Human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) has been one of the most common oral cancers owing to high percentage of betel nuts chewers, smokers, and alcohol consumption. With current treatment strategies in OSCC, more than half patients relapse and develop distant metastases with poor prognosis. To overcome the incident, OSCC poses a challenge in current therapies and treatments. Ji-Ming-Shan (JMS) is a traditional herbal prescription consisting of seven herbs including Areca cathechu Burm.f., Citrus reticulata Blanco, Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai, Euodia ruticarpa (A. Juss.) Benth., Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton, Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Platycodon grandiflorus (Jacq.). It was first recorded during the Song dynasty and has been used extensively for protection against rheumatism, treatment of swelling of tendons, relief from foot pain, gout and diuresis and other forms of inflammation.The aim of this study is to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-osteoarthritis activity of JMS extracts with the use of different cell lines (RAW 264.7 cells, SW1353 cells and primary cultured rat chondrocytes). MIA-induced rat animal models were used to assess the anti-osteoarthritis activity of the extract.This study investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of JMS-95E on LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages and IL-1β-stimulated chondrocytes. For the in vivo study, male Wistar rats were used and they were randomly assigned in different groups: blank, control, positive control and three different JMS-95E treatment groups (200, 400, 800 mg/kg/d). Paw edema, hind-limb weight bearing, serum inflammatory cytokines including hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining experiments were used to assess the efficacy of the extract in the rat model.JMS 95% ethanol extract (JMS-95E, marker substance: narirutin (5.10 mg/g) and hesperidin (11.33 mg/g) has been identified in the extract using high pressure liquid chromatography. For in vitro assays, JMS-95E did not exhibit cytotoxicity and was able to downregulate the protein expression of iNOS, COX-2 and MMP-13. It has become a strategic consensus of the international community for accelerating the deployment of 5G network. This paper presents an approach for the deployment of 5G base stations under the considerations of both the cost and the signal coverage. We formulate an optimization problem for the site selection and location of 5G macro and micro base stations. An implementation procedure is proposed in the paper for the cooperative operation and deployment scheme of optimizing the location of 5G heterogeneous base stations, which aims to optimally reduce the setup cost and strengthen the signal coverage while deploying 5G base stations. A series of numerical examples are solved in the paper to demonstrate the proposed approach, and a cost-benefit analysis is also conducted to determine the optimal deployment plan for the number of macro and micro base stations. In the conclusion, a balanced executable solution is presented to make the signal strength of all demand points in the studied 5G network reach the strongest under the budget constraint.

In this study, demethylcurcumin (DC), a minor constituent in curcuminoids, showed better anti-acetylcholinesterase (anti-AChE) activities, anti-amyloid β peptide aggregation, neuroprotective activities in 6-hydroxydopamine-treated SH-SY5Y cell models, and anti-nitric oxide production in lipopolysaccharide-treated RAW 264.7 macrophages than those of curcumin. Based on molecular docking analyses with AChE, the meta-hydroxyl group in DC, nonexistent in curcumin, showed the formation of hydrogen bonds with Ser293 and Tyr341 in the binding sites of AChE. For animal experiments, scopolamine-induced amnesia ICR mice were used to analyze the learning and memory functions of DC in comparison with the positive control donepezil. Mice fed with DC (50 mg kg-1) or donepezil (5 mg kg-1) showed improvement and a significant difference compared to those in the control group (P < 0.05, 0.01, or 0.001) in a passive avoidance test and in a water maze probe test. The brain extracts of the mice in the DC or donepezil group showed reduced AChE activities and higher ORAC activities and also showed a significant difference compared to those in the control group (P < 0.05, 0.01, or 0.001). DC might be beneficial for developing functional foods or as a lead compound for the treatment of degenerative disorders.

Background: Several large series have established endoscopic transnasal sellar surgery as the procedure of choice for removal of tumors in the sellar area. Although this procedure provides a less invasive approach to the sella, it entails complications such as nasal bleeding, impaired olfactory function, atrophic rhinitis, synechiae, etc. No studies have yet reported potential morbidities such as empty nose syndrome (ENS), although patients have a relatively empty nasal cavity after surgery. Therefore, we sought to verify the percentage of patients who truly met the diagnostic criteria for ENS after endoscopic transnasal sellar surgery, determine the variation between pre- and postoperative scores in each Empty Nose Syndrome 6-Item Questionnaire (ENS6Q) item, and further evaluate the symptoms that may affect the patients the most after surgery. Methods: Between March 2015 and January 2019, eventually 11 patients who underwent extended endoscopic transnasal sellar surgery in Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital, a tertiary referral medical center in Taipei, Taiwan, were enrolled. The patients completed the recently validated ENS6Q after surgery. Results: One patient met the objective diagnostic criteria for ENS (score ≥ 11 in ENS6Q). Significant differences were observed in the pre- and postoperative total ENS6Q scores. The pre- and postoperative scores of “nose feeling too open” and nasal crusting showed statistically significant differences. Further, compared with the other items, the postoperative score of nasal crusting increased most obviously, and it may be the most apparent operation-related symptom. Conclusion: This study is the first to report the possibility of developing ENS after endoscopic transnasal sellar surgery. Although the transnasal endoscopic approach is a safe and minimally invasive procedure for the treatment of sellar lesions, possible complications such as ENS should be considered.

