We analyze the CIII]-1908\AA emission properties in a sample of 3899 star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 23\AA, including 20% with 310\AA. To identify the galaxies responsible for the reionization of the Universe, we must rely on the investigation of the Lyman Continuum (LyC) properties of z<5 star-forming galaxies, where we can still directly observe their ionizing radiation. We selected a sample of 201 star-forming galaxies from the Vimos Ultra Deep Survey at 3.570{\AA}, Lya(ext)<5.7kpc, rUV<0.3kpc and |Dv Lya|<200km/s, stacked all the galaxies in each subsample and measured the flux density ratio fnu(895)/fnu(1470), that we consider to be a proxy for LyC emission. We compared these ratios to those obtained for the complementary samples. We find that the stacks of galaxies which are UV compact (rUV<0.3kpc) and have bright Lya emission (EWLya>70{\AA}), have much higher LyC fluxes compared to the rest of the galaxy population in agreement with theoretical studies and previous observational works. We also find that galaxies with low Lya(ext) have the highest LyC flux: this new correlation seems even stronger than the correlations with high EWLya and small rUV. These results assume that the stacks from all the subsamples present the same statistical contamination from lower redshift interlopers. If we subtract a statistical contamination from low redshift interlopers obtained with dedicated Monte Carlo simulations, from the flux density ratios (fnu(895)/fnu(1470)) of the significant subsamples we find that these samples contain real LyC leaking flux with a very high probability, but the true average escape fractions remain uncertain. Our work indicates that galaxies with very high EWLya, small Lya(ext) and small rUV are very likely the best candidates to show LyC radiation at z=4 and could therefore be the galaxies that contributed more to reionization., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We selected a sample of 76 Lya emitting galaxies from the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) at 2300km/sec. An ISM with this value of NHI would favour a large amount of scattering events, especially when the medium is static, so it can explain large values of Ext(Lya-C) and small EW(Lya). On the contrary, an ISM with a lower NHI, but large velocity outflows would lead to a Lya spatial profile peaked at the galaxy center (i.e. low values of Ext(Lya-C)) and to a large EW(Lya), as we see in our data. We present an extragalactic survey using observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to characterise galaxy populations up to $z=0.35$: the Valpara\'iso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES). We use ALMA Band-3 CO(1--0) observations to study the molecular gas content in a sample of 67 dusty normal star-forming galaxies selected from the $Herschel$ Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey ($H$-ATLAS). We have spectrally detected 49 galaxies at $>5\sigma$ significance and 12 others are seen at low significance in stacked spectra. CO luminosities are in the range of $(0.03-1.31)\times10^{10}$ K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$, equivalent to $\log({\rm M_{gas}/M_{\odot}}) =8.9-10.9$ assuming an $\alpha_{\rm CO}$=4.6(K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$)$^{-1}$, which perfectly complements the parameter space previously explored with local and high-z normal galaxies. We compute the optical to CO size ratio for 21 galaxies resolved by ALMA at $\sim 3$."