A robust and reliable risk assessment procedure for hydrological hazards deserves attention. The transport of mixed material in the types of hazard, such as flash floods and debris flows, plays an important role and should be taken into consideration. At present, however, the mixed material transport phenomenon is not systematically and simply included in the procedures for the elaboration of hazard analysis. The consequence is the risk of losing prediction accuracy and of underestimating hazard impacts. The phenomenon of open-channel junction flow such as in irrigation ditches and at wastewater treatment facilities is an important aspect of hydrological engineering. Extensive experimental studies of the flow characteristics have been conducted. In this study, an Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter is used to monitor the flow in large open-channel junctions at the Chihtan purification plant in Taipei. The condition of the experiment is made up of different discharge. The result of the measurement data shows that the mean velocity profile, aspect ratio, measured vertical line location and the ratio of the distance of the vertical line maximum velocity from the bed to water depth. An artificial neural network (ANN) is used to simulate the mean velocity profiles in this study. The results show that the ANN can accurately and reliably simulate the mean velocity profiles. The result is believed to provide hints for the consideration of the effects, induced by mixed material transport, in the elaboration of hazard analysis.

In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. This study uses data from Mao-Luo-Hsi Bridge to model the bridge structure and a set of developed alarm and action values to formulate guidelines for bridge maintenance and seismic hazard prevention. The bridge model is improved by incorporating on-site ambient vibration measurement to perform modal analyses. Dynamic analyses of the bridge are implemented using the established 3D model subjected to uniform loading and seismic force, with or without consideration of soil interaction with the structure. The maximum displacements for different sections of the bridge are compared, and statistical regression analyses are used to explore their correlation. Information for bridge safety assessment is proposed, which can mitigate loss of property and lives due to bridge failure. Regression analyses of the maximum displacements between abutments D and E of the considered bridge in the axial, horizontal, and vertical directions under various seismic intensities are conducted, giving R2 values of 0.9462, 0.9352, and 0.9010, respectively. The developed maintenance guidelines are reliable since all parameters from regression analyses have a 95% confidence interval excluding the zero value. The bridge alarm value and action value are determined for this bridge site at earthquake intensity scales of 4 and 5, respectively.

This study began with an extensive literature review combined with a quantitative study and personality trait testing and involves the medical sales representatives of several multinational pharmaceutical companies which are members of the Taiwan Pharmaceutical Marketing and Management Association (TPMMA). Their sales forces range from 50 to 200 and all used automation systems in their daily sales operation. These systems were not the same for all companies, since they developed systems independently of one another; however they were very similar in function and design. The members of the sales force had different experience in using the systems and received different levels of support and training. Similarly, each sales force management group was free to develop and use sales force automation (SFA) systems based on their own business needs and financial standing. The product lines were different for each sample company as was their competitiveness in the market place. This paper aims to develop a model for debris flow hazard assessment, since Taiwan is a mountainous country subject to bouts of heavy rainfall during the rainy and typhoon seasons and is thus frequently subject to landslide disasters. The database used is comprised of information from actual cases that occurred in areas of Hualien in eastern Taiwan during 2007 and 2008. The Kalman filter model is utilized to assess the occurrence of debris flows from computed indexes, to verify modeling errors. Comparisons are made between two models to determine which one is better in practical applications. The efficiency of the Kalman filter decision system has been proved, showing smaller average relative error and correspondingly larger ratio of success on debris flow assessment when compared to the neural network model. The relative error is calculated between the differences in the ratio of model outputs and that of actual occurrences. Such an error index can be decreased from 4.65 to 3.39% by introducing the concept of geographic divisions to the Kalman filter model, which demonstrates its ability to forecast the occurrence of debris flows for the coming year.

Guiding information services have become more important at popular tourism destinations. Conventional methods seem no longer adequate to provide information to satisfy all tourist needs. A new system for providing such services is described in this paper. Mobile geographic information system (GIS) and global positioning system (GPS) techniques are applied to provide guiding information and manage tourism destinations more effectively. The system includes four main functions, a graphic function, a GPS function, a Route function, and a Query function. In particular, this system combines mobile GIS and GPS techniques with location-based services (LCBS) to provide tourists a better trip experience and deeper understanding of the importance of this valuable landscape. The tour guiding system is currently being used for guiding services in the Yehliu GeoPark.

