Protic ionic liquids are promising electrolytes for fuel cell applications. They would allow for an increase in operation temperatures to more than 100 °C, facilitating water and heat management and, thus, increasing overall efficiency. As ionic liquids consist of bulky charged molecules, the structure of the electric double layer significantly differs from that of aqueous electrolytes. In order to elucidate the nanoscale structure of the electrolyte-electrode interface, we employ atomic force spectroscopy, in conjunction with theoretical modeling using molecular dynamics. Investigations of the low-acidic protic ionic liquid diethylmethylammonium triflate, in contact with a platinum (100) single crystal, reveal a layered structure consisting of alternating anion and cation layers at the interface, as already described for aprotic ionic liquids. The structured double layer depends on the applied electrode potential and extends several nanometers into the liquid, whereby the stiffness decreases with increasing distance from the interface. The presence of water distorts the layering, which, in turn, significantly changes the system's electrochemical performance. Our results indicate that for low-acidic ionic liquids, a careful adjustment of the water content is needed in order to enhance the proton transport to and from the catalytic electrode.

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effect of SARS-Cov-2 vaccination in hemodialysis patients, search for risk factors for non- or low-response, and to measure the effect of a third booster vaccination in non- or low-responders. Methods SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies and the virus-neutralizing capacity were measured 4-5 weeks after a full standard vaccination in 95 chronic hemodialysis patients and 60 controls. IgG titers > 30 AU/mL served to classify participants as responders. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was used to search for risk factors of reduced vaccination success. Patients with vaccination failure were offered a third booster dosage. Results 82.1% of the patient cohort as compared to 98.3% of the healthy control group were able to mount SARS-CoV-2 titers above 30 AU/mL after two standard vaccine doses. Mean IgG antibody titers were lower in hemodialysis patients than controls (78 ± 35 vs. 90 ± 20 AU/mL, p = 0.002). Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis showed age and immunosuppressive medication as major risk factors for vaccination failure with a decreased probability of successful vaccination of -6.1% (95% CI -1.2 to -10.9) per increase in age of one year and -87.4% (95% CI -98.0 to -21.5) in patients on immunosuppressive therapy (crude odds ratio for vaccination failure for immunosuppressive therapy 6.4). Ten out of 17 patients with non-response to vaccination were offered a third dose. Booster vaccination after the second dose induced an increase in effective antibody titers of >30 AU/mL in seven out of ten patients 4-5 weeks later (70%). Conclusion Standard SARS-CoV-2 vaccination schemes are highly effective in mounting protective neutralizing IgG antibodies in chronic hemodialysis patients. Nevertheless, response to vaccination is diminished as compared to a healthy control group. Major risk factors for vaccination failure are older age and immunosuppressive therapy. In non- or low-responders to standard vaccination a third booster vaccination was able to induce effective antibody titers in about 70% of patients, indicating that a third booster vaccination might be preferable to decreasing immunosuppressive therapy.

Understanding the Earth's climate system during past periods of high atmospheric CO 2 is crucial for forecasting climate change under anthropogenically-elevated CO 2 . The Mesozoic Era is believed to have coincided with a long-term Greenhouse climate, and many of our temperature reconstructions come from stable isotopes of marine biotic calcite, in particular from belemnites, an extinct group of molluscs with carbonate hard-parts. Yet, temperatures reconstructed from the oxygen isotope composition of belemnites are consistently colder than those derived from other temperature proxies, leading to large uncertainties around Mesozoic sea temperatures. Here we apply clumped isotope palaeothermometry to two distinct carbonate phases from exceptionally well-preserved belemnites in order to constrain their living habitat, and improve temperature reconstructions based on stable oxygen isotopes. We show that belemnites precipitated both aragonite and calcite in warm, open ocean surface waters, and demonstrate how previous low estimates of belemnite calcification temperatures has led to widespread underestimation of Mesozoic sea temperatures by ca. 12 °C, raising estimates of some of the lowest temperature estimates for the Jurassic period to values which approach modern mid-latitude sea surface temperatures. Twin-screw wet granulation is a crucial unit operation in shifting from pharmaceutical batch to continuous processes, but granulation kinetics as well as residence times are yet poorly understood. Experimental findings are highly dependent on screw configuration as well as formulation, and thus have limited universal validity. In this study, an experimental design with a repetitive screw setup was conducted to measure the effect of specific feed load (SFL), liquid-to-solid ratio (L/S), and inclusion of a distributive feed screw on particle size distribution (PSD) and shape as well as residence time distribution of a hydrophilic lactose/microcrystalline cellulose based formulation. An intermediate sampling point was obtained by changing inlet ports along the screw axis. Camera-based particle size analysis (QICPIC) indicated no significant change of PSD between the first and second kneading section, except for low L/S and low SFL where fines increase. Mean residence time was approximated as a bilinear fit of L/S and SFL. Moreover, large mass flow pulsations were observed by continuous camera measurements of residence time distribution and correlated to hold-up of the twin-screw granulator. These findings indicate fast granulation kinetics and process instabilities for high mean residence times, questioning current standards of two kneading compartments for wet granulation. The present study further underlines the necessity of developing a multiscale simulation approach including particle dynamics in the future.

Herein we show that protic ionic liquids (PILs) are promising electrolytes for fuel cells operating in the temperature range 100-120 °C. N , N -Diethyl- N -methyl-3-sulfopropan-1-ammonium hydrogen sulfate ([DEMSPA][HSA]), N , N -diethyl- N -methyl-3-sulfopropan-1-ammonium triflate ([DEMSPA][TfO]), N , N -diethyl-3-sulfopropan-1-ammonium hydrogen sulfate ([DESPA][HSA]), and N , N -diethyl-3-sulfopropan-1-ammonium triflate ([DESPA][TfO]) are investigated in this study with regard to their specific conductivity, thermal stability, viscosity, and electrochemical properties. The [DEMSPA][TfO] and [DESPA][TfO] electrolytes offer high limiting current densities for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on platinum electrodes, that is, about 1 order of magnitude larger than 98% H 3 PO 4 . This is explained by the minor poisoning of the Pt catalyst and the significantly larger product of the oxygen self-diffusion coefficient and concentration in these two PILs.

