We replace the fixed parameterizations for dynamic isobar amplitudes used in conventional partial-wave analyses by step-like functions, to extract them directly from the data. Doing so, we encounter continuous mathematical ambiguities and show ways to resolve them. In turn, we apply this method to a data set for three-pion final states collected at the COMPASS experiment and extract the dynamic isobar amplitudes for 24 partial waves. This work analyzes Monte Carlo events from the Compact Linear Collider to assess the uncertainties of Higgs hadronic decays. After a multivariate event selection, a likelihood fit is performed on the flavor estimation of the decays, to evaluate the sensitivity of the couplings of the Higgs to b and c quarks, as well as gluons. Secondarily, the quality of the segmentation of sub-surface laser-engraved plastic scintillators is investigated for a possible use in future particle calorimeters., Diese Arbeit untersucht Monte Carlo Ereignisse des Compact Linear Colliders zur Analyse von hadronischen Higgs-Zerfällen. The GERDA experiment is searching for the neutrinoless double beta (0vbb) decay of Ge-76. By that, it tries to answer two long standing questions about the neutrino: 'How large is the neutrino mass?' and 'Is the neutrino either Dirac or Majorana particle?'. Additionally, an observation would imply that lepton number is not conserved, which is an important puzzle piece for theories explaining the asymmetry between matter and anti-matter in the universe. The effective Majorana electron neutrino mass can be extracted from the half-life of the 0vbb -decay. However, during that conversion large uncertainties are added through nuclear matrix elements, that are calculated by a variety of theoretical models. Experimental input is required to constrain such models and their parameters to improve the reliability of the calculations. Additional input can be obtained by comparing the model predictions for the two neutrino double beta (2vbb) decay to the ground state, but also for decay modes to excited states of the daughter nuclide with measurements. The latter decay modes have not yet been observed in the case of Ge-76. The event signature of transitions to excited states is enhanced by de-excitation gamma-rays. The GERDA experiment employs an array of bare germanium semi-conductor detectors in a liquid argon cryostat. This array is suited to search for excited state transition in the 2vbb and 0vbb -decay modes using data with coincident energy depositions in multiple detectors. This work presents the preparation and characterisation of this data set, which includes the evaluation and correction of crosstalk between detector channels, the determination of the energy resolution of the detectors and the modelling of background. In an analysis combining 22 kgyr of Phase I data with the first 35 kgyr of Phase II data of GERDA, no signal has been observed for 2/0vbb -decays of Ge-76 to the energetically lowest three excited states in Se-76. The Galactic Center (GC) has been observed with MAGIC. A detailed study of the energy spectrum and morphology of the GC Gamma-ray source could be performed. A possible TeV counterpart of the elongated radio source called “the Arc”, which is at about 0.2° from the GC has been detected. Apart from this, a new method has been developed, which allows for the correction of Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescope data regarding the effect of time and altitude dependent atmospheric transmission by using LIDAR., Das Galaktische Zentrum wurde mit Hilfe der MAGIC Teleskope beobachtet. For the upgrade of the particle physics experiment Belle towards Belle II a new pixel detector is envisaged. This detector consists of eight million pixels, made of DEPFETs. These DEPFETs will be damaged via radiation during the experiment. In this work the influences of radiation as well as the changes in the properties of the pixel detector were investigated. Production parameters were varied at test structures to ensure optimal operation conditions during the experiment., Für das Upgrade des Teilchenphysikexperiments Belle zu Belle II wird ein neuer Pixeldetektor entwickelt. The precision of the measurement of the top quark mass achievable with a threshold scan at CLIC and ILC was studied. The results show that combined statistic and systematic uncertainties below 100 MeV can be achieved. The CRESST experiment aims to directly detect dark matter particles via recoils off nuclei in CaWO4 target crystals. The optimization of existing detector modules for CRESST-III, in particular the reduction of the phonon detector threshold to <100 eV, is discussed. Searching for new physics in rare B meson decays, we perform a model-independent global fit of three Wilson coefficients and 28 nuisance parameters to 59 measurements. The posterior distribution of the parameters is obtained through adaptive importance sampling, initialized from Markov chains with a new algorithm. The data are compatible with the standard model, but allow large new-physics contributions. The CRESST-experiment aims at detecting Dark Matter particles, so-called WIMPs, by scattering processes. The measurement includes scintillation light and phononic excitations of the detector crystal. Crystals with a high light yield are favorable, as they provide a good background discrimination capability, even at low energies. Within this work, several methods for determining the light yield were developed. The provide a mean to evaluate detectors which have been built using a newly developed process optimized for higher light yields. Furthermore, this work contains investigations on the thermo-mechanical stress and position-dependent characteristics of the detectors., Das CRESST-Experiment zielt darauf ab, Teilchen der Dunklen Materie, sogenannte WIMPs, durch Streuprozesse nachzuweisen. Gemessen werden sowohl die dabei im Detektorkristall angeregten Phononen als auch entstehendes Szintillationslicht. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wurden mehrere Verfahren entwickelt, die Lichtausbeute unterschiedlicher Kristalle zu bestimmen und zu vergleichen. Diese dienten zur Beurteilung von Detektoren, die mit einem neuen, auf hohe Lichtausbeute optimierten Prozess hergestellt wurden. Zudem wurden thermomechanische Spannungen und ortsabhängige Charakteristika der Detektoren untersucht.

