Urban scene understanding and functional identification are essential for accurately characterizing the spatial structure and optimizing the city layouts during rapid urbanization. Multimodal data is important for recognizing the distribution patterns of urban functions and revealing internal details. Previous studies have focused primarily on remote sensing imagery and points of interest (POIs) data, overlooking the role of building characteristics in determining functions of urban scenes. These studies are also limited in terms of mining and fusing multimodal features. To address these challenges, this study proposes a multimodal fusion framework that integrates remote sensing imagery, POIs, and building footprints for urban scene understanding and functional mapping. The framework employs a dual-branch model that extracts visual semantic features from the remote sensing imagery and socioeconomic features from auxiliary data, such as POIs and building footprints. A branch attention module is designed to assign weights to dual-branch features. Additionally, a multiscale feature fusion module is introduced to extract and combine multiscale features through modal interaction. Experiments in Beijing and Chengdu validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework with overall accuracy of 90.04% and 92.07%, and kappa coefficient of 0.881 and 0.895, respectively. Introduction: Dental erosion and abrasion pose significant clinical challenges, often leading to exposed dentinal tubules and dentine demineralization. The aim of this study was to analyse the efficacy of quercetin-encapsulated hollow mesoporous silica nanocomposites (Q@HMSNs) on the prevention of dentine erosion and abrasion.Method: Q@HMSNs were synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for their biocompatibility. A total of 130 dentine specimens (2 mm × 2 mm × 2 mm) were prepared and randomly distributed into 5 treatment groups (n = 26): DW (deionized water, negative control), NaF (12.3 mg/mL sodium fluoride, positive control), Q (300 μg/mL quercetin), HMSN (5.0 mg/mL HMSNs), and Q@HMSN (5.0 mg/mL Q@HMSNs). All groups were submitted to in vitro erosive (4 cycles/d) and abrasive (2 cycles/d) challenges for 7 days. The specimens in the DW, NaF, and Q groups were immersed in the respective solutions for 2 min, while treatment was performed for 30 s in the HMSN and Q@HMSN groups. Subsequently, the specimens were subjected to additional daily erosion/abrasion cycles for another 7 days. The effects of the materials on dentinal tubule occlusion and demineralized organic matrix (DOM) preservation were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The penetration depth of rhodamine B fluorescein into the etched dentine was assessed using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The erosive dentine loss (EDL) and release of type I collagen telopeptide (ICTP) were measured. The data were analysed by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with post hoc Tukey’s test (α = 0.05).Results: Q@HMSNs were successfully synthesized and showed minimal toxicity to human dental pulp stem cells (HDPSCs) and gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). Q@HMSNs effectively occluded the dentinal tubules, resulting in a thicker DOM in the Q@HMSN group. The CLSM images showed more superficial penetration in the HMSN and Q@HMSN groups than in the quercetin, NaF, and DW groups. The Q@HMSN group exhibited a significantly lower EDL and reduced ICTP levels compared to the other groups (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Q@HMSNs hold promise for inhibiting dentine erosion and abrasion by promoting tubule occlusion and DOM preservation.

Abstract Background Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) continues to pose a significant threat to patient survival. Emerging evidence underscores the pivotal involvement of long non‐coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the cancer process. Nevertheless, our understanding of the roles and processes of lncRNAs in HCC remains limited. Methods The expression level of USP27X‐AS1 was assessed in an HCC patient cohort through a combination of bioinformatics analysis and qRT‐PCR. Subsequent biological experiments were conducted to delve into the functional aspects of USP27X‐AS1. Additional molecular biology techniques, including RNA pulldown and RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP), were employed to elucidate the potential mechanisms involving USP27X‐AS1 in HCC. Finally, CUT–RUN assay and other investigations were carried out to determine the factors contributing to the heightened expression of USP27X‐AS1 in HCC. Results High expression of the novel oncogene USP27X‐AS1 predicted poor prognosis in HCC patients. Further investigation confirmed that USP27X‐AS1 promoted the proliferation and metastasis of HCC by enabling USP7 to interact with AKT, which reduced level of AKT poly‐ubiquitylation and enhanced AKT protein stability, which improves protein stabilisation of AKT and promotes the progression of HCC. Moreover, we also revealed that SP1 binds to USP27X‐AS1 promoter to activate its transcription. Conclusions Novel oncogenic lncRNA USP27X‐AS1 promoted HCC progression via recruiting USP7 to deubiquitinate AKT. SP1 transcriptionally activated USP27X‐AS1 expression. These findings shed light on HCC and pointed to USP27X‐AS1 as a potential predictive biomarker and treatment target for the malignancy.

