Patients with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) have an increased risk for the development ofthrombotic complications. Recent studies indicate that osteoprotegerin (OPG) acts as an important molecule in the development of vascular diseases. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between serum OPG levels and APS manifestations in patients with SLE. Seventy-nine patients with SLE and ninety-two healthy controls, matched for age and sex, were included in this study. Serum levels of OPG, monocyte chemoattractant protein(MCP)-1 and soluble E-selectin were determined by ELISA. At the time of serum sampling, various clinical and laboratory parameters were assessed. We found that serum levels of OPG were significantly higher in patients with SLE than in healthy controls (1236 ± 82 vs 967 ± 37 pg/mL, P = 0.003). Particularly, serum OPG levels were significantly higher in SLE patients with APS than those without (1615 ± 191 vs 1171 ± 91 pg/mL, P = 0.006). Serum OPG levels correlated with titres of IgG anti-cardiolipin antibody (P = 0.026) and anti-β2-glycoprotein I antibody (P < 0.001). Moreover, serum OPG also correlated with serum levels of sE-selectin (P = 0.002), which is an endothelial cell activation marker, and MCP-1 (P = 0.003), a well known chemokine implicated in thrombogenesis. Collectively, serum OPG levels were increased in SLE patients with APS and correlated with titres of antiphospholipid antibodies, suggesting that OPG might be linked to the development of APS. A new small-disturbance model for a steady, lean, premixed combustion at transonic speeds in a channel of slightly varying area is presented. Attention is confined to dilute premixtures so that exothermicity is weak. The study uses a distinguished limit type of analysis where the nonlinear interactions between (i) the near-sonic speed of the flow, (ii) the small changes in geometry from a straight channel, and (iii) the small heat release due to the one-step first-order Arrhenius chemical reaction, are explored. The asymptotic analysis results in the similarity parameters that govern the reacting flow field. Also, the flow can be described by a nonhomogeneous (extended) transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equation which is coupled with an ordinary differential equation for the calculation of the reactant mass fraction in the combustible gas. An iterative numerical scheme which combines the Murman and Cole method for the solution of the TSD equation with Simpson's integration rule for the estimation of the reactant mass fraction is developed. It is demonstrated that steady-state solutions of the compressible reacting flow problem with detonations behind shock waves can be found. The model is used to study transonic combustion at various inlet Mach numbers, amounts of incoming reactant mass, reaction rates, and channel geometries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reviews taste and odour (T&O) issues of South Korea's water industry. For this purpose, an overview of the water supply systems and drinking water standards is presented and some results from citizen surveys for customer satisfaction are included. A case study is presented in which the water intake was shifted from inside a main reservoir to a downstream location due to T&O problems, It is true that the South Korean water industry has long relied on the tolerance of consumers for periodic T&O events. Recently the South Korean water industry has become aware that the T&O problems are at the centre of consumers' concerns and has taken several positive approaches. These include monitoring T&O events using sensory and instrumental methods, installation of a baffled-channel PAC contactor and application of advanced water treatment processes. Nonlinear beam mixing with microbubbles was explored to create a pseudo point source for aberration correction of therapeutic ultrasound. A damping coefficient for a bubble driven by a dual frequency sound field was derived by revisiting Prosperetti's linearized damping model. As a result, the overall damping term for dual frequency was obtained by linear summation of two damping terms for each frequency. The numerical simulation based on the bubble model suggests that the most efficient size range to generate a 1 MHz frequency from 4 MHz and 5 MHz sound sources is 2.6 to 3.0 pm. Furthermore, this size range constitutes the primary distribution of a specific ultrasound contrast agent. When a chamber of 0.1% of the diluted agent is sonified by 4 MHz and 5 MHz sound beams with 80° incident angle between them, an approximately 100 Pa, 1 MHz difference frequency signal can be measured approximately 10 cm away. In addition, the received 1 MHz difference frequency signal shows omni-directional characteristics, even though the overlap zone of the two sound beams is on the order of the difference frequency wavelength. In this paper, we fabricate RF integrated passive devices (RFIPDs) on two types of substrate. One is smart silicon substrate with a 25-μm-thick SiO2 surface, and the other is glass substrate. A low-cost manufacturing technology, BCB interlayer, and 10-μm Cu plating process are used to implement high-performance RFIPDs. We investigate the power-handling performance with these two types of RFIPDs. Generally, RFIPDs are used for RF front-end module components, so handling power is very important factor. But, these two types of RFIPDs show different handling-power performances. In contrast to the 5.5-W power handling of the LPF on smart silicon substrate, that of the LPF on glass substrate is below 1.5 W (with CW power and 168 h operating time). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. If RC structural walls are properly designed and proportioned, these walls can behave in a ductile manner. To achieve this goal, the designer should provide adequate strength and deformation capacity of structural walls corresponding to each performance level (e.g. immediate occupancy, life safety and collapse prevention). This study investigates the drift and ductility capacities of T-shaped structural walls on the basis of results from experimental tests and sectional analyses. To determine proper deformation capacities for T-shaped structural walls, structural performances of T-shaped walls were evaluated with several parameters such as longitudinal reinforcement ratio, distribution of longitudinal reinforcement, lateral confinement ratio, and axial load ratio. Based on these results, the level of deformation capacity specified in current design provisions (ICBO, UBC 1997), which were expressed as both strain-based damage limit and interstorey drift ratio, were evaluated. Using muon spin relaxation measurements on formamidinium lead iodide [ FAPbI 3 , where FA denotes HC( NH 2) 2 ], we show that, among the five structurally distinct phases of FAPbI 3 exhibited through two different temperature hysteresis, the reorientation motion of FA molecules is quasi-static below ≈ 50 K over the time scale of 10 − 6 s in the low-temperature (LT) hexagonal (Hex-LT, <160 K) phase, which has a relatively longer photo-excited charge carrier lifetime (τ c ∼ 10 − 6 s). In contrast, a sharp increase in the FA molecular motion was found above ≈ 50 K in the Hex-LT phase, LT-tetragonal phase (Tet-LT, <140 K), the high-temperature (HT) hexagonal phase (Hex-HT, 160–380 K), and the HT-tetragonal phase (Tet-HT, 140–280 K), where τ c decreases with increasing temperature. More interestingly, the reorientation motion is further promoted in the cubic phase at higher temperatures (>380/280 K), while τ c is recovered to comparable or larger than that of the LT phases. These results indicate that there are two factors that determine τ c , one related to the local reorientation of cationic molecules that is not unencumbered by phonons and the other to the high symmetry of the bulk crystal structure. We present a comprehensive study of the nonproportionality of NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors within the context of dark matter search experiments. Our investigation, which integrates COSINE-100 data with supplementary γ spectroscopy, measures light yields across diverse energy levels from full-energy γ peaks produced by the decays of various isotopes. These γ peaks of interest were produced by decays supported by both long and short-lived isotopes. Analyzing peaks from decays supported only by short-lived isotopes presented a unique challenge due to their limited statistics and overlapping energies, which was overcome by long-term data collection and a time-dependent analysis. A key achievement is the direct measurement of the 0.87 keV light yield, resulting from the cascade following electron capture decay of 22 Na from internal contamination. This measurement, previously accessible only indirectly, deepens our understanding of NaI(Tl) scintillator behavior in the region of interest for dark matter searches. A 40 W gallium-nitride microwave Doherty power amplifier for WCDMA repeater applications is presented. The main amplifier and peaking amplifier are implemented using two 20 W PEP GaN HEMTs. Performance is evaluated for broadband gain, power efficiency and adjacent-channel-power-ratio (ACPR). Experimental results of the GaN Doherty amplifier yielded a power gain of over 11 dB from 1.8 to 2.5 GHz, 68% power added efficiency at 40 W peak power. Good linearity performance of -48 dBc ACPR is obtained at a peak-to-average ratio of 9.8 dB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new type of microwave amplifier module, consisting of a solid-state amplifier, a predistortion linearizer, and a traveling-wave-tube (TWT), is realized. We search for energetic electron recoil signals induced by boosted dark matter (BDM) from the galactic center using the COSINE-100 array of NaI(Tl) crystal detectors at the Yangyang Underground Laboratory. The signal would be an excess of events with energies above 4 MeV over the well-understood background. Because no excess of events are observed in a 97.7  kg·yr exposure, we set limits on BDM interactions under a variety of hypotheses. Notably, we explored the dark photon parameter space, leading to competitive limits compared to direct dark photon search experiments, particularly for dark photon masses below 4 MeV and considering the invisible decay mode. Furthermore, by comparing our results with a previous BDM search conducted by the Super-Kamionkande experiment, we found that the COSINE-100 detector has advantages in searching for low-mass dark matter. This analysis demonstrates the potential of the COSINE-100 detector to search for MeV electron recoil signals produced by the dark sector particle interactions.

