We report experimental test-beam results on dielectric-loaded waveguide detectors that utilize microwave Cherenkov signals to time and characterize high energy particle showers. These results are used to validate models and produce high-fidelity simulations of timing plane systems that yield picosecond time tags and millimeter-level spatial coordinates for the shower centroid. These timing planes, based on the Askaryan effect in solid dielectrics, are most effective at the high center-of-momentum energies planned for the Future Circular Collider (FCC-hh). They will be of particular interest in the forward region due to their high radiation immunity. We use our beam test results and geant4 simulations to validate a hybrid microwave detector model, which is used to simulate a reference timing plane design for the FCC forward calorimeters. Our results indicate that 0.5–3 ps particle timing is possible for a wide range of collision products in the reference FCC hadron collider detector, even with current technology.

Se analiza el efecto del incremento de actividad física (AF) para conseguir el cumplimiento de recomendaciones de AF para la mejora de la salud según la Organización Mundial de la Salud en un grupo de 42 adolescentes (28 chicas) con sobrepeso/obesidad (IMC=29.37±4.5 Kg/m²). El tratamiento de 12 semanas de duración consistió en la prescripción y seguimiento de AF en dos fases: intensiva (seguimiento semanal) y extensiva (seguimiento quincenal). Abstract Riparian environments are highly dynamic ecosystems that support biodiversity and numerous services and that are conditioned by anthropogenic activities and climate change. In this work, we propose an integrated methodology that combines different research approaches—field studies and numerical and analytical modeling—in order to calibrate an ecohydrological stochastic model for riparian vegetation. The model yields vegetation biomass statistics and requires hydrological, topographical, and biological data as input. The biological parameters, namely, the carrying capacity and the flood‐related decay rate, are the target of the calibration as they are related to intrinsic features of vegetation and site‐specific environmental conditions. The calibration is here performed for two bars located within the riparian zone of the Cinca River (Spain). According to our results, the flood‐related decay rate has a spatial dependence that reflects the zonation of different plant species over the study site. The carrying capacity depends on the depth of the phreatic surface, and it is adequately described by a right‐skewed curve. The calibrated model well reproduces the actual biogeography of the Cinca riparian zone. The overall percentage absolute difference between the real and the computed biomass amounts to 9.3% and 3.3% for the two bars. The model is further used to predict the future evolution of riparian vegetation in a climate‐change scenario. The results show that the change of hydrological regime forecast by future climate projections may induce dramatic reduction of vegetation biomass and strongly modify the Cinca riparian biogeography.

The selective hydrogenation of crotonaldehyde in liquid phase, at a temperature of 353 K and a H2pressure of 400 kPa, is studied over different palladium- and platinum-based catalysts (Pd−Pb/α-Al2O3, Pd−Zn/α-Al2O3, Pd/ZnO, and two Pt/ZnO samples, prepared from Pt(NH3)4(NO3)2and H2PtCl6, respectively). The intrinsic selectivity of palladium cannot be modified by alloying or following a promotion with a second metal, and the selectivity to crotyl alcohol measured over palladium-based samples is nil or extremely low. The selectivity corresponding to the Pt/ZnO catalysts increases with the time-on-stream reaching high levels. The formation of a Pt−Zn alloy is the origin of the enhanced selectivity toward crotyl alcohol; this effect is more pronounced for the sample that has been prepared from H2PtCl6. Tropical dry forests (TDFs) are ecosystems with long drought periods, a mean temperature of 25 °C, a mean annual precipitation that ranges from 900 to 2000 mm, and that possess a high abundance of deciduous species (trees and lianas). What remains of the original extent of TDFs in the Americas remains highly fragmented and at different levels of ecological succession. It is estimated that one of the main fingerprints left by global environmental and climate change in tropical environments is an increase in liana coverage. Lianas are non-structural elements of the forest canopy that eventually kill their host trees. In this paper we evaluate the use of a terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) in combination with hemispherical photographs (HPs) to characterize changes in forest structure as a function of ecological succession and liana abundance. We deployed a TLS and HP system in 28 plots throughout secondary forests of different ages and with different levels of liana abundance. Using a canonical correlation analysis (CCA), we addressed how the VEGNET, a terrestrial laser scanner, and HPs could predict TDF structure. Likewise, using univariate analyses of correlations, we show how the liana abundance could affect the prediction of the forest structure. Our results suggest that TLSs and HPs can predict the differences in the forest structure at different successional stages but that these differences disappear as liana abundance increases. Therefore, in well known ecosystems such as the tropical dry forest of Costa Rica, these biases of prediction could be considered as structural effects of liana presence. This research contributes to the understanding of the potential effects of lianas in secondary dry forests and highlights the role of TLSs combined with HPs in monitoring structural changes in secondary TDFs.

In the reviewed articles, quinpirole is used as a dopamine D2 and D3 receptor agonist to induce persistent behaviour in animal models. Dopamine has been related to perseverative behaviour. The perseverative behaviour was observed in an open field with objects of different shapes and sizes. The main structures studied with this methodology are the orbitofrontal cortex, striatum, thalamus, basolateral amygdala and nucleus accumbens. The animal models studied comply with the face, predictive and construct validity.