Abstract Aim The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic has had a substantial effect on frontline health care workers and caused public health nurses (PHNs) to come under various forms of pressure. PHNs face high‐risk challenges in their work environment, and their professional commitment and adaptability are key concerns. The aim of this qualitative study was to describe the experiences of PHNs during the COVID‐19 outbreak. Methods/Design Twenty PHNs who worked during the COVID‐19 outbreak were recruited from seven public health centres through posters. Data were collected through in‐depth interviews that comprised semi‐structured and open‐ended questions; subsequently, the data were analysed through content analysis. Results Three themes emerged from the study findings, namely (1) the disorderliness of COVID‐19 pandemic prevention work, (2) managing stress and fear, and (3) the establishment of a new normal. Because of the severity of the pandemic, the workload and stress associated with epidemic prevention policies continue to increase. PHNs may infect their family members and experience a sense of alienation and distance. They must also deal with irrationality and reactions in the people within their community. Conclusion Health department directors and policymakers should provide the necessary support and assistance to frontline pandemic prevention workers to increase the efficiency of pandemic prevention efforts. Ewing’s sarcoma, characterized by small round cell morphology, is a rare malignancy, with mediastinal Ewing’s sarcoma being even less common. This case describes a distinctive presentation of primary mediastinal Ewing’s sarcoma in a 32-year-old male presenting with sudden and severe chest pain. Initial evaluation excluded cardiac and pulmonary emergencies, revealing a posterior mediastinal mass through advanced imaging. The patient’s clinical symptoms significantly improved following the complete resection of the tumor via thoracoscopy. Subsequent analysis incorporating imaging, histological, immunohistochemical and genetic findings led to the conclusive diagnosis of primary mediastinal Ewing’s sarcoma.

Abstract Hypertension is characterized by endothelial dysfunction and arterial stiffness, which contribute to the pathogenesis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is an indispensable cofactor in all living cells that is involved in fundamental biological processes. However, in hypertensive patients, alterations in NAD+ levels and their relation with blood pressure (BP) elevation and vascular damage have not yet been studied. Here we reported that hypertensive patients exhibited lower NAD+ levels, as detected by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), in both peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) and aortas, which was parallel to vascular dysfunction. NAD+ boosting therapy with nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) supplement reduced BP and ameliorated vascular dysfunction in hypertensive patients (NCT04903210) and AngII-induced hypertensive mice. Upregulation of CD38 in endothelial cells led to endothelial NAD+ exhaustion by reducing NMN bioavailability. Pro-inflammatory macrophages infiltration and increase in IL-1β generation derived from pro-inflammatory macrophages resulted in higher CD38 expression by activating JAK1-STAT1 signaling pathway. CD38 KO, CD38 inhibitors treatment, or adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated endothelial CD38 knockdown lowered BP and improved vascular dysfunction in AngII-induced hypertensive mice. The present study demonstrated for the first time that endothelial CD38 activation and subsequently accelerated NAD+ degradation due to enhanced macrophage-derived IL-1β production was responsible for BP elevation and vascular damage in hypertension. NAD+ boosting therapy can be used as a novel therapeutic strategy for the management of hypertensive patients.

