Abstract

When an event occurs, it attracts attention of information sources to publish related documents along its lifespan. The task of event detection is to automatically identify events and their related documents from a document stream, which is a set of chronologically ordered documents collected from various information sources. Generally, each event has a distinct activeness development so that its status changes continuously during its lifespan. When an event is active, there are a lot of related documents from various information sources. In contrast when it is inactive, there are very few documents, but they are focused. Previous works on event detection did not consider the characteristics of the event's activeness, and used rigid thresholds for event detection. We propose a concept called life profile, modeled by a hidden Markov model, to model the activeness trends of events. In addition, a general event detection framework, LIPED, which utilizes the learned life profiles and the burst-and-diverse characteristic to adjust the event detection thresholds adaptively, can be incorporated into existing event detection methods. Based on the official TDT corpus and contest rules, the evaluation results show that existing detection methods that incorporate LIPED achieve better performance in the cost and F1 metrics, than without. Abstract

An event can be described by a sequence of chronological documents from several information sources that together describe a story or happening. The goal of event detection and tracking is to automatically identify events and their associated documents during their life cycles. Conventional document clustering and classification techniques cannot effectively detect and track sequential events, as they ignore the temporal relationships among documents related to an event. The life cycle of an event is analogous to living beings. With abundant nourishment (i.e., related documents for the event), the life cycle is prolonged; conversely, an event or living fades away when nourishment is exhausted. Improper tracking algorithms often unnecessarily prolong or shorten the life cycle of detected events. In this paper, we propose an aging theory to model the life cycle of sequential events, which incorporates a traditional single-pass clustering algorithm to detect and track events. Our experiment results show that the proposed method achieves a better overall performance for both long-running and short-term events than previous approaches. Moreover, we find that the aging parameters of the aging schemes are profile dependent and that using proper profile-specific aging parameters improves the detection and tracking performance further. 130. Anastomosing Hemangioma of the Nasal Cavity.

Abstract

Anastomosing hemangioma (AH) is an uncommon benign vascular neoplasm first described in the genitourinary tract. Symptomatically and histologically mimicking malignant angiosarcoma, a few rare cases have been described in the nonrenal genitourinary tract. Here, we report a 37-year-old man with a nasal AH and epistaxis. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of AH reported in the nasal cavity. Abstract

Tumor‐associated macrophages (TAMs) are a major component of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and are key cells in regulating tumor development, metastasis, immune responses, inflammation, and chemoresistance. In response to TME stimulation, circulating monocytes are recruited and differentiated as TAMs. Most TAMs are defined as alternatively activated (M2) phenotype to create immunosuppressive TME and support tumor progression. In contrast, classically activated (M1) TAMs can produce pro‐inflammatory cytokines and enhance immune responses against tumor development. Autophagy is a conserved catabolic process to control cellular homeostasis and biological function. Emerging evidence reveals crucial contribution of autophagy in modulating TAM plasticity and functional polarization in TME. In this review, we introduce the current understanding of autophagy‐regulated TAM function in development of cancer. We focus on how autophagy modulates antigen presentation, LC3‐associated phagocytosis, cytokine secretion, inflammasome regulation, recruitment, differentiation, and polarization of TAMs and suggest strategies for potential therapeutics by targeting autophagy in TAMs. We expect this review can provide a new notion of future cancer immunotherapy. 133. Infected liver cysts resulting from ascending cholangitis and cancer of the ampulla of Vater: A case report

Abstract

Infected liver cysts may have a unique etiology and require further workup. Generally, large cyst is easy to be symptomatic. In contrast, smaller cyst with infection in our case is associated with ampullar cancer of Vater without typical manifestations of jaundice, body weight loss, and pancreatitis. We presented the case of a 61‐year‐old man with infected liver cysts, which is confirmed by abdominal computer tomography and liver cysts drainage with bacterial culture. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography revealed a swollen papilla of Vater and a dilated common bile duct. Biopsy confirmed adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater. Further surgical pathology revealed communication of bile duct with liver cysts and no evidence of tumor invasion to pancreatic duct and common bile duct. The infected liver cysts may result from ascending cholangitis which is secondary to ampullar cancer. The patient underwent the Whipple procedure, unroofing of the right‐side liver cyst, and partial hepatectomy without complications. There is no recurrence of infected liver cyst and cancer till now after follow‐up for 3 years. Infected liver cysts are rarely associated with ampullar cancer. Early diagnosis and successful resection of early stage ampullary neoplasm ensure favorable outcomes.

Abstract

With the rise of global competition and the focus on teacher quality, teacher professional development is becoming increasingly crucial, and the stress and challenges for principals are more severe than ever. Teachers can improve their professional abilities through principals’ instructional supervision and their own knowledge-management (KM) behaviors to benefit students. Thus, this chapter analyzes the relationship among principals’ instructional supervision, teachers’ KM, and teachers’ professional development. The author believes that principals’ instructional supervision and effective KM can facilitate the professional development of teachers. The author also believes the readers can know the relationships among them, and teachers’ professional development can be improved through principal’s instructional supervision and teachers’ KM behaviors.

Abstract

Aims: USP6 rearrangement underpins self‐limiting fibroblastic/myofibroblastic neoplasms, including nodular fasciitis (NF), myositis ossificans (MO), aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC), and related variants. The aim of this study was to characterise UPS6 and fusion partners in order to delineate the clinicopathological, genetic and bone‐forming features in such lesions of soft tissue (ST). Methods and results: Break‐apart fluorescence in‐situ hybridisation (FISH) validated USP6 rearrangement in 31 of 35 NF [comprising three of three fasciitis ossificans (FO) cases, seven of eight cellular variant of fibroma of tendon sheath (C‐FTS), four of six MO, three of three ST‐ABC, and two of two fibro‐osseous pseudotumours of digits (FOPD)]. As determined with FISH and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, MYH9–USP6 was the commonest fusion in four C‐FTS and 20 NF, including one intravascular case and two infantile (one retroperitoneal) cases. The presence of MYH9–USP6 confirmed the diagnosis of two NFs> 50 mm with prominent ischaemic necrosis. COL1A1–USP6 was predominant in ossifying lesions, including all FO, MO, ST‐ABC and FOPD with identified partner genes, and was also present in non‐ossifying head and neck NF (HN‐NF) and C‐FTS in two cases each. A cervical NF of a 14‐month‐old girl harboured the novel COL1A2–USP6. Ossifying lesions showed considerable genetic and morphological overlaps. Sharing COL1A1–USP6, FO and FOPD showed similar central or haphazard bone matrix deposition. Besides zonation of outward bone maturation, four COL1A1–USP6‐positive MO had incipient to sieve‐like pseudocysts reminiscent of ST‐ABC. Conclusion: MYH9–USP6 is present in some C‐FTS and most NF, including rare variants, but is unrelated to bone formation. All bone‐forming USP6‐rearranged lesions adopt COL1A1 as the 5′ partner, indicating close genetic kinships. However, COL1A1/COL1A2 also contributes to the pathogenesis of minor subsets of non‐ossifying USP6‐rearranged HN‐NF and C‐FTS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
