Bone and joint infections represent a potentially devastating complication of prosthetic orthopedic joint replacement, thus requiring both rapid and appropriate antibiotic treatment. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens involved in this pathology. Being able to assert its presence is the first step of efficient patient management. This monocenter study evaluated the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assay for the molecular detection of S. aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in bone and joint biopsy specimens and synovial fluids. This test, together with conventional techniques, including standard cultures and the 16S rRNA amplification assay, was performed on 208 successive perioperative samples collected prospectively for 1 year obtained from 129 patients. Using conventional techniques, we detected a microbial pathogen in 76 samples from 58 patients, 40 of which were identified as S. aureus. The limit of detection (LOD) of the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assay was experimentally determined for bone and joint biopsy specimens and synovial fluids using negative samples spiked with S. aureus ATCC 43300. The sensitivities of S. aureus detection with the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assay were 82.5% (33/40 samples) and 97.5% (39/40 samples) using the manufacturer's LOD and an experimentally determined LOD, respectively. Interestingly, using the osteoarticular specific LOD, 15 additional samples were determined to be positive for S. aureus DNA with the MRSA/SA ELITe MGB assay; in all cases, these samples were obtained from patients considered to be infected with S. aureus according to their clinical and microbiological records. The results were available within 24 h, which could help to expedite therapeutic decisions.

Leptospirosis is endemic in New Caledonia. Clinical diagnosis is often difficult and its evolution can be fatal. Leptospirosis requires specific management before biological confirmation. Modified Faine criteria (Faine Score) have been suggested to diagnose leptospirosis on epidemiological (parts A and B) and biological (part C) criteria. The main objective of our study was to assess the relevance of the epidemiological-clinical modified Faine score, parts A and B (MF A + B), in patients with suspected leptospirosis in New Caledonia. A monocentric case-control study was conducted in suspect patients for whom a Leptospira polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test was done within the first 7 days of signs onset at the tertiary hospital from January 2018 to January 2019. Cases and control subjects were matched 1:2 in the gender and age categories. Bivariate, and then multivariable, analyses studied the association between the MF A + B score and a positive Leptospira PCR test, adjusted on the variables retained. In all, 35 cases and 70 control subjects matched for age and gender were analyzed. Multivariable analysis by logistic regression found a significant association between an MF A + B score taken from the categories "possible leptospirosis" (score, 20-25) and "presumed leptospirosis" (score, > 26), and the case or control subject status (P < 0.0001). Model performance was high, with an area under the curve value of 99.27%, 93.55% sensitivity, and 96.36% specificity, which classified subjects correctly in 95.35% of cases. Our study suggests using the MF A + B score to identify possible cases of leptospirosis and initiate antibiotic therapy before biological confirmation in New Caledonia. This score should be evaluated in areas where more differential diagnoses exist and where PCR is not widely available.

Structural defects are ubiquitous for polycrystalline perovskite films, compromising device performance and stability. Herein, a universal method is developed to overcome this issue by incorporating halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) into perovskite polycrystalline films. CsPbBr 3 QDs are deposited on four types of halide perovskite films (CsPbBr 3 , CsPbIBr 2 , CsPbBrI 2 , and MAPbI 3 ) and the interactions are triggered by annealing. The ions in the CsPbBr 3 QDs are released into the thin films to passivate defects, and concurrently the hydrophobic ligands of QDs self-assemble on the film surfaces and grain boundaries to reduce the defect density and enhance the film stability. For all QD-treated films, PL emission intensity and carrier lifetime are significantly improved, and surface morphology and composition uniformity are also optimized. Furthermore, after the QD treatment, light-induced phase segregation and degradation in mixed-halide perovskite films are suppressed, and the efficiency of mixed-halide CsPbIBr 2 solar cells is remarkably improved to over 11% from 8.7%. Interfacial thermal transport plays a prominent role in the thermal management of nanoscale objects and is of fundamental importance for basic research and nanodevices. At metal/insulator interfaces, a configuration commonly found in electronic devices, heat transport strongly depends upon the effective energy transfer from thermalized electrons in the metal to the phonons in the insulator. However, the mechanism of interfacial electron-phonon coupling and thermal transport at metal/insulator interfaces is not well understood. Here, the observation of a substantial enhancement of the interfacial thermal resistance and the important role of surface charges at the metal/ferroelectric interface in an Al/BiFeO 3 membrane are reported. By applying uniaxial strain, the interfacial thermal resistance can be varied substantially (up to an order of magnitude), which is attributed to the renormalized interfacial electron-phonon coupling caused by the charge redistribution at the interface due to the polarization rotation. These results imply that surface charges at a metal/insulator interface can substantially enhance the interfacial electron-phonon-mediated thermal coupling, providing a new route to optimize the thermal transport performance in next-generation nanodevices, power electronics, and thermal logic devices., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Metal oxide pseudocapacitors are limited by low electrical and ionic conductivities. The present work integrates defect engineering and architectural design to exhibit, for the first time, intercalation pseudocapacitance in CeO 2- x . An engineered chronoamperometric electrochemical deposition is used to synthesize 2D CeO 2- x nanoflakes as thin as ∼12 nm. Through simultaneous regulation of intrinsic and extrinsic defect concentrations, charge transfer and charge-discharge kinetics with redox and intercalation capacitances together are optimized, where reduction increases the gravimetric capacitance by 77% to 583 F g -1 , exceeding the theoretical capacitance (562 F g -1 ). Mo ion implantation and reduction processes increase the specific capacitance by 133%, while the capacitance retention increases from 89 to 95%. The role of ion-implanted Mo 6+ is critical through its interstitial solid solubility, which is not to alter the energy band diagram but to facilitate the generation of electrons and to establish the midgap states for color centers, which facilitate electron transfer across the band gap, thus enhancing n-type semiconductivity. Critically, density functional theory simulations reveal, for the first time, that the reduction causes the formation of ordered oxygen vacancies that provide an atomic channel for ion intercalation. These channels enable intercalation pseudocapacitance but also increase electrical and ionic conductivities. In addition, the associated increased active site density enhances the redox such that the 10% of the Ce 3+ available for redox (surface only) increases to 35% by oxygen vacancy channels. These findings are critical for any oxide system used for energy storage systems, as they offer both architectural design and structural engineering of materials to maximize the capacitance performance by achieving accumulative surface redox and intercalation-based redox reactions during the charge/discharge process.