Abstract One important goal of the current Fenton-like catalysts is to develop highly efficient and pH-universal catalysts that can operate with little performance degradation over multiple recycles. Herein, we report a ternary MoCoB metallic glass (MG) microwire catalyst, which shows exceptional Fenton-like activity for degrading various dyes in a wide pH range (5–10). Moreover, the MoCoB MG catalyst with an ultrahigh glass-transition temperature of 1002 K exhibits excellent reusability and can be used for more than 46 times without a decay in efficiency. It is regarded that the excellent catalytic activity and sustainability of the MoCoB MG catalyst originates from the bimetallic effect involving Mo n /Mo n+1 and Co n+1/Co n cycling, which accelerates the electronic transfer kinetics, enabling the generation of multiple reactive oxygen species (•OH and •O2 -). First-Principles Calculations revealed again that MG catalysts provide a large electron base for the whole catalytic process.

Background: To evaluate the efficacy of stent-assisted coiling (SAC) for the treatment of carotid ophthalmic segment aneurysm segment aneurysms (OSAs) of the internal carotid artery (ICA) through detailed long-term follow-up of a large patient cohort. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 88 consecutive patients with OSAs between January 2009 and January 2020 ​at our center. Angiographic results were evaluated using the modified Raymond grading system and clinical outcomes were evaluated using the mRS scale. The primary endpoints were major aneurysm recurrence and poor clinical outcomes for at least 18 months of follow-up. The patients were asked to attend clinical follow-up assessments and possibly undergo DSA or MR via telephone. Results: We enrolled 88 patients with 99 OSAs treated with coiling, of whom 76 were treated with SAC. The coiling procedures were successful in all 88 patients. Overall, complications occurred in 8 patients (9.1%). No procedure-related mortality was observed. 67 (76.1%) experienced immediate aneurysm occlusion at the end of the procedure. Long-term angiographic follow-up (18 months) was available in 45/88 aneurysms (51%) (average 18.7 ​± ​5.2 months). Four patients continued their follow-up for 5 years after initial aneurysm treatment. After a clinical follow-up time of 28.7 months (range, 12–51 months), 85 patients (95.5%) achieved favorable clinical outcomes (mRS scores of 0–2). Conclusions: This study indicates that SAC treatment is a safe and effective therapeutic alternative for ruptured and unruptured OSAs. The procedural risks are low with relatively long-term effectiveness.

Abstract Low-cost particulate matter (PM) sensors have been widely used following recent sensor-technology advancements; however, inherent limitations of low-cost monitors (LCMs), which operate based on light scattering without an air-conditioning function, still restrict their applicability. We propose a regional calibration of LCMs using a multivariate Tobit model with historical weather and air quality data to improve the accuracy of ambient air monitoring, which is highly dependent on meteorological conditions, local climate, and regional PM properties. Weather observations and PM2.5 (fine inhalable particles with diameters ≤ 2.5 μm) concentrations from two regions in Korea, Incheon and Jeju, and one in Singapore were used as training data to build a visibility-based calibration model. To validate the model, field measurements were conducted by an LCM in Jeju and Singapore, where R2 and the error after applying the model in Jeju improved (from 0.85 to 0.88) and reduced by 44% (from 8.4 to 4.7 μg m−3), respectively. The results demonstrated that regional calibration involving air temperature, relative humidity, and other local climate parameters can efficiently correct the bias of the sensor. Our findings suggest that the proposed post-processing using the Tobit model with regional weather and air quality data enhances the applicability of LCMs.