Tetrahydroisoquinolines (TIQs) such as salsolinol (SAL), norsalsolinol (NSAL) and their methylated derivatives N-methyl-norsalsolinol (NMNSAL) and N-methyl-salsolinol (NMSAL), modulate dopaminergic neurotransmission and metabolism in the central nervous system. Dopaminergic neurotransmission is thought to play an important role in the pathophysiology of chronic tic disorders, such as Tourette syndrome (TS). Therefore, the urinary concentrations of these TIQ derivatives were measured in patients with TS and patients with comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (TS + ADHD) compared with controls. Seventeen patients with TS, 12 with TS and ADHD, and 19 age-matched healthy controls with no medication took part in this study. Free levels of NSAL, NMNSAL, SAL, and NMSAL in urine were measured by a two-phase chromatographic approach. Furthermore, individual TIQ concentrations in TS patients were used in receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis to examine the diagnostic value. NSAL concentrations were elevated significantly in TS [434.67 ± 55.4 nmol/l (standard error of mean = S.E.M.), two-way ANOVA, p < 0.0001] and TS + ADHD patients [605.18 ± 170.21 nmol/l (S.E.M.), two-way ANOVA, p < 0.0001] compared with controls [107.02 ± 33.18 nmol/l (S.E.M.), two-way ANOVA, p < 0.0001] and NSAL levels in TS + ADHD patients were elevated significantly in comparison with TS patients (two-way ANOVA, p = 0.017). NSAL demonstrated an AUC of 0.93 ± 0.046 (S.E.M) the highest diagnostic value of all metabolites for the diagnosis of TS. Our results suggest a dopaminergic hyperactivity underlying the pathophysiology of TS and ADHD. In addition, NSAL concentrations in urine may be a potential diagnostic biomarker of TS.

In this study, Brønsted-acidic proton conducting ionic liquids are considered as potential new electrolytes for polymer membrane fuel cells with operating temperatures above 100 °C. N -Methyltaurine and trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (TfOH) were mixed at various stoichiometric ratios in order to investigate the influence of an acid or base excess. The proton conductivity and self-diffusion of the "neat" and with 6 wt% water samples were investigated by following electrochemical and NMR methods. The composition change in the complete species and the relative proton transport mechanism based on the NMR results are discussed in detail. During fuel cell operation, the presence of significant amounts of residual water is unavoidable. In PEFC electrolytes, the predominating proton transfer process depends on the cooperative mechanism, when PILs are fixed on the polymer matrix within the membrane. Due to the comparable acidity of the cation [2-Sema] + and the hydroxonium cation, with excess N -methyltaurine or H 2 O in the compositions, fast proton exchange reactions between the protonated [2-Sema] + cation, N -methyltaurine and H 2 O can be envisaged. Thus, an increasing ratio of cooperative proton transport could be observed. Mixed ionic-electronic-conducting perovskites such as SrTiO 3 are promising materials to be employed in efficient energy conversion or information processing. These materials exhibit a self-doping effect related to the formation of oxygen vacancies and electronic charge carriers upon reduction. It has been found that dislocations play a prominent role in this self-doping process, serving as easy reduction sites, which result in the formation of conducting filaments along the dislocations. While this effect has been investigated in detail with theoretical calculations and direct observations using local-conductivity atomic force microscopy, the present work highlights the optical properties of dislocations in SrTiO 3 single crystals. Using the change in optical absorption upon reduction as an indicator, two well-defined arrangements of dislocations, namely a bicrystal boundary and a slip band induced by mechanical deformation, are investigated by means of scanning near-field optical microscopy. In both cases, the regions with enhanced dislocation density can be clearly identified as regions with higher optical absorption. Assisted by ab initio calculations, confirming that the agglomeration of oxygen vacancies significantly change the local dielectric constants of the material, the results provide direct evidence that reduced dislocations can be classified as alien matter embedded in the SrTiO 3 matrix.

The early Eocene (c. 56 - 48 million years ago) experienced some of the highest global temperatures in Earth's history since the Mesozoic, with no polar ice. Reports of contradictory ice-rafted erratics and cold water glendonites in the higher latitudes have been largely dismissed due to ambiguity of the significance of these purported cold-climate indicators. Here we apply clumped isotope paleothermometry to a traditionally qualitative abiotic proxy, glendonite calcite, to generate quantitative temperature estimates for northern mid-latitude bottom waters. Our data show that the glendonites of the Danish Basin formed in waters below 5 °C, at water depths of <300 m. Such near-freezing temperatures have not previously been reconstructed from proxy data for anywhere on the early Eocene Earth, and these data therefore suggest that regionalised cool episodes punctuated the background warmth of the early Eocene, likely linked to eruptive phases of the North Atlantic Igneous Province.

