As a metal-free photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) shows great potential for photocatalytic water splitting, although its performance is significantly limited by structural defects due to incomplete polymerization. Single-crystal planes are ideal platforms for catalytic research. In this work, rolled copper foils with predominantly (220) planes were used as the starting material. By using temperature gradient annealing, which caused grain recrystallization in the foils, they were transformed to those with (200) planes. In acidic solution, the overpotential of such a foil (10 mA cm−2) was found to be 136 mV lower than that of a similar rolled copper foil. The calculation results show that hollow sites formed on the (200) plane have the highest hydrogen adsorption energy and are active centers for hydrogen evolution. Thus, this work clarifies the catalytic activity of specific sites on the copper surface and demonstrates the critical role of surface engineering in designing catalytic properties.

Heterogeneous peroxymonosulfate (PMS)–based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have shown a great potential for pollutant degradation, but their feasibility for large-scale water treatment application has not been demonstrated. Herein, we develop a facile coprecipitation method for the scalable production (∼10 kg) of the Cu-Fe-Mn spinel oxide (CuFeMnO). Such a catalyst has rich oxygen vacancies and symmetry-breaking sites, which endorse it with a superior PMS-catalytic capacity. We find that the working reactive species and their contributions are highly dependent on the properties of target organic pollutants. For the organics with electron-donating group (e.g., -OH), high-valent metal species are mainly responsible for the pollutant degradation, whereas for the organics with electron-withdrawing group (e.g., -COOH and -NO 2 ), hydroxyl radical (•OH) as the secondary oxidant also plays an important role. We demonstrate that the CuFeMnO–PMS system is able to achieve efficient and stable removal of the pollutants in the secondary effluent from a municipal wastewater plant at both bench and pilot scales. Moreover, we explore the application prospect of this PMS-based AOP process for large-scale wastewater treatment. This work describes an opportunity to scalably prepare robust spinel oxide catalysts for water purification and is beneficial to the practical applications of the heterogeneous PMS-AOPs.

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are expected to be promising candidates for the applications of high-density information storage materials and quantum information processing. Lanthanide SMMs have attracted considerable interest in recent years due to their excellent performance. It has always been interesting but not straightforward to study the relaxation and blocking mechanisms by embedding 3d ions into 4f SMMs. Here we report a family of air-stable 3d-4f ion-pair compounds, YFe (1), DyCr (2), DyFe (3), DyCo (4), and Dy0.04Y0.96Fe (5), composed of pentagonal bipyramidal (D5h) LnIII cations and transition metallocyanate anions. The ion-pair nature makes the dipole-dipole interactions almost the only component of the magnetic interactions that can be clarified and analytically resolved under proper approximation. Therefore, this family provides an intuitive opportunity to investigate the effects of 3d-4f and 4f-4f magnetic interactions on the behavior of site-resolved 4f SMMs. Dynamic magnetic measurements of 1 under a 4 kOe external field reveal slow magnetic relaxation originating from the isolated [FeIII]LS (S = 1/2) ions. Under zero dc field, compounds 2-5 show similar magnetic relaxation processes coming from the separated pentagonal bipyramidal (D5h) DyIII ions with high Orbach barriers of 592(5), 596(4), 595(3), and 606(4) K, respectively. Comparatively, both compounds 3 and 5 exhibit two distinct relaxation processes, respectively from the [FeIII]LS and DyIII [Ueff = 596(4) K for 3 and 610(7) K for 5] ions, under a 4 kOe dc field. The dipolar interactions between the neighboring TMIII (TM = transition metal, CrIII or [FeIII]LS) and DyIII ions were revealed to have little effect on the thermal relaxation in compounds 2, 3, and 5, or the coexistence of the two separate relaxation processes in compounds 3 and 5 under a 4 kOe dc field, but they significantly affect the quantum tunneling of magnetization and the magnetic hysteresis behavior of 2 and 3 at low temperatures compared to those of 4.