$5$ resolution (6.5 kpc), finding that the molecular gas is on average $\sim$ 0.6 times more compact than the stellar component. We obtain a global Schmidt-Kennicutt relation, given by $\log [\Sigma_{\rm SFR}/({\rm M_{\odot} yr^{-1}kpc^{-2}})]=(1.26 \pm 0.02) \times \log [\Sigma_{\rm M_{H2}}/({\rm M_{\odot}\,pc^{-2}})]-(3.6 \pm 0.2)$. We find a significant fraction of galaxies lying at `intermediate efficiencies' between a long-standing mode of star-formation activity and a starburst, specially at $\rm L_{IR}=10^{11-12} L_{\odot}$. Combining our observations with data taken from the literature, we propose that star formation efficiencies can be parameterised by $\log [{\rm SFR/M_{H2}}]=0.19 \times {\rm (\log {L_{IR}}-11.45)}-8.26-0.41 \times \arctan[-4.84 (\log {\rm L_{IR}}-11.45) ]$. We present results on the dust attenuation of galaxies at redshift $\sim3-6$ by studying the relationship between the UV spectral slope ($\beta_{\rm UV}$) and the infrared excess (IRX; $L_{\rm IR}$/$L_{\rm UV}$) using ALMA far-infrared continuum observations. Our study is based on a sample of 67 massive, star-forming galaxies with a median mass of $M_{\ast}\sim 10^{10.7}\,M_{\rm \odot}$ spanning a redshift range $z=2.6-3.7$ (median $z=3.2$) that were observed with ALMA at $\lambda_{rest}=300\,{\rm \mu m}$. Both the individual ALMA detections (41 sources) and stacks including all galaxies show the IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ relationship at $z\sim3$ is mostly consistent with that of local starburst galaxies on average. However, we find evidence for a large dispersion around the mean relationship by up to $\pm0.5$ dex. Nevertheless, the locally calibrated dust correction factors based on the IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ relation are on average applicable to main-sequence $z\sim3$ galaxies. This does not appear to be the case at even higher redshifts, however. Using public ALMA observations of $z\sim4-6$ galaxies we find evidence for a significant evolution in the IRX-$\beta_{\rm UV}$ and the IRX-$M_{\ast}$ relations beyond $z\sim3$ toward lower IRX values. We discuss several caveats that could affect these results, including the assumed dust temperature. Using spectroscopic observations taken for the VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey (VUDS) we report here on the discovery of PCl J1001+0220, a massive proto-cluster located at $z_{spec}\sim4.57$ in the COSMOS field. The proto-cluster was initially detected as a $\sim12\sigma$ overdensity of typical star-forming galaxies in the blind spectroscopic survey of the early universe ($2

NIF experiments with Be capsules have followed a path of the highly successful "high-foot" CH capsules. Several keyhole and ConA targets preceeded a DT layered shot. In addition to backscatter subtraction, laser drive multipliers were needed to match observed X-ray drives. Those for the picket (0.95), trough (1.0) and second pulse (0.80) were determined by VISAR measurements. The time dependence of the Dante total x-ray flux and its fraction > 1.8 keV reflect the time dependence of the multipliers. A two step drive multiplier for the main pulse can match implosion times, but Dante measurements suggest the drive multiplier must increase late in time. With a single set of time dependent, multi-level multipliers the Dante data are well matched. These same third pulse drive multipliers also match the implosion times and Dante signals for two CH capsule DT. One discrepancy in the calculations is the X-ray flux in the picket. Calculations over-estimate the flux > 1.8 keV by a factor of ~100, while getting the total flux correctly. These harder X-rays cause an expansion of the Be/fuel interface of 2-3 km/s before the arrival of the first shock. VISAR measurements show only 0.2 to 0.3 km/s. The X-ray drive on the DT Be capsule was further degraded by a random decrease of 9% in the total picket flux. This small change caused the capsule fuel to change from an adiabat of 1.8 to 2.3 by mistiming of the first and second shocks. With this shock tuning and adjustments to the calculation, the first NIF Be capsule implosion achieved 29% of calculated yield, comparable to the CH DT capsules of 68% and 21%. Inclusion of a large M1 asymmetry in the DT ice layer and mixing from instability growth may help explain this final degradation. In summary when driven similarly the Be capsules performed like CH capsules. Performance degradation for both seems to be dominated by drive and capsule asymmetries.

