Context: Conservation performance payment (CPP) is increasingly used to promote human–carnivore co-existence. The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) is a small felid, which suffers from high levels of anthropogenic mortality. In Taiwan, CPP has recently been introduced to stimulate leopard cat conservation in rural townships. A CPP scheme for leopard cats was pilot-tested in 2019, with the aim to enroll it to other rural townships in future. Aims: We determined whether CPP has a positive impact on attitudes towards leopard cat. To assess whether attitudes are species-specific, we compare attitudes towards leopard cat to attitudes towards other small carnivores, namely gem-faced civet (Paguma larvata) and ferret badger (Melogale moschata), and to pangolin (Manis pentadactyla), a species with a similar conservation status. On the basis of our results, we discuss whether leopard cat CPP is likely to benefit biodiversity preservation as a whole. Methods: We used a structured (pilot-tested) questionnaire to interview 164 respondents in three rural townships in which leopard cats occur in relatively high numbers compared to other townships. Key results: People felt more positive about leopard cat and pangolin, species that were seen as appealing and rare, than about gem-faced civet and ferret badger. Whether species were perceived as causing poultry depredation or agricultural losses was a main reason behind attitudes. Attitudes varied among townships. With CPP, attitudes towards all species became more positive. However, more than a quarter of the respondents were skeptical about the effectiveness of CPP. Conclusions and implications: On the basis of the species popularity and area requirements, leopard cats are a suitable flagship umbrella species. As such, leopard cat CPP is likely to promote biodiversity conservation in Taiwan, especially if other (unpopular) species are taken into account in the objectives of such a scheme. For CPP to be effective, it is important that such a program is participatory, has clear objectives, accurate systems to monitor program outcomes and provides sufficient long-term local benefits. Heterocysts, cells specialized in [N.sub.2] fixation in cyanobacteria, appeared at near to 2.1 Ga. They constitute one of the oldest forms of differentiated cells in evolution, and are thus an interesting model for studies on evolutionary-developmental biology. How heterocysts arose during evolution remains unknown. In Anabaena PCC 7120, heterocyst development requires, among other genes, hetR for the initiation of heterocyst differentiation, and patS, encoding a diffusible inhibitor of heterocyst formation. In this study, we report that both hetR and patS are widespread among filamentous cyanobacteria that do not form heterocysts or fix [N.sub.2]. hetR and patS are found in proximity on the chromosome in several cases, such as Arthrospira platensis, in which the level of HetR increased following nitrogen deprivation. The hetR gene of A. platensis could complement a hetR mutant of Anabaena PCC 7120, and patS of A. platensis could suppress heterocyst differentiation in Anabaena PCC 7120. Thus, key regulatory genes, including hetR and patS, involved in heterocyst development may have evolved before heterocysts appeared, suggesting that their function was not limited to heterocyst differentiation.

Stipa shanxiensis, a cryptic species within Stipa grandis that originated from central and western China, is described based on morphological, genomic, and ecological data from field and common garden experiments. Stipa shanxiensis morphologically resembles S. grandis, although phylogenetically it is closely related to the less morphologically similar Stipa baicalensis and Stipa krylovii. Of the eight significant morphological differences between S. shanxiensis and S. grandis, the two, cauline ligules longer than 2 cm with a filiform apex, and hairs shorter than 0.2 mm on the adaxial surface of the cauline uppermost leaves can be used to distinguish the species. Results from a common garden experiment verified that the two diagnostic characteristics were relatively stable and less morphologically plastic in response to environmental variation. Furthermore, a significant ecological divergence was found between S. shanxiensis and S. grandis, such that the former preferred warmer and more humid climates, and their predicted distribution was generally separated. Taken together, our results highlight that the integrative taxonomic approach was valuable for recognizing a new cryptic species in Stipa. In particular, we find that common garden experiments involving the effects of growth stage and characteristic position helped to morphologically diagnose cryptic species. These findings may also facilitate our understandings of ecological adaption and phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The filamentous cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 can fix [N.sub.2] under oxic conditions, and the activity of nitrogen fixation occurs exclusively in heterocysts, cells differentiated from vegetative cells in response to a limitation of a combined-nitrogen source in the growth medium. At the late stages of heterocyst differentiation, an envelope layer composed of two glycolipids is formed to limit the entry of oxygen so that the oxygen-sensitive nitrogenase can function. The genome of Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120 possesses a family of 13 genes (the hstK family), all encoding proteins with a putative Ser/Thr kinase domain at their N termini and a His-kinase domain at their C termini. In this study, we showed that the double mutant D4.3 strain, in which two members of this gene family, pkn44 (a!11625) and pkn30 (a113691), were both inactivated, failed to fix [N.sub.2] in the presence of oxygen ([Fox.sup.-]). In an environment without oxygen, a low level of nitrogenase activity was detectable ([Fix.sup.+]). Heterocyst development in the mutant D4.3 was delayed by 24 h and arrested at a relatively early stage without the formation of the glycolipid layer ([Hgl.sup.-]). Only the minor species of the two heterocystspecific glycolipids (HGLs) was missing in the mutant. We propose that Devil, a putative transcription factor, coordinates the synthesis of both HGLs, while Pkn44/Pkn30 and the previously characterized PrpJ may represent two distinct regulatory pathways involved in the synthesis of the minor HGL and the major HGL, respectively.