In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. High rates of urbanization, environmental degradation, and industrial development have affected all nations worldwide, but in disaster-prone areas, the impact is even greater serving to increase the extent of damage from natural catastrophes. As a result of the global nature of environmental change, modern economies have had to adapt, and sustainability is an extremely important issue. Clearly, natural disasters will affect the competitiveness of an enterprise. This study focuses on natural disaster management in an area in which the direct risks are posed by the physical effects of natural disasters such as floods, droughts, tsunamis, and rising sea levels. On a local level, the potential impact of a disaster on a company and how much damage (loss) it causes to facilities and future business are of concern. Each company must make plans to mitigate predictable risk. Risk assessments must be completed in a timely manner. Disaster management is also very important to national policy. Natural disaster management mechanisms can include strategies for disaster prevention, early warning (prediction) systems, disaster mitigation, preparedness and response, and human resource development. Both governmental administration (public) and private organizations should participate in these programs. Participation of the local community is especially important for successful disaster mitigation, preparation for, and the implementations of such measures. Our focus in this study is a preliminary proposal for developing an efficient probabilistic approach to facilitate design optimization that involves probabilistic constraints.

This study investigates the feasibility of detecting structural damage using the HHT method. A damage detection index, the ratio of bandwidth (RB) is proposed. This index is highly correlated or approximately equal to the change of equivalent damping ratio for an intact structure incurring damage from strong ground motions. Based on an analysis of shaking table test data from benchmark models subjected to adjusted Kobe and El Centro earthquakes, the damage detection index is evaluated using the Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) and the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods, respectively. Results indicate that, when the response of the structure is in the elastic region, the RB value only slightly changes in both the HHT and the FFT spectra. Additionally, RB values estimated from the HHT spectra vs. the PGA values change incrementally when the structure response is nonlinear i.e., member yielding occurs, but not in the RB curve from the FFT spectra. Moreover, the RB value of the top floor changes more than those from the other floors. Furthermore, structural damage is detected only when using the acceleration response data from the top floor. Therefore, the ratio of bandwidth RB estimated from the smoothed HHT spectra is an effective and sensitive damage index for detecting structural damage. Results of this study also demonstrate that the HHT is a powerful method in analyzing the nonlinear responses of steel structures to strong ground motions.

This study describes a critical assessment of the risk control decision model from a methodological perspective and identifies major shortcomings with the employment of enhanced formal evaluation and decision-making methods. This in turn could have major applications for natural disaster risk control. The methodology follows the description of interpretive structural modeling (ISM), which is an interactive learning process in which a set of different and directly related elements is structured to form a comprehensive systemic model. The next step explores the potentials of different mathematical programming approaches in order to improve decision making, i.e., for the development of an economic utility constrained-maximization model that addresses the issue of optimal budget allocation under a trade-off framework. Several aspects of risk and uncertainty are discussed within the context of an economic utility constrained-maximization model with a major focus on the importance of risk and uncertainty in research evaluation, and how the strategy determines the insurance and risk control plans.

For the reason of convenience, auction sites are one of the most popular and quickly developing of Internet shopping sites. There have been many problems, however, arising in relation to online auction commerce; these problems have been dealt with one by one. In addition to the important issue of security, some customers have faced problems such as complicated processes, insufficient product information, and bad interface design. Based on the consumer behavior model that we have built on auction sites, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the information and interface design for current domestic and foreign auction sites. The results indicated that some auction Web sites provided insufficient information and inconvenient interface design during some shopping steps. Foreign auction Web sites provided sufficient information and a more convenient interface design than did the domestic auction Web sites. The results, hopefully, can be used as the reference for online auction Web sites to provide customers more convenient shopping environments. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

The health risk of noncarcinogenic substances is usually represented by the hazard quotient (HQ) or target organ-specific hazard index (TOSHI). However, three problems arise from these indicators. Firstly, the HQ overestimates the health risk of noncarcinogenic substances for non-critical organs. Secondly, the TOSHI makes inappropriately the additive assumption for multiple hazardous substances affecting the same organ. Thirdly, uncertainty of the TOSHI undermines the accuracy of risk characterization. To address these issues, this article proposes the use of Bayesian belief networks (BBN) for health risk assessment (HRA) and the procedure involved is developed using the example of road constructions. According to epidemiological studies and using actual hospital attendance records, the BBN-HRA can specifically identify the probabilistic relationship between an air pollutant and each of its induced disease, which can overcome the overestimation of the HQ for non-critical organs. A fusion technique of conditional probabilities in the BBN-HRA is devised to avoid the unrealistic additive assumption. The use of the BBN-HRA is easy even for those without HRA knowledge. The input of pollution concentrations into the model will bring more concrete information on the morbidity and mortality rates of all the related diseases rather than a single score, which can reduce the uncertainty of the TOSHI.

