Abstract: Atomic-level qubits in silicon are attractive candidates for large-scale quantum computing; however, their quantum properties and controllability are sensitive to details such as the number of donor atoms comprising a qubit and their precise location. This work combines machine learning techniques with million-atom simulations of scanning tunnelling microscopic (STM) images of dopants to formulate a theoretical framework capable of determining the number of dopants at a particular qubit location and their positions with exact lattice site precision. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was trained on 100,000 simulated STM images, acquiring a characterisation fidelity (number and absolute donor positions) of >98% over a set of 17,600 test images including planar and blurring noise commensurate with experimental measurements. The formalism is based on a systematic symmetry analysis and feature-detection processing of the STM images to optimise the computational efficiency. The technique is demonstrated for qubits formed by single and pairs of closely spaced donor atoms, with the potential to generalise it for larger donor clusters. The method established here will enable a high-precision post-fabrication characterisation of dopant qubits in silicon, with high-throughput potentially alleviating the requirements on the level of resources required for quantum-based characterisation, which will otherwise be a challenge in the context of large qubit arrays for universal quantum computing.

Abstract: The Simons Observatory (SO) is an upcoming cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment located on Cerro Toco, Chile, that will map the microwave sky in temperature and polarization in six frequency bands spanning 27 to 285 GHz. SO will consist of one 6-m large aperture telescope fielding $$\sim$$ 30,000 detectors and an array of three 0.42-m small aperture telescopes (SATs) fielding an additional 30,000 detectors. This synergy will allow for the extremely sensitive characterization of the CMB over angular scales ranging from an arcmin to tens of degrees, enabling a wide range of scientific output. Here we focus on the SATs targeting degree angular scales with successive dichroic instruments observing at mid-frequency (MF: 93/145 GHz), ultra-high-frequency (UHF: 225/285 GHz), and low-frequency (LF: 27/39 GHz). The three SATs will be able to map $$\sim$$ 10% of the sky to a noise level of $$\sim$$ $$2\,\upmu {\hbox {K}}$$ -arcmin when combining 93 and 145 GHz. The multiple frequency bands will allow the CMB to be separated from galactic foregrounds (primarily synchrotron and dust), with the primary science goal of characterizing the primordial tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, at a target level of $$\sigma (r) \approx 0.003$$ .

Abstract: LiteBIRD has been selected as JAXA's strategic large mission in the 2020s, to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) $B$-mode polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. The challenges of LiteBIRD are the wide field-of-view (FoV) and broadband capabilities of millimeter-wave polarization measurements, which are derived from the system requirements. The possible paths of stray light increase with a wider FoV and the far sidelobe knowledge of $-56$ dB is a challenging optical requirement. A crossed-Dragone configuration was chosen for the low frequency telescope (LFT : 34--161 GHz), one of LiteBIRD's onboard telescopes. It has a wide field-of-view ($18^\circ \times 9^\circ$) with an aperture of 400 mm in diameter, corresponding to an angular resolution of about 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. The focal ratio f/3.0 and the crossing angle of the optical axes of 90$^\circ$ are chosen after an extensive study of the stray light. The primary and secondary reflectors have rectangular shapes with serrations to reduce the diffraction pattern from the edges of the mirrors. The reflectors and structure are made of aluminum to proportionally contract from warm down to the operating temperature at $5\,$K. A 1/4 scaled model of the LFT has been developed to validate the wide field-of-view design and to demonstrate the reduced far sidelobes. A polarization modulation unit (PMU), realized with a half-wave plate (HWP) is placed in front of the aperture stop, the entrance pupil of this system. A large focal plane with approximately 1000 AlMn TES detectors and frequency multiplexing SQUID amplifiers is cooled to 100 mK. The lens and sinuous antennas have broadband capability. Abstract: Bioinformatic analysis is an integral and critical part of clinical next-generation sequencing. It is especially challenging for some pipelines to consistently identify insertions and deletions. We present the validation of an open source tumor amplicon pipeline (OTA-pipeline) for clinical next-generation sequencing targeting solid tumor-associated variants. Raw data generated from 557 TruSight Tumor 26 samples and in silico data were analyzed by the OTA-pipeline and legacy pipeline and compared. Discrepant results were confirmed by orthogonal methods. The OTA-pipeline reported 22 variants that were not detected by the previously validated pipeline, including seven synonymous or intronic single-nucleotide variants, five single-nucleotide variants at frequency5%, one insertion, and nine deletions. Variant allele frequencies reported by the two pipelines were highly concordant, although a few significant discrepancies were present. Analysis of in silico FASTQ files demonstrated a higher sensitivity of detecting complex insertions and deletions with the OTA-pipeline. The higher sensitivity came at a cost, because false-positive calls were increased in difficult-to-sequence regions. However, these calls were all flagged by our strand bias filter, distinguishing them from true variants. Our validation process provides a model for laboratories that want to establish an in-house bioinformatics pipeline for clinical next-generation sequencing.