Microsorum pteropus ‘Windeløv’ is a water fern from Asia commonly used in aquarium landscapes. This study aimed to develop a mass production method through the induction of green globular bodies (GGBs) from leaf explants of M. pteropus. Surface sterilization was performed on adventitious buds on the fronds of M. pteropus ‘Windeløv’ as explants. The results showed that the optimal explant disinfection condition was 1% sodium hypochlorite solution for 20 min, achieving a successful rate of 87.5 ± 9.6%. The most effective GGB induction was achieved with MS medium supplemented with 5.0 mg/L of NAA (1-Naphthaleneaceticacid) and 0.5 mg/L of 6-BA (6-benzylaminopurine), producing the highest number and size of GGBs, with a mean value of 4.0 ± 0.8 GGBs per explant and a diameter of 2.45 ± 0.61 mm after 8 weeks of culture. The regeneration of multiple sporophytes from the GGBs was only observed under hormone-free MS medium, with a mean value of 34.2 ± 7.3 sporophytes per GGB after 6 weeks of culture. Subsequently, rootless and separated sporophytes could be directly transplanted into the aquarium with a 100% survival rate.

A common goal of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) is to provide learning environments that adapt to the varying abilities and characteristics of users. This type of adaptivity is possible only if the ITS has information that characterizes the learning behaviors of its users and can adjust its pedagogy accordingly. This study investigated an intelligent tutoring system with computer agents ("AutoTutor") designed to improve comprehension skills in adults with low reading literacy. One goal of this study was to classify adults into different clusters based on their behavioral patterns (accuracy and response time to answer questions) while they interacted with AutoTutor to help them improve their reading comprehension skills. A second goal was to investigate whether adults' behaviors were associated with different reading components. A third goal was to assess improvements in reading comprehension skills, based on psychometric tests, of different clusters of readers. Performance on AutoTutor was collected in a targeted 100-hour hybrid intervention for adult readers (n = 252) that included both human teachers and the AutoTutor system. The adults' average accuracy and response time in AutoTutor were used to cluster the adults into four categories: higher performers (comparatively fast and accurate), conscientious readers (slow but accurate), under-engaged readers (fast at the expense of somewhat lower accuracy) and struggling readers (slow and inaccurate). Two psychometric tests of comprehension were used to assess comprehension. Gains in comprehension scores were highest for conscientious readers, lowest for struggling readers, with higher performing readers and under-engaged readers in between. This study investigates and compares the learning trajectories of nine Taiwanese university graduates from a Power Mechanical Engineering (PME) program and nine from a cross-disciplinary Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) program. Participants had received their degrees 4-7 years prior to the study. The findings suggest the relative advantages and disadvantages of different models of educational design. Even though PME graduates complained about the abstract nature of what they had learned during the first part of their undergraduate study, most had successfully entered labor markets related to the PME industry, having obtained appropriate knowledge/skills for application in industry from the latter part of the program. While some prioritized their identity as a PME professional, others admitted that they liked the extrinsic reward of a comfortable living best. In contrast, even though most of the HSS graduates admired the generic curriculum of the program, with its transferability from one context to another and its close connection to the real world, and some deeply identified with the core value of being an agent of societal change once they had entered the labor market, many also admitted that it was difficult to find a suitable industry to enter unless they first acquired a Master's degree with higher specificity.

Fluctuating superconductivity—vestigial Cooper pairing in the resistive state of a material—is usually associated with low dimensionality, strong disorder, or low carrier density. Here, we report single-particle spectroscopic, thermodynamic and magnetic evidence for persistent superconducting fluctuations in the heavily hole-doped cuprate superconductor () despite the high carrier density. With a sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo calculation, we show how a partially flat band at can help enhance superconducting phase fluctuations. Finally, we discuss the implications of an anisotropic band structure on the phase-coherence-limited superconductivity in overdoped cuprates and other superconductors.