Dependence (influence) relationship among criteria in complex decision-making problems is difficult to identify through supermatrices in the analytic network process (ANP) because of the trouble in preserving consistency. To alleviate the complexity in such situations, the first objective of this paper is to propose a hierarchical ANP that synthesises hierarchical structures and networks, where hierarchies are used to represent outer dependency and networks serve to delineate inner dependence. In the ANP applications, expertise is widely applied to assess influence weights; however, in some cases the criteria assessed are all related to measurable attributes, and it is difficult to estimate their dependence due to the lack of relevant knowledge. Generally, the difficulty with multivariable system control is how to overcome the coupling effects for each degree of freedom. The computational burden and dynamic uncertainty of multivariable systems makes the model-based decoupling approach hard to implement in a real-time control system. In this study, an intelligent adaptive controller is proposed to handle these behaviors. The structure of these model-free new controllers is based on fuzzy systems for which the initial parameter vector values are found based on the genetic algorithm. One modified adaptive law is derived based on Lyapunov stability theory to control the system for tracking a user-defined reference model. The requirement of the Kalman–Yacubovich lemma is fulfilled. In addition, a non-square multivariable system can be decoupled into several isolated reduced-order square multivariable subsystems by using the singular perturbation scheme for different time-scale stability analysis. The adjustable parameters for the intelligent system can be initialized using a genetic algorithm. Novel online parameter tuning algorithms are developed based on the Lyapunov stability theory. A boundary-layer function is introduced into these updating laws to cover parameter and modeling errors and to guarantee that the state errors converge into a specified error bound. Finally, a numerical simulation is carried out to demonstrate the control methodology that can rapidly and efficiently control nonlinear multivariable systems.

Taiwan is located in an area affected by Northwest Pacific typhoons, which are also one of the most important sources of rainfall to the island. Unfortunately, the abundant rainfall brought by typhoons frequently produces hazards. In recent years, typhoons and floods have caused serious damage, especially Typhoon Morakot in 2009. In this study, a probabilistic model is developed based on historical events which can be used to assess flood risk in Taiwan. There are 4 separate modules in this model, including a rainfall event module, a hydraulic module, a vulnerability module, and a financial loss module. Local data obtained from the Taiwan government are used to construct this model. Historical rainfall data for typhoon and flood events that have occurred since 1960, obtained from the Central Weather Bureau, are used for computing the maximum daily rainfall for each basin. In addition, the latest flood maps from the Water Resources Agency are collected to assess the probable inundation depth. A case study using the local data is carried out. Assessment is made to predict possible economic loss from different financial perspectives such as the total loss, insured loss, and loss exceeding probabilities. The assessment results can be used as a reference for making effective flood risk management strategies in Taiwan.

At the current time, the Taiwan government is aggressively promoting projects, such as the so-called “Double Tourist Plan”, designed to encourage the development of the sightseeing related business. Operators in the tourist industry hope to construct facilities at or near scenic areas, which, given their special geography, are often adjacent to the mountains or the ocean. Unfortunately these are also the areas that most often experience natural disasters. This has a negative impact on the tourism industry. The centralization of tourist facilities, leading to the gathering of large numbers of visitors during the holiday seasons, can place people in danger. In other words, tourism operators in the Taiwan region face a high risk of natural disasters. It is difficult to assess such risks. Most of the existing models for catastrophe risk assessment consume huge amounts of time and are costly to use, so are more commonly applied for assessment at high-value facilities (such science-based industrial parks), rather than by the tourism industry, where economic factors are of greater concern. It is necessary to develop a simple and rapid assessment method that will allow ordinary business owners to carry out comprehensive risk analysis of tourist facilities. Thus, in this study, we explore various theories related to different kinds of natural disaster risk analysis mechanisms, with the goal of establishing a rapid risk assessment model suited to the tourism industry that can be used to quickly analyze disaster-forming characteristics and risk weaknesses in local regions. Furthermore, we incorporate an expert weighting process for assigning weightings for natural disaster risk index assessment. This method can help tourism asset owners prepare for the worst, and be capable of responding appropriately if and when such an event occurs. Good planning can effectively reduce the loss and risks associated with natural disasters and allow recovery work to commence sooner.