Abstract: Generating and detecting genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) of sizeable quantum states prepared on physical devices is an important benchmark for highlighting the progress of near-term quantum computers. A common approach to certify GME is to prepare a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and measure a GHZ fidelity of at least 0.5. We measure the fidelities using multiple quantum coherences of GHZ states on 11 to 27 qubits prepared on the IBM Quantum ibmq_montreal device. Combinations of quantum readout error mitigation (QREM) and parity verification error detection are applied to the states. A fidelity of $0.546 \pm 0.017$ was recorded for a 27-qubit GHZ state when QREM was used, demonstrating GME across the full device with a confidence level of 98.6%. We benchmarked the effect of parity verification on GHZ fidelity for two GHZ state preparation embeddings on the heavy-hexagon architecture. The results show that the effect of parity verification, while relatively modest, led to a detectable improvement of GHZ fidelity., 16 pages, 7 figures. Abstract: Aim: We conducted a genome-wide association study using the Illumina Exome Array to identify coding SNPs that may explain additional warfarin dose variability. Patients & methods: Analysis was performed after adjustment for clinical variables and genetic factors known to influence warfarin dose among 1680 warfarin users (838 European–Americans and 842 African–Americans). Replication was performed in an independent sample. Results: We confirmed the influence of known genetic variants on warfarin dose variability. Our study is the first to show the association between rs12772169 and warfarin dose in African–Americans. In addition, genes COX15 and FGF5 showed significant association in European–Americans. Conclusion: We identified some novel genes/SNPs that underpin warfarin dose response. Further replication is needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract: We provide numerical evidence that the quantum Fourier transform can be efficiently represented in a matrix product operator with a size growing relatively slowly with the number of qubits. Additionally, we numerically show that the tensors in the operator converge to a common tensor as the number of qubits in the transform increases. Together these results imply that the application of the quantum Fourier transform to a matrix product state with n qubits of maximum Schmidt rank χ can be simulated in O(n (log(n))2 χ 2 ) time. We perform such simulations and quantify the error involved in representing the transform as a matrix product operator and simulating the quantum Fourier transform of periodic states.

Abstract: Study objective The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of epsilon-aminocaproic acid (eACA) and tranexamic acid (TXA) in contemporary clinical practice during a national medication shortage. Design A retrospective cohort study. Setting The study was performed in all consecutive cardiac surgery patients (n=128) admitted to the cardiac-surgical intensive care unit after surgery at a single academic center immediately before and during a national medication shortage. Measurements Demographic, clinical, and outcomes data were compared by descriptive statistics using χ 2 and t test. Surgical drainage and transfusions were compared by multivariate linear regression for patients receiving eACA before the shortage and TXA during the shortage. Main results In multivariate analysis, no statistical difference was found for surgical drain output (OR 1.10, CI 0.97–1.26, P =.460) or red blood cell transfusion requirement (OR 1.79, CI 0.79–2.73, P =.176). Patients receiving eACA were more likely to receive rescue hemostatic medications (OR 1.62, CI 1.02–2.55, P =.041). Conclusions Substitution of eACA with TXA during a national medication shortage produced equivalent postoperative bleeding and red cell transfusions, although patients receiving eACA were more likely to require supplemental hemostatic agents.