Deep observations are revealing a growing number of young galaxies in the first billion year of cosmic time. Compared to typical galaxies at later times, they show more extreme emission-line properties, higher star formation rates, lower masses, and smaller sizes. However, their faintness precludes studies of their chemical abundances and ionization conditions, strongly limiting our understanding of the physics driving early galaxy build-up and metal enrichment. Here we study a rare population of UV-selected, sub$-L^{*}$(z=3) galaxies at redshift 2.4$

Determining the average fraction of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons escaping high redshift galaxies is essential for understanding how reionization proceeded in the z>6 Universe. We want to measure the LyC signal from a sample of sources in the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) and COSMOS fields for which ultra-deep VIMOS spectroscopy as well as multi-wavelength Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging are available. We select a sample of 46 galaxies at $z\sim 4$ from the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) database, such that the VUDS spectra contain the LyC part of the spectra, that is, the rest-frame range $880-910\AA$. Taking advantage of the HST imaging, we apply a careful cleaning procedure and reject all the sources showing nearby clumps with different colours, that could potentially be lower-redshift interlopers. After this procedure, the sample is reduced to 33 galaxies. We measure the ratio between ionizing flux (LyC at $895\AA$) and non-ionizing emission (at $\sim 1500 \AA$) for all individual sources. We also produce a normalized stacked spectrum of all sources. Assuming an intrinsic average $L_{\nu}(1470)/L_{\nu}(895)$ of 3, we estimate the individual and average relative escape fraction. We do not detect ionizing radiation from any individual source, although we identify a possible LyC emitter with very high Ly$\alpha$ equivalent width (EW). From the stacked spectrum and assuming a mean transmissivity for the sample, we measure a relative escape fraction $f_{esc}^{rel}=0.09\pm0.04$. We also look for correlations between the limits in the LyC flux and source properties and find a tentative correlation between LyC flux and the EW of the Ly$\alpha$ emission line. Our results imply that the LyC flux emitted by $V=25-26$ star-forming galaxies at z$\sim$4 is at most very modest, in agreement with previous upper limits from studies based on broad and narrow band imaging., Comment: accepted by A&A updated fesc,rel value

(Abridged) The properties of stellar clumps in star forming galaxies and their evolution over the redshift range $2\lesssim z \lesssim 6$ are presented and discussed in the context of the build-up of massive galaxies at early cosmic times. We use HST/ACS images of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts from the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) to identify clumps within a 20 kpc radius. We find that the population of galaxies with more than one clump is dominated by galaxies with two clumps, representing $\sim21-25$\% of the population, while the fraction of galaxies with 3, or 4 and more, clumps is 8-11 and 7-9\%, respectively. The observed evolution of the gas fraction and its associated depletion time in main sequence (MS) galaxies provides insights on how star formation proceeds over cosmic time. We report ALMA detections of the rest-frame $\sim$300$\mu$m continuum observed at 240 GHz for 45 massive ($\rm \langle log(M_{\star}(M_{\odot}))\rangle=10.7$), normal star forming ($\rm \langle log(sSFR(yr^{-1}))\rangle=-8.6$), i.e. MS, galaxies at $\rm z\approx3.2$ in the COSMOS field. From an empirical calibration between cold neutral, i.e. molecular and atomic, gas mass $\rm M_{gas}$ and monochromatic (rest-frame) infrared luminosity, the gas mass for this sample is derived. Combined with stellar mass $\rm M_{\star}$ and star formation rate (SFR) estimates (from {\sc MagPhys} fits) we obtain a median gas fraction of $\rm \mu_{gas}=M_{gas}/M_{\star}=1.65_{-0.19}^{+0.18}$ and a median gas depletion time $\rm t_{depl.}(Gyr)=M_{gas}/SFR=0.68_{-0.08}^{+0.07}$; correction for the location on the MS will only slightly change the values. The reported uncertainties are the $\rm 1\sigma$ error on the median. Our results are fully consistent with the expected flattening of the redshift evolution from the 2-SFM (2 star formation mode) framework that empirically prescribes the evolution assuming a universal, log-linear relation between SFR and gas mass coupled to the redshift evolution of the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of main sequence galaxies. While $\rm t_{dep.