In the deep part of the Sea of Marmara (Turkey), the sedimentation developing upon the North Anatolian Fault is strongly influenced by the associated seismic activity, through gravity reworking (fluidized landslides) and tsunamis. Specific layers (homogenites + turbidites, HmTu), representing individual sedimentary events, have been characterized along three giant piston cores retrieved from the Çinarcik and Central (or Orta) basins. Pre-Holocene, nonmarine sediments, were analyzed, representing the last 12–17 kyr BP (before present). For a 2 kyr long interval, 11 events could be precisely correlated on both sides of the Central Basin's southwestern scarp. For each of them, based on the specific depositional process, the thickness difference between the two sites was considered as a direct estimation of the vertical component of a coeval coseismic offset. The homogenite (upper) component accounts for the major part of the thickness difference (ranging from 36 to 144 cm). These offsets were considered as likely representing dominantly vertical throws, along the transtensional southwestern boundary of the inner, pull-apart Central Basin. In terms of natural hazards, further investigations on this local behavior should rather be directed to tsunami genesis.

Objective: To describe the results of the home enteral nutrition (HEN) registry of the NADYA-SENPE group in 2011 and 2012. Material and methods: We retrieved the data of the patients recorded from January 1st 2011 to December 31st 2012. Results: There were 3021 patients in the registry during the period from 29 hospitals, which gives 65.39 per million inhabitants. 97.95% were adults, 51.4% male. Mean age was 67.64 ± 19.1, median age was 72 years for adults and 7 months for children. Median duration with HEN was 351 days and for 97.5% was their first event with HEN. Most patients had HEN because of neurological disease (57.8%). Access route was nasogastric tube for 43.5% and gastrostomy for 33.5%. Most patients had limited activity level and, concerning autonomy, 54.8% needed total help. Nutritional formula was supplied from chemist's office to 73.8% of patients and disposables, when necessary, was supplied from hospitals to 53.8% of patients. HEN was finished for 1,031 patients (34.1%) during the period of study, 56.6% due to decease and 22.2% due to recovery of oral intake. Conclusions: Data from NADYA-SENPE registry must be explained cautiously because it is a non-compulsory registry. In spite of the change in the methodology of the registry in 2010, tendencies regarding HEN have been maintained, other than oral route.

Objetivo: Comunicar los datos del registro de Nutrición Parenteral Domiciliaria (NPD) del grupo de trabajo NADYA-SENPE de los años 2011 y 2012. Material y métodos: Recopilación de los datos del registro "on-line" introducidos por los colaboradores del grupo NADYA responsables del seguimiento de la NPD desde el 1 de enero de 2011 al 31 de diciembre de 2012 dividido por años naturales. Resultados: Año 2010: Se registraron 184 pacientes, procedentes de 29 hospitales, lo que representa una tasa de 3,98 pacientes/millón habitantes/año 2011, con 186 episodios de NPD. Durante el año 2012 se registraron 203 pacientes, procedentes de 29 hospitales, lo que representa una tasa de 4,39 pacientes/millón habitantes/año 2012, con un total de 211 episodios de NPD. Conclusiones: Se observa un aumento progresivo de los pacientes registrados respecto a años anteriores. El principal grupo patológico sigue siendo oncológico ocupando el primer lugar desde 2003. Aunque el registro NADYA es un registro consolidado y ha sido y es fuente imprescindible de información relevante para el conocimiento de los avances de la Nutrición Artificial Domiciliaria en nuestro país, queda un amplio margen para la mejora. En especial lo que hace referencia al registro de pacientes pediátricos y al registro de las complicaciones.

La obesidad mórbida es una enfermedad crónica con prevalencia creciente y que asocia una importante morbimortalidad. La cirugía bariátrica es el tratamiento más eficaz para conseguir una reducción ponderal mantenida en el tiempo y una disminución en las tasas de complicaciones asociadas a la obesidad. El sobrepeso y la obesidad son factores de riesgo para el déficit de varios micronutrientes como las vitaminas B1, B6, C, ácido fólico y D, minerales como el hierro y oligoelementos como el zinc, en general por déficit dietético. A pesar de ello, por el momento no existe un consenso acerca de la monitorización de micronutrientes en el preoperatorio, aunque parece razonable a la vista de su considerable prevalencia. La cirugía bariátrica puede provocar déficit de micronutrientes o intensificar deficiencias previas, tanto por limitación de la ingesta como por la maldigestión y malabsorción en las técnicas malabsortivas, siendo el riesgo paralelo a la pérdida ponderal. Es preciso monitorizar de por vida los diferentes micronutrientes, sobre todo tras las técnicas quirúrgicas malabsortivas. Se recomienda el uso de un complejo polivitamínico de forma sistemática y en los casos en los que sea insuficiente, será preciso emplear suplementación específica.The morbid obesity is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence and that associates an important morbility and mortality. The bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment to secure a weight reduction maintained in the time and a diminution in the rates of complications associated to the obesity. The overweight and the obesity are risk factors for the deficit of several micronutrients like vitamins B1, B6, C, folic acid and D, minerals like the iron and trace elements like zinc, generally by dietetic deficit. In spite of it, at the moment a consensus don´t exist about the monitoring of micronutrients in the preoperative one, although it seems reasonable in view of his considerable prevalence. The bariatric surgery can bring about deficit of micronutrients or to intensify previous deficiencies, as much by limitation of the ingestion like by the maldigestión and malabsorption in the malabsortives techniques, being the parallel risk to the ponderal loss. It is precise to monitor of by life the different micronutrients, mainly after the malabsortives surgical techniques. The use of a polivitamínic complex of systematic form is recommended and in the cases in which he is insufficient, it will be precise to use specific suplementación.