Abstract: Using only cosmic microwave background polarization data from the POLARBEAR experiment, we measure $B$-mode polarization delensing on subdegree scales at more than $5\sigma$ significance. We achieve a 14% $B$-mode power variance reduction, the highest to date for internal delensing, and improve this result to 2% by applying for the first time an iterative maximum a posteriori delensing method. Abstract: We present a measurement of the $B$-mode polarization power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using taken from July 2014 to December 2016 with the POLARBEAR experiment. The CMB power spectra are measured using observations at 150 GHz with an instantaneous array sensitivity of $\mathrm{NET}_\mathrm{array}=23\, \mu \mathrm{K} \sqrt{\mathrm{s}}$ on a 670 square degree patch of sky centered at (RA, Dec)=($+0^\mathrm{h}12^\mathrm{m}0^\mathrm{s},-59^\circ18^\prime$). A continuously rotating half-wave plate is used to modulate polarization and to suppress low-frequency noise. We achieve $32\,\mu\mathrm{K}$-$\mathrm{arcmin}$ effective polarization map noise with a knee in sensitivity of $\ell = 90$, where the inflationary gravitational wave signal is expected to peak. The measured $B$-mode power spectrum is consistent with a $\Lambda$CDM lensing and single dust component foreground model over a range of multipoles $50 \leq \ell \leq 600$. The data disfavor zero $C_\ell^{BB}$ at $2.2\sigma$ using this $\ell$ range of POLARBEAR data alone. We cross-correlate our data with Planck high frequency maps and find the low-$\ell$ $B$-mode power in the combined dataset to be consistent with thermal dust emission. We place an upper limit on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r < 0.90$ at 95% confidence level after marginalizing over foregrounds.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The Joint Commission lists improving staff communication (handoffs) as part of several National Safety Goals. In this study, we developed an electronic web-based charting system for clinical pathology handoffs, which primarily consist of transfusion medicine calls, and evaluated the advantages over a paper-based handwritten call log. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A secure online web browser application using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) was designed to document on-call pathology resident consults. A year after implementation, an online survey was administered to our pathology residents in order to evaluate and compare the usability of the electronic application (e-consults) to the previous handwritten call log, which was a notebook where trainees hand wrote different components of the consult. RESULTS: The REDCap web-based application includes discrete fields for patients’ information, requesting physician contact, type of consult, action items for follow-up and faculty responses, as well as other information. These components have eventually progressed to be an online consult call catalog. With approximately 1079 consults per year, transfusion medicine-related calls account for ~90% of the encounters, while clinical chemistry, microbiology and immunology calls constitute the remainder. The overall response rate of the survey was 96% (29 of 30 participants). Of the 16 respondents who experienced both call log systems, 100% responded that REDCap was an improvement over the handwritten call log (P < 0·0001). CONCLUSION: E-consult documentation entered into a web-based application was a user-friendly, secure clinical information access and effective handoff system as compared to a paper-based handwritten call log.