In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. Convenience stores (CVS) are an integral part of the retail industry. Merchandises are circulated from suppliers and CVSs to consumers. Therefore, if the goods which consumers desire are always out of stock, no matter how good the service, customer satisfaction will be hard to be improved. The point of sale (POS) system provides the information analysis ability and can be used to analyze consumers' purchasing behavior as well as forecast needs. Therefore, managers of CVSs improve their revenues based on these data. No matter whether in the urban area, suburb or mountainous area, own the different characteristics of business circles. Therefore, business circles are important influencing factors. As Franchise Chains grow new operators increasingly join the business. However, it is difficult to train ordering operators in the short time. Therefore, some CVSs run out of stock and some may always order too large quantities. Only control each order precisely can meet customers' need. Therefore, how to control the order and stock of CVSs has become one of the important issues in the management of CVSs. The purpose of this research is to discuss and develop a mechanism for controlling the order and managing the stock for CVSs. The theory of the buyer and seller exchanging system proposed by Kotler was modified to include the theory of consolidating loop structure. The ''Ordinary day and holiday moving average method'' and ''back-propagation neural network'' were proposed and tested based on the operating characteristics of business circle and sale forecasting. The method can be used to improve the ordering and discarding rate for achieving the goal of ordering the right items in the right amount.

In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Generally, the biggest difficulty when designing a neural network controller that will be capable of rapidly and efficiently controlling complex and nonlinear systems is selection of the most appropriate initial values for the parameter vector. Overcoming the coupling effects of each degree-of-freedom is also difficult in multi-variable system control. In this study, an intelligent adaptive controller is proposed to handle these behaviors. First of all, an uncertain and nonlinear plant, for the tracking of a reference trajectory, is well approximated via radial basis function networks. Next, the adjustable parameters of the intelligent system are initialized using a genetic algorithm. Then, novel online parameter tuning algorithms are developed, based on the Lyapunov stability theory. A boundary-layer function is introduced into these updating laws to cover parameter and modeling errors, and to guarantee that the state errors converge to within a specified error bound. The non-square multi-variable system can be decoupled into several reduced-order isolated square multi-variable subsystems using a singular perturbation scheme for different types of time-scale stability analysis. Following this, a decoupled adaptive neural network controller is derived simultaneously to stabilize and control the system. Finally, an example, in the form of a numerical simulation, is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control methodology, which is shown to rapidly and efficiently control nonlinear multi-variable systems.

PurposeThis study aims to investigate the relationship between structural damage and sensitivity indices using the Hilbert‐Huang transform (HHT) method.Design/methodology/approachThe relationship between structural damage and the sensitivity indices is obtained by using the HHT method. Three sensitivity indices are proposed: the ratio of rotation (RR), the ratio of shifting value (SV) and the ratio of bandwidth (RB). The nonlinear single degree of freedom and multiple degree of freedom models with various predominant frequencies are constructed using the SAP2000 program. Adjusted PGA El Centro and Chi‐Chi (TCU068) earthquake data are used as the excitations. Next, the sensitivity indices obtained using the HHT and the fast Fourier transform (FFT) methods are evaluated separately based on the acceleration responses of the roof structures to earthquakes.FindingsSimulation results indicate that, when RR Originality/valueThe paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the HHT method.

Although progress has been made in assessing risks in Taiwan, there remains a need to undertake risk assessment for the Taiwanese tourism industry. Although the conventional rules of thumb usually adopted by the insurance industry for damage assessment may be adequate in normal circumstances, this is not feasible for rare incidents for which there is very little reference material. One such example is earthquake damage. The average period of occurrence of major earthquake in Taiwan is about a hundred years, which makes it impossible to precisely assess average losses. In addition, earthquakes are not like some disasters (such as typhoons or epidemics) for which one can receive early warning. Thus, in this study, we seek to provide a practical mechanism for earthquake disaster risk assessment and management for the tourism industry, focusing on insurance and prevention. The primary objective is to integrate the relevant earth sciences, engineering and insurance data with the concepts of disaster risk management, taking into consideration the characteristics and sources of earthquake-related risks. In short, we develop an earthquake disaster assessment model to apply to risk management in the tourism industry. The practicality of the model is demonstrated with some examples related to the hotel industry in Hualien, Taiwan, an area plagued by frequent earthquakes. The results clearly show the efficacy of the proposed disaster assessment models for the tourism industry.