}$ shows only a mild dependence on location within the MS, a clear trend of increasing $\rm \mu_{gas}$ across the MS is observed (as known from previous studies). We report the detection of morphology dependent stellar age in massive quenched galaxies (QGs) at z~1.2. The sense of the dependence is that compact QGs are 0.5-2 Gyr older than normal-sized ones. The evidence comes from three different age indicators, Dn4000, Hdelta and fits to spectral synthesis models, applied to their stacked optical spectra. All age indicators consistently show that the stellar populations of compact QGs are older than their normally-sized counterparts. We detect weak [OII] emission in a fraction of QGs, and the strength of the line, when present, is similar between the two samples; however, compact galaxies exhibit significantly lower frequency of [OII] emission than normal ones. A fraction of both samples are individually detected in 7 Ms Chandra X-ray images (luminosities$\sim10^{40}$-$10^{41}$ erg/sec). 7 Ms stacks of non-detected galaxies show similarly low luminosities in the soft band only, consistent with a hot gas origin for the X-ray emission. While both [OII] emitters and non-emitters are also X-ray sources among normal galaxies, no compact galaxy with [OII] emission is an X-ray source, arguing against an AGN powering the line in compact galaxies. We interpret the [OII] properties as further evidence that compact galaxies are older and further along into the process of quenching star-formation and suppressing gas accretion. Finally, we argue that the older age of compact QGs is evidence of progenitor bias: compact QGs simply reflect the smaller sizes of galaxies at their earlier quenching epoch, with stellar density most likely having nothing directly to do with cessation of star-formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a study of a large filamentary structure at z~0.73 in the field of the COSMOS survey, the so-called COSMOS Wall. This structure encompasses a comprehensive range of environments from a dense cluster and a number of galaxy groups to filaments, less dense regions, and adjacent voids. It thus provides a valuable laboratory for the accurate mapping of environmental effects on galaxy evolution at a look-back time of ~6.5 Gyr, when the Universe was roughly half its present age. We performed deep spectroscopic observations with VIMOS at VLT of a K-band selected sample of galaxies in this complex structure, building a sample of galaxies complete in galaxy stellar mass down to a lower limit of log(M/M_sun)~ 9.8, which is significantly deeper than previously available data. Thanks to its location within the COSMOS survey, each galaxy benefits from a wealth of ancillary information. In this paper we detail the survey strategy and weighting scheme adopted to account for the biases introduced by the photometric pre-selection of our targets. We present our galaxy stellar mass and rest-frame magnitudes estimates together with a group catalog obtained with our new data and their member galaxies color/mass distribution. Owing to to our new sample we can perform a detailed, high definition mapping of the complex COSMOS Wall structure. The sharp environmental information, coupled with high quality spectroscopic information and rich ancillary data available in the COSMOS field, enables a detailed study of galaxy properties as a function of local environment in a redshift slice where environmental effects are important, and in a stellar mass range where mass and environment driven effects are both at work., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, A&A accepted

In this paper we investigate the impact of different star formation histories (SFHs) on the relation between stellar mass M$_{*}$ and star formation rate (SFR) using a sample of galaxies with reliable spectroscopic redshift zspec>2 drawn from the VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey (VUDS). We produce an extensive database of dusty model galaxies, calculated starting from the new library of single stellar population (SSPs) models presented in Cassara' et al. 2013 and weighted by a set of 28 different SFHs based on the Schmidt function, and characterized by different ratios of the gas infall time scale $\tau_{infall}$ to the star formation efficiency $\nu$. The treatment of dust extinction and re-emission has been carried out by means of the radiative transfer calculation. The spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting technique is performed by using GOSSIP+, a tool able to combine both photometric and spectroscopic information to extract the best value of the physical quantities of interest, and to consider the Intergalactic Medium (IGM) attenuation as a free parameter. We find that the main contribution to the scatter observed in the $SFR-M_{*}$ plane