Aim: To estimate the acceptable compression ratio of full-field digital mammography (FFDM) using the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) 2000 compression algorithm., Materials and Methods: Eighty cases that included images of 40 masses (20 benign, 20 malignant) and 40 microcalcifications (20 benign, 20 malignant) were collected. The images were compressed to five different lossy ratios: 20:1, 40:1, 60:1, 80:1, and 100:1, and four radiologists independently determined whether the compressed group was distinguishable from the control group. The ratio of the compressed group that was rated indistinguishable from the control group was compared for each reviewer, and the results were analysed for agreements of three or more reviewers., Results: The ability to distinguish the compressed image from the control group is given as a range across the four reviewers: 0-1.3% (0/80 to 1/80) of the 20:1, 0-2.5% (0/80 to 2/80) of the 40:1, 5-7.5% (4/80 to 6/80) of the 60:1, 10-37.5% (8/80 to 30/80) of the 80:1, and 30-87.5% (24/80 to 70/80) of the 100:1. For three compression groups (20:1, 40:1, and 60:1), three or more reviewers agreed that there was a distinguishable difference for 0/80, 0/80, and 3/80 images, respectively. Thus, the compressed images do not differ significantly from the control group (p>0.05). However, the 80:1 and 100:1 compressed images were different for 9/80 and 29/80 images, respectively, which is significantly different from the control group (p<0.05)., Conclusion: The lossy 60:1 compression ratio for FFDM is visually identical to the control image and, therefore, potentially acceptable for primary interpretation., (Copyright © 2011 The Royal College of Radiologists. Models of real-world applications often include a large number of parameters with a wide dynamic range, which contributes to the difficulties of neural network training. Creating the training data set for such applications becomes costly, if not impossible. In order to overcome the challenge, one can employ an active learning technique known as query-based learning (QBL) to add performance-critical data to the training set during the learning phase, thereby efficiently improving the overall learning/generalization. The performance-critical data can be obtained using an inverse mapping called network inversion (discrete network inversion and continuous network inversion) followed by oracle query. This paper investigates the use of both inversion techniques for QBL learning, and introduces an original heuristic to select the inversion target values for continuous network inversion method. Efficiency and generalization was further enhanced by employing node decoupled extended Kalman filter (NDEKF) training and a causality index (CI) as a means to reduce the input search dimensionality. The benefits of the overall QBL approach are experimentally demonstrated in two aerospace applications: a classification problem with large input space and a control distribution problem.

To understand the molecular changes during ovarian cancer development, we profiled differentially expressed genes in five paired normal and cancerous ovarian tissues. Among the genes that showed differential expression, thymosin beta-10 expression was decreased in four of five cancer tissues. The decreased level of expression was confirmed by Northern. To investigate the gene's functional role in ovarian cancers, we constructed an adenovirus vector expressing thymosin beta-10 and used it to infect ovarian cancer cell lines PA-I and SKOV3. The infected cells showed disrupted F-actin stress fibers, markedly decreased cell growth, and a high rate of apoptosis. Thus, because loss of thymosin beta-10 expression may contribute to the development of a subset of ovarian cancers, restoration of thymosin beta-10 expression may be a new strategy for ovarian cancer treatment.

The gene encoding Aquifex aeolicus (Aae) DNA polymerase was expressed under the control of the trp promoter on a high-copy plasmid, pTRPNS, in Escherichia coli. The expressed enzyme was purified 11-fold with a 13.8% yield and a specific activity of 2268.3 U mg(-1). The optimum pH of the enzyme was 6.8-7.2. The optimal concentrations of KCl and Mg(2+) were 20-30 mM and 4-5 mM, respectively. Aae DNA polymerase contained a double-strand-dependent 3'-->5' proofreading exonuclease activity but lacked any detectable 5'-->3' exonuclease activity.