PurposeA tension leg platform (TLP) is a vertically moored, floating structure which is normally used for offshore oil/gas production. However, these types of structures can be damaged by vibration responses that are too large. The purpose of this paper is to consider the influence of the external waves on oceanic structures.Design/methodology/approachA mathematical model of an ocean environment was constructed, in which wave‐induced flow fields cause structural surge motion, then solutions to the mathematical model were analytically derived.FindingsThe Takagi‐Sugeno (T‐S) fuzzy model is employed in the approximation of the oceanic structure. The stability analysis of the TLP system is carried out using the Lyapunov direct method.Practical implicationsThe dependence of the wave‐induced flow field and its resonant frequency on the wave characteristics and the structural properties of the platform, which include width, thickness and mass, can be drawn using a parametric approach.Originality/valueMathematical modeling is applied to find the wave‐induced displacement due to the surge motion. The vibration of the mechanical motion of the platform structure caused by wave force is also discussed.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to better understand landscape dynamics in arid and semi‐arid environments. Land degradation has recently become an important issue for land management in western China. The oasis ecosystem is especially sensitive to environmental disturbances, such as abnormal/extreme precipitation events, variations in the water supply from the upper watersheds, fluctuations in temperature, etc. Satellite remote sensing of terrestrial ecosystems can provide us with the temporal dynamics and spatial distributions of green cover over large areas of landscape. Seasonal green cover data are especially important in assessing landscape health (e.g. desertification, rate of urban sprawl, natural disturbances) in arid and semi‐arid regions. In this study, green cover data are derived from vegetation indices retrieved from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors onboard the satellite Terra.Design/methodology/approachSatellite images recorded during the period from April 2000 to December 2005 are analyzed and the spatial distribution and temporal changes of the Ejin Oasis quantified.FindingsThis study shows that it is possible to derive important parameters linked to landscape sensitivity from MODIS and the derived imagery, such as normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) time‐series data. Such a MODIS‐based time‐series monitoring system is particularly useful in arid and semi‐arid environments. The results of landscape sensitivity analysis prove the effectiveness of the method in assessing landscape sensitivity from the years 2001‐2005.Practical implicationsThe novel strategy used in this investigation is based on the T‐S fuzzy model, which is in turn based on fuzzy theory and fuzzy operations.Originality/valueSimulation results based on fuzzy models will help to improve the monitoring techniques used to evaluate land degradation and to estimate the newest tendency in landscape green cover dynamics in the Ejin Oasis.

In this paper, a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model approach combined with a parallel distributed compensation (PDC) scheme is proposed for time-delay control of the response of a tension leg platform (TLP) system subjected to an external wave force. A global PDC-based fuzzy logic controller is constructed by blending all local state feedback controllers. A fuzzy-model-based control is thereby developed which can attenuate the influence of the external wave force. The controller is evaluated in terms of stability analysis, and the linear matrix inequality (LMI) conditions guaranteeing the stability of the TLP system derived via Lyapunov theory. A simulation example is given to show the feasibility of the proposed fuzzy control approach. The example shows the concept of half-circle fuzzy number can be used in fuzzy control and the proposed control method can be employed in practical engineering problems of oceanic structure.