Abstract: Towards realising larger scale quantum algorithms, the ability to prepare sizeable multi-qubit entangled states with full qubit control is used as a benchmark for quantum technologies. We investigate the extent to which entanglement is found within a prepared graph state on the 20-qubit superconducting quantum computer, IBM Q Poughkeepsie. We prepared a graph state along a path consisting of all twenty qubits within Poughkeepsie and performed full quantum state tomography on all groups of four connected qubits along this path. We determined that each pair of connected qubits was inseparable and hence the prepared state was entangled. Additionally, a genuine multipartite entanglement witness was measured on all qubit subpaths of the graph state and we found genuine multipartite entanglement on chains of up to three qubits., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: Quantum system characterization techniques represent the front line in the identification and mitigation of noise in quantum computing, but can be expensive in terms of quantum resources and time to repeatedly employ. Another challenging aspect is that parameters governing the performance of various operations tend to drift over time, and monitoring these is hence a difficult task. One of the most promising characterization techniques, gate set tomography (GST), provides a self-consistent estimate of the completely positive, trace-preserving (CPTP) maps for a complete set of gates, as well as preparation and measurement operators. We develop a method for performance optimization seeded by tomography (POST), which couples the power of GST with a classical optimization routine to achieve a consistent gate improvement in just a short number of steps within a given calibration cycle. By construction, the POST procedure finds the best available gate operation given the hardware, and is therefore robust to the effects of drift. Further, in comparison to other quantum error mitigation techniques, it builds upon a one-time application of GST. To demonstrate the performance of this method on a real quantum computer, we map out the operations of six qubit pairs on the superconducting \emph{ibmq\_poughkeepsie} quantum device. Under the restriction of logical-only control, we monitor the performance of the POST approach on a chosen CNOT gate over a period of six weeks. In this time, we achieve a consistent improvement in gate fidelity, averaging a fidelity increase of 21.1\% as measured by randomized benchmarking. Abstract: Purpose Malnutrition can result in worse clinical outcomes following ventricular assist device (VAD) and heart transplantation (HT). Hemodynamic instability often leads to delays in optimal nutrition and increases the risk of iatrogenic malnutrition. In these settings, the exclusive or supplemental use of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) may enhance nutrition provision and avoid enteral nutrition (EN)-related complications. Nutrition screening and protocols may serve as a solution to address these issues by improving safety and delivery of EN/TPN in ICU settings. Methods Data were extracted from electronic medical records pre (2014-2016) and post (2017-2019) protocol implementation. The high-risk enteral nutrition guidelines (HRENG) were introduced in the setting of hemodynamic instability after VAD or HT: cardiogenic shock, need for ECMO, balloon pump, temporary mechanical support. Preoperative nutrition screenings were implemented to strengthen HRENG adherence. We assessed calorie/protein delivery POD 1-14, % of nutrition needs met, TPN start/end day, central line associated blood infection (CLABSI), ICU and total length of stay (LOS) and mortality rate. Results A total of 113 patients who met criteria of the HRENG were included. We compared 62 patients prior to the protocol to 51 managed after protocol implementation. Average 14 day calorie/protein deficits decreased (P Conclusion The implementation of preoperative nutrition screenings in conjunction with HRENG may not only facilitate earlier TPN initiation and decrease nutrient deficits, but decrease ICU LOS. Enhanced TPN use was not associated with higher CLABSI rates.

Abstract: Imaging the atomic structure of a single biomolecule is an important challenge in the physical biosciences. Whilst existing techniques all rely on averaging over large ensembles of molecules, the single-molecule realm remains unsolved. Here we present a protocol for 3D magnetic resonance imaging of a single molecule using a quantum spin probe acting simultaneously as the magnetic resonance sensor and source of magnetic field gradient. Signals corresponding to specific regions of the molecule's nuclear spin density are encoded on the quantum state of the probe, which is used to produce a 3D image of the molecular structure. Quantum simulations of the protocol applied to the rapamycin molecule (C51H79NO13) show that the hydrogen and carbon substructure can be imaged at the angstrom level using current spin-probe technology. With prospects for scaling to large molecules and/or fast dynamic conformation mapping using spin labels, this method provides a realistic pathway for single-molecule microscopy., Single spin defects can allow high-resolution sensing of molecules under an applied magnetic field. Here, the authors propose a protocol for three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging with angstrom-level resolution exploiting the dipolar field of a spin qubit, such as a diamond nitrogen-vacancy.

Abstract: Certain antithrombotic drugs exhibit high patient-to-patient variability that significantly impacts the safety and efficacy of therapy. Pharmacogenetics offers the possibility of tailoring drug treatment to patients based on individual genotypes, and this type of testing has been recommended for 2 oral antithrombotic agents, warfarin and clopidogrel, to influence use and guide dosing. Limited studies have identified polymorphisms that affect the metabolism and activity of newer oral antithrombotic drugs, without clear evidence of the clinical relevance of such polymorphisms. This article provides an overview of the current status of pharmacogenetics in oral antithrombotic therapy.