Abstract Background Adiponectin is a key protein produced in adipose tissue, with crucial involvement in multiple metabolic processes. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), one of the phthalate compounds used as a plasticizer, has been shown to decrease adiponectin levels in vitro and in vivo studies. However, the role of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) gene polymorphism and epigenetic changes in the relationship between DEHP exposure and adiponectin levels is not well understood. Methods This study examined the correlation between urine levels of DEHP metabolite, epigenetic marker 5mdC/dG, ACE gene phenotypes, and adiponectin levels in a sample of 699 individuals aged 12–30 from Taiwan. Results Results showed a positive relationship between mono-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (MEHP) and 5mdC/dG, and a negative association between both MEHP and 5mdC/dG with adiponectin. The study found that the inverse relationship between MEHP and adiponectin was stronger when levels of 5mdC/dG were above the median. This was supported by differential unstandardized regression coefficients (− 0.095 vs. − 0.049, P value for interaction = 0.038)). Subgroup analysis also showed a negative correlation between MEHP and adiponectin in individuals with the I/I ACE genotype, but not in those with other genotypes, although the P value for interaction was borderline significant (0.06). The structural equation model analysis indicated that MEHP has a direct inverse effect on adiponectin and an indirect effect via 5mdC/dG. Conclusions In this young Taiwanese population, our findings suggest that urine MEHP levels are negatively correlated with serum adiponectin levels, and epigenetic modifications may play a role in this association. Further study is needed to validate these results and determine causality.

Abstract Plasmodium falciparum causes the most severe malaria in humans. Immunoglobulin M (IgM) serves as the first line of humoral defense against infection and potently activates the complement pathway to facilitate P. falciparum clearance. A number of P. falciparum proteins bind IgM, leading to immune evasion and severe disease. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unknown. Here, using high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy, we delineate how P. falciparum proteins VAR2CSA, TM284VAR1, DBLMSP, and DBLMSP2 target IgM. Each protein binds IgM in a different manner, and together they present a variety of Duffy-binding-like domain-IgM interaction modes. We further show that these proteins interfere directly with IgM-mediated complement activation in vitro, with VAR2CSA exhibiting the most potent inhibitory effect. These results underscore the importance of IgM for human adaptation of P. falciparum and provide critical insights into its immune evasion mechanism.

Abstract Background Identification of the motifs bound by a transcription factor (TF) is important to reveal the function of TF. Previously, we built a transcription factor centered yeast one hybrid (TF-Centered Y1H) that could identify the motifs bound by a target TF. However, that method was difficult to comprehensively identify all the motifs bound by a TF. Results Here, we build an improved TF-Centered Y1H to comprehensively determine the motifs bound by a target TF. Recombination-mediated cloning in yeast was performed to construct a saturated prey library that contains 7 random base insertions. After TF-Centered Y1H screening, all the positive clones were pooled together to isolate pHIS2 vector. The insertion regions of pHIS2 were PCR amplified and the PCR product was subjected to high-throughput sequencing. The insertion sequences were then retrieved and analyzed using MEME program to identify the potential motifs bound by the TF. Using this technology, we studied the motifs bound by an ethylene-responsive factor (BpERF2) from birch. In total, 22 conserved motifs were identified, and most of them are novel cis-acting elements. Both the yeast one hybrid and electrophoretic mobility shift assay verified that the obtained motifs could be bound by BpERF2. In addition, chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) study further suggested that the identified motifs can be bound by BpERF2 in cells of birch. These results together suggested that this technology is reliable and has biological significance. Conclusion This method will have wide application in DNA-protein interaction studies.

Background Handwriting synthesis techniques have been extensively studied in the detection of cognitive impairment in dementia and Parkinson's disease. But handwriting characteristics in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) still need to be studied further. Objective To explore the differences between the handwriting characteristics of elderly patients with MCI and normal elderly people, and to assess the value of handwriting features in MCI screening. Methods By use of convenience sampling, 33 older adults with MCI were recruited from Huzhou communities from January to April 2022 (observation group), and were compared to age-, sex- and education level-matched 43 community-living older adults with normal cognitive function (control group). The General Information Questionnaire, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Basic (MoCA-B), the Activity of Daily Living Scale (ADL), and the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) were used to survey subjects. Subjects were invited to complete six handwriting tasks (four are Chinese characters tasks and the other two are graphical drawing tasks) using a dot matrix digital pen to collect their kinematic parameters of handwriting. The classification accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of handwriting characteristics for the diagnosis of MCI were analyzed by discriminant analysis and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, and predictive values of different schemes for MCI were analyzed.