PurposeThe growing rate of desertification in Northwestern China and Mongolia that is occurring as a result of the conflict between economic development and natural conservation has been demonstrated in many studies. There have, for example, been some large studies using variations in bi‐weekly normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) satellite images as a parameter for evaluating the vegetation dynamics in these areas. The purpose of this paper is to identify multi‐temporal variation in vegetated and non‐vegetated areas in remotely sensed satellite images to assess the status of desertification in East Asia.Design/methodology/approachSpatial data derived from these satellite images are applied to evaluate vegetation dynamics on a regional level, to identify the areas most vulnerable to desertification.FindingsAnalytical results indicate that the desert areas in East Asia are primarily distributed over Southern Mongolia, Central and Western Inner Mongolia, and Western China (the Taklimakan Desert). These desert areas expanded from 2000 to 2002, shrunk in 2003, then expanded again from 2003 to 2005. The areas most at risk for desertification are principally distributed in Southeastern Mongolia, and Eastern Inner Mongolia.Originality/valueSimulation results based on data for deserts distributed throughout Northwestern China and Mongolia indicate that the proposed fuzzy model‐based method would be helpful for assessing and monitoring desertification. These analytical results will help administrators refine planning processes, define the boundaries of protected areas, and facilitate decisions for prioritizing areas for desertification protection.

Construction firms that work on a contractual basis are generally more concerned with short-term rather than long-term financial strategies. The main focus in short-term financial strategies is on working capital management (WCM). Cash management is a major factor for achieving good liquidity and profitability. In this study we take into consideration the cash component of working capital management based on the target cash balance. We develop a practical model that should allow Taiwan construction firms to utilize the currently available cash and assets at any point in time in the most rational way. To help understand the issues involved, we first introduce a model developed by Miller and Orr. The relationship between project duration and progress towards completion is most effectively represented in practical construction management by the S-curve. Thus, in this study we plot the fuzzy S-curve regression based on the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The practicality of the model is demonstrated using project cash flow and progress payment records from a sample project. The data are obtained from the Taipei City Government's Department of Rapid Transit Systems. Some tentative conclusions concerning the model are also given.

In this paper, the stability analysis of the GA-based adaptive fuzzy sliding model controller for a nonlinear system is presented. First, an uncertain and nonlinear plant for the tracking of a reference trajectory is well approximated and described via the reference model and the fuzzy model involving fuzzy logic control rules. Next, the difficulty in designing a fuzzy sliding mode controller (FSMC) capable of rapidly and efficiently controlling complex and nonlinear systems is how to select the most appropriate initial values for the parameter vector. The initial values of the consequent parameter vector are decided via the genetic algorithm. After this, a modified adaptive law can be adopted to find the best high-performance parameters for the fuzzy sliding model controller. The adaptive fuzzy sliding model controller is derived to simultaneously stabilize and control the system. The stability of the nonlinear system is ensured by the derivation of the stability criterion based upon Lyapunov's direct method. Finally, a numerical simulation is provided as an example to demonstrate the control methodology.

Evolution of the internal solitary waves (ISWs) in the northern South China Sea (SCS) has recently attracted the attention of many oceanographers in Taiwan and the United States. These ISWs are believed to have been induced by a branch of the Kuroshio current over Luzon Strait, which propagates westward over two ridges in the Luzon Strait between Taiwan and the Philippines, and further onto the continental margin with a shelf-slope in the SCS. This paper presents some preliminary results for the evolution of a depression ISW across two triangular obstacles using numerical modelling and laboratory experiments. The experimental results confirm that the intervals and relative height between the two obstacles are important factors in the interaction of an ISW with the obstacles. However, in the case of the movement of an ISW of depression-type across the Luzon Strait, the effect of the two ridges on the characteristics of the ISW might be less significant than that from the shelf-slope, due to the variations in relative water depth. Results from numerical experiments also show that the amplitude of an ISW can be augmented once the wave commences its contact with a shelf-slope, where an internal hydraulic jump and wave breaking with vortex motion are evident in the laboratory experiments. Eventually, an ISW of depression-type could become an elevation-type at the edge of the continental shelf landwards beyond the turning point, where the upper layer is larger than the bottom layer in a stratified water column.

A series of laboratory experiments was undertaken in a stratified two-layer fluid to investigate the energetics of the interaction between an internal solitary wave (ISW) and triangular obstacles, as well as to determine the partitioning of ISW energy and its subsequent dynamics. The ISW energy was dissipated as a result of internal breaking and turbulent mixing induced by wave instability. Tests involving different combinations of triangular obstacles in various heights and intervals and ISW of different amplitudes were performed. The wave features resulting from the interaction of an ISW and double obstacles were found to differ from those of single obstacle. The incident energy of an ISW was either reflecting back from the obstacles, dissipated through turbulent mixing, or transmitted over the double obstacles. Reduction in wave energy increased as the intervals between obstacles reduced. For two obstacles in different heights, energy dissipation was greater in the case with a higher obstacle ahead of a lower one. However, the overall performance was dependent on the relative height of the obstacles, relative water depth of the upper and bottom layer, in addition to the intervals between the obstacles.