This study aimed to determine the role of mitochondria-associated proteins (HtrA2, α-synuclein, and Park7) in attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A total of 125 patients with ADHD (77.6% were males) and 66 healthy controls (66.7% were males) were recruited. We found that girls with ADHD demonstrated higher plasma HtrA2 level than control girls, and their HtrA2 levels were positively correlated with verbal comprehensive ability, and negatively correlated to behavior symptoms. Among boys, we observed no correlations between these mitochondrial proteins, neuropsychological findings, and clinical symptoms. Our findings suggest that an underlying gender-specific mitochondria pathway may influence with the pathophysiology of ADHD.

Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) is an alternative to second-look surgery for the detection of cholesteatoma

Si-Wu Tang (SWT), a traditional Chinese formula, is commonly used for treating female diseases, such as relief of menstrual discomfort and climacteric syndrome. The aim of this study was to explore the synergistic effects between each herb in SWT on menstrual disorder patterns. Estradiol regulation and antioxidative effects were indicators that ameliorated menstrual disorder patterns and the total polyphenol and polysaccharide contents were quality markers. According to relationships of bioactivity and phytochemical contents, we discuss the effects of each herb in SWT. In a testosterone-treated MCF-7 cell model, Rehmannia glutinosa and catalpol significantly increased the estradiol content and aromatase upregulation in cell culture. We suggest that catalpol is an aromatase promoter in SWT, and R. glutinosa is a major actor. In terms of the antioxidant activity, pentagalloylglucose, gallic acid, and ferulic acid had stronger antioxidative effects than other compounds. We suggest that the antioxidative ability depends on polyphenols, and Paeonia lactiflora is a major contributor. Based on the prescribing principle of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, we suggest that R. glutinosa in SWT act as an aromatase promoter in the role of sovereign for ameliorating menstrual disorder patterns. As P. lactiflora has the strongest antioxidant effects and can prevent ROS damage ovarian; therefore, P. lactiflora could help R. glutinosa work as a minister for menstrual disorder patterns and R. glutinosa and P. lactiflora are a herbal pair in SWT.

This study explored the technology learning model of the elderly in a senior learning center under the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many senior learning centers were closed during the pandemic, and many of them adopted the mode of online education. However, problems such as decreased motivation and a lack of peer interaction still exist. To solve these problems, this study used the easy-to-implement calligraphy AR approach and E-book approach to conduct a quasi-experiment on the elderly of a calligraphy course offered by a senior learning center. The results show a higher learning motivation among the elderly who use calligraphy AR. The learning effectiveness and technology acceptance of the elderly in the E-book learning group were higher than those in the calligraphy AR group. The elderly mentioned that the E-book learning approach is more user-friendly. In general, in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the suspension of classes in senior centers, education through the development of technology has stimulated the growth of education in advanced learning centers. Through this kind of scientific and technological learning method, it will bring a whole new experience to the elderly. It can improve the stress relief methods, mental health, and quality of life of the elderly during the COVID-19 emergency shutdown, and provide a novel calligraphy technique learning experience for the elderly. Therefore, we believe that the calligraphy AR learning approach and the calligraphy E-book learning approach are practical and may promote quality of life and mental health of the elderly during the emergency closures due to COVID-19, providing elderly attendees with a novel calligraphy technology learning experience.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used as an "immune booster" for disease prevention and clinical treatment since ancient China. However, many studies were focused on the organic herbal extract rather than aqueous herbal extract (AHE; decoction). Due to the COVID-19 pandemics, this study tended to decipher phytochemical contents in the decoction of herbs and derived bioactivities (e.g., anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties). As prior works revealed, the efficacy of Parkinson's medicines and antiviral flavonoid herbs was strongly governed by their bioenergy-stimulating proficiency.Herbal extracts were prepared by using a traditional Chinese decoction pot. After filtration and evaporation, crude extracts were used to prepare sample solutions for various bioassays. The phytochemical content and bioactivities of AHEs were determined via ELISA microplate reader. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) were used as a novel platform to evaluate bioenergy contents with electron-transfer characteristics for antiviral drug development.Regarding 18 TCM herbal extracts for the prevention of SARS and H1N1 influenza, comparison on total polyphenol, flavonoid, condensed tannins and polysaccharides were conducted. Moreover, considerable total flavonoid contents were detected for 11 herb extracts. These AEHs were not only rich in phytonutrient contents but also plentiful in anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. Herbs with high polyphenol content had higher antioxidant activity.