Understanding of the processes of petroleum source rock (SR) accumulation in lacustrine rift basins and the behavior of lake systems as long-term carbon sinks is fragmentary. Investigation of an 800 m thick (500 m core and ~ 300 m outcrop), deep-lacustrine, Oligocene section in Vietnam, provides a rare insight into the controls and deposition of organic carbon (OC) and SR formation in continental rift basins. A multidisciplinary dataset, combining elemental data, inorganic and organic geochemistry with sedimentology, shows that the richest alginite-prone, sapropelic SR developed during periods of relative tectonic quiescence characterized by moderate primary productivity in a mainly dysoxic lacustrine basin. Increased rift activity and further development of graben morphology intensified water column stratification and anoxia, which hindered nutrient recycling. Sapropelic organic matter (OM) continued to accumulate, but with increasing amorphous OM content and decreasing total OC values. Periods of increased seasonality were characterized by thermocline weakening, enhanced mixing of water columns, increased primary productivity and diatom blooming. The results suggest that a change from dysoxia towards anoxia or extreme primary productivity does not necessarily enhance OC burial and SR quality. External nutrient input from a phosphate-rich hinterland is sufficient for sapropel formation, whereas the main limiting factor is methanogenesis.

Proton-conducting ionic liquids (PILs) are discussed herein as potential new electrolytes for polymer membrane fuel cells, suitable for operation temperatures above 100 °C. During fuel cell operation, the presence of significant amounts of residual water is unavoidable, even at these elevated temperatures. By using electrochemical and NMR methods, the impact of residual water on 2-sulfoethylmethylammonium triflate [2-Sema][TfO], 1-ethylimidazolium triflate [1-EIm][TfO] and diethylmethylammonium triflate [Dema][TfO] is analyzed. The cationic acidity of these PILs varies by over ten orders of magnitude. Appropriate amounts of the PIL and H2O were mixed at various molar ratios to obtain compositions, varying from the neat PIL to H2O-excess conditions. The conductivity of [2-Sema][TfO] exponentially increases depending on the H2O concentration. The results from 1H-NMR spectroscopy and self-diffusion coefficient measurements by 1H field-gradient NMR indicate a fast proton exchange process between [2-Sema]+ and H2O. Conversely, [1-EIm][TfO] and [Dema][TfO] show only very slow or non-significant proton exchange, respectively, with H2O during the time-scale relevant for transport. The proton conduction follows a combination of vehicle and cooperative mechanisms in highly acidic PIL, while a mostly vehicle mechanism in medium and low acidic PIL occurs. Therefore, highly acidic ionic liquids are promising new candidates for polymer electrolyte fuel cells at an elevated temperature.

As a high-voltage spinel, LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (LNMO) is a promising candidate for high energy density cathodes in lithium-ion batteries (LiBs). The material has not yet achieved any commercial success, as there remain problems with capacity fade after extended charge and discharge cycling. In order to enable improvements, it is necessary to understand the fundamental underlying processes in the material. In this experimental study, we present operando Raman measurements to investigate the potential-resolved structural evolution of ordered LNMO as a cathode material during the charging and discharging process. Using the method of Raman spectroscopy, only two phases can be unequivocally distinguished in the case of ordered LNMO, namely, LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 and Ni 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 (NMO). The half-delithiated phase, Li 0.5 Ni 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , cannot be discriminated by using this spectroscopic method. The dynamics of the phase changes between LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 and Ni 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 differ for lithiation and delithiation. Long-term operando Raman measurements of half-cells prove that a decomposition of the solvent takes place and that the conductive salt LiPF 6 is consumed, i.e., the concentration of PF 6 - is strongly decreasing. The solvent component ethylene carbonate (EC) is preferentially decomposed during the cycling process, and byproducts such as esters and alcohols can be detected.

Electroreduction experiments on metal oxides are well established for investigating the nature of the material change in memresistive devices, whose basic working principle is an electrically-induced reduction. While numerous research studies on this topic have been conducted, the influence of extended defects such as dislocations has not been addressed in detail hitherto. Here, we show by employing thermal microscopy to detect local Joule heating effects in the first stage of electroreduction of SrTiO 3 that the current is channelled along extended defects such as dislocations which were introduced mechanically by scratching or sawing. After prolonged degradation, the matrix of the crystal is also electroreduced and the influence of the initially present dislocations diminished. At this stage, a hotspot at the anode develops due to stoichiometry polarisation leading not only to the gliding of existing dislocations, but also to the evolution of new dislocations. Such a formation is caused by electrical and thermal stress showing dislocations may play a significant role in resistive switching effects.

Three dimensional(3D)-printing via fused deposition modeling (FDM) allows the production of individualized solid dosage forms. However, for bringing this benefit to the patient, active pharmaceutical ingredient (API)-loaded filaments of pharmaceutical grade excipients are necessary as feedstock and have to be produced industrially. As large-scale production of API-loaded filaments has not been described in literature, this study presents a development of 3D-printable filaments, which can continuously be produced via hot-melt extrusion. Further, a combination of testing methods for mechanical resilience of filaments was applied to improve the prediction of their printability. Eudragit RL was chosen as a sustained release polymer and theophylline (30%) as thermally stable model drug. Stearic acid (7%) and polyethylene glycol 4000 (10%), were evaluated as suitable plasticizers for producing 3D-printable filaments. The two formulations were printed into solid dosage forms and analyzed regarding their dissolution profiles. This revealed that stearic acid maintained sustained release properties of the matrix whereas polyethylene glycol 4000 did not. Analysis of the continuous extrusion process was done using a design of experiments. It showed that powder feed rate and speed of the stretching device used after extrusion predominantly determine the diameter of the filament and thereby the mechanical resilience of a filament.

