In this study, degummed and undegummed silkworm cocoon wastes were used to investigate their oil sorption capabilities for three kinds of oils, namely motor oil, vegetable oil, and crude oil. The laboratory-scale oil sorption results reveal that degummed silkworm cocoon waste has sorption capacities of 16.7, 15.8, and 14.2 g/g for motor oil, vegetable oil, and crude oil, respectively. It exhibits higher sorption capacities for these three oils compared with raw cocoons and cocoon scrap. These sorbents also exhibited excellent oil/water selectivity, retention capacity, and reusability. According to the large-scale experiment, the crude oil can be removed completely by degummed silkworm cocoon waste in 20 min, which shows that degummed silkworm cocoon waste could be considered a good alternative to synthetic sorbent materials applied to oil removal and recycling. Visceral pain (VP) is a global problem with complex etiologies and limited therapeutic options. Guanylyl cyclase C (GUCY2C), an intestinal receptor producing cyclic GMP(cGMP), which regulates luminal fluid secretion, has emerged as a therapeutic target for VP. Indeed, FDA-approved GUCY2C agonists ameliorate VP in patients with chronic constipation syndromes, although analgesic mechanisms remain obscure. Here, we revealed that intestinal GUCY2C was selectively enriched in neuropod cells, a type of enteroendocrine cell that synapses with submucosal neurons in mice and humans. [GUCY2C.sup.hi] neuropod cells associated with cocultured dorsal root ganglia neurons and induced hyperexcitability, reducing the rheobase and increasing the resulting number of evoked action potentials. Conversely, the GUCY2C agonist linaclotide eliminated neuronal hyperexcitability produced by GUCY2C-sufficient--but not GUCY2C-deficient--neuropod cells, an effect independent of bulk epithelial cells or extracellular cGMP. Genetic elimination of intestinal GUCY2C amplified nociceptive signaling in VP that was comparable with chemically induced VP but refractory to linaclotide. Importantly, eliminating GUCY2C selectively in neuropod cells also increased nociceptive signaling and VP that was refractory to linaclotide. BackgroundWilson’s disease (WD) is a rare cause of acute liver failure (ALF) and has a high fatality rate. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is important for ALF because of WD (ALF-WD). Our objective was to establish a simple, rapid, and accurate diagnostic test to distinguish ALF-WD from non-WD ALF (NWDALF) in children.Materials and methodsThe data from all cases with pediatric ALF were retrospectively collected and analyzed. We performed receiver operator characteristics curve (ROC) analysis and confirmed the optimum cut-off points.ResultsFifty-eight patients with pediatric ALF (12 with WD, 46 with other etiologies) were included. Older age was observed in ALF-WD compared to NWDALF (11.16 ± 2.51 years vs. 3.34 ± 3.81 years, p < 0.001). An analysis based on routine biochemical testings revealed that total bilirubin (TBil), direct bilirubin, indirect bilirubin, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), AST:ALT ratio, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), ALP:TBil ratio, serum albumin, gamma-glutamyl transferase, cholinesterase, hemoglobin, and platelet were statistically significant between the ALF-WD and NWDALF groups. The optimum cut-off points were obtained through ROC analysis. A scoring system was formed by assigning a score of 1 or 0 to patients who met the 13 cut-off points. Using ROC analysis, we determined a cut-off point of ≥ 6.5 for ALF-WD with 91.7% sensitivity and 97.8% specificity (p < 0.0001). In addition, a best cut-off point of ≥ 1.5 based on only five variables (ALT, AST, AST:ALT ratio, ALP, and ALP:TBil ratio), had 100% sensitivity and 91.3% specificity for ALF-WD (p < 0.0001). Based on this, when age was calculated as the sixth indicator, the best cut-off value of ≥ 2.5 had 100% sensitivity and 97.8% specificity (p < 00.0001).ConclusionOur study developed a new scoring system that consists of simple laboratory tests with good sensitivity and specificity and can be used by clinicians to quickly distinguish ALF-WD from NWDALF in children.

