A low noise linearly frequency modulated continuous wave laser source with a wide frequency bandwidth is demonstrated. By two-dimensional thermal tuning, the laser source shows 42 GHz continuous frequency tuning with 49.86 Hz intrinsic linewidth under static operation. For dynamical FMCW, the laser source has 10.25 GHz frequency bandwidth at 100 Hz chirped frequency and 5.56 GHz at 1 kHz chirped frequency. With pre-distortion linearization, it can distinguish 3 m length difference at 45 km distance in the fibre length measured experiment, which demonstrate a potential for application in ultra-long fibre sensing and FMCW LiDAR.

Calculating the spectral function of two dimensional systems is arguably one of the most pressing challenges in modern computational condensed matter physics. While efficient techniques are available in lower dimensions, two dimensional systems present insurmountable hurdles, ranging from the sign problem in quantum Monte Carlo (MC), to the entanglement area law in tensor network based methods. We hereby present a variational approach based on a Chebyshev expansion of the spectral function and a neural network representation for the wave functions. The Chebyshev moments are obtained by recursively applying the Hamiltonian and projecting on the space of variational states using a modified natural gradient descent method. We compare this approach with a modified approximation of the spectral function which uses a Krylov subspace constructed from the "Chebyshev wave-functions". We present results for the one-dimensional and two-dimensional Heisenberg model on the square lattice, and compare to those obtained by other methods in the literature., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figs

Clustering techniques attempt to group objects with similar properties into a cluster. Clustering the nodes of an attributed graph, in which each node is associated with a set of feature attributes, has attracted significant attention. Graph convolutional networks (GCNs) represent an effective approach for integrating the two complementary factors of node attributes and structural information for attributed graph clustering. However, oversmoothing of GCNs produces indistinguishable representations of nodes, such that the nodes in a graph tend to be grouped into fewer clusters, and poses a challenge due to the resulting performance drop. In this study, we propose a smoothness sensor for attributed graph clustering based on adaptive smoothness-transition graph convolutions, which senses the smoothness of a graph and adaptively terminates the current convolution once the smoothness is saturated to prevent oversmoothing. Furthermore, as an alternative to graph-level smoothness, a novel fine-gained node-wise level assessment of smoothness is proposed, in which smoothness is computed in accordance with the neighborhood conditions of a given node at a certain order of graph convolution. In addition, a self-supervision criterion is designed considering both the tightness within clusters and the separation between clusters to guide the whole neural network training process. Experiments show that the proposed methods significantly outperform 12 other state-of-the-art baselines in terms of three different metrics across four benchmark datasets. In addition, an extensive study reveals the reasons for their effectiveness and efficiency.

Ghost imaging is a fascinating framework which constructs the image of an object by correlating measurements between received beams and reference beams, none of which carries the structure information of the object independently. Recently, by taking into account space-time duality in optics, computational temporal ghost imaging has attracted attentions. Here, we propose a novel Fourier temporal ghost imaging (FTGI) scheme to achieve single-shot non-reproducible temporal signals. By sinusoidal coded modulation, ghost images are obtained and recovered by applying Fourier transformation. For demonstration, non-repeating events are detected with single-shot exposure architecture. It's shown in results that the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of FTGI is significantly better (13dB increase) than traditional temporal ghost imaging in the same condition. In addition, by using the obvious physical meaning of Fourier spectrum, we show some potential applications of FTGI, such as frequency division multiplexing demodulation in the visible light communications., Comment: 11pages, 8 figures

The novel camera architecture facilitates the development of machine vision. Instead of capturing frame sequences in the temporal domain as traditional video cameras, FourierCam directly measures the pixel-wise temporal spectrum of the video in single-shot through optical coding. Compared with the classic video cameras and time-frequency transformation pipeline, this programmable frequency-domain sampling strategy has an attractive combination of characteristics for low detection bandwidth, low-light imaging, low computational burden and low data volume. Based on the various temporal filter kernel designed by FourierCam, we demonstrated a series of exciting machine vision functions, such as video compression, background subtraction, object extraction, and trajectory tracking.

In this paper, a novel architecture of electro-optical neural networks based on the time-stretch method is proposed and numerically simulated. By stretching time-domain ultrashort pulses, multiplications of large scale weight matrices and vectors can be implemented on light and multiple-layer of feedforward neural network operations can be easily implemented with fiber loops. Via simulation, the performance of a three-layer electro-optical neural network is tested by the handwriting digit recognition task and the accuracy reaches 88% under considerable noise.

It is difficult to calculate the energy levels and eigenstates of a large physical system on a classical computer because of the exponentially growing size of the Hilbert space. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate a quantum algorithm which could solve this problem via simulated resonant transitions. Using a four-qubit quantum simulator in which two qubits are used as ancillas for control and measurement, we obtain the energy spectrum of a 2-qubit low-energy effective Hamiltonian of the water molecule. The simulated transitions allow the state of the quantum simulator to transform and access large regions of the Hilbert space, including states that have no overlap with the initial state. Furthermore, we make use of this algorithm to efficiently prepare specific eigenstates on the simulator according to the measured eigenenergies.

Recently three-dimensional (3D) imaging achieves tremendous success in consumer and industrial manufacturing. However, current 3D imaging methods rarely observe dynamical events happening in a short time interval due to the imaging speed limitation. Here we propose a time-encoded single-pixel 3D (TESP-3D) imaging method based on active infrared imaging with high-speed structured illumination, which can acquire the 3D information of dynamic events at an ultra-high frame rate. This method uses single-pixel photodetectors instead of conventional CCD or CMOS devices as the imaging sensors to overcome the image capturing speed limitation. As a proof of concept, we perform continuous real-time 3D scanning imaging at a record 500,000 fps and acquire 3D information of objects moving at a speed of up to 25 m/s. We anticipate that this technology will have important applications in industrial on-line inspection and high throughput 3D screening.