Motives or goals are recognized in psychology literature as the most fundamental drive that explains and predicts why people do what they do, including when they browse the web. Although providing enormous value, these higher-ordered goals are often unobserved, and little is known about how to leverage such goals to assist people's browsing activities. This paper proposes to take a new approach to address this problem, which is fulfilled through a novel neural framework, Goal-directed Web Browsing (GoWeB). We adopt a psychologically-sound taxonomy of higher-ordered goals and learn to build their representations in a structure-preserving manner. Then we incorporate the resulting representations for enhancing the experiences of common activities people perform on the web. Experiments on large-scale data from Microsoft Edge web browser show that GoWeB significantly outperforms competitive baselines for in-session web page recommendation, re-visitation classification, and goal-based web page grouping. The computing cost of transformer self-attention often necessitates breaking long documents to fit in pretrained models in document ranking tasks. In this paper, we design Query-Directed Sparse attention that induces IR-axiomatic structures in transformer self-attention. Our model, QDS-Transformer, enforces the principle properties desired in ranking: local contextualization, hierarchical representation, and query-oriented proximity matching, while it also enjoys efficiency from sparsity. Experiments on one fully supervised and three few-shot TREC document ranking benchmarks demonstrate the consistent and robust advantage of QDS-Transformer over previous approaches, as they either retrofit long documents into BERT or use sparse attention without emphasizing IR principles. We further quantify the computing complexity and demonstrates that our sparse attention with TVM implementation is twice more efficient than the fully-connected self-attention. Acne is a common skin condition observed in adolescents. Nutmeg (Myristica fragrans Houtt) (MF) is a well-known traditional Chinese medicine, its major toxic components, safrole and myristicin, are rich in essential oils. Essential oils of MF (MFO) were extracted by hydrodistillation, the residue was extracted using 50% methanol (MFE-M). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of MFE-M against Cutibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus was 0.64 mg. Four compounds were obtained from MFE-M: myristicin (1), (+)-erythro-&Delta, 8&prime, 7S,8R- dihydroxy-3,3,5&prime, trimethoxy-8-O-4&prime, neolignan (2), (+)-erythro-&Delta, 8&rsquo, 7-hydroxy-3,4,3&rsquo, 5&rsquo, tetramethoxy 8-O-4-neolignan (3), and erythro-&Delta, 7-acetoxy-3,4,3&prime, 5&prime, tetramethoxy-8-O-4&prime, neolignan (4). Compound 2 exerted the strongest antimicrobial activity, with MICs of 6.25 and 3.12 &mu, g/mL against C. acnes and S. aureus, respectively. Moreover, 2 inhibited NO, PGE2, iNOS, and COX-2 levels in RAW 264.7 cells induced by LPS or heat-killed C. acnes, NO production at 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50) was 11.07 and 11.53 &mu, g/mL, respectively. Myristicin and safrole content was higher in MFO than in MFE-M. MFO and MFE-M caused no skin irritation after a single topical application in Wistar rats. MFE-M, with low safrole and myristicin content, did not cause skin irritation and exhibited an anti-acne effect, moreover, 2 was identified as the active substance. Therefore, MFE-M could be employed to develop anti-acne compounds for use in cosmetics.

Background Inhibiting TNF-α is an effective therapy for inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. However, systemic, nondiscriminatory neutralization of TNF-α is associated with considerable adverse effects. Methods Here, we developed a trimeric chimeric TNF receptor by linking an N-terminal mouse Acrp30 trimerization domain and an MMP-2/9 substrate sequence to the mouse extracellular domain of TNF receptor 2 followed by a C-terminal mouse tetranectin coiled-coil domain (mouse Acrp-MMP-TNFR-Tn). Results Here, we show that the Acrp30 trimerization domain inhibited the binding activity of TNFR, possibly by closing the binding site of the trimeric receptor. Cleavage of the substrate sequence by MMP-9, an enzyme highly expressed in inflammatory sites, restored the binding activity of the mouse TNF receptor. We also constructed a recombinant human chimeric TNF receptor (human Acrp-MMP-TNFR-Tn) in which an MMP-13 substrate sequence was used to link the human Acrp and the human TNF receptor 2. Human Acrp-MMP-TNFR-Tn showed reduced binding activity, and MMP-13 digestion recovered its binding activity with TNF-α. Conclusion Acrp-masked chimeric TNF receptors may be able to be used for inflammatory tissue-selective neutralization of TNF-α to reduce the adverse effects associated with systemic neutralization of TNF-α.