PurposeThis study aims to apply a systematic statistical approach, including several plot indexes, to diagnose the goodness of fit of a logistic regression model, and then to detect the outliers and influential observations of the data from experimental data.Design/methodology/approachThe proposed statistical approach is applied to analyze some experimental data on internal solitary wave propagation.FindingsA suitable logistic regression model in which the relationship between the response variable and the explanatory variables is found. The problem of multicollinearity is tested. It was found that certain observations would not have the problem of multicollinearity. The P‐values for both the Pearson and deviance χ2 tests are greater than 0.05. However, the Pearson χ2 value is larger than the degrees of freedom. This finding indicates that although this model fits the data, it has a slight overdispersion. After three outliers and influential observations (cases 11, 27, and 49) are removed from the data, and the remaining observations are refitted the goodness‐of‐fit of the revised model to the data is improved.Practical implicationsA comparison of the four predictive powers: R2, max‐rescaled R2, the Somers' D, and the concordance index c, shows that the revised model has better predictive abilities than the original model.Originality/valueThe goodness‐of‐fit and prediction ability of the revised logistic regression model are more appropriate than those of the original model.

PurposeFuzzy theory provides a rigorous, flexible approach to the problem of defining and computing. Therefore, to facilitate decision making in a geographic information system (GIS), the graph layer indicator and the Takagi‐Sugeno (T‐S) fuzzy model must be integrated. This study aims to explain several versions of the T‐S fuzzy model based on fuzzy theory and fuzzy operation.Design/methodology/approachAn inference model is constructed for GIS using the T‐S fuzzy model to formulate an integrated T‐S decision‐making (TSDMK) system.FindingsThe TSDMK system accommodates inexact, linguistic, vague and uncertain GIS data. The operator assigns most graph layer indicators by intuition.Practical implicationsSimulation results for the Hualien main station show that the proposed TSDMK system is an effective approach for GIS decision making.Originality/valueThis investigation assesses applications of fuzzy logic for decision making in a GIS based on TSDMK graphs focusing on model‐based systems.

This article proposes a design method for producing H∞ control performance for structural systems using the Tagagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. A structural system with a tuned mass damper is modeled using a T-S type fuzzy model. Using the parallel distributed compensation (PDC) scheme, we design a nonlinear fuzzy controller for the tuned mass damper system. A sufficient stability condition for the control system is derived in terms of Lyapunov theory and this control problem is reformulated into solving the linear matrix inequalities (LMI) problem. Finally, the tuned mass damper is designed based on the first modal frequency of the control system and a fuzzy controller to stabilize the structural system is then found using the Matlab LMI toolbox. A simulation example is given to show the feasibility of the proposed fuzzy controller design method.

This study presents an H∞ controller design for time-delay T-S fuzzy systems based on the fuzzy Lyapunov method, which is defined in terms of fuzzy blending quadratic Lyapunov functions. The delay-dependent robust stability criterion is derived in terms of the fuzzy Lyapunov method to guarantee the stability of time-delay T-S fuzzy systems subjected to disturbances. Based on the delay-dependent condition and parallel distributed compensation (PDC) scheme, the controller design problem is transformed into solving linear matrix inequalities (LMI).

PurposeThis study seeks to develop a systematic means of identifying regression models using a complex regression model with a statistical method.Design/methodology/approachAs a widely adopted statistical scheme for analyzing multifactor data, regression analysis provides a conceptually simple algorithm for examining functional relationships among variables. This investigation assesses the proposed relationship using a sample of data in regression analysis and then estimates the fit using statistics. Furthermore, several algorithms and added variable plots are presented to obtain an appropriate regression model and the relationship between response variables y, p and explanatory variables x0,x1,x2, … ,xp.FindingsThe proposed statistical scheme is demonstrated by the analysis of experimental data on internal waves, in which the results can well illustrate what has been investigated in laboratory experiment and may be applicable to the naturally occurring reflection of internal waves from sloping bottoms.Practical implicationsIn previous studies, field observations of internal waves were carried out. Owing to the limit of stationary measurement in situ, sufficient experiment data were not easily obtained. On the other hand, data collected by laboratory experiments express more information on wave mechanism, such as energy dissipation, mixing efficiency, and stratification thickness in a stratified layer fluid system. In present study, the authors supply valuable experiment data and analytic method, which will be a great contribution to the geophysical fluid dynamics. The results illustrate well what has been investigated in laboratory experiment and may be applicable to the naturally occurring reflection of internal waves from sloping bottoms.Originality/valueMore recently, it has been proposed that internal wave mixing may contribute significantly to internal mixing in the ocean and hence has an important influence on world climatic changes. Based on the statistical algorithm and regression model, the reduction in internal wave energy can be predicted on a sloping bottom due to frictional effect. Since, interaction between internal waves and uniform slopes has occurred in an estuary, a lake or in the ocean, the results available in this paper would benefit future study on internal wave hydrodynamics.

