Abstract

This paper proposes operational matrix of rth integration of Chebyshev wavelets. A general procedure of this matrix is given. Operational matrix of rth integration is taken as rth power of operational matrix of first integration in literature. But, this study removes this disadvantage of Chebyshev wavelets method. Free vibration problems of non-uniform Euler-Bernoulli beam under various supporting conditions are investigated by using Chebyshev Wavelet Collocation Method. The proposed method is based on the approximation by the truncated Chebyshev wavelet series. A homogeneous system of linear algebraic equations has been obtained by using the Chebyshev collocation points. The determinant of coefficients matrix is equated to the zero for nontrivial solution of homogeneous system of linear algebraic equations. Hence, we can obtain ith natural frequencies of the beam and the coefficients of the approximate solution of Chebyshev wavelet series that satisfied differential equation and boundary conditions. Mode shapes functions corresponding to the natural frequencies can be obtained by normalizing of approximate solutions. The computed results well fit with the analytical and numerical results as in the literature. These calculations demonstrate that the accuracy of the Chebyshev wavelet collocation method is quite good even for small number of grid points. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract

Taylor and Francis Ltd, Aim: To determine the incidence and outcomes of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)-related acute lower respiratory tract infection (ALRI) including morbidity, nosocomial infection and mortality among newborn infants who were admitted to the neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).Methods: A multicenter, prospective study was conducted in newborns who were hospitalized with community acquired or nosocomial RSV infection in 44 NICUs throughout Turkey. Newborns with ALRI were screened for RSV infection by Respi-Strip®-test. Main outcome measures were the incidence of RSV-associated admissions in the NICUs and morbidity, mortality and epidemics results related to these admissions.Findings: The incidence of RSV infection was 1.24% (n: 250) and RSV infection constituted 19.6% of all ALRI hospitalizations, 226 newborns (90.4%) had community-acquired whereas 24 (9.6%) patients had nosocomial RSV infection in the NICUs. Of the 250 newborns, 171 (68.4%) were full-term infants, 183 (73.2%) had a BW >2500 g. RSV-related mortality rate was 1.2%. Abstract

Malignancies constitute a global health concern and chemotherapy remains the main mode of treatment. The present study was designed to evaluate the cytotoxicity of 8 compounds from Desbordesia glaucescens namely lanosta-7,24-dien-3-one (1), friedelanone (2), friedelanol (3), 3,3'-di-O-methylellagic acid (4), 3,3',4'-tri-0-methylellagic acid (5), ellagic acid (6), 3',4'-di-0-methylellagic acid 4-0-beta-o-glucopyranoside (7) and 3,3'-di-0-methylellagic acid 4'-0-beta-c-xylopyranoside (8) against 4 human carcinoma cell lines and normal CRL2120 fibroblasts. The neutral red uptake (NRU) assay was used for cytotoxicity testing. Caspase-Glo assay, cell cycle analysis, measurements of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were used to evaluate apoptosis induction. Compounds 4 and 6 as well as doxorubicin had IC50 values below 45 pM in the four tested cancer cell lines meanwhile other compounds displayed selective activity. The IC50 values ranged from 11.23 mu M (towards breast adenocarcinoma MCF-7 cells) to 44.65 mu M (colon carcinoma Caco-2 cells) for 4, from 14.07 mu M (towards MCF-7 cells) to 77.73 mu M (Caco-2 cells) for 6 and from 0.07 mu M (towards SPC212 cells) to 1.01 mu M (A549 cells) for doxorubicin. Compound 4 induced apoptosis in MCF-7 cells mediated by MMP loss. The constituents of Desbordesia glaucescens and especially ellagic acid (6) and its derivative 4 are potential cytotoxic compounds that deserve more investigations towards developing novel antiproliferative drugs against human carcinoma. Abstract

Human leukotriene A4 hydrolase enzyme (LTA4H) catalyses the biotransformation of the inactive precursor leukotriene A4 (LTA4) to the bioactive Leukotriene B4 (LTB4), which causes many inflammatory responses in the human body. Therefore, the selective inhibition of this enzyme becomes a useful strategy for the treatment of several illnesses such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. Herein we report a 3D-QSAR/ /CoMFA and CoMSIA study on a series of 47 benzimidazoles, benzoxazoles, benzothiazoles and thiazolopyridines reported as potent LTA4H inhibitors. Good statistical parameters were obtained for the best model (q2 = 0.568, r2 ncv = 0.891 and r2 test = 0.851). A new series of 10 compounds capable of inhibiting leukotriene A4 hydrolase with high potency was presented. All designed inhibitors showed low IC50 in nano- and sub-nanomolar ranges, when they were evaluated in 3D-QSAR models. Subsequently, the designed molecules, as well as the least and most active compounds were subjected to docking and molecular dynamics studies into LTA4H. In conclusion, we summarised a thorough structure–activity relationship (SAR) of LTA4H inhibitors of heterocyclic structure. These models can be used for the rational proposal of new inhibitors.