Canine babesiosis is an important tick-borne disease worldwide. The prevalence varies between regions and countries; however, the incidence of tick infection is associated with the status of preventive tick control measures by the owner. To date, no studies have investigated the incidence of canine babesiosis and the condition of tick prevention in Taiwan. Therefore, the true risk of babesiosis could be underestimated in dogs that are not receiving tick prophylaxis. Samples were collected at 51 hospitals around Taiwan from 265 dogs not receiving regular tick prophylaxis. Diagnostic real-time PCR was performed, and 28 dogs (10.6%) were positive for Babesia spp., including B. gibsoni (26/28) and B. vogeli (2/28). Thirty-nine dogs (14.7%) were seropositive to B. gibsoni. Take the real-time PCR positive as the Babesia infected case, the positive and negative predictive value of serological assay were 64.1% and 98.7%, respectively. The seropositivity of B. gibsoni was significantly associated with real-time PCR positivity for Babesia spp. and vice versa (p 0.001). The odds of seropositive representing real-time PCR positivity was 132.7 times greater than the seronegative (OR: 132.731, 95% CI 35.683-493.728). Risk factors in the population identified included: dogs with a short-haired coat; intact dogs; dogs from multi-dog households; dogs with more than 10 ticks and fleas on the skin; dogs that go outdoors more than 9 times per week; and dogs with an abnormal blood test result that included anemia, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia. However, the dogs were not tested for other co-infections, therefore, these hematological risk factors should be carefully interpreted and confirmed by further diagnostic tests. In conclusion, when dogs present with abnormal blood test results and share the risk factors listed above, babesiosis should be seriously considered and followed up with molecular and serological testing. The serological assay used in this study can provide valuable information in diagnosing babesiosis in dogs in Taiwan.

This paper presents the third version of a technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) based instructional design model that incorporates the distinctive, transformative, and integrative views of TPACK into a comprehensive actionable framework. Strategies of relating TPACK domains to real-life learning experiences, role-playing, and teachers as designers were developed based on the three views and integrated into the third version of the model. The model was then applied in a teacher education undergraduate course on technology integration. A case study approach was used. Data were collected from the participants’ discussion worksheets, lesson designs, and the researchers’ field observation notes. Data analysis results suggest that the strategies integrated into the model helped the participants deepen their understanding of student-centered technology applications and practice TPACK. Findings, implications, and future research possibilities are discussed.

Many prior studies have focused on controlling and monitoring disaster prevention efforts while lacking post-performance assessment from the perspective of residents. The aim of the present study is to investigate ex-post performance in past and current disaster prevention in Taipei. We reviewed practical implementation experience and the literature on ex-post performance evaluation. The authors then applied a survey-based method to collect input from community leaders who participated in disaster prevention and relief projects. Structural equation modeling was used to clarify the relationship between various constructs and to determine the impact of construct interaction on ex-post performance outcomes. We further constructed a two-dimensional grid to prioritize performance evaluation indicators providing practical implication to ensure sustainable improvements to ex-post performance effectiveness of disaster prevention. For those who ‘have participated in a disaster prevention program’ and those who ‘have never participated in a disaster prevention program’, the ex-post performance index of the former group is 7.63% higher than their counterpart, showing the importance of disaster prevention program in affecting ex-post performance and effectiveness. The development of a satisfaction/performance index system can facilitate governments in the post-performance evaluation of disaster prevention.