is the possibility of choosing between different families of SFHs in the SED fitting procedure, while the redshift range plays a minor role. The majority of the galaxies, at all cosmic times, are best-fit by models with SFHs characterized by a high $\tau_{\rm infall}/\nu$ ratio. We present the COSMOS2015 catalog which contains precise photometric redshifts and stellar masses for more than half a million objects over the 2deg$^{2}$ COSMOS field. Including new $YJHK_{\rm s}$ images from the UltraVISTA-DR2 survey, $Y$-band from Subaru/Hyper-Suprime-Cam and infrared data from the Spitzer Large Area Survey with the Hyper-Suprime-Cam Spitzer legacy program, this near-infrared-selected catalog is highly optimized for the study of galaxy evolution and environments in the early Universe. To maximise catalog completeness for bluer objects and at higher redshifts, objects have been detected on a $\chi^{2}$ sum of the $YJHK_{\rm s}$ and $z^{++}$ images. The catalog contains $\sim 6\times 10^5$ objects in the 1.5 deg$^{2}$ UltraVISTA-DR2 region, and $\sim 1.5\times 10^5$ objects are detected in the "ultra-deep stripes" (0.62 deg$^{2}$) at $K_{\rm s}\leq 24.7$ (3$\sigma$, 3", AB magnitude). Through a comparison with the zCOSMOS-bright spectroscopic redshifts, we measure a photometric redshift precision of $\sigma_{\Delta z/(1+z_s)}$ = 0.007 and a catastrophic failure fraction of $\eta=0.5$%. This paper describes the first data release (DR1) of the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS). The DR1 includes all low-resolution spectroscopic data obtained in 276.9 arcmin2 of the CANDELS-COSMOS and CANDELS-ECFDS survey areas, including accurate spectroscopic redshifts z_spec and individual spectra obtained with VIMOS on the ESO-VLT. A total of 698 objects have a measured redshift, with 677 galaxies, two type-I AGN and a small number of 19 contaminating stars. The targets of the spectroscopic survey are selected primarily on the basis of their photometric redshifts to ensure a broad population coverage. About 500 galaxies have z_spec>2, 48 with z_spec>4, and the highest reliable redshifts reach beyond z_spec=6. This dataset approximately doubles the number of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts at z>3 in these fields. We discuss the general properties of the sample in terms of the spectroscopic redshift distribution, the distribution of Lyman-alpha equivalent widths, and physical properties including stellar masses M_star and star formation rates (SFR) derived from spectral energy distribution fitting with the knowledge of z_spec. We highlight the properties of the most massive star-forming galaxies, noting the large range in spectral properties, with Lyman-alpha in emission or in absorption, and in imaging properties with compact, multi-component or pair morphologies. We aim at improving constraints on the epoch of galaxy formation by measuring the ages of 3597 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts 22 the joint analysis of spectroscopy and photometry combined with restricted age possibilities when taking into account the age of the Universe substantially reduces systematic uncertainties and degeneracies in the age derivation. We find galaxy ages ranging from very young with a few tens of million years to substantially evolved with ages up to ~1.5-2 Gyr. The formation redshifts z_f derived from the measured ages indicate that galaxies may have started forming stars as early as z_f~15. We produce the formation redshift function (FzF), the number of galaxies per unit volume formed at a redshift z_f, and compare the FzF in increasing redshift bins finding a remarkably constant 'universal' FzF. The FzF is parametrized with (1+z)^\zeta, with \zeta~0.58+/-0.06, indicating a smooth 2 dex increase from z~15 to z~2. Remarkably this observed increase is of the same order as the observed rise in the star formation rate density (SFRD). The ratio of the SFRD with the FzF gives an average SFR per galaxy of ~7-17Msun/yr at z~4-6, in agreement with the measured SFR for galaxies at these redshifts. From the smooth rise in the FzF we infer that the period of galaxy formation extends from the highest possible redshifts that we can probe at z~15 down to redshifts z~2. This indicates that galaxy formation is a continuous process over cosmic time, with a higher number of galaxies forming at the peak in SFRD at z~2 than at earlier epochs. We measure galaxy sizes on a sample of $\sim1200$ galaxies with confirmed spectroscopic redshifts $2 \leq z_{spec} \leq 4.5$ in the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS), representative of star-forming galaxies with $i_\mathrm{AB} \leq 25$. We first derive galaxy sizes applying a classical parametric profile fitting method using GALFIT. We then measure the total pixel area covered by a galaxy above a given surface brightness threshold, which overcomes the difficulty of measuring sizes of galaxies with irregular shapes. We then compare the results obtained for the equivalent circularized radius enclosing 100\% of the measured galaxy light $r_T^{100}$ to those obtained with the effective radius $r_{e,\mathrm{circ}}$ measured with GALFIT. We find that the sizes of galaxies computed with our non-parametric approach span a large range but remain roughly constant on average with a median value $r_T^{100}\sim2.2$ kpc for galaxies with $2

