Abstract

Closed-cell aluminium foams are a relatively new class of structural and functional materials that have attracted increasing attention, for which they are candidate materials in many applications of several industrial fields. One of the aims of the research can be the improvement of the mechanical behaviour of foam-based structures by means of reinforcements that preserve their peculiar property of lightness. In view of this challenge, the present paper describes the production, the mechanical characterization and the numerical modelling of enhanced aluminium foam samples. More specifically, cylindrical sandwiches, characterized by a closed-cell aluminium foam core reinforced with a skin of lightweight aluminium alloy wire mesh embedded into a matrix of low porosity foam, were produced in a one step process; therefore, mechanical three point bending tests were carried out, in order to compare the properties of these innovative sandwiches with plain foam cylinders. The results of the experimental campaign highlight a significant improvement of the mechanical properties of the samples, when so reinforced. Moreover, a FEM numerical model of the cylindrical sandwiches was developed and validated, by comparing the simulations with the results of the experimental tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A series of experiments regarding the deposition of Ti powders on an aluminum substrate with different inlet temperatures, stand-off distance, and gun speed allowed to study the relation between these factors and the morphology of the coating. A suitable geometrical approximation of the coating profile was then found and used, together with the mass balance of the deposition process, to write a relationship between the coating cross section and the process parameters. The proposed equations are expected to be useful in a manufacturing environment for predicting the coating parameters from the process conditions and ultimately to optimize the deposition. Abstract

The model presented in the first part of this work is used here to estimate the diameter error in the most common turning operations. In fact, the diameter error is considered as a variable depending on the deflections of the tool, workpiece holder and workpiece, which are considered the main factors responsible for the machining accuracy. The proposed model has been applied to the three most common turning schemes related to workpiece fixturing, where the workpiece is clamped in a chuck, or supported between two centers, or clamped in a chuck at the spindle and supported on a center at the tailstock. Some numerical examples have been computed using the proposed model to predict the diameter error along the workpiece and the cutting force along the workpiece axis, as well as the influence of the cutting force components on the error prediction. The results provide additional insight into error formation in the turning process. Finally, some experimental tests have been carried out in order to validate the developed model. Good agreement has been obtained between numerical and experimental results. The proposed model represents a first step towards accuracy control in machining operations and, thus, towards optimization of the manufacturing process.

Abstract

This paper deals with the study of the influence of the thermal oxidation (TO) treatment on the tribological properties of Ti-6Al-4V tribopairs. A detailed experimental campaign, including tribological tests, microgeometrical measurements, microhardness tests and phase composition analyses, was carried out on both treated and untreated components. The tribological behavior was studied through the pin-on-disk tests in four different contact conditions: treated disk coupled with untreated pin, untreated disk coupled with treated pin, both treated and both untreated. The effectiveness of the treatment in enhancing the tribological properties of the Ti-6Al-4V alloy sheets was found. In particular, the thermal oxidation treatment, promoting hardness enhancement and the formation of a superficial rutile layer, changed the wear mechanism of the titanium alloy, passing from adhesive wear type, for the untreated case, to abrasive wear, in the treated one.