Morphogenesis of many protozoans depends on a polarized establishment of cortical cytoskeleton containing the subpellicular microtubules (SPMTs), which are apically nucleated and anchored by the apical polar ring (APR). In malaria parasite Plasmodium, APR emerges in the host-invading stages, including the ookinete for mosquito infection. So far, the fine structure and molecular components of APR as well as the underlying mechanism of APR-mediated apical positioning of SPMTs are largely unknown. Here, we resolve an unprecedented APR structure composed of a top ring plus approximate 60 radiating spines. We report an APR-localizing and SPMT-binding protein APR2. APR2 disruption impairs ookinete morphogenesis and gliding motility, leading to Plasmodium transmission failure in mosquitoes. The APR2-deficient ookinetes display defective apical anchorage of APR and SPMT due to the impaired integrity of APR. Using protein proximity labeling, we obtain a Plasmodium ookinete APR proteome and validate ten undescribed APR proteins. Among them, APRp2 and APRp4 directly interact with APR2 and also mediate the apical anchorage of SPMTs. This study sheds light on the molecular basis of APR in the organization of Plasmodium ookinete SPMTs.

AIM:To investigate the main clinical features, pathogen distribution and drug sensitivity of lacrimal angiitis, and to provide evidence for clinical diagnosis and treatment.METHODS:Retrospective study. A total of 45 patients(45 eyes)diagnosed with lacrimal angiitis in Hebei Eye Hospital from December 2016 to October 2020 were selected to analyze the general information, clinical manifestations and previous treatment history, bacterial culture results, and drug sensitivity test results.RESULTS:All 45 patients had monocular disease, including 21 eyes with tears, increased secretion, conjunctival congestion in inner canthus, 14 eyes with red and swollen inner canthus, 6 eyes similar to eyelid cyst, and 4 eyes were found and diagnosed during routine preoperative examination. 27 eyes were previously diagnosed with other eye diseases, and the misdiagnosis rate was 60.0%. The positive rate of bacterial culture was 80.0%(36/45), Staphylococcus epidermidis was the most common, followed by Streptococcus; 52.8%(19/36)of the patients were infected with multidrug-resistant bacteria. The sensitivity rate of bacteria to fluoroquinolones(82.9%, 97/117)was higher than that of aminoglycosides(70.1%, 68/97)and cephalosporins(68.1%, 111/163). Except vancomycin, rifampicin, levofloxacin and chloramphenicol were highly sensitive to Gram-positive bacteria.CONCLUSION: Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most common pathogen of dacryocystitis, followed by Streptococcus. Levofloxacin and rifampicin can be the first choice antibiotics for local anti-infection. Rational drug use can reduce the formation of multidrug-resistant bacteria. The cure rate can be improved by complete removal of stones by incision and plasty of lacrimal canaliculus.

Many terminally ill older adults depend on family members to make medical decisions in China. Many family members find it difficult to make do-not-resuscitate (DNR) decisions in emergency departments (ED). Currently, factors that affect DNR decision making by family members for older adults needing emergency care have not been well studied. This qualitative inquiry explores factors influencing DNR decision-making among family members of terminally ill older adults in ED. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted for a 12-family member of terminally ill older adults at ED in China. Results of the conventional content analysis showed that family members made DNR decisions based on a wide of reasons: (a) subjective perception of family members, (b) conditions of the terminally ill older adults, (c) external environmental factors, and (d) internal family factors. The findings of this study expand our knowledge and understanding of factors influencing DNR decision-making by family members of terminally ill older adults in ED.

