of five databases was conducted until December 2022. Studies on HS-related individual triggers conducted using a case-crossover study or self-controlled case series design were included in the descriptive summary and comprehensive evidence synthesis of each trigger. Results: A total of 39 studies were included after the screening, and 32 trigger factor categories were explored for associations. Potential trigger factors for HS were as follows: Antiplatelet (odd ratio (OR), 1.10; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.00–1.21) and anticoagulant (OR, 5.43; 95% CI, 2.04–14.46) medications, mood stabilizers/antipsychotics (OR, 1.33; 95% CI, 1.07–1.65), infections (OR, 2.15; 95% CI, 1.73–2.67), vaccinations (relative risk, 1.11; 95% CI, 1.02–1.21), physical exertion (OR, 2.08; 95% CI, 1.58–2.74), cola consumption (OR, 5.45; 95% CI, 2.76–10.76), sexual activity (OR, 7.49; 95% CI, 2.23–25.22), nose blowing (OR range, 2.40–56.40), defecation (OR, 16.94; 95% CI, 3.40–84.37), and anger (OR, 3.59; 95% CI, 1.56–8.26). No associations were observed with illicit drug use (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 0.52–8.06) or cigarette smoking (OR, 0.81; 95% CI, 0.52–1.24) and HS. Conclusions: Individual triggers, including several medications, infections, vaccinations, and behaviors, may trigger HS onset. Direct control measures for behavioral triggers can play a crucial role in preventing HS. High-risk populations should receive personalized therapies and monitoring measures during the medication treatment to balance the risk of acute HS and the basic diseases.

We updated the experience on percutaneous microwave ablation for renal cell carcinoma with five-center data and long-term follow-up. This retrospective study reviewed the T1N0M0 renal cell carcinoma patients who underwent microwave ablation between April 2006 and December 2019. Clinicopathological and procedural data were collected. Technical effectiveness and complications were assessed, and the Kaplan-Meier method was used for cancer-specific survival, disease-free survival, overall survival, and local neoplastic process analyses. A total of 323 consecutive patients (mean age, 62.9 years ± 14.0) with 371 biopsy-proved tumors (mean diameter, 2.9 cm ± 1.2) were enrolled, and 42.6% of the tumors were located adjacent to collecting system/bowel and technical effectiveness was achieved in 360 (97.0%) tumors. For 275 cT1a patients, during median follow-up time of 66.0 months (IQR, 58.4–73.6), 10-year local neoplastic processes, cancer-specific survival, disease-free survival, and overall survival rates were 1.9%, 87.4%, 71.8, and 67.5%, respectively. For 48 cT1b patients, during the median follow-up time of 30.4 months (IQR, 17.7–44.8), 5-year local tumor progression, cancer-specific survival, disease-free survival, and overall survival rates were 11.3%, 91.4%, 69.1, and 89.2%, respectively. Major complications showed no differences between cT1a (3.5%) and cT1b (6.9%) patients (p = 0.28). A clinical risk stratification system was developed based on multivariable model to predict DFS and CSS with c-indexes of 0.78 (95% CI: 0.71–0.85) and 0.77 (95% CI: 0.65–0.90), respectively. With matured follow-up at five institutions, ultrasound-guided percutaneous microwave ablation is a reliable treatment option for cT1a renal cell carcinoma even in dangerous location and appears to be promising for cT1b tumors. • To our knowledge, this is the first multicenter cohort of long-term oncologic outcomes with percutaneous MWA of cT1 RCC. • The predicting model we developed is accurate to predict the long-term DFS and CSS, which can help to provide a better MWA prognostication over routinely available clinical information. • The available evidence shows that microwave ablation of clinical stage T1 RCC is safe and reliable with promising long-term oncologic outcomes, especially for cT1a RCC with excellent 10-year results.