The foundations of molecular pathology are presented as a series of goals and objectives that residency programs can use to develop their educational programs. As pathologists continue to expand their roles to include regular clinical consultations in the realm of molecular testing, a strong foundation in molecular pathology and genomic medicine has become essential to the practice of pathology.

Abstract: Objective The p.V433M in cytochrome P450 4F2 (rs2108622, CYP4F2*3) is associated with a higher warfarin dose and lower risk of hemorrhage among European Americans. We evaluate the influence of CYP4F2*3 on warfarin dose, time to target international normalized ratio (INR), and stable dose, proportion of time spent in target range (PTTR), as well as the risk of overanticoagulation and hemorrhage among European and African Americans. Design CYP4F2*3 was genotyped in 1238 patients initiated on warfarin in a prospective inception cohort. Multivariable linear regression was used to assess warfarin dose and PTTR; proportional hazards analysis was performed to evaluate time to target INR and stable dose, overanticoagulation, and hemorrhage. Setting Two outpatient anticoagulation clinics. Participants A total of 1238 anticoagulated patients. Outcomes Warfarin dose (mg/day), time to target INR and stable dose, PTTR, overanticoagulation (INR more than 4), and major hemorrhage. Results Minor allele frequency for the CYP4F2*3 variant was 30.3% among European Americans and 8.4% among African Americans. CYP4F2*3 was associated with higher dose among European Americans but not African Americans. Compared to CYP4F2*1/*1, *1/*3 was associated with a statistically nonsignificant increase in dose (4.5%, p=0.22) and *3/*3 was associated with a statistically significant increase in dose (13.2%, p=0.02). CYP4F2 genotype did not influence time to target INR, time to stable dose, or PTTR in either race group. CYP4F2*3/*3 was associated with a 31% lower risk of over anticoagulation (p=0.06). Incidence of hemorrhage was lower among participants with CYP4F2 *3/*3 compared with *1/*3 or *1/*1 (incidence rate ratio = 0.45, 95% confidence interval 0.14–1.11, p=0.09). After controlling for covariates, CYP4F2 *3/*3 was associated with a 52% lower risk of hemorrhage, although this was not statistically significant (p=0.24). Conclusion Possession of CYP4F2*3 variant influences warfarin dose among European Americans but not African Americans. The CYP4F2-dose, CYP4F2-overanticoagulation, and CYP4F2-hemorrhage association follows a recessive pattern with possession of CYP4F2*3/*3 genotype likely demonstrating a protective effect. These findings need further confirmation.

Abstract: Patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) have improved survival after heart-lung transplantation (HLT) and double-lung transplantation (DLT). However, the optimal procedure for patients with IPAH undergoing transplantation remains unclear. We hypothesized that critically ill IPAH patients, defined by admission to the intensive care units (ICU), would demonstrate improved survival with HLT vs. DLT. All adult IPAH patients (>18 yr) in the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients (SRTR) database, who underwent either HLT or DLT between 1987 and 2012, were included. Baseline characteristics, survival, and adjusted survival were compared between the HLT and DLT groups. Similar analyses were performed for the subgroups as defined by the recipients' hospitalization status. A total of 928 IPAH patients (667 DLT, 261 HLT) were included in this analysis. The HLT recipients were younger, more likely to be admitted to the ICU, and have had their transplant in previous eras. Overall, the adjusted survivals after HLT or DLT were similar. For recipients who were hospitalized in the ICU, DLT was associated with worse outcomes (HR 1.827; 95% CI 1.018-3.279). In IPAH patients, the overall survival after HLT or DLT is comparable. HLT may provide improved outcomes in critically ill IPAH patients admitted to the ICU at time of transplantation.