A muon collider combines the advantages of proton-proton and electron-positron colliders, sidestepping many of their disadvantages, and has the potential to make discoveries and precision measurements at high energies. However, muons bring their own technical challenges, largely relating to their instability. We present a summary of the motivations and R&D efforts for a muon collider. We detail a scheme for preparing high-luminosity muon beams on timescales shorter than the muon lifetime, and an experiment to demonstrate aspects of this scheme at the Max Planck Institute for Physics. We also investigate the potentials to discover physics beyond the standard model at a muon collider., Ein Myon-Collider vereint die Vorteile eines Proton-Proton- und Elektron-Positron-Colliders und umgeht deren wesentliche Nachteile. Wir besprechen ein Experiment, das Aspekte dieses Systems am Max-Planck-Institut für Physik demonstrieren kann. Wir diskutieren auch die Möglichkeiten, Physik jenseits des Standardmodells an einem Myon-Collider zu entdecken.

The light-meson spectrum is an important ingredient to understand quantum chromodynamics, the theory of strong interaction at low energies, where quarks and gluons are confined into hadrons. However, measuring this spectrum experimentally is very challenging, due to the large number of overlapping resonances it contains. To disentangle this complicated spectrum, partial-wave techniques are used. At the COMPASS experiment at CERN, the light-meson spectrum is studied in diffractive dissociation reactions. One such reaction, π- + p→π- π+ π- π+ π- + p, puts the analysis methodology to the test, because the large number of final-state particles requires a dedicated model-selection procedure and introduces a complicated background situation. In this thesis, such a model-selection procedure is developed and verified on simulated events. In addition to finding a suitable model, it can be used to assess the reliability of the results. The model-selection procedure is then successfully applied to data from the COMPASS 2008 data-taking campaign. A partial-wave decomposition is performed using the selected model. Sie findet nicht nur ein geeignetes Modell, sondern kann auch benutzt werden, um die Zuverlässigkeit der Resultate zu beurteilen. Die Modellauswahl wird erfolgreich für die Daten aus der COMPASS Messkampagne von 2008 eingesetzt. Die Resultate der Partialwellenzerlegung mit dem gefundenen Modell werden mit Partialwellenzerlegungen anderer Endzustände verglichen, wobei eine gute Übereinstimmung festgestellt werden kann.