Experiments were carried out in a wave flume on internal solitary wave (ISW) of depression-type propagating over a submarine ridge in triangular shape. Tests were arranged in series from combinations of submarine ridges in different height and ISW in different wave amplitudes. The resultant wave motions were found differing from that of surface gravity waves. Experimental results suggested the blockage parameter ζ can be applied to classify various degrees of ISW–ridge interaction, i.e., ζ

The least square method is in generally used for curve fitting problems. We here propose a fuzzy S-curve regression model to deal with the case in which the observed data are given by fuzzy numbers. The fuzzy regression curve, obtained for project control and predicting the progress of large-scale or small-scale engineering, is smoothly connected by a Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. This paper also proposes the concept that the upper bound and lower bound are given instead of the confidence interval when the observed data are not obtained exactly. Based on the project cash flow and progress payment records of an example project taken from the Department of Rapid Transit Systems, Taipei City Government, this model is demonstrated and tentative conclusions concerning the model are given. The S-curve equation developed here could be used in a variety of applications related to project control for the management of working capital for construction firms.

This paper proposes a fuzzy Lyapunov method for stability analysis of nonlinear systems represented by Tagagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model. The fuzzy Lyapunov function is defined in fuzzy blending quadratic Lyapunov functions. Based on fuzzy Lyapunov functions, some stability conditions are derived to ensure nonlinear systems are asymptotic stable. By using parallel distributed compensation (PDC) scheme, we design a nonlinear fuzzy controller for the nonlinear system. This control problem will be reformulated into linear matrix inequalities (LMI) problem.

This paper extends the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model representation to analyze the stability of interconnected systems in which there exist time delays in subsystems. A novel stability criterion which can be solved numerically is presented in terms of Lyapunov's theory for fuzzy interconnected models. In this paper, we use linear difference inclusion (LDI) state-space representation to represent the fuzzy model. Then, the linear matrix inequality (LMI) optimization algorithm is employed to find common solution and then guarantee the asymptotic stability.

This paper investigates the effectiveness of a passive tuned mass damper (TMD) and fuzzy controller in reducing the structural responses subject to the external force. In general, TMD is good for linear systems. We proposed here an approach of Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy controller to deal with the nonlinear system. To overcome the effect of modeling error between nonlinear multiple time-delay systems and T-S fuzzy models, a robustness design of fuzzy control via model-based approach is proposed in this paper. A stability criterion in terms of Lyapunov's direct method is derived to guarantee the stability of nonlinear multiple time-delay interconnected systems. Based on the decentralized control scheme and this criterion, a set of model-based fuzzy controllers is then synthesized via the technique of parallel distributed compensation (PDC) to stabilize the nonlinear multiple time-delay interconnected system and the H/sup /spl infin// control performance is achieved at the same time. Finally, the proposed methodology is illustrated by an example of a nonlinear TMD system.

The stabilization problem is considered in this study for a nonlinear system. It is shown that the stability analysis of nonlinear systems can be reduced into linear matrix inequality (LMI) problems. First, the neural-network (NN) model is employed to approximate a nonlinear system via the backpropagation algorithm. Then, a linear differential inclusion (LDI) state-space representation is established for the dynamics of the NN model. In terms of Lyapunov's direct method, a sufficient condition is provided to guarantee the stability of nonlinear systems. Based on this criterion, a model-based fuzzy controller is then designed to stabilize the nonlinear system and the H∞ control performance is achieved at the same time. Finally, two examples with numerical simulations are given to illustrate the control methodology.
