Objective: To describe the Cleft Recurrence Risk (Cleft RR) App, designed to be used on genetic counseling for cleft lip and/ or palate. Design: A validation study, single cohort. Setting: Tertiary care children's Hospital. Patients, Participants: The manual obtained the results of 100 cases undergoing genetic counseling at the cleft lip and palate treatment center. Interventions: The application for genetic counseling for cleft lip and/ or palate is designed to calculate quickly the recurrence risk considering the ancestry, cleft type, sex, and family history and thus encourage the implementation of genetic counseling in cleft lip and palate centers around the world. Main Outcome Measure(s): The data were submitted to the Bland-Altman statistics. Results: After defining parameters the application development follows the steps: development, prototyping, and documentation. The validation of the calculated data was performed by comparing the results of 100 cases undergoing genetic counseling at the cleft lip and palate treatment center obtained by the manual method with the results obtained by the mobile app method; the data were submitted to the Bland-Altman statistics and a high concordance was found. Conclusions: The mobile app for use by healthcare professionals proved to be simple to use, easy to apply, and provided accurate results. Cleft Recurrence Risk is an application for smartphones developed for genetic counseling in cleft lip and palate, supplementary use by health professionals, and should not replace professional performance. This study investigates the fibers of tucum (Bactris setosa Mart.), a palm species native to the Atlantic Forest. The fibers manually extracted from tucum leaves were characterized to determine important properties that help with the recognition of the material. The fibers were also subjected to pre-bleaching to evaluate their dyeing potential. The extraction and characterization of these fibers revealed excellent properties, making this material suitable not only for manufacturing high-quality textile products but also for various technical and engineering applications. The characterization techniques included SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis), and tensile strength tests. These analyses showed that tucum fibers possess desirable properties, such as high tensile strength, with values comparable to linen but with a much finer diameter. The fibers also demonstrated good affinity for dyes, comparable to cotton fibers. An SEM analysis revealed a rough surface, with superficial phytoliths contributing to their excellent mechanical strength. FTIR presented a spectrum compatible with cellulose, confirming its main composition and highly hydrophilic nature. The dyeing tests indicated that tucum fibers can be successfully dyed with industrial direct dyes, showing good color yield and uniformity. This study highlights the potential of tucum fibers as a renewable, biodegradable, and sustainable alternative for the transformation industry, promoting waste valorization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carioca and black bean groups play a significant role in Latin American common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) consumption, serving as excellent sources of nutrients. One of the most significant threats for common bean production is common bacterial blight (CBB), a disease caused by the gram‐negative bacteria Xanthomonas phaseoli pv. phaseoli (Xpp) and Xanthomonas citri pv. fuscans (Xcf). An effective method for managing this disease is the use of plant genetic resistance. However, it is not known whether the same or overlapping sets of genes are associated with resistance to both pathogens. This study aimed to identify a repertoire of genes potentially associated with resistance to Xpp and compare it with that previously reported for Xcf. Eighty carioca and black common bean cultivars that had previously been challenged with Xcf were inoculated with a strain of Xpp, and a genome‐wide association study (GWAS) using single‐nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and disease severity data was conducted. Three carioca and three black bean cultivars exhibited high levels of resistance to Xpp. Five SNPs with the highest −log10(p) values unveiled genes coding for diverse putative biochemical functions, including a light‐regulated Lir1 protein, a proton‐dependent oligopeptide transporter family protein, a metallo‐dependent phosphatase‐like protein, a WPP domain‐interacting tail‐anchored protein 2 and a pectin lyase‐like superfamily protein. No overlap between this repertoire of genes with that reported for Xcf was found. These findings provide important insights into genes potentially involved in the P. vulgaris resistance to Xpp and the complexity of the resistance response to CBB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
