Pulmonary congenital abnormalities are rare disorders including congenital pulmonary airway malformations (CPAM) and pulmonary sequestration (PS). CPAM is a lesion characterized by the presence of anomalous bronchiolar or acinar structures, variable in size, either cystic or not cystic. PS is generally defined as nonfunctioning lung tissue that is not in normal continuity with the tracheobronchial tree and that derives its blood supply from systemic vessels. We describe a case of a baby girl with a very rare association between CPAM type 2 and intralobar pulmonary sequestration (IPS) focusing on the cystic lesions typical of CPAM and on the lymphatic and blood vessels. The cells lining the cysts often were positive for D2-40 (oncofetal protein M2A). Lymphatic endothelial cells, positive for D2-40, were widely present in the lung parenchyma and dilated lymphatic vessels were present also in the inter-alveolar septa. Moreover, we discuss the pathogenesis of CPAM and its classification criteria.

New bearing materials for total joint replacement have been explored as the need to improve longevity and enhance performance is driven by the changing demands of the patient demographic. Carbon-reinforced PEEK has demonstrated good wear characteristics in experimental wear simulation in both simple geometry pin-on-plate studies and in total hip joint replacement. Carbon reinforced PEEK CFR-PEEK has the potential to reduce tibial insert thickness and preserve bone in the knee. This study investigated the wear performance of PEEK and CFR-PEEK in a low conformity total knee replacement configuration. Custom-made flat inserts were tested against cobalt-chromium femoral bearings in a knee wear simulation for a period of three million cycles. Wear was assessed gravimetrically at intervals throughout the study. The wear rates of both PEEK and CFR-PEEK were very high and almost two orders of magnitude higher than the wear rate of UHMWPE under comparable conditions. Evidence of mechanical failure of the materials, including surface cracking and delamination was observed in both materials. This study highlights that these materials may not be suitable alternatives for UHMWPE in low-conformity designs.

We present long-term (5-year) measurements of particulate matter with an upper diameter limit of ∼ 10 µm (PM10), elemental carbon (EC), organic carbon (OC), and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in aerosol filter samples collected at the Zotino Tall Tower Observatory in the middle-taiga subzone (Siberia). The data are complemented with carbon monoxide (CO) measurements. Air mass back trajectory analysis and satellite image analysis were used to characterise potential source regions and the transport pathway of haze plumes. Polluted and background periods were selected using a non-parametric statistical approach and analysed separately. In addition, near-pristine air masses were selected based on their EC concentrations being below the detection limit of our thermal–optical instrument. Over the entire sampling campaign, 75 and 48 % of air masses in winter and in summer, respectively, and 42 % in spring and fall are classified as polluted. The observed background concentrations of CO and EC showed a sine-like behaviour with a period of 365 ± 4 days, mostly due to different degrees of dilution and the removal of polluted air masses arriving at the Zotino Tall Tower Observatory (ZOTTO) from remote sources. Our analysis of the near-pristine conditions shows that the longest periods with clean air masses were observed in summer, with a frequency of 17 %, while in wintertime only 1 % can be classified as a clean. Against a background of low concentrations of CO, EC, and OC in the near-pristine summertime, it was possible to identify pollution plumes that most likely came from crude-oil production sites located in the oil-rich regions of Western Siberia. Overall, our analysis indicates that most of the time the Siberian region is impacted by atmospheric pollution arising from biomass burning and anthropogenic emissions. A relatively clean atmosphere can be observed mainly in summer, when polluted species are removed by precipitation and the aerosol burden returns to near-pristine conditions.

Knowledge on the impact of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) on both human and environment health is scarce. Several studies sustain that soil is the environmental compartment designed to be the major recipient of engineered nanoparticles (NPs). With the aim of investigating the impact of commercially relevant NPs on soil functioning, we compared the effect of Ag and Co NPs, as well as cobalt and silver ions, on soil microbial community in the presence of Lumbricus rubellus. Earthworms specimens were placed in a rich‐C soil and fed with horse manure spiked with Ag‐NPs, Co‐NPs, Ag+ and Co2+ for a total amount of 10 mg of single pollutant kg‐1 soil. At the end of acute exposure (4 weeks) to pollutants, the following analyses were performed: soil metal contents, soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and nitrogen (MBN) , basal respiration, specific respiration (qCO2), phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs). The pollutants introduced with the food in the soil‐earthworm system affected the microbial activity increasing basal respiration and qCO2, while MBC and MBN content decreased. PLFAs of soil were affected by both pollutant NPS and ions supplied. The fatty acids significantly affected by treatments were C18:17 and C18:26,9 in soil. These results suggested that NPs could induce stress on soil microorganisms.