Abstract: We report the development of a large-diameter superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) used in a continuously rotating cryogenic half-wave plate (HWP) polarization modulator for cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiments. A precise measurement of the CMB polarization will place tighter constrains on cosmic inflation, describing the rapid expansion of the early universe. The polarization modulator is a critical instrument for suppressing 1/f contamination, which is mainly caused by atmospheric noise, and for mitigating systematic uncertainties that arise when differencing orthogonal polarization detectors. To ensure a sufficient field of view and to reduce thermal emission, the polarization modulator must have a clear-aperture diameter of > 500 mm and must operate at cryogenic temperatures. We constructed a superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) with an inner diameter of 550 mm, which is the largest used in any CMB polarization experiment to date. We tested the friction and stiffness of the bearing at liquid nitrogen temperatures. The measured total loss is 0.4 W and the spring constant is >105 N/m, which satisfies typical experimental requirements. Furthermore, we performed a performance test by changing the number of disk-shaped YBCO tiles, and then confirmed that the SMB performance was proportional to the YBCO volume.

Abstract: Mechanical circulatory support (MCS) involves the use of intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), short-term percutaneous ventricular assist devices, long-term surgically implanted continuous-flow ventricular assist devices (cf-LVADs), and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for the treatment of acute and chronic heart failure and cardiogenic shock. IABP is increasingly recognized as an important adjunct in the postoperative treatment arsenal for those patients with severely reduced left ventricular systolic function. Short-term percutaneous options for the treatment of acute right and left heart failure include both the Impella and Tandem Heart, whereas the Centrimag is often used in the surgical setting for acute cardiogenic shock and heart failure. Long-term surgical MCS options include the total artificial heart and the cf-LVADs HeartWare and Heartmate II. ECMO is frequently used for the treatment of acute cardiogenic shock and may be placed peripherally via a percutaneous approach or with central cannulation. ECMO is also increasingly used in the setting of acute cardiac life support, known as extracorporeal life support. Abstract: Management of asymptomatic small well-differentiated (panNET)2 cm remains controversial. A consensus conference was held on this topic. The impact of attending the conference and participating in the audience response survey on surgeon's clinical approach to pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors was assessed.Audience members were surveyed using a smartphone real-time response system at the beginning and end of the conference.The majority of 75 attendees underwent fellowship training, and 30% had10 years experience as attending surgeons. Previously published consensus statements on the topic were considered insufficient to guide surgical practice by 82% of attendees, and over 96% desired additional data. After review of the data, consensus statements, and decision-making process, a significant number of participants changed their opinions regarding indications for tissue biopsy (p = 0.001), size thresholds for excision (p = 0.002), and regional lymph node dissection (p = 0.002) independent of whether a consensus was reached by the content-expert panel.This represented the first Delphi process consensus on the topic, and the survey confirmed the topic as well-chosen and timely. Attendees changed opinions on management of panNET regardless of whether formal consensus was reached. Therefore, statements of consensus combined with presentation of literature and live discussion served to impact attendees' approach to this disease.