Protonated 3d transition-metal oxides often display low electronic conduction, which hampers their application in electric, magnetic, thermoelectric, and catalytic fields. Electronic conduction can be enhanced by co-inserting oxygen acceptors simultaneously. However, the currently used redox approaches hinder protons and oxygen ions co-insertion due to the selective switching issues. Here, a thermal hydration strategy for systematically exploring the synthesis of conductive protonated oxides from 3d transition-metal oxides is introduced. This strategy is illustrated by synthesizing a novel layered-oxide SrCoO 3 H from the brownmillerite SrCoO 2.5 . Compared to the insulating SrCoO 2.5 , SrCoO 3 H exhibits an unprecedented high electronic conductivity above room temperature, water uptake at 250 °C, and a thermoelectric power factor of up to 1.2 mW K -2 m -1 at 300 K. BORRELIOSIS AND RELAPSING feverrelapsing fevers borreliosis (RFB) are caused by bacteria of the genus Borrelia, within the spirochete's family, transmitted to Humans by arthropods (lice Pediculus humanus, soft ticks of the genus Ornithodoros, or hard ticks for one of them). The RFB transmitted by body lice is cosmopolitan and occurs during epidemics in the context of major crises (promiscuity, precarious hygiene conditions, food crises, etc.). RFB transmitted by ticks are distributed by region, according to the Borrelia species and the geographical repartition of the tick involved (sporadic transmission). The incubation period varies from 3 to 20 days. The first febrile phase lasts 3 days (1-14 days), followed by a phase of apyrexia with persistence of other clinical signs (skin rash, petechiae, headaches, agitation, polyarthromyalgia, abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, etc.). The recurrence of fever occurs every 7 days on average. Bacteremia in the blood is abundant during fever allowing direct diagnosis by microscopy, Borrelia PCR or culture on a specific medium when available. Perovskite oxides are regarded as promising electrocatalysts for water splitting due to their cost-effectiveness, high efficiency and durability in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Despite these advantages, a fundamental understanding of how critical structural parameters of perovskite electrocatalysts influence their activity and stability is lacking. Here, we investigate the impact of structural defects on OER performance for representative LaNiO 3 perovskite electrocatalysts. Hydrogen reduction of 700 °C calcined LaNiO 3 induces a high density of surface oxygen vacancies, and confers significantly enhanced OER activity and stability compared to unreduced LaNiO 3 ; the former exhibit a low onset overpotential of 380 mV at 10 mA cm -2 and a small Tafel slope of 70.8 mV dec -1 . Oxygen vacancy formation is accompanied by mixed Ni 2+ /Ni 3+ valence states, which quantum-chemical DFT calculations reveal modify the perovskite electronic structure. A pressure-induced structural phase transition and its intimate link with the superconducting transition was studied for the first time in TiSe 2 up to 40 GPa at room temperature using X-ray diffraction, transport measurement, and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate the occurrence of a first-order structural phase transition at 4 GPa from the standard trigonal structure (S.G. P 3̅ m 1) to another trigonal structure (S-G- P 3̅ c 1). Additionally, at 16 GPa, the P 3̅ c 1 phase spontaneously transforms into a monoclinic C 2/ m phase, and above 24 GPa, the C 2/ m phase returns to the initial P 3̅ m 1 phase. Electrical transport results show that metallization occurs above 6 GPa. The charge density wave observed at ambient pressure is suppressed upon compression up to 2 GPa with the emergence of superconductivity at 2.5 GPa, with a critical temperature ( T c ) of 2 K. A structural transition accompanies the emergence of superconductivity that persists up to 4 GPa. The results demonstrate that the pressure-induced phase transitions explored by the experiments along with the theoretical predictions may open the door to a new path for searching and controlling the phase diagrams of transition metal dichalcogenides.