Atmospheric organic aerosols are generally classified as primary and secondary (POA and SOA) according to their formation processes. An actual separation, however, is challenging when the timescales of emission and gas-to-particle formation overlap. The presence of SOA formation in biomass burning plumes leads to scientific questions about whether the oxidized fraction of biomass burning aerosol is rather of secondary or primary origin, as some studies would suggest, and about the chemical compositions of oxidized biomass burning POA and SOA. In this study, we apply nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to investigate the functional group composition of fresh and aged biomass burning aerosols during an intensive field campaign in the Po Valley, Italy. The campaign was part of the EUCAARI project and was held at the rural station of San Pietro Capofiume in spring 2008. Factor analysis applied to the set of NMR spectra was used to apportion the wood burning contribution and other organic carbon (OC) source contributions, including aliphatic amines. Our NMR results, referred to the polar, water-soluble fraction of OC, show that fresh wood burning particles are composed of polyols and aromatic compounds, with a sharp resemblance to wood burning POA produced in wood stoves, while aged samples are clearly depleted of alcohols and are enriched in aliphatic acids with a smaller contribution of aromatic compounds. The comparison with biomass burning organic aerosols (BBOA) determined by high-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-TOF-AMS) at the site shows only a partial overlap between NMR BB-POA and AMS BBOA, which can be explained by either the inability of BBOA to capture all BB-POA composition, especially the alcohol fraction, or the fact that BBOA account for insoluble organic compounds unmeasured by the NMR. Therefore, an unambiguous composition for biomass burning POA could not be derived from this study, with NMR analysis indicating a higher O/C ratio compared to that measured for AMS BBOA. The comparison between the two techniques substantially improves when adding factors tracing possible contributions from biomass burning SOA, showing that the operational definitions of biomass burning organic aerosols are more consistent between techniques when including more factors tracing chemical classes over a range of oxidation levels. Overall, the non-fossil total carbon fraction was 50-57%, depending on the assumptions about the 14C content of non-fossil carbon, and the fraction of organic carbon estimated to be oxidized organic aerosol (OOA) from HR-TOF-AMS measurements was 73-100% modern

In the atmosphere nighttime removal of volatile organic compounds is initiated to a large extent by reaction with the nitrate radical (NO3) forming organic nitrates which partition between gas and particulate phase. Here we show based on particle phase measurements performed at a suburban site in the Netherlands that organic nitrates contribute substantially to particulate nitrate and organic mass. Comparisons with a chemistry transport model indicate that most of the measured particulate organic nitrates are formed by NO3 oxidation. Using aerosol composition data from three intensive observation periods at numerous measurement sites across Europe, we conclude that organic nitrates are a considerable fraction of fine particulate matter (PM1) at the continental scale. Organic nitrates represent 34% to 44% of measured submicron aerosol nitrate and are found at all urban and rural sites, implying a substantial potential of PM reduction by NOx emission control.

Size-resolved long-term measurements of atmospheric aerosol and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) concentrations as well as hygroscopicity were conducted at the remote Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO) in the central Amazon Basin over a one-year period and full seasonal cycle (March 2014–February 2015). The presented measurements provide a climatology of CCN properties for a characteristic central Amazonian rain forest site. The CCN measurements were continuously cycled through 10 levels of supersaturation (S = 0.11 to 1.10 %) and span the aerosol particle size range from 20 to 245 nm. The observed mean critical diameters of CCN activation range from 43 nm at S = 1.10 % to 172 nm at S = 0.11 %. The particle hygroscopicity exhibits a pronounced size dependence with lower values for the Aitken mode (κAit = 0.14 ± 0.03), elevated values for the accumulation mode (κAcc = 0.22 ± 0.05), and an overall mean value of κmean = 0.17 ± 0.06, consistent with high fractions of organic aerosol. The hygroscopicity parameter κ exhibits remarkably little temporal variability: no pronounced diurnal cycles, weak seasonal trends, and few short-term variations during long-range transport events. In contrast, the CCN number concentrations exhibit a pronounced seasonal cycle, tracking the pollution-related seasonality in total aerosol concentration. We find that the variability in the CCN concentrations in the central Amazon is mostly driven by aerosol particle number concentration and size distribution, while variations in aerosol hygroscopicity and chemical composition matter only during a few episodes. For modelling purposes, we compare different approaches of predicting CCN number concentration and present a novel parameterization, which allows accurate CCN predictions based on a small set of input data.