CRESST is a direct Dark Matter search experiment aiming at the detection of WIMP-like Dark Matter scattering off nuclei in scintillating CaWO4 crystals operated as cryogenic detectors. A method based on artificial neural networks to reject events containing a pulse with distorted shape is developed and applied. Data from 5 modules operated for more than 2 years are analyzed. For 2 out of these 5 detectors an extraordinarily low threshold of <0.4 keV is achieved. This allows to constrain the WIMP-nucleon cross-section, in particular, for light WIMPs, where below ~1.7 GeV/c² a world-leading limit is obtained., CRESST ist ein Experiment zur direkten Suche von Dunkler Materie mittels des Nachweises von WIMP-induzierten Kernrückstößen in szintillierenden CaWO4-Kristallen, die als Kryodetektoren betrieben werden. The neutrinoless double beta (0νββ) decay experiment GERDA has taken 21.6 kg·yr of data in Phase I. A comprehensive background model is presented. The half life of the two-neutrino double beta decay of Ge-76 has been determined as (1.926 ± 0.094) x 1021 yr. No indication for a 0νββ signal has been found. A lower limit at 90% C.I. on 0νββ half life of 1.85 x 1025 yr from GERDA data alone and 2.86 x 1025 yr from the combination with data of past HPGe experiments has been derived using Bayesian analysis., Das GERDA Experiment zur Suche nach neutrinolosem doppelten Betazerfall (0νββ), hat in Phase I 21.6 kg·yr Daten genommen. The major objectives of the work described in this dissertation were to gain a better understanding of the backgrounds in the CRESST experiment and to study how to reduce them from their present levels. A major contribution in the energy region of interest was identified as coming from the metal clamps used to hold the scintillators in place. On the basis of this study, different clamp designs were developed and tested in the test facility at Gran Sasso with the goal of minimizing clamp-related background in future runs. Complementary to reducing backgrounds, a more accurate description of the light yield for different background sources is essential. It is shown here for the first time that there exists an energy dependence in the light yield for α-particles in the CRESST detectors. Results are also presented from the application of a semi-empirical model to describe the light yield distribution of electrons/gammas, α-particles and nuclear recoils., Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Dissertation wurden mögliche Ursachen der vorhandenen Untergrundereignisse im CRESST Experiment untersucht und die metallischen Halteklammern der Kristalle als deren Hauptquelle identifiziert. Neue Konzepte für die Halteklammern wurden entwickelt und in einem eigens dafür im Gran Sasso Untergrundlabor aufgebauten Testkryostaten untersucht. Neben einer Verringerung des Untergrunds ist die genaue Kenntnis einer eventuellen Energieabhängigkeit der Szintillationsausbeute zur Reduktion systematischer Unsicherheiten von essentieller Bedeutung für die Identifikation etwaiger Untergrundereignisse. Für die bei CRESST verwendeten Kristalle wurde erstmals eine Energieabhängigkeit der Lichtausbeute von Alphateilchen festgestellt. Des weiteren wurde ein semi-empirisches Modell zur Beschreibung der energieabhängigen Lichtausbeute von Alphateilchen, Elektronen und Gamma-Strahlung sowie von Kernrückstößen angewandt.

The GERDA experiment searches for the neutrinoless double beta decay in Ge-76, by operating bare HPGe detectors in ultra-pure liquid Ar. This dissertation presents a first decomposition of the background measured in the current data-taking phase. The background at the energy of interest was found to be dominated by Bi-214, Tl-208 and K-42 gamma-rays, with secondary contributions from K-42 and Bi-214 beta-rays, and Po-210 alpha-rays. For the forthcoming upgrade of the apparatus, a new HPGe detector design (BEGe) has been studied, with focus on its capability of suppressing the identified backgrounds through pulse shape analysis. This included the development of a comprehensive modeling of the detectors and the experimental characterization of their response to surface interactions. The achieved results show that GERDA can improve the present limit on the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life by an order of magnitude., Das GERDA-Experiment sucht nach dem neutrinolosen Doppelbetazerfall (0vbb) in Ge-76 in dem es HPGe Detektoren in flüssigem Argon betreibt. Für das Upgrade des Experiments wurde ein neues HPGe Detektor Design (BEGe) studiert, wobei besonders die Fähigkeit zur Unterdrückung der wichtigen Untergründe durch Puls-Form Analyse betrachtet wurde. Dies beinhaltete die Entwicklung einer umfassenden Modellierung des Detektors und die experimentelle Charakterisierung der Signalantwort auf Oberflächenereignisse. Die erzielten Resultate zeigen, dass GERDA in der Lage sein wird, das aktuelle Halbwertszeitlimit des 0vbb um eine Größenordnung zu verbessern.

The first measurement of the luminosity for data from the muon-scattering program of the COMPASS experiment is presented. Based on this result, the cross section for the quasi-real photoproduction of charged hadrons with high transverse momenta in muon-deuteron scattering at a center-of-mass energy of 17.4 GeV is determined. A muon collider combines the advantages of proton-proton and electron-positron colliders, sidestepping many of their disadvantages, and has the potential to make discoveries and precision measurements at high energies. However, muons bring their own technical challenges, largely relating to their instability. We present a summary of the motivations and R&D efforts for a muon collider. We detail a scheme for preparing high-luminosity muon beams on timescales shorter than the muon lifetime, and an experiment to demonstrate aspects of this scheme at the Max Planck Institute for Physics.