3D printing evolved as a promising technique to improve individualization of drug therapy. In particular, when printing sustained release solid dosage forms, as for instance implants, inserts, and also tablets, estimation of the drug release profile in vivo is necessary. In most cases, corresponding analyses cannot be performed at hospital or community pharmacies. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop a sustained release drug delivery system produced via 3D printing, which allows dose adaption and estimation of drug release at the same time. Filaments as feedstock for the printer were produced via hot-melt extrusion and consisted of Eudragit® RL as sustained release polymer, 30% theophylline as model active pharmaceutical ingredient, and stearic acid as solid plasticizer. Assuming that the surface/mass ratio was constant, network structures of different densities were printed as novel solid dosage form. Their weight (263 to 668 mg), thereby their dose, and surface area, determined using X-ray microcomputed tomography, showed a linear correlation with the fill density. The specific surface area of the network hardly varied with changing fill density. Dissolution studies showed a slower drug release for dosage forms with a denser network. Higuchi's model was used for prediction of drug release and showed limited applicability due to different release kinetics for different fill densities. However, using linear interpolation for the prediction resulted in good RMSEP values between 1.4 and 3.7%. These findings might be useful to enable customized production of sustained release solid dosage forms via 3D printing in hospital and community pharmacies in the future.

Interface strain and its influence on the ionic transport along hetero-interfaces has gained a lot of attention over the last decade and is controversially discussed. We investigate the relaxation of mismatch induced interfacial strain as a function of the degree of orientation/texture of the columnar crystallites and assess the impact on the oxygen ion conductivity in Er2O3/YSZ multilayer systems. Results from X-ray diffraction clearly show, that the width of the strained hetero-interface region increases with an increasing degree of orientation of the crystallites. The combined impact of film texture and strain at the hetero-interfaces of the film on the ionic conductivity however is not easily deduced from these measurements. The samples with the highest degree of orientation, i.e. with only one azimuthal variant, show strong anisotropic electrical properties. In samples with a lower degree of orientation, i.e. samples with a fiber texture, anisotropic properties cannot be detected, possibly due to a geometrical averaging of the electrical properties. The expected strain induced monotonic increase of the ionic conductivity with decreasing layer thickness and thus increasing interfacial influence could only be detected for samples with a fiber texture and a considerable degree of crystallite misorientation. This leads to the important conclusion that the texture and therefore the nature of the grain boundaries and their network influence the ionic conductivity of the multilayer thin films in the same order of magnitude as the misfit induced interface strain. Thus, the potential design of strain-controlled ionic conductors requires additionally the control of the microstructure in terms of grain orientation.

The Li + ion transfer between a solid and a liquid Li + electrolyte has been investigated by DC polarisation techniques. The current density i is measured as a function of the electrochemical potential drop Δ[small mu, Greek, tilde] Li + at the interface, using a liquid electrolyte with different Li + concentrations. The subject of this experimental study is the interface between the solid electrolyte Ta-substituted lithium lanthanum zirconate (Li 6.6 La 3 Zr 1.6 Ta 0.4 O 12 ) and a liquid electrolyte consisting of LiPF 6 dissolved in ethylene carbonate/dimethyl carbonate (1 : 1). The functional course of i vs. Δ[small mu, Greek, tilde] Li + can be described by a serial connection between a constant ohmic resistance R slei and a current dependent thermally activated ion transfer process. For the present solid-liquid electrolyte interface the areal resistance R slei of the surface layer is independent of the Li + concentration in the liquid electrolyte. At room temperature a value of about 300 Ω cm 2 is found. The constant ohmic resistance R slei can be attributed to a surface layer on the solid electrolyte with a (relatively) low conductivity (solid-liquid electrolyte interphase). The low conducting surface layer is formed by degradation reactions with the liquid electrolyte. R slei is considerably increased if a small amount (ppm) of water is added to the liquid electrolyte. The thermally activated ionic transfer process obeys a Butler-Volmer like behaviour, resulting in an exchange current density i 0 depending on the Li + concentration in the liquid electrolyte by a power-law. At a Li + concentration of 1 mol l -1 a value of 53.1 μA cm -2 is found. A charge transfer coefficient α of ∼0.44 is measured. The finding of a superposed constant ohmic resistance due to a solid-liquid electrolyte interphase and a current dependent thermally activated ion transfer process is confirmed by the results of two former experimental studies from the literature, performing AC measurements/EIS.

The influence of the water content of 2-sulfoethylmethylammonium trifluoromethanesulfonate [2-Sema][TfO] on the double layer properties of the interface of platinum and the proton conducting ionic liquid (PIL) is investigated by means of impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. By fitting the impedance spectra as complex capacitances, up to four differential double layer capacitances and corresponding time constants are obtained, depending on the potential (U = 0-1.6 V/RHE), water content (0.7-6.1 wt%) and temperature (T = 70-110 °C). Within the whole potential range investigated, a high frequency capacitance, C 1 , and a low frequency capacitance, C 2 , can be calculated. In the potential region of hydrogen underpotential deposition (H UPD ), C 1 can be separated into two parts, C 1a and C 1b . Whereas the high frequency capacitive processes can mainly be attributed to ion transport processes in the double layer, the low frequency process is ascribed to changes in the interfacial layer, including ad-/desorption and Faradaic processes. Alternative interpretations regarding the reorientation of ions, reconstruction of the metal surface and partial electron transfer between anions and Pt are considered.