Abstract: To evaluate all patients who received gentamicin for open fracture treatment and determine the incidence of, and risk factors for, kidney injury in this population.Retrospective, case control.Single institution; Level 1 trauma center.A retrospective chart review identified patients who received gentamicin for open fracture antibiotic treatment from January 2008 to December 2012. Overall, 371 patients met the inclusion criteria and were categorized into 2 groups using risk, injury, failure, loss of kidney function, and end-stage kidney disease criteria: normal kidney function (74.9%) versus abnormal kidney function (25.1%).Use of gentamicin in open fracture antibiotic treatment.Kidney function; injury and treatment characteristics (eg, mechanism of injury; Gustilo-Anderson classification; number of surgical debridements, timing of definitive wound coverage, and type of wound coverage); and patient information (eg, age, height, weight, and body mass index, tobacco use, diabetes mellitus, human immunodeficiency virus, hepatitis, and current chemotherapy treatment).Those with abnormal kidney function had lower baseline creatinine (P0.001) and higher injury severity scores (16.5 vs. 11.8, P0.001) and were more likely to require intensive care unit admission (P0.001) than the normal group. Female sex (P = 0.015), and higher weight (P = 0.004), ICU admission (P0.001), and use of CT contrasted imaging (P0.001) were independently associated with abnormal kidney function. Abnormal kidney function incidence also sharply increased with age.Females and heavier individuals are at-risk of kidney injury while receiving gentamicin. ICU admission and concurent CT contrasted imaging are strongly associated with kidney injury in patients receiving gentamicin for open fracture treatment, and gentamicin should be avoided in those60 years of age.Therapeutic Level IV. Abstract: Accurate and rapid diagnosis is needed for timely intervention and clinical management of acute respiratory infections. This study evaluated performance characteristics of the Panther Fusion assay for the detection of influenza A virus (Flu A), influenza B virus (Flu B), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), parainfluenza viruses 1 to 3 (Para 1 to 3), human metapneumovirus (hMPV), rhinovirus (RV), and adenovirus (Adeno) targets in comparison to those of the eSensor and Lyra assays using 395 nasopharyngeal (NP) and 104 lower respiratory tract (LRT) specimens. Based on the consensus positive result established (positive result in 2 of the 3 assays), the NP specimens for the Fusion and eSensor assays had 100% positive percent agreement (PPA) for all the analytes and the Lyra assays had 100% PPA for Flu A and Adeno analytes. A 100% negative percent agreement (NPA) was observed for all the Lyra analytes, whereas those for the Fusion targets ranged from 98.4 to 100% and those for the eSensor ranged from 99.4 to 100% for all the analytes except RV. For the LRT specimens, Fusion had 100% PPA and 100% NPA for all the targets except hMPV. There was a 100% PPA for eSensor analytes; the NPA ranged from 98 to 100%, except for RV. For the Lyra assays, the PPA ranged between 50 and 100%, while the NPA was 100% for all the targets except Adeno. The Fusion assay performed similarly to the eSensor assay for majority of the targets tested and provides laboratories with a fully automated random-access system to test for a broad array of viral respiratory pathogens.

Abstract: International audience; The Simons Observatory (SO) will measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in both temperature and polarization over a wide range of angular scales and frequencies from 27-270 GHz with unprecedented sensitivity. One technology for coupling light onto the ~50 detector wafers that SO will field is spline-profiled feedhorns, which offer tunability between coupling efficiency and control of beam polarization leakage effects. We will present efforts to scale up feedhorn production for SO and their viability for future CMB experiments, including direct-machining metal feedhorn arrays and laser machining stacked Si arrays.

Abstract: International audience; POLARBEAR is a cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization experiment located in the Atacama desert in Chile. The science goals of the POLARBEAR project are to do a deep search for CMB B-mode polarization created by inflationary gravitational waves, as well as characterize the CMB B-mode signal from gravitational lensing. POLARBEAR-1 started observations in 2012, and the POLARBEAR team has published a series of results from its first two seasons of observations, including the first measurement of a non-zero B-mode polarization angular power spectrum, measured at sub-degree scales where the dominant signal is gravitational lensing of the CMB. The Simons Array expands POLARBEAR to include an additional two telescopes with next-generation POLARBEAR-2 multi-chroic receivers, observing at 95, 150, 220, and 270 GHz.The POLARBEAR-2A focal plane has 7,588 transition-edge sensor bolometers, read out with frequency-division multiplexing, with 40 frequency channels within the readout bandwidth of 1.5 to 4.5 MHz. The frequency channels are defined by a low-loss lithographed aluminum spiral inductor and interdigitated capacitor in series with each bolometer, creating a resonant frequency for each channel's unique voltage bias and current readout. Characterization of the readout includes measuring resonant peak locations and heights and fitting to a circuit model both above and below the bolometer superconducting transition temperature. This information is used determine the optimal detector bias frequencies and characterize stray impedances which may affect bolometer operation and stability. The detector electrical characterization includes measurements of the transition properties by sweeping in temperature and in voltage bias, measurements of the bolometer saturation power, as well as measuring and removing any biases introduced by the readout circuit. We present results from the characterization, tuning, and operation of the fully integrated focal plane and readout for the first POLARBEAR-2 receiver, POLARBEAR-2A, during its pre-deployment integration run.