Background: Hemotropic mycoplasmas, previously classified in the genus Eperythrozoon, have been reported as causing human infections in Brazil, China, Japan, and Spain., Methods: In 2017, we detected DNA from Candidatus Mycoplasma haemohominis in the blood of a Melanesian patient from New Caledonia presenting with febrile splenomegaly, weight loss, life-threatening autoimmune hemolytic anemia, and hemophagocytosis. The full genome of the bacterium was sequenced from a blood isolate. Subsequently, we retrospectively (2011-2017) and prospectively (2018-2019) tested patients who had been hospitalized with a similar clinico-biological picture. In addition, as these patients had been in contact with frugivorous bats (authorized under conditions for hunting and eating in New Caledonia), we investigated the role of these animals and their biting flies by testing them for hemotropic mycoplasmas., Results: There were 15 patients found to be infected by this hemotropic mycoplasma. Among them, 4 (27%) died following splenectomy performed either for spontaneous spleen rupture or to cure refractory autoimmune hemolytic anemia. The bacterium was cultivated from the patient's blood. The full genome of the Neocaledonian Candidatus M. haemohominis strain differed from that of a recently identified Japanese strain. Of 40 tested Pteropus bats, 40% were positive; 100% of collected bat flies Cyclopodia horsfieldi (Nycteribiidae, Diptera) were positive. Disorder-disorder phase transitions are rare in nature. Here, we present a comprehensive low-temperature experimental and theoretical study of the heat capacity and vibrational density of states of 1-fluoro-adamantane (C 10 H 15 F), an intriguing molecular crystal that presents a continuous disorder-disorder phase transition at T = 180 K and a low-temperature tetragonal phase that exhibits fractional fluorine occupancy. It is shown that fluorine occupancy disorder in the low-T phase of 1-fluoro-adamantane gives rise to the appearance of low-temperature glassy features in the corresponding specific heat (i.e., "boson peak" -BP-) and vibrational density of states. We identify the inflation of low-energy optical modes as the main responsible for the appearance of such glassy heat-capacity features and propose a straightforward correlation between the first localized optical mode and maximum BP temperature for disordered molecular crystals (either occupational or orientational). Thus, the present study provides new physical insights into the possible origins of the BP appearing in disordered materials and expands the set of molecular crystals in which "glassy-like" heat-capacity features have been observed., (© 2021. Introduction: Eosinophilic meningitis is a rare form of meningitis with sequelae or death occurring in approximately 2-3% of cases. The most frequent etiological agent is the parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The aim of this study was to characterize New Caledonian cases and to assess the extent to which of A. cantonensis was involved., Material and Methods: We performed a retrospective study of all cases of eosinophilic meningitis (EM) admitted to the Territorial Hospital of New Caledonia, from 2004 to 2019. We performed a descriptive and a multivariate analysis to identify association of variables with severe and fatal cases (or cases with sequelae)., Conclusion: Angiostrongyliasis was confirmed as being responsible for 17 of the 92 reported EM cases in New Caledonia from 2004 to 2019 with most being young adults and non-walking infants, and with two peaks of incidence one during the dry season and one during the rainy season. Background: Most European and American countries recently updated their guidelines on Lyme borreliosis (LB). The aim of this study was to provide a comparative overview of existing guidelines on the treatment of LB in Europe and America and to assess the methodological quality of their elaboration., Methods: A systematic search was carried out in MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and the national databases of scientific societies from 2014 to 2020. Quality was assessed by two independent reviewers using the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) tool., Results: Twelve guidelines were included. The scores for the AGREE II domains (median ± IQR) were: overall assessment 100 ± 22, scope and purpose 85 ± 46, stakeholder involvement 88 ± 48, rigour of development 67 ± 35, clarity of presentation 81 ± 36, applicability 73 ± 52 and editorial independence 79% ± 54%. Cohen's weighted kappa showed a high agreement (K = 0.90, 95%CI 0.84-0.96). Guidelines were quite homogeneous regarding the recommended molecules (mostly doxycycline in the first intention and ceftriaxone in the second intention), their duration (10 to 28 days), and their dosage. The differences were due to the lack of well-conducted comparative trials. The International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS) guidelines were the only ones to suggest longer antibiotics based on an expert consensus., Conclusion: European and American guidelines for the treatment of LB were quite homogeneous but based on moderate- to low-evidence studies. Well-conducted comparative trials are needed to assess the best molecules, the optimal duration and the most effective doses.

