Ship navigation and operational activities at sea need meteorological and hydrographic information to enhance safety and efficiency. Besides observations collected from deployed data buoys, marine meteorological information services rely on weather observation reports from ships to increase the data density and thus service quality. Automatic Identification System (AIS), adopted internationally to facilitate ship-ship and ship-shore data exchange, has developed into communication links between ship/shore and buoys with many potential applications. This paper presents AIS applications designed and implemented for marine meteorological information services in a long-term project initiated by the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan. Achievements of this initiative include: versatile service delivery via shore-based AIS network to shipborne application platforms such as smart phones, remote controllable moving weather data collection, and assisted sharing of weather observation reports from ships. The magnetic properties and microstructures of rare earth lean and boron-rich [([Nd.sub.0.95][La.sub.0.05]).sub.11] [Fe.sub.76.5-x][Co.sub.x][Ti.sub.2][B.sub.10.5] (x = 0 - 15) melt-spun ribbons have been investigated. Two magnetic phases, namely [Alpha]-Fe and [R.sub.2][Fe.sub.14]B, were found, by thermal magnetic analysis (TMA), in all the ribbons studied. High intrinsic coercivity (iHc) and maximum energy product [(BH)max] values in the range of 14-18.7 kOe and 13.9-18.3 MGOe, respectively, have been achieved in these nanocomposites. Among compositions studied, the Co-substitutions, x [is less than or equal to] 10, were found to be effective in increasing the Br and (BH)max, while keeping a high value of iHc. It was evidenced from transmission electron microscopy that the homogeneity, fine grain size, and high volume fraction of the [R.sub.2][Fe.sub.14]B phase led to an increase in the iHc and maximum energy product of nanocomposites studied. The optimum magnetic properties of Br = 9.4 kG, iHc = 16.1 kOe and (BH)max = 18.3 MGOe have been obtained on [([Nd.sub.0.95][La.sub.0.05]).sub.11] [Fe.sub.bal.][Co.sub.10][Ti.sub.2][B.sub.10.5] ribbons after an optimum treatment. The phase transformations and magnetic properties of rare earth lean and boron rich [([Nd.sub.0.95][La.sub.0.05]).sub.x][Fe.sub.bal.][M.sub.2][B.sub.10.5], where x = 9.5 or 11 and M = Cr, Ti, Nb, V, Mo, Zr, Hf, Ta, Mn or W, melt spun ribbons have been investigated. Two magnetic phases, namely [Alpha]-Fe and [R.sub.2][Fe.sub.14]B, were found in ribbons studied. A third magnetic phase, the [R.sub.2][Fe.sub.23][B.sub.3], was also detected in [([Nd.sub.0.95][La.sub.0.05]).sub.9.5][Fe.sub.78][M.sub.2][B.sub.10.5] (M = Mo and Mn). Remanence ([B.sub.r]) and coercivity ([sub.i][H.sub.c]) values in the range of 8.0 to 9.1 kG and 9.5 to 18.9 kOe, respectively, have been achieved in nanocomposites with merely two magnetic phases. Among compositions studied, the Ti and W-substitutions were found to be most effective in increasing the [B.sub.r] and [sub.i][H.sub.c], respectively. For a fixed refractory metal substitution, namely, M = Cr, Ti or Nb, an increase in the total rare earth concentration resulted in nanocomposites of small grain sizes and a high volume fraction of the [R.sub.2][Fe.sub.14]B phase. The combination of fine grain size and high volume fraction of [R.sub.2][Fe.sub.14]B phase led to an increase in the and maximum energy product, [(BH).sub.max], of nanocomposites studied. A Br of 9.1 kG, [sub.i][H.sub.c], of 16.7 kOe and [(BH).sub.max] of 16.8 MGOe have been obtained on [([Nd.sub.0.95][La.sub.0.05]).sub.11][Fe.sub.76.5][Ti.sub.2][B.sub.10.5]. We measured Rayleigh wave group velocity dispersion curves from station pair cross correlations of continuous broadband data from 1,082 seismic stations in regional networks across China, Korea, and Japan. The dispersion curves are localized in the period range 6–40 s to produce group velocity maps, which we then combine with group velocity data in the period range 50–133 s from the global dispersion model of Ma et al. (2014, https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggu246). Cluster analysis performed on the local dispersion curves reveals distinct tectonic regions and provides a new way of estimating the number of regions needed to describe a surface wave dispersion data set. We inverted the centroid dispersion curves corresponding to each cluster for a new set of reference models. We used a combination of teleseismic receiver functions and Moho depths from the LITHO1.0 model to create a 3‐D Moho depth reference model and then constructed a 3‐D S velocity model by jointly inverting group velocities with localized phase velocities in the period range 28.57–200 s, also from Ma et al. (2014, https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggu246). The cluster analysis and comparisons with other regional models provide evidence for a broad region of deformed lithosphere in East Asia. We image high velocities in the Yangtze and Ordos cratons and low velocities underneath the East Sea (Sea of Japan), and we find that a low‐velocity zone in the midcrust is appropriate for Tibet. The model we present is intended as an alternative reference model that fits a broader range of periods to be used for further studies of regional geophysical phenomena.
