Abstract

Domestic yak, cattle, and their hybrids are fundamental to herder survival at high altitudes on the Tibetan Plateau. However, little is known about their history. Bos remains are uncommon in this region, and ancient domestic yak have not been securely identified. To identify Bos taxa and investigate their initial management, we conducted zooarchaeological analyses of 193 Bos specimens and sequenced five nuclear genomes from recently excavated assemblages at Bangga. Morphological data indicated that more cattle than yak were present. Ancient mitochondrial DNA and nuclear genome sequences identified taurine cattle and provided evidence for domestic yak and yak-cattle hybridization ~2500 years ago. Reliance on diverse Bos species and their hybrid has increased cattle adaptation and herder resilience to plateau conditions. Abstract

The introduction of forage grass in poultry industry had double benefit on animals and the environment. In this study, three kinds of pastures were planted artificially to evaluate their roles through the determination of grass, chicken and soil-related indexes. The results showed that raising chickens under the forest could destroy vegetation and affect the chemical properties of soil negatively. Changes of soil caused by chickens can be alleviated through planting grass. Forage provided a certain food source for chickens without affecting the growth, slaughter properties, meat quality, immune indexes and other performances. Suitable pasture should have good regeneration ability, trampling resistance, good palatability, and do not cause harm to the health of chickens.

Abstract

The Tibetan chicken (Gallus gallus) provides high quality protein and iron for humans, which shows many phenotypic adaptations to the low oxygen. Study of the genetic mechanisms of circular RNAs (circRNAs) in hypoxia adaptation has not been reported. Four embryonic heart tissue samples from Tibetan chickens and Daheng broilers were collected. Differentially expressed circRNAs (DEcircRNAs) were identified via high-throughput sequencing. Bioinformatic analysis was used to indicate the functions and pathways of the DEcircRNAs. A total of 29 DEcircRNAs were identified between 4 Tibetan chickens and 4 Daheng broilers, including 15 upregulated and 14 downregulated DEcircRNAs in Tibetan chickens. GO analysis revealed that the DEcircRNAs were mainly involved in lung development or oxygen metabolism, such as ubiqunegative regulation of mesenchymal cell proliferation involved in lung development, oxidoreductase activity, and peroxisome. Pathway analysis showed that DEcircRNAs were mainly enriched in oxidative phosphorylation, tight junction, VEGF/MAPK/PPAR/Ras/PI3K-Akt signaling pathway. We also constructed a circRNA-miRNA-mRNA-pathway network to visualize the regulatory relationship associated with hypoxia adaptation of the tight junction pathways. The circRNA expression profile was obtained to complement the current Tibetan chicken circRNA database and provides new information for future studies into biological adaptation to hypoxic stress in the Tibetan chicken.

Abstract

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction into value‐added products holds great promise in moving toward carbon neutrality but remains a grand challenge due to lack of efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, the nucleophilic substitution reaction is elaborately harnessed to synthesize carbon nanoplates with a FeN4O configuration anchored onto graphene substrate (FeN4OC/Gr) through covalent linkages. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate the unique configuration of FeN4O with one oxygen (O) atom in the axial direction not only suppresses the competing hydrogen evolution reaction, but also facilitates the desorption of *CO intermediate compared with the commonly planar single‐atomic Fe sites. The FeN4OC/Gr shows excellent performance in the electroreduction of CO2 into carbon monoxide (CO) with an impressive Faradaic efficiency of 98.3% at −0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a high turnover frequency of 3511 h−1. Furthermore, as a cathode catalyst in an aqueous zinc (Zn)‐CO2 battery, the FeN4OC/Gr achieves a high CO Faradaic efficiency (≈91%) at a discharge current density of 3 mA cm−2 and long‐term stability over 74 h. This work opens up a new route to simultaneously modulate the geometric and electronic structure of single‐atomic catalysts toward efficient CO2 conversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

130. Automatic skin lesion classification using a novel densely connected convolutional network integrated with an attention module.