Background: Dietary treatment for obese adolescents should aim to ensure adequate growth and development, by reducing excessive fat mass accumulation, avoiding loss of lean body mass, improving well-being and self-esteem and preventing cyclical weight regain. The aim of this article is to describe the dietary intervention design and the methods used to evaluate nutritional knowledge and behavior in the EVASYON study (Development, implementation and evaluation of the efficacy of a therapeutic programme for overweight/obese adolescents). Methods/design: EVASYON is a multi-centre study conducted in 5 Spanish hospital settings (Granada, Madrid, Pamplona, Santander and Zaragoza), where 204 overweight/obese Spanish adolescents were treated in groups of 9 to 11 subjects over 20 visits. The study was implemented in two stages: an intensive, calorie-restricted period for the first 9 weeks, and an extensive body-weight follow-up period for the last 11 months. A moderate energy intake restriction was applied in the intensive period according to the degree of obesity, on the basis of a balanced diet supplying 50-55% of daily energy as carbohydrates; 30-35% as fats and 10-15% as proteins. In the intensive period, adolescents were prescribed both a fixed full-day meal plan for the first three weeks and a full day meal plan with different food-choices for 6 weeks. Later, adolescents received a flexible meal plan based on food exchanges for the follow-up period until the end of the trial. Data on food intake, dietary and meal-related habits and behavior were collected by means of dietary questionnaires. To analyse nutritional knowledge, adolescents were examined regarding nutrient concepts and food adoitems for a healthy diet with the appropriate tools. Participants were given nutritional information with complementary teaching material, which was available on the EVASYON website (www.estudioevasyon.com). Discussion: The dietary intervention of the EVASYON programme with a moderate calorie restriction for a limited period of time could be a good strategy in treating overweight and obese adolescents and that will be tested further. Moreover, combining fixed plan with free-choice menus may help adolescents and their families to make right decisions for every day meals.Antecedentes: El tratamiento dietético para los adolescentes obesos debería asegurar el crecimiento y desarrollo adecuados al reducir la acumulación excesiva de masa grasa, evitar la pérdida de masa magra corporal, mejorar el bienestar y la autoestima y prevenir la ganancia cíclica de peso. El objetivo de este artículo es el de describir el diseño de la intervención dietética y los métodos empleados para evaluar el conocimiento y la conducta nutricionales del estudio EVASYON (Desarrollo, implantación y evaluación de la eficacia de un programa terapéutico para adolescentes con sobrepeso/obesidad). Métodos/diseño: EVASYON es un estudio multicéntrico realizado en 5 hospitales españoles (Granada, Madrid, Pamplona, Santander y Zaragoza), en el que se trató a 204 adolescentes españoles con sobrepeso/obesidad en grupos de 9 a 11 individuos a lo largo de 20 visitas. El estudio se implantó en dos etapas: un período intensivo de restricción calórica durante las 9 primeras visitas y un período extensivo de seguimiento del peso corporal durante los últimos 11 meses. Se aplicó una restricción moderada de consumo de energía durante el período intensivo en función del grado de obesidad, sobre la base de una dieta equilibrada que aporta el 50-55% de la energía diaria en forma de carbohidratos; 30-35% como grasas y 10-15% como proteínas. En el período intensivo, se prescribió a los adolescentes un régimen de comidas fijo para todo el día durante las 3 primeras semanas y un plan de comidas para todo el día con diferentes opciones durante 6 semanas. Posteriormente, los adolescentes recibieron un régimen de comidas flexible sobre la base de los intercambios de alimentos durante el período de seguimiento hasta el final del ensayo. Se recogieron los datos de consumo de alimentos, dietéticos y hábitos relacionados con las comidas mediante cuestionarios de dieta. Para analizar el conocimiento nutricional, se examinó a los adolescentes con respecto a conceptos de nutrición y alimentos concretos para una dieta sana con las herramientas adecuadas. Se proporcionó a los participantes información nutricional con material educativo complementario que estaba disponible en la página web del estudio (www.estudioevasyon.com). Discusión: La intervención dietética del programa EVASYON con una restricción calórica moderada durante un período de tiempo limitado podría ser una buena estrategia para el tratamiento de los adolescentes con sobrepeso y obesidad y se probará más adelante. Además, el combinar el plan fijo con menús de elección libre podría ayudar a los adolescentes y sus familias a tomar las decisiones correctas para las comidas de todos los días.