ObjectivesWe have reported previously that Belimumab, a human monoclonal antibody that inhibits B-cell activating factor(BAFF) could be an effective and safe option to treat Neuropsychiatric manifestations of SLE (NPSLE). To avoid inadequate efficacy of Belimumab and significant adverse events of often-used dose of cyclophosphamide (CYC) for SLE, we evaluated the efficacy, safety, and possible immune mechanisms of Belimumab treatment in combination with intermittent low-dose intravenous CYC for moderate-to-severe SLE.MethodsIn this non blinded and parallel-group trial, we collected 82 cases of moderate-to-severe SLE patients, 40 received Belimumab treatment and 42 received conventional treatments as historical controls for 24 weeks. The elderly have higher concentrations of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). AGEs are considered risk factors that accelerate aging and cause diabetic nephropathy. The effects of AGEs on renal function in the elderly remain to be clarified. This study aimed to explore the role of AGEs in renal function decline in the elderly and the protective effect of resveratrol, a stilbenoid polyphenol, comparing it with aminoguanidine (an AGEs inhibitor). A D-galactose-induced aging mouse model was used to explore the role of AGEs in the process of renal aging. The mice were administered D-galactose subcutaneously for eight weeks in the presence or absence of orally administered aminoguanidine or resveratrol. The results showed that the serum levels of AGEs and renal function markers BUN, creatinine, and cystatin C in the mice significantly increased after the administration of D-galactose, and this outcome could be significantly reversed by treatment with aminoguanidine or resveratrol. The protein expression levels for apoptosis, fibrosis, and aging-related indicators in the kidneys were significantly increased, which could also be reversed by treatment with aminoguanidine or resveratrol. These findings suggest that resveratrol could alleviate AGEs-related renal dysfunction through the improvement of renal cellular senescence, apoptosis, and fibrosis in D-galactose-induced aging in mice.

Abstract Background γδT cells play an important role in the mucosa inflammation and immunity-associated disorders. Our previous study reported that γδ T cells producing IL-17 were involved in the pathogenesis of post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (PI-IBS). However, their subset characteristic profile in this kind of disease remains unclear. Thus the current study’s aim is to investigate the functionally predominant subset and its role in PI-IBS. Methods The total T cells were collected from the peripheral blood of patients with PI-IBS. The peripheral proportion of Vδ1 and Vδ2 subset was detected by FACS after stained with anti δ1-PE and anti δ2-APC. The local colonic proportion of this two subsets were measured under laser confocal fluorescence microscope. A joint experimental and theoretical study is reported on the low-lying vibronic level structure of the ground state of the methoxy radical using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryogenically cooled, mass-selected anions (cryo-SEVI) and Köppel-Domcke-Cederbaum (KDC) vibronic Hamiltonian calculations. The KDC vibronic model Hamiltonian in the present study was parametrized using high-level quantum chemistry, allowing the assignment of the cryo-SEVI spectra for vibronic levels of CH3O up to 2000 cm-1 and of CD3O up to 1500 cm-1 above the vibrational origin, using calculated vibronic wave functions. BackgroundFactor V (FV) deficiency is a rare disease, with a low incidence rate in Asia. Therefore, the F5 mutation in the Taiwanese population is poorly understood.MethodsA Chinese family with FV deficiency was included, and the patient and his family members underwent mutation analysis. Then, patients from Keelung City (Taiwan) were screened for F5 polymorphism; the Chang Gung Human Database was used to determine single-nucleotide variants in the non-FV-deficient patient population.ResultsEight mutation sites on the F5 gene locus, including exon 16 homozygote Met1736Val and seven heterozygous mutations, including Asp68His, were found. Moreover, Met1736Val was found to be the dominant mutation in people living in the Taiwan community, and this result was compared with the records of the Chang Gung Human Database. The above-mentioned polymorphisms may result in a variable incidence of FV deficiency in Keelung City, thereby facilitating carrier diagnosis and prenatal diagnosis in most FV-deficient families.ConclusionThe homozygote Met1736Val and the co-inheritance of the Asp68His F5 gene are unique and worthy of screening in FV-deficient patients.

The aviation manufacturing industry is a key area for innovation-driven development. In order to adapt to the new requirements for aviation manufacturing talents put forward by the transformation and upgrading of the aviation industry, Nanchang Hangkong University and AVIC Hongdu Group continue to explore and practice the talent training channels urgently needed for tooling design positions. The university and enterprise jointly built an aviation manufacturing talent training model based on “practical ability-oriented and industry-education integration.” The effective method formed from four aspects: the determination of talent training methods, the establishment of professional curriculum system, the innovation of teaching methods and the improvement of university-enterprise collaborative management mechanism. Thus, the win-win cooperation between the university and enterprise has been realized, and valuable experience has been accumulated for exploring a new aviation manufacturing talent training model.