Purpose: This article reviews organ donor pathophysiology as it relates to medication use with the goal of maximizing the successful procurement and transplantation of donor organs., Summary: The number of patients requiring organ transplantation continues to grow, yet organ donation rates remain flat, making it critical to appropriately manage each organ donor in order to ensure viability of all transplantable organs. The care given to one organ donor is tantamount to the care of several transplant recipients. Aggressive donor management ensures that the largest number of organs can be successfully procured and improves the organs' overall quality. Hospital pharmacists are responsible for processing orders and preparing the medications outlined in donor management algorithms developed by their respective medical systems. It is important that pharmacists understand the details of the medications used in these protocols in order to critically evaluate each medication order and appropriately manage the donor. Typical medications used in organ donors after brain death include medications for blood pressure management and fluid resuscitation, medications necessary for electrolyte management, blood products, vasopressors, hormone replacement therapy, antiinfectives, anticoagulants, paralytics, and organ preservation solutions., Conclusion: It is essential to provide optimal pharmacotherapy for each organ donor to ensure organ recovery and donation. Purpose: There is no standardization for teaching activities or a requirement for residency programs to offer specific teaching programs to pharmacy residents. This study will determine the perceived value of providing teaching opportunities to postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1) pharmacy residents in the perspective of the residency program director. The study will also identify the features, depth, and breadth of the teaching experiences afforded to PGY-1 pharmacy residents., Methods: A 20-question survey was distributed electronically to 868 American Society of Health-System Pharmacists-accredited PGY-1 residency program directors., Results: The survey was completed by 322 program directors. Developing pharmacy educators was found to be highly valued by 57% of the program directors. Advertisement of teaching opportunities was found to be statistically significant when comparing program directors with a high perceived value for providing teaching opportunities to program demographics. Statistically significant differences were identified associating development of a teaching portfolio, evaluation of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences students, and delivery of didactic lectures with program directors who highly value developing pharmacy educators., Conclusions: Future residency candidates interested in teaching or a career in academia may utilize these findings to identify programs that are more likely to value developing pharmacy educators. The Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE) was the most rapid and sustained increase in marine Phanerozoic biodiversity. What generated this biotic response across Palaeozoic seascapes is a matter of debate; several intrinsic and extrinsic drivers have been suggested. One is Ordovician climate, which in recent years has undergone a paradigm shift from a text-book example of an extended greenhouse to an interval with transient cooling intervals - at least during the Late Ordovician. Here, we show the first unambiguous evidence for a sudden Mid Ordovician icehouse, comparable in magnitude to the Quaternary glaciations. We further demonstrate the initiation of this icehouse to coincide with the onset of the GOBE. This finding is based on both abiotic and biotic proxies obtained from the most comprehensive geochemical and palaeobiological dataset yet collected through this interval. We argue that the icehouse conditions increased latitudinal and bathymetrical temperature and oxygen gradients initiating an Early Palaeozoic Great Ocean Conveyor Belt. This fuelled the GOBE, as upwelling zones created new ecospace for the primary producers. A subsequent rise in δ(13)C ratios known as the Middle Darriwilian Isotopic Carbon Excursion (MDICE) may reflect a global response to increased bioproductivity encouraged by the onset of the GOBE.

The Jurassic (∼201-145 Myr ago) was long considered a warm 'greenhouse' period; more recently cool, even 'icehouse' episodes have been postulated. However, the mechanisms governing transition between so-called Warm Modes and Cool Modes are poorly known. Here we present a new large high-quality oxygen-isotope dataset from an interval that includes previously suggested mode transitions. Our results show an especially abrupt earliest Middle Jurassic (∼174 Ma) mid-latitude cooling of seawater by as much as 10 °C in the north-south Laurasian Seaway, a marine passage that connected the equatorial Tethys Ocean to the Boreal Sea. Coincidence in timing with large-scale regional lithospheric updoming of the North Sea region is striking, and we hypothesize that northward oceanic heat transport was impeded by uplift, triggering Cool Mode conditions more widely. This extreme climate-mode transition provides a counter-example to other Mesozoic transitions linked to quantitative change in atmospheric greenhouse gas content.

In post-Cambrian time, life on Earth experienced 5 major extinction events, likely instigated by adverse environmental conditions. Biodiversity loss among marine taxa, for at least 3 of these mass extinction events (Late Devonian, end-Permian and end-Triassic), has been connected with widespread oxygen-depleted and sulfide-bearing marine water. Furthermore, geochemical and sedimentary evidence suggest that these events correlate with rather abrupt climate warming and possibly increased terrestrial weathering. This suggests that biodiversity loss may be triggered by mechanisms intrinsic to the Earth system, notably, the biogeochemical sulfur and carbon cycle. This climate warming feedback produces large-scale eutrophication on the continental shelf, which, in turn, expands oxygen minimum zones by increased respiration, which can turn to a sulfidic state by increased microbial-sulfate reduction due to increased availability of organic matter. A plankton community turnover from a high-diversity eukaryote to high-biomass bacterial dominated food web is the catalyst proposed in this anoxia-extinction scenario and stands in stark contrast to the postulated productivity collapse suggested for the end-Cretaceous mass extinction. This cascade of events is relevant for the future ocean under predicted greenhouse driven climate change. The exacerbation of anoxic "dead" zones is already progressing in modern oceanic environments, and this is likely to increase due to climate induced continental weathering and resulting eutrophication of the oceans.

The end-Permian mass extinction, the most severe biotic crisis in the Phanerozoic, was accompanied by climate change and expansion of oceanic anoxic zones. The partitioning of sulfur among different exogenic reservoirs by biological and physical processes was of importance for this biodiversity crisis, but the exact role of bioessential sulfur in the mass extinction is still unclear. Here we show that globally increased production of organic matter affected the seawater sulfate sulfur and oxygen isotope signature that has been recorded in carbonate rock spanning the Permian-Triassic boundary. A bifurcating temporal trend is observed for the strata spanning the marine mass extinction with carbonate-associated sulfate sulfur and oxygen isotope excursions toward decreased and increased values, respectively. By coupling these results to a box model, we show that increased marine productivity and successive enhanced microbial sulfate reduction is the most likely scenario to explain these temporal trends. The new data demonstrate that worldwide expansion of euxinic and anoxic zones are symptoms of increased biological carbon recycling in the marine realm initiated by global warming. The spatial distribution of sulfidic water column conditions in shallow seafloor environments is dictated by the severity and geographic patterns of nutrient fluxes and serves as an adequate model to explain the scale of the marine biodiversity crisis. Our results provide evidence that the major biodiversity crises in Earth's history do not necessarily implicate an ocean stripped of (most) life but rather the demise of certain eukaryotic organisms, leading to a decline in species richness.

Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) is a widely used flame retardant. Despite the presence of TBBPA in gestational tissues and the importance of proper regulation of inflammatory networks for successful pregnancy, there is no prior study on the effects of TBBPA on inflammatory responses in gestational tissues. The present study aimed to investigate TBBPA activation of inflammatory pathways, specifically cytokine and prostaglandin production, in the human first trimester placental cell line HTR-8/SVneo. TBBPA enhanced release of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and suppressed TGF-β release in HTR-8/SVneo cells. The lowest effective concentration was 10 μM TBBPA. A commercial immune response PCR array revealed increased expression of genes involved in inflammatory pathways stimulated by TBBPA in HTR-8/SVneo cells. Because proper regulation of inflammatory mediators in the gestational compartment is necessary for normal placental development and successful pregnancy, further investigation on the impact of TBBPA-stimulated responses on trophoblast function is warranted., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Background: Advances in robotics have made teleoperated surgical procedures a feasible means of treating patients in remote locations. In this study a suite of experiments was performed to investigate the influence of time-delay on teleoperation accuracy and efficiency during a path-following task., Materials and Methods: Subjects used a Phantom Omni 6-degrees of freedom (dof) input device (Sensable, Triangle Park, NC) to move the end-effector of a Mitsubishi (Tokyo, Japan) PA-10 7-dof robotic manipulator along a prescribed path. End-effector motion was recorded using a video motion capture system. Time-delays ranging from 0 to 2.5 s were artificially imposed. Performance was quantified by time to complete the task, path length, and square root-mean-square (RMS) error. Randomization of time-delay order and allowance for practice runs reduced the learning effect. An imposed time limit and pacing were used to negate the move-and-pause strategy that emerged in early trials., Results: Time to complete the task and RMS error generally increased with increasing time-delay. Path length also generally increased, but not as consistently. With imposed pacing, RMS error continued to increase beyond 1.5 s, and some subjects were not able to complete the task in the allotted 90 s., Conclusions: The results suggest a threshold of time-delay in the range of 1.5-2.0 s. Beyond 1.5 s, subjects adopted a move-and-pause strategy that increased completion time to preserve path-tracking accuracy. If paced, tracking accuracy tended to degrade substantially beyond 1.5 s. A strong learning effect was evident, and experienced teleoperators performed substantially better than novices.

A phenomenological and analytical model for the influence of strain effects on atomic transport in columnar thin films is presented. A model system consisting of two types of crystalline thin films with coherent interfaces is assumed. Biaxial mechanical strain ε0 is caused by lattice misfit of the two phases. The conjoined films consist of columnar crystallites with a small diameter l. Strain relaxation by local elastic deformation, parallel to the hetero-interface, is possible along the columnar grain boundaries. The spatial extent δ0 of the strained hetero-interface regions can be calculated, assuming an exponential decay of the deformation-forces. The effect of the strain field on the local ionic transport in a thin film is then calculated by using the thermodynamic relation between (isostatic) pressure and free activation enthalpy ΔG(#). An expression describing the total ionic transport relative to bulk transport of a thin film or a multilayer as a function of the layer thickness is obtained as an integral average over strained and unstrained regions. The expression depends only on known material constants such as Young modulus Y, Poisson ratio ν and activation volume ΔV(#), which can be combined as dimensionless parameters. The model is successfully used to describe own experimental data from conductivity and diffusion studies. In the second part of the paper a comprehensive literature overview of experimental studies on (fast) ion transport in thin films and multilayers along solid-solid hetero-interfaces is presented. By comparing and reviewing the data the observed interface effects can be classified into three groups: (i) transport along interfaces between extrinsic ionic conductors (and insulator), (ii) transport along an open surface of an extrinsic ionic conductor and (iii) transport along interfaces between intrinsic ionic conductors. The observed effects in these groups differ by about five orders of magnitude in a very consistent way. The modified interface transport in group (i) is most probably caused by strain effects, misfit dislocations or disordered transition regions.

The Toarcian oceanic anoxic event (T-OAE; ∼ 183 million y ago) is possibly the most extreme episode of widespread ocean oxygen deficiency in the Phanerozoic, coinciding with rapid atmospheric pCO2 increase and significant loss of biodiversity in marine faunas. The event is a unique past tipping point in the Earth system, where rapid and massive release of isotopically light carbon led to a major perturbation in the global carbon cycle as recorded in organic and inorganic C isotope records. Modern marine ecosystems are projected to experience major loss in biodiversity in response to enhanced ocean anoxia driven by anthropogenic release of greenhouse gases. Potential consequences of this anthropogenic forcing can be approximated by studying analog environmental perturbations in the past such as the T-OAE. Here we present to our knowledge the first organic carbon isotope record derived from the organic matrix in the calcite rostra of early Toarcian belemnites. We combine both organic and calcite carbon isotope analyses of individual specimens of these marine predators to obtain a refined reconstruction of the early Toarcian global exogenic carbon cycle perturbation and belemnite paleoecology. The organic carbon isotope data combined with measurements of oxygen isotope values from the same specimens allow for a more robust interpretation of the interplay between the global carbon cycle perturbation, environmental change, and biotic response during the T-OAE. We infer that belemnites adapted to environmental change by shifting their habitat from cold bottom waters to warm surface waters in response to expanded seafloor anoxia.