We measure the H{\alpha} and [OIII] emission line properties as well as specific star-formation rates (sSFR) of spectroscopically confirmed 33 cannot be fully explained in a picture of cold accretion driven growth. We find a progressively increasing [OIII]{\lambda}5007/H{\beta} ratio out to z~6, consistent with the ratios in local galaxies selected by increasing H{\alpha} EW (i.e., sSFR). Aim: We aim to measure the LyC signal from a sample of sources in the Chandra deep field south. We collect star-forming galaxies (SFGs) and active galactic nuclei (AGN) with accurate spectroscopic redshifts, for which Hubble Space Telescope (HST) coverage and multi-wavelength photometry are available. Method: We selected a sample of about 200 sources at z~3. Taking advantage of HST resolution, we applied a careful cleaning procedure and rejected sources showing nearby clumps with different colours, which could be lower-z interlopers. Our clean sample consisted of 86 SFGs (including 19 narrow-band selected Lya emitters) and 8 AGN (including 6 detected in X-rays). We measured the LyC flux from aperture photometry in four narrow-band filters covering wavelengths below a 912 A rest frame (3.11

The Lyman continuum (LyC) flux escaping from high-z galaxies into the IGM is a fundamental quantity to understand the physical processes involved in the reionization epoch. We have investigated a sample of star-forming galaxies at z~3.3 in order to search for possible detections of LyC photons escaping from galaxy halos. UV deep imaging in the COSMOS field obtained with the prime focus camera LBC at the LBT telescope was used together with a catalog of spectroscopic redshifts obtained by the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS) to build a sample of 45 galaxies at z~3.3 with L>0.5L*. We obtained deep LBC images of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the interval 3.2728% but a detailed analysis of their properties reveals that, with the exception of two marginal detections (S/N~2) in the U band, all the other 8 galaxies are most likely contaminated by the UV flux of low-z interlopers located close to the high-z targets. The average escape fraction derived from the stacking of the cleaned sample was constrained to fesc_rel<2%. The implied HI photo-ionization rate is a factor two lower than that needed to keep the IGM ionized at z~3, as observed in the Lyman forest of high-z QSO spectra or by the proximity effect. These results support a scenario where high redshift, relatively bright (L>0.5L*) star-forming galaxies alone are unable to sustain the level of ionization observed in the cosmic IGM at z~3. The fraction of LAEs at these redshifts is $\sim$10%, which is consistent with previous observations. We compared best-fit SED-estimated stellar parameters of the SFG$_{\rm N}$, SFG$_{\rm L}$ and LAE samples. For the luminosities probed here ($\sim$L$^*$), we find that galaxies with and without Ly$\alpha$ in emission have small but significant differences in their SED-based properties. We find that LAEs have less dust, and lower star-formation rates (SFR) compared to non-LAEs. We also find that LAEs are less massive compared to non-LAEs, though the difference is smaller and less significant compared to the SFR and E$_{\rm s}$(B-V). (arXiv abridged abstract) The observed UV rest-frame spectra of distant galaxies are the result of their intrinsic emission combined with absorption along the line of sight produced by the inter-galactic medium (IGM). Here we analyse the evolution of the mean IGM transmission Tr(Ly_alpha) and its dispersion along the line of sight for 2127 galaxies with 2.5= 4 compared to results from QSOs, but a degeneracy between dust extinction and IGM prevents to draw firm conclusions if the internal dust extinction for star-forming galaxies at z>4 takes a mean value significantly in excess of E(B-V)>0.15. Most importantly, we find a large dispersion of IGM transmission along the lines of sight towards distant galaxies with 68% of the distribution within 10 to 17% of the median value in delta z=0.5 bins, similar to what is found on the LOS towards QSOs. We demonstrate the importance of taking into account this large range of IGM transmission when selecting high redshift galaxies based on their colour properties (e.g. LBG or photometric redshift selection) or otherwise face a significant incompleteness in selecting high redshift galaxy populations., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, submitted to A&A