Abstract

Automated skin lesion classification in dermoscopy images remains challenging due to the existence of artefacts and intrinsic cutaneous features, diversity of lesion morphology, insufficiency of training data, and class imbalance problem. To address these challenges, we propose a new densely connected convolutional network termed AttDenseNet-121, which is obtained by integrating the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) into DenseNet-121. CBAM is a simple yet efficient attention module, which is further improved by adding a novel pooling layer (multiscale-pooling) to effectively enhance its attention capability. The optimized CBAM strengthens the representation power of DenseNet-121 by emphasizing meaningful features and suppressing unnecessary ones, thus significantly enhancing the classification performance. Besides, to handle the imbalanced dataset, we employ an improved focal loss function rather than the traditional cross-entropy loss function to train AttDenseNet-121. The improved focal loss is calculated from a different perspective compared with the original focal loss. It makes the distribution of positive samples and negative samples in each batch the same as that in the original data, successfully mitigating the negative influence of class imbalance on this multi-class classification task. We conduct extensive experiments on the public benchmark dataset (HAM10000) and the results indicate that our proposed method achieves superior performance compared with that of the baselines and state-of-the-art algorithms. In this paper, we define a new type restricted quantum group U ̄ q (s l 2 * ) and determine its Hopf Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt-deformations U ̄ q (s l 2 * , κ) in which U ̄ q (s l 2 * , 0) = U ̄ q (s l 2 * ) and the classical restricted Drinfeld–Jimbo quantum group U ̄ q (s l 2 ) is included. We show that U ̄ q (s l 2 * ) is a basic Hopf algebra, then uniformly realize U ̄ q (s l 2 * ) and U ̄ q (s l 2 ) via some quotients of (deformed) preprojective algebras corresponding to the Gabriel quiver of U ̄ q (s l 2 * ). Abstract

New Zealand white rabbits have been widely used to establish cartilage defect models, but there has been less research on stress analysis of the knee joint, and even less in cartilage defect models at different weight-bearing sites. A biomechanical model of the upper zone was established using finite element analysis. An animal model of cartilage defect was established to replicate minor trauma in different weight-bearing parts by simple surgery. The results showed that the stress in the posterior region of condyle was heavier than any weight-bearing areas, the stress in the posterior part of condyle was intermediate, the stress in the trochlear region was the smallest. The cartilage can be exposed by prolonging the medial surgical incision and then cartilage defects can be formed. Finite element analysis is an effective technique to study the mechanical properties of animal cartilage. Prolonging the medial incision can expose cartilage at different weight-bearing sites and establish a cartilage defect model.

Abstract

Objective: The etiology of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is still unknown. It has been demonstrated that normal endolymph metabolism is essential for inner ear function and that epithelial sodium channels (ENaC) may play an important role in the regulation of endolymphatic Na+. This study aimed to explore the potential association between αENaC p. Ala663Thr gene polymorphism and SSNHL.Methods: Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) was used to examine the genotype and allele frequency of the αENaC p. Ala663Thr polymorphism in 20 cases of low-frequency SSNHL (LF-SSNHL), 19 cases of high-frequency SSNHL (HF-SSNHL), 31 cases of all frequency SSNHL (AF-SSNHL), 42 cases of profound deafness SSNHL (PD-SSNHL), and 115 normal controls.Results: The T663 allele was found to be significantly associated with an increased risk of LF-SSNHL (p = 0.046, OR = 2.16, 95% CI = 1.01–4.62). The TT genotype and T663 allele, on the other hand, conferred a protective effect for PD-SSNHL (AA vs. TT: p = 0.012, OR = 0.25, 95% CI = 0.08–0.74; A vs. T: p = 0.001, OR = 0.36, 95% CI = 0.21–0.61). However, there was no statistically significant difference in genotype or allele frequency between the two groups (HF-SSNHL and AF-SSNHL) and the control group.Conclusion: The αENaC p. Ala663Thr gene polymorphism plays different roles in different types of SSNHL.