In the current work, fine-grained dual-phase, high-entropy ceramics (Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)B2-(Ti0.2Zr0.2Hf0.2Nb0.2Ta0.2)C with different phase ratios were prepared from powders synthesized via a boro/carbothermal reduction approach, by adjusting the content of B4C and C in the precursor powders. Phase compositions, densification, microstructure, and mechanical properties were investigated and correlated. Due to the combination of pinning effect and the boro/carbothermal reduction approach, the average grain size (∼0.5−1.5 μm) of the dual-phase high-entropy ceramics was roughly one order of magnitude smaller than previously reported literature. The dual-phase high-entropy ceramics had residual porosity ranging from 0.3 to 3.2 % upon sintering by SPS and the material with about 18 vol% boride phase exhibited the highest Vickers hardness (24.2±0.3 GPa) and fracture toughness (3.19±0.24 MPam 1/2).

The occurrence of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury leads to dysfunction as well as high rates of morbidity and mortality in stroke, and new effective therapeutic strategies for I/R are still needed. We investigated the effect of IL-27 on I/R injury-induced neurological function impairment, cerebral infarction volume and variation in levels of inflammatory factors in mice with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO), as well as concentration of LDH and neuronal apoptosis in a neuron oxygen-glucose deprivation and reperfusion (OGD/R) model mediated by gp130/STAT3 signaling in vitro. Our results indicated that IL-27 could bind to its receptor of gp130 to attenuate the I/R injury-induced impairment function and cerebral infarction volume, and decrease inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1β and MCP-1 but increase anti-inflammatory factors IL-10 and TGF-β in vivo, while inhibiting LDH leakage and neuronal apoptosis through activation of STAT3 to antagonize I/R induction. Our results suggest that IL-27 may protect the brain from I/R injury through the gp130/STAT3 signaling pathway.

To compare the predictive value of Oxford acute severity of illness score (OASIS) and simplified acute physiology score II (SAPS II) for in-hospital mortality in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with sepsis.A retrospective cohort study was conducted using the data in the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV 0.4 (MIMIC-IV 0.4). Based on Sepsis-3 diagnostic criteria, the basic information of ICU adult sepsis patients with infection and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) score ≥ 2 within 24 hours of ICU admission admitted for the first time in the database was extracted, including gender, age, vasopressor drugs, sedative drugs, mechanical ventilation, renal replacement therapy, length of ICU stay, OASIS, SAPS II scores, etc. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. A receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC curve) was drawn, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was calculated to compare the prognostic value of OASIS score and SAPS II score.A total of 11 098 adult ICU sepsis patients were enrolled in the final analysis, of which 2 320 died and 8 778 survived in hospital, with a mortality of 20.90%. Compared with the survivors, the non-survivors were older [years old: 71 (60, 81) vs. 67 (56, 78)], had longer length of ICU stay [days: 6.95 (3.39, 13.07) vs. 4.23 (2.19, 9.73)] and higher proportions of using vasopressor drugs, sedative drugs, mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy [vasopressor drugs: 50.65% (1 175/2 320) vs. 33.05% (2 901/8 778), sedative drugs: 58.53% (1 358/2 320) vs. 48.41% (4 249/8 778), mechanical ventilation: 89.57% (2 078/2 320) vs. 81.66% (7 168/8 778), renal replacement therapy: 11.98% (278/2 320) vs. 6.57% (577/8 778), all P0.01]. Moreover, the non-survivors had higher OASIS score [43 (36, 49) vs. 35 (29, 41), P0.01] and SAPS II score [49 (40, 60) vs. 38 (31, 47), P0.01] as compared with the survivors. ROC curve analysis showed that the AUC of OASIS score and SAPS II score for predicting in-hospital death of ICU patients with sepsis was 0.713 [95% confidence interval (95%CI) was 0.701-0.725] and 0.716 (95%CI was 0.704-0.728), respectively, and the Delong test showed no significant difference in AUC between the two scoring systems (P0.05).OASIS score has a good predictive value for in-hospital mortality in sepsis patients, which is similar to SAPS II score. OASIS score is simpler and has a broader clinical application prospect than SAPS II score.