The objective of this retrospective review is to evaluate the ability of the Murray secretion scale to predict aspiration as determined by fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing. Patients with dysphagia undergoing a fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing study between January 2013 and November 2015 from a single, tertiary care institution were retrospectively reviewed. The Murray secretion scale and penetration aspiration scale on fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing examination were determined. Spearman’s correlation analysis, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and relative risk evaluating the relationship between the Murray secretion scale and aspiration on fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing were calculated. Subgroups of head and neck cancer patients, penetration group, and aspiration group were also analyzed. The mean age of the cases (N = 212) was 62.4 years. Eighty percent were male. The indications for the concentrated extract product (CEP) of Wu Lin San (WLS) are urethritis, cystitis, and gonorrhea. In clinical settings, WLS is combined with other CEPs used. However, there are no prescribed guidelines of CEPs in Taiwan. In this study, we would establish the CEP-prescribed applications of WLS for cystitis according to the clinical prescription patterns and ancient traditional medicine books. The prescription patterns of WLS were analyzed from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan for the period from 2000 to 2015. The results show that WLS was most frequently prescribed for cystitis (17.12% of a total prescriptions), and its prescribed dosage was 3∼5 g per day. Among them, 62.53% were for patients >40 years, and 72.45% were for women. Moreover, prescription patterns of WLS for cystitis were divided into 4 types: Type 1, WLS combined with Pa Cheng San (PCS) and Ti Tang Tang (29.75%); Type 2, WLS combined with PCS and dandelion (13.89%); Type 3, WLS combined with PCS and Tao Ho Cheng Chi Tang (6.63%); and Type 4, WLS combined with PCS (2.75%). According to lectures, review revealed the following principles of WLS application. WLS only should be adopted for simple heat strangury, while Type 4 should be applied for excess heat and dampness strangury. For patients with heat strangury coupled with an early-stage blood amassment pattern in lower jiao (abdomen), Type 3 could be administered. Type 2 should be used for heat strangury accompanied by dampness toxicity with infection. By contrast, Type 1 should be applied to patients with severe blood stasis. The application principles of WLS with other CEPs could serve as a reference for cystitis treatment in clinical settings.

In the field of vocational education, no studies have examined the use of augmented reality (AR) learning technologies in the teaching of cosmetology. However, this study proposed the “Makeup AR” learning approach and conducted a quasi-experiment to examine the interaction effect between said approach and students with active and reflective learning styles. The research participants were 70 students from a vocational senior high school. The experimental group comprised 36 participants who were taught using Makeup AR, and the control group comprised 34 participants who were taught using an e-book. The results revealed that the use of Makeup AR improved students’ learning effectiveness. The proposed approach also effectively enhanced students’ self-efficacy and reduced their cognitive load. The students with a reflective learning style had a higher cognitive load than those with an active learning style when using the e-book learning approach. No difference in learning motivation was noted between the experimental and control groups. Overall, Makeup AR is suitable for makeup design certification courses in vocational senior high schools and can enhance learning effectiveness, improve students’ self-efficacy, and reduce cognitive load. This study suggests that the implementation of AR technology in certification courses can be beneficial to learning outcomes.

Objective Cryptotanshinone (CPT) and dihydrotanshinone (DHT) are diterpenoid anthraquinone compounds extracted from traditional Chinese herbal medicine (TCM). Recent studies have shown that CPT regulates the signal transduction pathways via microRNA (miRNA) alterations. However, few studies have investigated the role of DHT in miRNA alterations affecting cell-signaling pathways. This study aimed to investigate the miRNA alterations and post-transcriptional regulation activities of DHT in comparison to CPT. Methods HepG2 and HT-29 cells were treated with DHT or CPT for 72 h. MiRNA, transcription factor encoding mRNA, and downstream gene expression were determined using real-time quantitative PCR. Protein expression was analyzed using western blotting. Results The results revealed that CPT and DHT targeted cell proliferation and apoptosis signaling pathways via miR-15a-5p, miR-27a-5p, miR-100−5p, and miR-200a-5p alterations.In silico target predictions showed that downregulation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mRNA expression by DHT might also suppress the expression of STAT family proteins and lead to anti-proliferation effects. We also found that, compared to CPT, DHT might possess higher potency in cell growth regulation via multi-miRNA and transcription factor alterations. Conclusion This study revealed that CPT and DHT targeted cell proliferation and apoptosis signaling pathways via alterations in miRNAs and transcription factors. In addition, the findings of this study suggest that DHT is more potent than CPT in cancer chemopreventive activities. Therefore, DHT at a low dose is a TCM compound with less toxic side effects and may contribute to the development of natural medicine as a potential cancer chemopreventive agent.

Previous studies have identified a great number of factors associated with corporate misconduct. However, ranking the importance of those related factors and using them to predict corporate misconduct in the construction industry have been overlooked. To address this gap, this study developed a random forest (RF) model to fulfill the variable importance ranking and corporate misconduct prediction. The RF model was built on the data of 953 observations from 93 Chinese construction companies in 2000–2018. Based on the variable importance analysis of RF, the top 11 important variables were obtained, of which all indicates corporate governance. They may be associated with an increased risk of corporate illegal activities. The developed RF model can be used to predict corporate misconduct to regulate decision making for construction companies and lead sustainable business development. This RF model could also facilitate regulators and investors to timely identify violating companies so that proactive interventions may be implemented in a targeted manner.