The oxygen tracer diffusion coefficient describing transport along nano-/microscaled YSZ/Sc 2 O 3 multilayers as a function of the thick-ness of the ion-conducting YSZ layers has been measured by isotope exchange depth profiling (IEDP), using secondary ion mass spec-trometry (SIMS). The multilayer samples were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on (0001) Al 2 O 3 single crystalline substrates. The values for the oxygen tracer diffusion coefficient were analyzed as a combination of contributions from bulk and interface contributions and compared with results from YSZ/Y 2 O 3 -multilayers with similar microstructure. Using the Nernst-Einstein equation as the relation between diffusivity and electrical conductivity we find very good agreement between conductivity and diffusion data, and we exclude substantial electronic conductivity in the multilayers. The effect of hetero-interface transport can be well explained by a simple interface strain model. As the multilayer samples consist of columnar film crystallites with a defined inter-face structure and texture, we also discuss the influence of this particular microstructure on the interfacial strain.

Heterophase boundaries can offer fast transport paths in solid electrolyte materials. In recent studies an enhancement of the ionic conductivity was indeed observed in micro-/nanoscaled Y(2)O(3)-stabilised ZrO(2) (YSZ) composites and hetero multilayers of thin films. As space charge regions can be neglected due to high charger carrier concentrations, we assume that strain and microstructural changes at the heterophase boundaries are responsible for the observed conductivity effects. In order to obtain independent information on the role of heterophase boundaries for fast transport in strained solid electrolytes, systematic measurements of the (18)O-tracer diffusion coefficient in nanoscaled YSZ/Y(2)O(3) multilayers were performed. Multilayer samples were prepared by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) on (0001) Al(2)O(3) substrates and characterised by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (HRSEM) and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS). To separate interface and bulk transport from the total oxygen diffusivity of the multilayer system, the (average) thickness of the YSZ-layers in the multilayers was varied from 45 nm to 12 nm. Upon decreasing the thickness of the YSZ layers, respectively increasing the density of parallel interfaces, the total diffusion coefficient of the multilayer system is increased by a factor of 2 compared to bulk YSZ. The experimental results agree well with formerly published data for ionic conductivity measurements. They also support a negligible contribution of partial electronic conductivity in the multilayer.

Poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (AB-PBI) membranes are investigated by studying the FT-Raman signals due to the benzimidazole ring vibration together with the C-C and C-H out-of- and in-plane ring deformations. By immersion in aqueous ortho-phosphoric acid for different time periods, membranes with various doping degrees, i.e. different molar fractions of acid, are prepared. The chemical-physical interactions between polymer and acid are studied through band shifting and intensity change of diagnostic peaks in the 500-2000 cm(-1) spectral range. The formation of hydrogen bonding networks surrounding the polymer seems to be the main reason for the observed interactions. Only if the AB-PBI polymer is highly doped, the Raman spectra show an additional signal, which can be attributed to the presence of free phosphoric acid molecules in the polymer network. For low and intermediate doping degrees no evidence for free phosphoric acid molecules can be seen in the spectra. The extent of the polymer-phosphoric acid interactions in the doped membrane material is reinvestigated after a period of one month and the stability discussed. Our results provide insight into the role of phosphoric acid as a medium in the conductivity mechanism in polybenzimidazole.

Multilayer samples of the type (YSZ|Sc2O3) × n with layer thicknesses between 8 nm (n=100) and 250 nm (n=5) were prepared on (0001) sapphire substrates by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The samples were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (HRSEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM/HRTEM, SAED (selected-area electron diffraction) and quantitative EELS (electron energy-loss spectroscopy)). The polycrystalline layers show a columnar microstructure, which is typical for the used preparation technique. The layers are highly textured and only one axial orientation relation is found between yttria-stabilised zirconia (YSZ), scandium oxide and the substrate: (0001) Al2O3‖(111) Sc2O3‖(111) YSZ. A preferred orientation relationship also exists for the azimuthal rotation of the crystallites, which was demonstrated by SAED, XRD pole figure measurements and fast Fourier transformation (FFT) of HRTEM micrographs. The interfaces between YSZ, Sc2O3 and the substrate are sharp and do not contain diffuse transition regions. Dislocations appear not to be arranged in regular arrays. With increasing interface density (thinner individual layers in the multilayer), the conductivity of the multilayers decreases. We relate this to the negative nominal misfit present at the YSZ|Sc2O3 interfaces (compressive stress in YSZ at the phase boundaries). This observation agrees well with the previously investigated case of YSZ|Y2O3 (A. Peters et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2008, 10, 4623), where tensile misfit strain was present in YSZ at the phase boundaries, leading to a conductivity increase.

Ionic transport in solids parallel to grain or phase boundaries is usually strongly enhanced compared to the bulk. Transport perpendicular to an interface (across an interface) is often much slower. Therefore in modern micro- and nanoscaled devices, a severe influence on the ionic/atomic transport properties can be expected due to the high density of interfaces.Transport processes in boundaries of ionic materials are still not understood on an atomic scale. In most of the studies on ionic materials the interfacial transport properties are explained by the influence of space charge regions. Here we discuss the influence of interfacial strain at semicoherent or coherent heterophase boundaries on ionic transport along these interfaces in ionic materials. A qualitative model is introduced for (untilted and untwisted) hetero phase boundaries. For experimental verification, the interfacial oxygen ionic conductivity of different multilayer systems consisting of cubic ZrO(2) stabilised by aliovalent dopands (YSZ, CSZ) and an insulating oxide is investigated as a function of structural mismatch. Recent results on extremely fast ionic conduction in YSZ/SrTiO(3) thin film systems ("colossal ionic concuctivity at interfaces") is discussed from the viewpoint of strain effects.