Abstract

Purpose: To develop a large Turkish National Melanoma registry in order to define demographic and clinicopathologic characteristics of patients with melanoma. Methods: The data was collected from 1635 patients with melanoma through a web-based registry system in 22 centers. Herein we present the results of 1157 patients with cutaneous melanoma. Results: The patient median age was 56.4 years and 646 (55.8%) were males. The commonest subtype was superficial spreading type (357, 30.9%). Abstract

The radioactive beam of 25Na at 5 MeV/u with an intensity up to 3 × 107 pps was employed to investigate γ-ray angular distributions in tandem with particle detection of interest in nuclear reaction of d (25Na, p γ). Inverse kinematics calculations were used to retrieve the excited state energies. Silicon Highly Segmented Array for Reactions and Coulex (SHARC) detector and TRIUMF ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape-Suppressed Spectrometer (TIGRESS) were used together to search for any correlation between scattered particles and gamma-rays. Nine specific transitions were investigated for their characteristic gamma-ray angular distributions in this distinctive study. Theoretical results of gamma-ray angular distributions (Wθp(θγ)) were compared with experimental data. This type of study was crucial for future experiments with a radioactive beam and low gamma-ray statistics to foresee the possible effects and results of particle-γ correlations. Abstract

The radioactive beam of 25Na at 5 MeV/u was employed to study the nuclear structure of 26Na excited states with an interest of its populated energies via transfer reaction. Inverse kinematics calculations were used to retrieve the excited state energies by reconstructing from the detected scattered proton energies in full angular coverage of Silicon Highly Segmented Array for Reactions and Coulex (SHARC) detector. Due to the limited resolution of the particle detector, TRIUMF ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape-Suppressed Spectrometer (TIGRESS) was also used in the detector set-up in the forward direction of 90 and 135 degree. This experimental set-up was the first experiment with a radioactive beam at TRIUMF facility in Canada. The nuclear reaction of d (25Na, p γ) was studied to extend the decay scheme through the gamma cascades rather than previously studied pure transitions to the ground state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Summary Background Patients with advanced gastric cancer have a poor prognosis and few efficacious treatment options. We aimed to assess the addition of cetuximab to capecitabine-cisplatin chemotherapy in patients with advanced gastric or gastro-oesophageal junction cancer. Methods In our open-label, randomised phase 3 trial (EXPAND), we enrolled adults aged 18 years or older with histologically confirmed locally advanced unresectable (M0) or metastatic (M1) adenocarcinoma of the stomach or gastro-oesophageal junction. We enrolled patients at 164 sites (teaching hospitals and clinics) in 25 countries, and randomly assigned eligible participants (1:1) to receive first-line chemotherapy with or without cetuximab. Randomisation was done with a permuted block randomisation procedure (variable block size), stratified by disease stage (M0 vs M1), previous oesophagectomy or gastrectomy (yes vs no), and previous (neo)adjuvant (radio)chemotherapy (yes vs no). Treatment consisted of 3-week cycles of twice-daily capecitabine 1000 mg/m 2 (on days 1–14) and intravenous cisplatin 80 mg/m 2 (on day 1), with or without weekly cetuximab (400 mg/m 2 initial infusion on day 1 followed by 250 mg/m 2 per week thereafter). The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS), assessed by a masked independent review committee in the intention-to-treat population. We assessed safety in all patients who received at least one dose of study drug. This study is registered at EudraCT, number 2007-004219-75. Findings Between June 30, 2008, and Dec 15, 2010, we enrolled 904 patients. Median PFS for 455 patients allocated capecitabine-cisplatin plus cetuximab was 4·4 months (95% CI 4·2–5·5) compared with 5·6 months (5·1–5·7) for 449 patients who were allocated to receive capecitabine-cisplatin alone (hazard ratio 1·09, 95% CI 0·92–1·29; p=0·32). 369 (83%) of 446 patients in the chemotherapy plus cetuximab group and 337 (77%) of 436 patients in the chemotherapy group had grade 3–4 adverse events, including grade 3–4 diarrhoea, hypokalaemia, hypomagnesaemia, rash, and hand-foot syndrome. Grade 3–4 neutropenia was more common in controls than in patients who received cetuximab. Incidence of grade 3–4 skin reactions and acne-like rash was substantially higher in the cetuximab-containing regimen than in the control regimen. 239 (54%) of 446 in the cetuximab group and 194 (44%) of 436 in the control group had any grade of serious adverse event. Interpretation Addition of cetuximab to capecitabine-cisplatin provided no additional benefit to chemotherapy alone in the first-line treatment of advanced gastric cancer in our trial.