This study proposes an analytical framework to evaluate the economic influence and leakage of the construction sector in a small and open economy, using Hong Kong as a case study. Input–output analysis (IOA) is used to capture the domestic intersectoral linkages, and multiregional IOA is used to measure the leakages resulting from international trade. In the absence of Hong Kong official input–output tables (IOTs), five IOTs during 1995–2013 and three multiregional IOTs from 2004, 2007, and 2011 are compiled using the Global Trade Analysis Project (GTAP) database in conjunction with official statistics. Comparisons with other economies are included to disclose the relative economic influences of Hong Kong’s construction sector. The results reveal the declining economic importance of Hong Kong’s construction sector in stimulating economic growth, along with increased leakage to the manufacturing sectors abroad. The domestic backward linkage dropped from 1.74 in 1995 to 1.55 in 2013 per unit of final demand. In 2011, 40.55% of the economic contribution leaked out through international trade. The outcomes provide a rational basis with which to inform the decision making of the Hong Kong government in infrastructure planning, resource utilization, and benefit optimization. An import substitution policy is recommended to ease foreign dependence through local production of construction products.

Email triage involves going through unhandled emails and deciding what to do with them. This familiar process can become increasingly challenging as the number of unhandled email grows. During a triage session, users commonly defer handling emails that they cannot immediately deal with to later. These deferred emails, are often related to tasks that are postponed until the user has more time or the right information to deal with them. In this paper, through qualitative interviews and a large-scale log analysis, we study when and what enterprise email users tend to defer. We found that users are more likely to defer emails when handling them involves replying, reading carefully, or clicking on links and attachments. We also learned that the decision to defer emails depends on many factors such as user's workload and the importance of the sender. Our qualitative results suggested that deferring is very common, and our quantitative log analysis confirms that 12% of triage sessions and 16% of daily active users had at least one deferred email on weekdays. We also discuss several deferral strategies such as marking emails as unread and flagging that are reported by our interviewees, and illustrate how such patterns can be also observed in user logs. Inspired by the characteristics of deferred emails and contextual factors involved in deciding if an email should be deferred, we train a classifier for predicting whether a recently triaged email is actually deferred. Our experimental results suggests that deferral can be classified with modest effectiveness. Overall, our work provides novel insights about how users handle their emails and how deferral can be modeled.

In online portfolio selection, an online investor needs to distribute her wealth iteratively and hopes to maximize her final wealth. To model the behavior of the prices of assets in a financial market, we consider two measures of the price relative vectors: quadratic variability and deviation. There exist algorithms which achieve good performance in terms of these two measures. However, the theoretical guarantees depend on an additional parameter, which may not be available before the investor chooses her strategies. In this paper, the performances of the algorithms are tested using real stock market data to understand the influence of this additional parameter.

Due to the increasing aging and dementia populations all over the world, Taiwan has followed the global action plan to propose the seven key action areas. As one key action area, the authors conducted a systematic literature review regarding the diagnosis, treatment, care, and support of patients with dementia and their caregivers. The findings of a systematic literature review suggest that the case management model could be applied for dementia care; however, the evidence is still weak because of the roles and intensity of case managers, as well as their communication skills. Except for the literature review, the authors also introduced the center for geriatrics and gerontology at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital in southern Taiwan providing as the integrated dementia care. Additionally, 10-year long-term care plan 2.0 of Taiwan was also introduced and compared with the systems of integrated dementia care. Based on this model of long-term care provision, the Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital has potential to be an A level center, the daycare center and aforementioned three dementia care units could function as B level care centers, and the Double-Bliss Welfare and Charity Foundation, as well as other local community organizations and activity centers, could provide C level care services. Furthermore, the correspondent author held the 2018 comprehensive practicum conference for integrated care of patients with dementia from January 19 to February 22, 2018 in collaboration with 19 nursing faculties from various nursing schools. Finally, the correspondent author intends to conduct further research in collaboration with the Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital to further develop the “3D” (delirium, dementia, and depression) assessment scale and evidence-based care protocols.

This paper examines the theoretical literature and conducts empirical analysis on the mechanisms of corporate governance. We focus on directors’ role in ameliorating various types of agency problems (e.g., corporate misconduct) arising from conflicts of interests between stakeholders and managers to the firm. In a sample of 45 public listed construction companies in Taiwan between 2005 and 2014, the result indicates that illegal corporate behavior is more likely to occur in firms with large boards while board independence isn’t significant for misconduct constraining. The finding also shows why board’s monitoring function is important and how firms rein in misconduct by altering board size and composition.