Data-independent acquisition (DIA) technology for protein identification from mass spectrometry and related algorithms is developing rapidly. The spectrum-centric analysis of DIA data without the use of spectra library from data-dependent acquisition (DDA) data represents a promising direction. In this paper, we proposed an untargeted analysis method, Dear-DIAXMBD, for direct analysis of DIA data. Dear-DIAXMBD first integrates the deep variational autoencoder and triplet loss to learn the representations of the extracted fragment ion chromatograms, then uses the k-means clustering algorithm to aggregate fragments with similar representations into the same classes, and finally establishes the inverted index tables to determine the precursors of fragment clusters between precursors and peptides, and between fragments and peptides. We show that Dear-DIAXMBD performs superiorly with the highly complicated DIA data of different species obtained by different instrument platforms. •AIM: This study aimed to evaluate the association between the pretreatment serum metrics and the best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of patients with macular edema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and its subtypes after intravitreal ranibizumab or conbercept implantation.•METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 201 patients (201 eyes) who had been diagnosed with ME secondary to RVO at Heibei Eye Hospital between January 2020 and January 2021 and had received intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment. Serum metrics were measured before the first treatment, and the correlations between BCVA and each of the following four parameters—platelets, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR)—were analyzed to identify the predictors of effective intravitreal injection treatment outcomes.•RESULTS: The mean platelet level was significantly different between the effective and ineffective groups for RVO-ME (273.02±41.49 x109/L vs. 214.54±44.08 x109/L, P9/L vs. 214.72±40.42x109/L, P9/L vs. 209.27±42.91x109/L, PPP=0.003), and CRVO-ME (152.06±44.23 vs. 118.67±41.80, P=0.001). The cutoff value of the platelets was 126.734, the AUC was 0.699, and the sensitivity and specificity were 70.7% and 63.3%, respectively. There were no statistical differences between the effective and ineffective groups (RVO-ME and its subtypes) for NLR and MLR.•CONCLUSION: Higher pretreatment platelets and PLR were associated with BCVA in patients with RVO-ME and its subtypes who had been treated with anti-VEGF drugs. Platelets and PLR may be used as predictive and prognostic tools for effective intravitreal injection treatment outcomes.

It is estimated that 60% of children undergoing anaesthesia develop severe preoperative anxiety. The anxiety is associated with adverse reactions. Sedatives such as dexmedetomidine, midazolam, clonidine, ketamine, and melatonin can be used as premedication against preoperative anxiety. However, no consensus has been reached on the choice of pre-anaesthetic sedatives in children before selective surgery. Therefore, the current network meta-analysis (NMA) was carried out to evaluate different sedatives in children aged between 1 and 7 before general anaesthesia for selective surgery.Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) were retrieved from Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), and Web of Science databases from inception to October 22, 2021. Primary outcomes showed satisfactory sedation at parent separation and also at induction or mask acceptance. Secondary outcomes were those related to added benefits and side effects. The present NMA was conducted using the R software. Results of the study were reported as Relative Risk (RR) or Mean Difference (MD) at a 95% credible intervals (CrIs).A total of 48 trials were included in the present study. It was found that the effectiveness of dexmedetomidine, midazolam, clonidine, and ketamine were superior to that of placebo in satisfactory sedation at parent separation and induction or mask acceptance. There was no significant difference between melatonin and placebo in satisfactory sedation at induction or mask acceptance. Dexmedetomidine, ketamine, clonidine, and melatonin were superior to placebo in reducing emergence delirium (ED). In addition, midazolam prolonged the length of stay in the post anaesthesia care unit (PACU) as compared with placebo. Dexmedetomidine caused a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure (SBP) and heart rate (HR). Nevertheless, it was noted that the hemodynamic changes were roughly within safety limits.It was evident that the studied drugs can provide effective sedation with exception of melatonin and placebo. However, it was found that midazolam, ketamine, and clonidine lead to several side effects. The findings of the present study supported that dexmedetomidine, especially intranasal administration, has potential in the optimal selection of the sedatives for premedication in children. This is because the drug has effective sedation, reduced incidence of ED, side effects, and onset time.

The common failure forms in the uniaxial compression test of standard cylindrical rock specimens are symmetric cone failure and splitting failure. In the past, two kinds of failure forms were explained from the plane problems of elasticity theory. However, there was a lack of research based on space problems. In this paper, based on spatial axisymmetric elastic mechanics theory, three-dimensional stress function is constructed for the cylindrical rock specimen under uniform axial compression by adopting the semi-inverse method. According to the stress function, the stress components and the principal stress are deduced when considering the end effect. The failure form is speculated, which can well explain the two common types of damage in uniaxial compression. This work may enrich the basic research of rock mechanics.