Abstract: Internal and external interfaces in solids exhibit completely different transport properties compared to the bulk. Transport parallel to grain or phase boundaries is usually strongly enhanced. Transport perpendicular to an interface is usually blocked, i.e., transport across an interface is often much slower. Due to the high density of interfaces in modern micro- and nanoscaled devices, a severe influence on the total transport properties can be expected. In contrast to diffusion in metal grain boundaries, transport phenomena in boundaries of ionic materials are still less understood. The specific transport properties along metal grain boundaries are explained by structural factors like packing densities or dislocation densities in the interface region. In most studies dealing with ionic materials, the interfacial transport properties are merely explained by the influence of space charge regions. In this study the influence of the interface structure on the interfacial transport properties of ionic materials is discussed in analogy to metallic materials. A qualitative model based on the density of misfit dislocations and on interfacial strain is introduced for (untilted and untwisted) phase boundaries. For experimental verification, the interfacial ionic conductivity of different multilayer systems consisting of stabilised ZrO 2 and an insulating oxide is investigated as a funtion of structural mismatch. As predicted by the model, the interfacial conductivity increases when the lattice mismatch is increased.

The oxygen ion conductivity of YSZ (ZrO(2) + 9.5 mol% Y(2)O(3))/Y(2)O(3) multilayer systems is measured parallel to the interfaces as a function of temperature between 350 and 700 degrees C. The multilayer samples are prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The film thicknesses, the crystallinity, the texture and the microstructure are investigated by SEM, XRD, HRTEM and SAED. To separate the interface contribution of the total conductivity from the bulk contribution the thickness of the YSZ and Y(2)O(3) layers is varied systematically. The total conductivity of the YSZ films increases when their thickness is decreased from 0.53 microm to 24 nm. It depends linearly on the reciprocal thickness of the individual layers, thus on the number of YSZ/Y(2)O(3) interfaces. This behaviour results from the parallel connection between individual conduction paths in the bulk and the interfacial regions. The activation energy for the ionic conductivity decreases from 1.13 to 0.99 kJ mol(-1) by decreasing the thicknesses of the individual YSZ layers. HRTEM studies show that the YSZ/Y(2)O(3) interfaces are semicoherent. The correlation between interface structure and ionic conduction is discussed.

Objective: To evaluate adrenocortical function in ill preterm infants and investigate potential relationships between plasma cortisol concentrations and major neonatal outcomes., Study Design: Randomized trial of adrenocorticotropic hormone (1-24ACTH) stimulation testing, followed by a chart review., Setting: Two level III neonatal intensive care units, Sacramento, Calif., Participants: Sixty-seven very low birth weight infants, born at 32 weeks of gestation or earlier weighing 1500 gm or less, who had endotracheal intubation and indwelling arterial access., Results: Most infants (76%) had baseline cortisol concentrations < 414 nmol/L (15.0 micrograms/dl), and of those, only 36% responded to stimulation with 1-24ACTH, 0.1 microgram/kg. Raising the 1-24ACTH dose to 0.2 microgram/kg resulted in a response rate of 67% (p = 0.09) but decreased the sensitivity of the test. An elevated mean 11-deoxycortisol/cortisol ratio indicated that decreased 11 beta-hydroxylase activity may limit cortisol production in some infants. Infants with baseline cortisol concentrations less than 414 nmol/L (15.0 micrograms/dl) were more likely to have chronic lung disease (p < 0.002) and less likely to have severe intraventricular hemorrhage (p < 0.02). Response to 1-24ACTH was not associated with a detectable difference in outcome., Conclusion: Many very low birth weight infants have low cortisol and ACTH concentrations and are unable to mount a cortisol response to physiologic doses (0.1 microgram/kg) of 1-24ACTH. These findings suggest that delayed maturation of adrenal response may result in physiologically inadequate cortisol concentrations in stressed very low birth weight infants. This delayed maturation may contribute to the development of chronic lung disease.

A study of 100 elderly people was carried out to compare the predictions of well-being derived from the confidant model with those derived from the Weiss model. The confidant model predicts that the most important feature of a person's social network for the well-being of that person is whether or not the person has a confidant. The Weiss model states that different persons are needed to fulfill the different needs of the person and in particular that a confidant is important to the need for intimacy and emotional security while a peer group of social friends is needed to fulfill sociability and identity needs. The two models were evaluated by comparing the relative influence of the confidant variable with the peer group variable on subject's well-being. Regression analysis was carried out on the well-being measure using as predictor variables the confidant variable, peer group variable, age, health, and financial status. The confidant and peer group variables were of equal importance to well-being, thus confirming the Weiss model.

The Sunshine Visitors program is an experimental, friendly visitor-type program that trains volunteers to function as network builders with their isolated, elderly visitees, working to strengthen their social support networks. A unique training program was developed and some success with this type of visiting was achieved, particularly with regard to meeting relational needs. The volunteers, though, tended to encourage network building rather than getting directly involved with the client's social network.

Potential for genetic damage in future generations from such widely used hormonic herbicide as 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) is of serious concern. Yet the data, particularly on mammalian systems, continue to be inadequate and inconclusive. An attempt was made in this study to determine the clastogenic and mutagenic potential of 2,4-D in cultured lymphocytes. Chromosome damage though statistically insignificant occurred at dosages as low as 0.2 microgram/ml. Chromosome damage was increased at a statistically significant level whenever the concentration was 50 microgram/ml or higher. Mutagenicity, based on rates of increase in sister chromatid exchanges, was significant at 10 micrograms/ml of higher concentrations. Statistical testing was based o analysis of variance, Dunnett's multiple comparison tests and linear regressions. It seems imperative therefore to avoid indiscriminate use of 2,4-D, and to test the compound for long-range low-level exposures.