In this research, a design for smart home curtains was proposed. The design is based on an Arduino UNO R3 development board equipped with an ESP8266-01 Wi-Fi module that communicates with an Android client application (app) using HTTP protocols to control the sensor and motor modules.

We study the adversarial multi-armed bandit problem, in which a player must iteratively make online decisions with linear loss vectors and hopes to achieve a small total loss. We consider a natural measure on the loss vectors, called deviation, which is the sum of the distances between every two consecutive loss functions. We propose an online algorithm and the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a small total loss when the loss functions have a small deviation.

The aim of this study was to examine the metabolic parameters, including body mass index (BMI), homeostasis model assessment-estimated insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), homeostasis model assessment-estimated pancreatic β-cell function (HOMA-β), and lipid plasma level, in medicated patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and to assess factors related to metabolic parameters in patients with MDD. 121 patients with MDD and 63 controls were recruited. The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Continuous Performance Test (CPT), and Finger-Tapping Test (FTT), were administered. BMI, HOMA-IR, and HOMA-β were calculated as modifiable metabolic parameters. The FTT results and BMI in depressed patients were significantly poorer and lower, respectively, than those of the controls. However, no significant differences were noted between MDD patients and controls included metabolic parameters and other neuropsychological tests. Among depressed patients, higher BMI is significantly related with lower education, no tobacco use, and male. The result demonstrated metabolic parameters could be neutral among medicated patients with MDD, particularly in non-elderly Asian individuals. The deficits of psychomotor speed could be more prominent than other cognitive alterations in patient with MDD.

The popularity of Internet and growing B2C electronic commerce nowadays make product or service information easy to be acquired. However, making an optimal choice from the various alternative products becomes a laborious process. In this paper, an ontology-based Decision Support System (DSS) with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was proposed for the specific application of tour package selection. The system is composed of two subsystems, the product gatherer and the decision maker, which are used to find out right products and make an expected choice respectively. In the product gatherer subsystem, an ontology-based web service architecture with Web Ontology Language (OWL) was established for the semantic content processing of product information. The Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) is utilized to establish the communication interface and gather XML-based contents through Remote Procedure Calls (RPC) between the system and the database servers of travel agencies. In the decision maker subsystem, the Analytic Hierarchy Process is utilized to make an optimal decision for satisfying the requirement given by the consumer. The system aims to help consumers to avoid falling into decision-making hesitation and get an expected choice from various and similar products.

Although online examination for e-learning is widely realized nowadays. However the production of question bank is time-consuming. This paper proposes an assessment authoring tool to assist teachers in creating reusable test question items. The items conforms to the IMS Question and Test Interoperability (QTI) specification and are easy to share, reuse, exchange, and access across distributed learning management systems (LMS). System design and implementation were presented in this paper for sharing and contributing development experiences to related works.

Autoimmune hypophysitis (AH) is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by infiltration of T and B lymphocytes in the pituitary gland. The mechanisms through which infiltrating lymphocytes cause disease remain unknown. Using a mouse model of AH we assessed whether T lymphocytes undergo activation in the pituitary gland. Infiltrating T cells co-localized with dendritic cells in the pituitary and produced increased levels of interferon-γ and interleukin-17 upon stimulation in vitro. Assessing proliferation of CD3- and B220-postive lymphocytes by double immunohistochemistry (PCNA-staining) and flow cytometry (BrdU incorporation) revealed that a discrete proportion of infiltrating T cells and B cells underwent proliferation within the pituitary parenchyma. This proliferation persisted into the late disease stage (day 56 post-immunization), indicating the presence of a continuous generation of autoreactive T and B cells within the pituitary gland. T cell proliferation in the pituitary was confirmed in patients affected by autoimmune hypophysitis. In conclusion, we show that pituitary-infiltrating lymphocytes proliferate in situ during AH, providing a previously unknown pathogenic mechanism and new avenues for treatment.

The purpose of this study was (a) to develop an instructional design model for preservice teachers’ learning of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) in multidisciplinary technology integration courses and (b) to apply the model to investigate its effects when used in a preservice teacher education setting. The model was applied in a technology integration course with fifteen participants from diverse majors. Data included individual participants’ written materials and TPACK survey responses, group lesson plans, and the researchers’ field notes. The data analysis results revealed that: (1) the participants had difficulties understanding pedagogical knowledge (PK), which hindered their learning of integrated knowledge of TPACK and (2) their learning of TPACK was the combination rather than the integration of PK, technological knowledge, and content knowledge. Suggestions and implications for refining the model and future research possibilities are discussed.