Il progetto “Impact of Nanoparticles in Environmental Sustainability and Ecotoxicity” (INESE), finanziato dall’Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT), ha studiato gli effetti delle nanoparticelle (NPs) ingegnerizzate su diversi ecosistemi (acquatici e terrestri), proponendo differenti sistemi biologici di studio (piante acquatiche, ricci di mare, organismi del suolo, pomodoro-impollinatore, ecc). In particolare l’UO dell’Università di Bologna ha focalizzato l’attenzione sullo studio dei modelli di interazione tra particelle di suolo, microorganismi (biomassa microbica), invertebrati (Lumbricus rubellus) e pianta (Solanum lycopersicum). In questa sede verranno riportati i risultati ottenuti dall’impatto delle nanoparticelle di argento (Ag-NPs) nell’ecosistema suolo. La crescita esponenziale dell’uso di materiali contenenti Ag-NPs è dovuta alla loro importante azione antimicrobica, sempre più sfruttata in diversi campi: dalla medicina (bendaggi) all’abbigliamento (magliette, calzini etc.), ai prodotti di igiene personale (spazzolini da denti), dalla sanificazione delle acque reflue con conseguente produzione di biosolidi impiegati come ammendanti agricoli, all’utilizzo in agricoltura di prodotti dedicati ("Nano-Argentum 10", Fa Nanosys, Svizzera). Studi basati su monitoraggio registrano l’aumento di Ag-NPs nei diversi comparti ambientali (aria-acqua e suolo) e dimostrano che il suolo è destinato ad esserne il maggior ricettore. Il C contenuto nella biomassa microbica del suolo (Cmic) è significativamente diminuita dopo l'esposizione ad Ag-NPs rispetto al controllo, e ciò viene anche confermato dalla diminuzione del DNA microbico estraibile e dall’analisi PCR-DGGE. Quest’ultima ha mostrato la capacità battericida dell’Ag-NPs, riducendo la comunità microbica di un suolo forestale a solo 5 ceppi di batteri resistenti. Riguardo all’impatto sugli invertebrati, il maggior contenuto di Ag rispetto al controllo trovato nei tessuti dei lombrichi è stato riconfermato dall’analisi ESEM che ha mostrato la presenza di Ag-NPs nell’intestino dei lombrichi, dopo depurazione. Inoltre l’esposizione di questi organismi ad Ag-NPs ha causato significativi cambiamenti nella composizione lipidica dei tessuti, rilevando quindi condizioni di stress. La somministrazione di Ag-NPs alle piante di pomodoro tramite l’acqua di irrigazione ha messo in evidenza come le NPs possano essere traslocate dalle radici alle foglie e infine al frutto edule. I potenziali rischi per la salute umana ed ambientale dovuti all’incontrollata diffusione delle NPs costituiscono motivi di grave preoccupazione per la comunità scientifica internazionale.

Item does not contain fulltext Two pilot studies of interleukin-1 (IL-1) blockade in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) showed blunted acute inflammatory response and overall favorable outcomes at 3 months follow-up. We hereby present a patient-level pooled analysis with extended follow-up of 40 patients with clinically stable STEMI randomized to anakinra, a recombinant IL-1 receptor antagonist, 100 mg/day for 14 days or placebo in a double-blinded fashion. End points included death, cardiac death, recurrent acute myocardial infarction (AMI), stroke, unstable angina, and symptomatic heart failure. Median follow-up was 28 (interquartile range 3 to 38) months. Sixteen patients (40%) had a total of 22 adverse cardiovascular events: 1 cardiac death, 4 recurrent AMI, 5 episodes of unstable angina pectoris requiring hospitalization and/or urgent revascularization, and 11 new diagnoses of heart failure. Treatment with anakinra was associated with a hazard ratio of 1.08 (95% confidence interval 0.31 to 3.74, p = 0.90) for the combined end point of death, recurrent AMI, unstable angina pectoris, or stroke and a hazard ratio of 0.16 (95% confidence interval 0.03 to 0.76, p = 0.008) for death or heart failure. In conclusion, IL-1 blockade with anakinra for 2 weeks appears, therefore, to have a neutral effect on recurrent ischemic events, whereas it may prevent new-onset heart failure long term after STEMI.

FIXED POINT THEOREMS FOR ALTMAN TYPE MAPPINGS

Direct-drive wind turbines often require full size converters, especially for latest offshore 10 MW units. This paper contributes to the evaluation of 10 MW, 600 poles, doubly fed induction generators, possibly enabling to reduce the converter size. The work relies on a lumped parameters design procedure and on finite elements mechanical and magnetic verifications, which seem to confirm the technical feasibility of the machine.
