BACKGROUND: Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are flame retardants found in North American household products during the past four decades. These chemicals leach out in dust as products age, exposing individuals daily through inhalation and ingestion. Animal studies suggest that PBDEs disrupt sex hormones and adversely affect development of the reproductive system. OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we examined whether there is a link between maternal hair PBDE concentrations and the risk of cryptorchidism (undescended testes) in male infants; testis descent is known to be dependent on androgens. METHODS: Full-term male infants were recruited through clinics in Montreal, Toronto, and London, Canada. Boys with cryptorchidism at 3-18 months of age (n = 137) were identified by pediatric urologists and surgeons; similar-aged controls (n = 158) had no genitourinary abnormalities as assessed by pediatricians. Eight BDE congeners (BDE-28, -47, -99, -100, -153, -154, -183, -209) were measured by GC- MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) in maternal hair samples collected at the time of recruitment. RESULTS: The [summation] PBDE geometric mean for maternal hair was 45.35 pg/mg for controls and 50.27 pg/mg for cases; the concentrations of three BDEs (BDE-99, -100, and -154) were significantly higher in cases than controls in unadjusted models. In adjusted models, every 10-fold increase in the concentration of maternal hair BDE-99 [OR = 2.53 (95% CI: 1.29, 4.95)] or BDE-100 [OR = 2.45 (95% CI: 1.31, 4.56)] was associated with more than a doubling in the risk of cryptorchidism. BDE-154 [OR = 1.88 (95% CI: 1.08, 3.28)] was also significant. Conclusions: Our results suggest that maternal exposure to BDE-99, -100, and - 154 may be associated with abnormal migration of testes in the male fetus. Background: Seasonality of food availability, physical activity, and infections commonly occurs within rural communities in low and middle-income countries with distinct rainy seasons. To better understand the implications of these regularly occurring environmental stressors for maternal and child health, this study examined seasonal variation in nutrition and health care access of pregnant women and infants in rural South Africa. Methods: We analyzed data from the Venda Health Examination of Mothers, Babies and their Environment (VHEMBE) birth cohort study of 752 mother-infant pairs recruited at delivery from August 2012 to December 2013 in the Vhembe District of Limpopo Province, the northernmost region of South Africa. We used truncated Fourier series regression to assess seasonality of antenatal care (ANC) attendance, dietary intake, and birth size. We additionally regressed ANC attendance on daily rainfall values. Models included adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Maternal ANC attendance, dietary composition, and infant birth size exhibited significant seasonal variation in both unadjusted and adjusted analyses. Adequate frequency of ANC attendance during pregnancy (≥ 4 visits) was highest among women delivering during the gardening season and lowest during the lean (rainy) season. High rainfall during the third trimester was also negatively associated with adequate ANC attendance (adjusted OR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.40, 0.86). Carbohydrate intake declined during the harvest season and increased during the vegetable gardening and lean seasons, while fat intake followed the opposite trend. Infant birth weight, length, and head circumference z-scores peaked following the gardening season and were lowest after the harvest season. Maternal protein intake and ANC ≤ 12 weeks did not significantly vary by season or rainfall. Conclusions: Seasonal patterns were apparent in ANC utilization, dietary intake, and fetal growth in rural South Africa. Bisphenols and phthalates leach from medical devices, and this exposure is likely to increase in postcardiac surgery patients. Previous studies suggest that such chemical exposure may impact recovery and wound healing, yet the direct effects of bisphenols and phthalates are unknown in this context. To study the direct effect of clinically based chemical exposures, we measured the metabolites representative of 6 bisphenols and 10 phthalates in men before and after cardiac surgery and then replicated this exposure in a mouse model of cardiac surgery and assessed survival, cardiac function and inflammation. Bisphenol A (BPA), di-ethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP), butylbenzyl phthalate, di-isodecyl phthalate, and di- n -butyl phthalate metabolites were increased after surgery. DEHP exposure predominated, was positively correlated with duration on the cardiopulmonary bypass machine and exceeded its tolerable daily intake limit by 37-fold. In vivo, C57bl/6 N male mice treated with BPA+phthalates during recovery from surgery-induced myocardial infarction had reduced survival, greater cardiac dilation, reduced cardiac function and increased infiltration of neutrophils, monocytes and macrophages suggesting impaired recovery. Of interest, genetic ablation or estrogen receptor beta (ERβ) antagonism did not improve recovery and replacement of DEHP with tri-octyl trimellitate or removal of BPA from the mixture did not ameliorate these effects. To examine the direct effects on inflammation, treatment of human THP-1 macrophages with BPA and phthalates induced a dysfunctional proinflammatory macrophage phenotype with increased expression of M1-type macrophage polarization markers and MMP9 secretion, yet reduced phagocytic activity. Although effective in controlling malaria, indoor residual spraying results in elevated exposure to insecticides such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and pyrethroids. These chemicals cross the placenta, but no studies have examined their associations with birth outcomes in populations residing in indoor residual spraying areas. We investigated this question in the Venda Health Examination of Mothers, Babies and Their Environment (VHEMBE), a birth cohort study of 751 South African children born between 2012 and 2013. We measured maternal peripartum serum DDT and urine pyrethroid metabolite concentrations and collected data on birth weight, length, head circumference, and duration of gestation. We analyzed the data using marginal structural models with inverse-probability-of-treatment weights, generalized propensity scores, and standard conditional linear regression. Using all 3 analytical methods, p,p ′-DDT, o,p ′-DDT, and to a lesser extent p,p ′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene were related to elevated birth weight, birth length, and head circumference among girls. Changes in gestational duration did not mediate this relationship, suggesting that these exposures accelerate fetal growth, which is consistent with the known estrogenic properties of o,p ′-DDT and p,p ′-DDT. No associations with pyrethroid metabolites were found. Results suggest that prenatal exposure to DDT is related to elevated birth size. Volleyball Canada and Volleyball Quebec developed long-term athlete development models in order to guide volleyball coaches concerned with athlete development. These models propose guidelines about the development of skills. However, it has yet to be determined whether coaches apply long-term athlete development guidelines in their coaching practice. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to describe the amount of time devoted to the various skills trained by four volleyball coaches of different levels and to compare these training skills with the long-term athlete development guidelines. The results of this multiple case study (n = 4) indicated that based on long-term athlete development guidelines, (a) college and university coaches over-trained technical skills; (b) high school coaches and university coaches undertrained individual tactical skills; and (c) high school coaches over-trained team tactical skills. Corrective measures that might help coaches apply the long-term athlete development guidelines are changes in the access to training facilities, competition schedules, and coach education programs.