The stem with hook of Uncaria rhynchophylla (Chinese herbal name Gou-Teng) is a traditional Chinese medicine that has been ethnopharmacologically used to extinguish wind and clean interior heat. Rhynchophylline (RHY), a tetracyclic oxindole alkaloid isolated from U. rhynchophylla, displays significant antineuroinflammatory effects. However, there is no evidence to indicate that rhynchophylline can cross the blood–brain barrier and be detected in the brain. In this study, an in vivo microdialysis sampling method coupled with UPLC/MS/MS was employed for the continuous simultaneous monitoring of unbound RHY in rat blood and brain. The precursor ion product ion transition at m/z 385.2 160.0 for rhynchophylline was monitored. A calibration curve gave good linearity (r > 0.996) over the concentration range from 0.5 to 1000 ng/mL. The results demonstrated that rhynchophylline could be detected in the brain and plasma from 15 min to 6 h after its administration (1 or 10 mg/kg, i.v.). All the pharmacokinetic parameters of rhynchophylline in the brain and plasma were obtained. These results show that rhynchophylline can cross the blood–brain barrier and they provide useful clinical information. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A high-resolution regional atmospheric model is used to simulate present-day western North Pacific (WNP) tropical cyclone (TC) activity and to investigate the projected changes for the late twenty-first century. Compared to observations, the model can realistically simulate many basic features of the WNP TC activity climatology, such as the TC genesis location, track, and lifetime. A number of spatial and temporal features of observed TC interannual variability are captured, although observed variations in basinwide TC number are not. A relatively well-simulated feature is the contrast of years when the Asian summer monsoon trough extends eastward (retreats westward), more (fewer) TCs form within the southeastern quadrant of the WNP, and the corresponding TC activity is above (below) normal over most parts of the WNP east of 125°E. Future projections with the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 3 (CMIP3) A1B scenario show a weak tendency for decreases in the number of WNP TCs, and for increases in the more intense TCs; these simulated changes are significant at the 80% level. The present-day simulation of intensity is limited to storms of intensity less than about 55 m s−1. There is also a weak (80% significance level) tendency for projected WNP TC activity to shift poleward under global warming. A regional-scale feature is a projected increase of the TC activity north of Taiwan, which would imply an increase in TCs making landfall in north China, the Korean Peninsula, and parts of Japan. However, given the weak statistical significance found for the simulated changes, an assessment of the robustness of such regional-scale projections will require further study.

To determine the effects of co-ingesting caffeine (CAF) and carbohydrate (CHO) on high-intensity intermittent sprints (HIS) performance and physiological responses. Twelve active males underwent 4 interventions at least 7 days apart in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, balanced trial. A meal contained 65 % CHO was provided 2 h before the HIS test. Participants ingested the placebo (PLA) or CAF (6 mg kg−1 BW) 1 h before taking an HIS test, and ingested a PLA or CHO solution (0.8 g kg−1 BW) before undergoing the testing protocol. The HIS protocol comprised ten sets of 5 × 4-s sprints on a cycle ergometer with a 2-min recovery between each set. There was no significant difference between peak power output and mean power output between trials (p > 0.05). Compared with PLA, CAF + CHO resulted in a 5.2 % reduction in total work, corresponding to a 24.7–25.7 % increase in fatigue at the end stage of the HIS. Vitis thunbergii Sieb. et Zucc. var. taiwaniana Lu (VT) is an indigenous plant in Taiwan that is traditionally used for promoting joint health. In this study, we used in vitro primary human chondrocytes (PHCs) and two in vivo animal models to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects of VT on arthritis. Results showed that the water extract of the stems and roots from VT (VT-SR) was rich in flavones and phenols with 1.1 mg/g of resveratrol, 6.7 mg/g of hopeaphenol, and 5.1 mg/g of (+)-ɛ-viniferin. VT-SR significantly scavenged DPPH radicals and inhibited prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced PHCs without exhibiting significant cytotoxicity. In in vivo models, the VT-SR (500 mg/kg) significantly decreased serum PGE2 and knee 2-(18)F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ((18)F-FDG) levels in LPS-induced acute inflammatory arthritis in rabbits. In addition, dietary supplementation with VT-SR for 28 days significantly alleviated type II collagenase-induced rat osteoarthritis with improvements in weight bearing and range of motion tests. In conclusion, our results suggest that the VT-SR is a good candidate for developing dietary supplements to prevent joint deterioration and inhibit inflammation.