We study the evolution of the star formation rate (SFR) - stellar mass (M_star) relation and specific star formation rate (sSFR) of star forming galaxies (SFGs) since a redshift z~5.5 using 2435 (4531) galaxies with highly reliable (reliable) spectroscopic redshifts in the VIMOS Ultra-Deep Survey (VUDS). It is the first time that these relations can be followed over such a large redshift range from a single homogeneously selected sample of galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts. The log(SFR) - log(M_star) relation for SFGs remains roughly linear all the way up to z=5 but the SFR steadily increases at fixed mass with increasing redshift. We find that for stellar masses M_star>3.2 x 10^9 M_sun the SFR increases by a factor ~13 between z=0.4 and z=2.3. We extend this relation up to z=5, finding an additional increase in SFR by a factor 1.7 from z=2.3 to z=4.8 for masses M_star > 10^10 M_sun. We observe a turn-off in the SFR-M_star relation at the highest mass end up to a redshift z~3.5. We interpret this turn-off as the signature of a strong on-going quenching mechanism and rapid mass growth. The sSFR increases strongly up to z~2 but it grows much less rapidly in 2

We investigate the evolution of galaxy clustering for galaxies in the redshift range 2.0<$z$<5.0 using the VIMOS Ultra Deep Survey (VUDS). We present the projected (real-space) two-point correlation function $w_p(r_p)$ measured by using 3022 galaxies with robust spectroscopic redshifts in two independent fields (COSMOS and VVDS-02h) covering in total 0.8 deg$^2$. We quantify how the scale dependent clustering amplitude $r_0$ changes with redshift making use of mock samples to evaluate and correct the survey selection function. Using a power-law model $\xi(r) = (r/r_0)^{-\gamma}$ we find that the correlation function for the general population is best fit by a model with a clustering length $r_0$=3.95$^{+0.48}_{-0.54}$ h$^{-1}$Mpc and slope $\gamma$=1.8$^{+0.02}_{-0.06}$ at $z$~2.5, $r_0$=4.35$\pm$0.60 h$^{-1}$Mpc and $\gamma$=1.6$^{+0.12}_{-0.13}$ at $z$~3.5. We use these clustering parameters to derive the large-scale linear galaxy bias $b_L^{PL}$, between galaxies and dark matter. We find $b_L^{PL}$ = 2.68$\pm$0.22 at redshift $z$~3 (assuming $\sigma_8$ = 0.8), significantly higher than found at intermediate and low redshifts. We fit an HOD model to the data and we obtain that the average halo mass at redshift $z$~3 is $M_h$=10$^{11.75\pm0.23}$ h$^{-1}$M$_{\odot}$. From this fit we confirm that the large-scale linear galaxy bias is relatively high at $b_L^{HOD}$ = 2.82$\pm$0.27. Comparing these measurements with similar measurements at lower redshifts we infer that the star-forming population of galaxies at $z$~3 should evolve into the massive and bright ($M_r$<-21.5) galaxy population which typically occupy haloes of mass $\langle M_h\rangle$ = 10$^{13.9}$ h$^{-1}$ $M_{\odot}$ at redshift $z$=0., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures, submitted to A&A

Context. Lyman Break Galaxies (LBG) and Narrow Band (NB) surveys have been successful at detecting large samples of high-redshift galaxies. Both methods are subject to contamination from low-redshift interlopers. Aims. In this paper, our aim is to investigate the nature of low-redshift interlopers in NB Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters (LAE) searches. Methods. From previous HAWK-I NB imaging at z $\sim$7.7 we identify three objects that would have been selected as high-redshift LAEs had our optical data been one magnitude shallower (but still one to two magnitudes fainter than the near infrared data). We follow-up these objects in spectroscopy with XSHOOTER at the VLT. Results. Despite low quality data due to bad weather conditions, for each of the three objects we identify one, and only one emission line, in the spectra of the objects, that we identify as the O[III]5007A line. This result combined to spectral energy density fitting and tests based on line ratios of several populations of galaxies we infer that the 3 objects are ultrastrong line emitters at redshifts $\sim$1.1. Conclusions. From this work and the literature we remark that the O[III] line appears to be a common source of contamination in high-redshift LBG and LAE samples and we suggest that efforts be put to characterize with high accuracy the O[III] luminosity function out to redshift $\sim$3 or higher., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted by A&A