COVID-19 vaccination is vital in reducing illness, hospitalization, and mortality in the face of this global pandemic. However, COVID-19 vaccination rates worldwide remain below WHO public health targets, and persistent structural inequities reduce vaccine uptake likelihood among populations of low socioeconomic status. We conducted a cross-sectional study based on publicly available data from the Our World in Data project. We included all 124 countries with available open epidemic data and a population of more than 5 million. We used a Cox Regression Model, with population, population density, median age, human development index, GDP per capita, gender inequality index, healthcare access and quality index, hospital beds per thousand people, completion rate of primary education, infection cases of COVID-19 by the end of 2022, and death rate due to COVID-19 by the end of 2022 as predictors for model hazard rates of completion of 50% population vaccination. According to our study, countries with higher populations, higher population density, higher human development index, lower gender inequality index, and lower hospital beds per 1000 people had a higher hazard rate, which means they were more likely to achieve 50% population vaccination faster. By utilizing the time to achieve vaccination rate goals as our primary endpoint, we evaluated inequity from a dual perspective, considering both the differences in vaccination rates and the duration required to attain them. Consequently, this study employed survival analysis approaches to gain a comprehensive understanding of vaccine drivers and population-level trends nationally and inform all communities from a statistical perspective to prepare for health emergencies. Development-level standing modified the effects of equal access to COVID-19 vaccination on cumulative cases and mortality, for which countries of low or medium human development tended to fare worse in outcomes than high human development countries. As COVID-19 vaccination efforts evolve, healthcare professionals, scholars, and policymakers need to identify the structural impediments to equitable vaccination awareness, access, and uptake so that future vaccination campaigns are not impeded by these barriers to immunization. It is difficult to accurately measure parameters by using the traditional soft sensor algorithm when the working condition of industrial process is changed. Therefore, a transfer learning strategy is introduced based on geodesic flow kernel to solve this problem. At the same time, the method is optimized to solve the problems of dynamic characteristic extraction and incomplete Gaussian distribution in industrial process. The augmented matrix is first constructed to deal with the dynamic characteristics of the process. Independent component analysis and principal component analysis are performed on the processed data to extract the non-Gaussian and Gaussian information of the source domain and the target domain. Then, the non-Gaussian and Gaussian information of the source domain is adapted to the target domain respectively on the Grassmann manifold. Finally, the maximum mean discrepancy is used to measure the distribution between the source domain and the target domain after domain adaptation, and the calculated results are applied to construct the weight of the model based on the source domain after domain adaptation. The results show that the method not only reduces the difference of distribution between the source domain and the target domain, but also solves the problems of dynamic characteristic extraction and incomplete Gaussian distribution in industrial process. The validity and the practicability of the model are proved by experiments on Tennessee Eastman data.

Postnatal tissue quiescence is thought to be a default state in the absence of a proliferative stimulus such as injury. Although previous studies have demonstrated that certain embryonic developmental programs are reactivated aberrantly in adult organs to drive repair and regeneration, it is not well understood how quiescence is maintained in organs such as the lung, which displays a remarkably low level of cellular turnover. Here we demonstrate that quiescence in the adult lung is an actively maintained state and is regulated by hedgehog signalling. Epithelial-specific deletion of sonic hedgehog (Shh) during postnatal homeostasis in the murine lung results in a proliferative expansion of the adjacent lung mesenchyme. Hedgehog signalling is initially downregulated during the acute phase of epithelial injury as the mesenchyme proliferates in response, but returns to baseline during injury resolution as quiescence is restored. Activation of hedgehog during acute epithelial injury attenuates the proliferative expansion of the lung mesenchyme, whereas inactivation of hedgehog signalling prevents the restoration of quiescence during injury resolution. Finally, we show that hedgehog also regulates epithelial quiescence and regeneration in response to injury via a mesenchymal feedback mechanism. These results demonstrate that epithelial-mesenchymal interactions coordinated by hedgehog actively maintain postnatal tissue homeostasis, and deregulation of hedgehog during injury leads to aberrant repair and regeneration in the lung.