Abstract: Substitutional donor atoms in silicon are promising qubits for quantum computation with extremely long relaxation and dephasing times demonstrated. One of the critical challenges of scaling these systems is determining inter-donor distances to achieve controllable wavefunction overlap while at the same time performing high fidelity spin readout on each qubit. Here we achieve such a device by means of scanning tunnelling microscopy lithography. We measure anti-correlated spin states between two donor-based spin qubits in silicon separated by 16${\pm}1$ nm. By utilizing an asymmetric system with two phosphorus donors at one qubit site and one on the other (2P-1P), we demonstrate that the exchange interaction can be turned on and off via electrical control of two in-plane phosphorus doped detuning gates. We determine the tunnel coupling between the 2P-1P system to be 200 MHz and provide a roadmap for the observation of two-electron coherent exchange oscillations., 19 pages, 10 figures - DEV053 - Team Viper

Abstract: We describe the design of a cryogenic rotation stage (CRS) for use with the cryogenic half-wave plate (CHWP) polarization modulator on the POLARBEAR-2b and POLARBEAR-2c (PB2b/c) cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiments, the second and third installments of the Simons Array. Rapid modulation of the CMB polarization signal using a CHWP suppresses 1/f contamination due to atmospheric turbulence and allows a single polarimeter to measure both polarization states, mitigating systematic effects that arise when differencing orthogonal detectors. To modulate the full detector array while avoiding excess photon loading due to thermal emission, the CHWP must have a clear-aperture diameter of > 450 mm and be cooled to < 100 K. We have designed a 454-mm-clear-aperture, < 65 K CRS using a superconducting magnetic bearing driven by a synchronous magnetic motor. We present the specifications for the CRS, its interfacing to the PB2b/c receiver cryostat, its performance in a stand-alone test, and plans for future work., PREPRINT VERSION. Abstract: LiteBIRD is a candidate for JAXA’s strategic large mission to observe the cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization over the full sky at large angular scales. It is planned to be launched in the 2020s with an H3 launch vehicle for three years of observations at a Sun-Earth Lagrangian point (L2). The concept design has been studied by researchers from Japan, U.S., Canada and Europe during the ISAS Phase-A1. Large scale measurements of the CMB B-mode polarization are known as the best probe to detect primordial gravitational waves. The goal of LiteBIRD is to measure the tensor-to-scalar ratio (r) with precision of δr < 0.001. A 3-year full sky survey will be carried out with a low frequency (34 - 161 GHz) telescope (LFT) and a high frequency (89 - 448 GHz) telescope (HFT), which achieve a sensitivity of 2.5 µK-arcmin with an angular resolution of ∼ 30 arcminutes around 100 GHz. Abstract: The Simons Observatory (SO) will observe the temperature and polarization anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) over a wide range of frequencies (27 to 270 GHz) and angular scales by using both small (∼0.5 m) and large (∼6 m) aperture telescopes. The SO small aperture telescopes will target degree angular scales where the primordial B-mode polarization signal is expected to peak. The incoming polarization signal of the small aperture telescopes will be modulated by a cryogenic, continuously-rotating half-wave plate (CRHWP) to mitigate systematic effects arising from slowly varying noise and detector pair-differencing. In this paper, we present an assessment of some systematic effects arising from using a CRHWP in the SO small aperture systems. We focus on systematic effects associated with structural properties of the HWP and effects arising when operating a HWP, including the amplitude of the HWP synchronous signal (HWPSS), and I → P (intensity to polarization) leakage that arises from detector non-linearity in the presence of a large HWPSS. We demonstrate our ability to simulate the impact of the aforementioned systematic effects in the time domain. This important step will inform mitigation strategies and design decisions to ensure that SO will meet its science goals.
