103. Tracking Urban Planetary Boundary Layer of Hong Kong by Aerosol Monitoring

Abstract

[ABSTRACT] Boundary layer has a diurnal variation of temperature near the ground with thickness variation ranging from hundreds of meters to a few kilometers. The dynamics of this layer can reveal the trapped pollutants related to atmosphere, climate, and human activities in urban areas of a city. In this paper, we present the first time a comprehensive result of tracking urban planetary boundary layer of Hong Kong (22.3N, 114.7E). The daily and seasonal variations of the mixing depth in the planetary layer over urban areas in Kowloon have been investigated using a ground-base Lidar station situated in the City University of Hong Kong to monitor relative aerosol concentration. The relationships between the aerosol profile, which is used to estimate the depth of the mixing layer, and the virtual potential temperature as well as relative humidity are examined. The Lidar observations and the radiosonde data obtained from the local meteorological station are in close agreement.

104. The role of supervisor support in predicting employee job satisfaction from their perception of the performance management system: A test of competing models in engineering environments

Abstract

Past studies of performance management systems (PMS) have focused more on designing the framework and less on the effect it has on employees. Moreover, employees in developing countries may not be knowledgeable or familiar with PMS. This paper proposes two competing statistical models to examine the roles that supervisor support (SS) has in engineering organisations. It was found that SS is a mediator, but not a moderator, in the relationship between PMS and employee job satisfaction. In other words, SS partially explains why employees have positive perceptions of their jobs based on their evaluation of the current PMS; SS thus enhances the PMS in engineering organisations. Vorige studies van prestasiebestuurstelsels het op die ontwerp van die raamwerk, eerder as die effek daarvan op werknemers, gefokus. Verder is werknemers in ontwikkelende lande dikwels nie ingelig en vertroud met prestasiebestuurstelsels nie. Twee meedingende statistiese modelle om die rol van toesighouerondersteuning te ondersoek word voorgestel. Daar is gevind dat toesighouerondersteuning in die verhouding tussen prestasiebestuurstelsels en werksbevrediging 'n bemiddelaar eerder as 'n moderator is. Toesighouerondersteuning verduidelik dus hoekom werknemers positiewe persepsies van hulle werksgeleenthede koester, gegrond op hul evaluering van die huidige prestasiebestuurstelsel. Toesighouerondersteuning bevorder dus die prestasiebestuurstelsel in ingenieursfirmas.

Abstract

Research in electronic controlled internal\ud combustion engines mainly focuses on improving performance\ud and lowering the emissions. Combustion performance depends\ud on the geometry of cylinders and on the design of all\ud mechanical parts, which are based on the laboratory\ud experimental research. Due to the limitations of the materials\ud used in the engine and the continuous high operating\ud temperature, engines function in either spark ignition or\ud charge ignition processes. Recent research on computer\ud controlled engines uses sensors and electronic actuators which\ud allows switching the engine operational mode between spark\ud ignition and charge ignition. Thus, this makes possible to mix\ud intake fuel compositions in order to give more choices to\ud consumers.\ud This study employs a neural network which is capable of\ud estimating fuel composition using the parameters of residual\ud gas. The simulation is based on a thermodynamic engine model\ud implemented in Matlab Simulink. The main advantages are the\ud capabilities of the model to 1) calculate the gas exchange as a\ud function of time in transient mode, and 2) to generate data for\ud the design control algorithms without the need of the engine\ud bed test environment to test various fuel compositions.

Abstract

Background: The global spread of the 2009 novel pandemic influenza A (H1N1) virus led to the accelerated production and distribution of monovalent 2009 Influenza A (H1N1) vaccines (pH1N1). This pandemic provided the opportunity to evaluate the risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), which has been an influenza vaccine safety concern since the swine flu pandemic of 1976, using a common protocol among high and middle-income countries. The primary objective of this project was to demonstrate the feasibility and utility of global collaboration in the assessment of vaccine safety, including countries both with and without an established infrastructure for vaccine active safety surveillance. A second objective, included a priori, was to assess the risk of GBS following pH1N1 vaccination. Methods: The primary analysis used the self-controlled case series (SCCS) design to estimate the relative incidence (RI) of GBS in the 42 days following vaccination with pH1N1 vaccine in a pooled analysis across databases and in analysis using a meta-analytic approach. Abstract

In this paper, a new approach to designing beamformers for voice control device is proposed. It is well-known that under a strong near-field noise with low signal-to-noise ratios (SNR), the performance of speech recognition is deteriorated significantly. However, designing the beamformer for enhancing speech recognition is a slow process and might not be adapted easily to the changing noise environment. In order to lower the complexity of the design, we intend to exploit the combination of existing optimal beamformer designs, which can be implemented in parallel. These include the least-squares technique and the signal-to-noise ratio maximization technique. We show here that for a given pre-trained speech recognizer and for a finite set of speech commands, neither method has a satisfactory performance in speech recognition accuracy under very low SNRs. However, since the two techniques have different characteristics in speech distortion and noise suppression, we show that it is possible to enhance the speech recognition accuracy by combining these two optimal designs.

121. Long-term effects of lime on earthworm abundance and biomass in an acidic soil on the south-western slopes of New South Wales, Australia

Abstract

Earthworm populations were monitored annually over 10 years in an acidic soil on the south-western slopes of New South Wales, Australia. The Typic Fragiochrept soil at the experimental site has a strong texture-contrast profile with a soil pH of 4.0–4.2 in 0.01 M CaCl2 in the 0–20 cm horizon. We found that the site was dominated by two native species, the megascolecids Spenceriella macleayi and Spenceriella montana, and accompanied by three exotic species, the lumbricid Aporrectodea trapezoides, and the acanthodrilids Microscolex dubius and Microscolex phosphoreus. Total earthworm abundance varied from 61 to 188 m−2. Lime, applied as a treatment, favoured all exotic earthworm species; their abundance was 3 times greater in limed soil than in unlimed soil. This strongly indicated that severe soil acidity was the most likely factor limiting, directly and indirectly, these species at this site. In contrast, the responses of the two native species to lime varied from negative (S. montana) to non-responsive (S. macleayi), suggesting that these native species are well adapted to acidic soil conditions, and perhaps to the dry seasonal conditions experienced during 5 of the 10 years the site was sampled.

Abstract

During the past three decades cities in the Asia-Pacific region have undergone massive transformations, characterised by rapid population growth and urbanisation. The rapid pace of globalisation and economic restructuring has resulted in these cities receiving the full impact of urbanisation pressures. In attempting to ease these pressures, major cities have advocated growth management approaches that give particular interest to sustainable urbanization and emphasise compact and optimum development of urban forms. This paper seeks to provide an insight into sustainable urbanisation practice, particularly on the promotion of compact urbanisation within Asia-Pacific’s fastest growing regions. The finding shows that within the context of resource constraints, sustainable urbanisation has been a key factor in the adoption of urban growth management initiatives promoting viable use of scarce resources for urban expansion.