Traditional refrigeration technologies based on compression cycles of greenhouse gases pose serious threats to the environment and cannot be downscaled to electronic device dimensions. Solid-state cooling exploits the thermal response of caloric materials to changes in the applied external fields (i.e., magnetic, electric and/or mechanical stress) and represents a promising alternative to current refrigeration methods. However, most of the caloric materials known to date present relatively small adiabatic temperature changes ([Formula: see text] to 10 K) and/or limiting irreversibility issues resulting from significant phase-transition hysteresis. Here, we predict by using molecular dynamics simulations the existence of colossal barocaloric effects induced by pressure (isothermal entropy changes of [Formula: see text] J K[Formula: see text] kg[Formula: see text]) in the energy material Li[Formula: see text]B[Formula: see text]H[Formula: see text]. Specifically, we estimate [Formula: see text] J K[Formula: see text] kg[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] K for a small pressure shift of P = 0.1 GPa at [Formula: see text] K. The disclosed colossal barocaloric effects are originated by a fairly reversible order-disorder phase transformation involving coexistence of Li[Formula: see text] diffusion and (BH)[Formula: see text] reorientational motion at high temperatures.

Epitaxially grown [Formula: see text] (STO) thin films are material enablers for a number of critical energy-conversion and information-storage technologies like electrochemical electrode coatings, solid oxide fuel cells and random access memories. Oxygen vacancies ([Formula: see text]), on the other hand, are key defects to understand and tailor many of the unique functionalities realized in oxide perovskite thin films. Here, we present a comprehensive and technically sound ab initio description of [Formula: see text] in epitaxially strained (001) STO thin films. The novelty of our first-principles study lies in the incorporation of lattice thermal excitations on the formation energy and diffusion properties of [Formula: see text] over wide epitaxial strain conditions ([Formula: see text]%). We found that thermal lattice excitations are necessary to obtain a satisfactory agreement between first-principles calculations and the available experimental data for the formation energy of [Formula: see text]. Furthermore, it is shown that thermal lattice excitations noticeably affect the energy barriers for oxygen ion diffusion, which strongly depend on [Formula: see text] and are significantly reduced (increased) under tensile (compressive) strain. The present work demonstrates that for a realistic theoretical description of oxygen vacancies in STO thin films is necessary to consider lattice thermal excitations, thus going beyond standard zero-temperature ab initio approaches.

Diphosphines displaying azobenzene scaffolds and the corresponding bis-gold chloride complexes have been prepared and fully characterized by photophysical, spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction studies. DFT calculations provide complementary information on their electronic, structural and spectroscopic properties. Comparative investigations have been carried out on compounds featuring phosphorus functions in the meta- and para-positions, respectively, with respect to the azo functions, as well as on diphosphines with an ortho-tetrafluoro substituted azobenzene core. The effects of the substitution patterns on structural and spectroscopic properties are discussed.

Background: In 2017, New Caledonia experienced an outbreak of severe dengue causing high hospital burden (4379 cases, 416 hospital admissions, 15 deaths). We decided to build a local operational model predictive of dengue severity, which was needed to ease the healthcare circuit., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical and biological parameters associated with severe dengue in the cohort of patients hospitalized at the Territorial Hospital between January and July 2017 with confirmed dengue, in order to elaborate a comprehensive patient's score. Patients were compared in univariate and multivariate analyses. Predictive models for severity were built using a descending step-wise method., Results: Out of 383 included patients, 130 (34%) developed severe dengue and 13 (3.4%) died. Major risk factors identified in univariate analysis were: age, comorbidities, presence of at least one alert sign, platelets count < 30 × 10 9 /L, prothrombin time < 60%, AST and/or ALT > 10 N, and previous dengue infection. Severity was not influenced by the infecting dengue serotype nor by previous Zika infection. Two models to predict dengue severity were built according to sex. Best models for females and males had respectively a median Area Under the Curve = 0.80 and 0.88, a sensitivity = 84.5 and 84.5%, a specificity = 78.6 and 95.5%, a positive predictive value = 63.3 and 92.9%, a negative predictive value = 92.8 and 91.3%. Models were secondarily validated on 130 patients hospitalized for dengue in 2018., Conclusion: We built robust and efficient models to calculate a bedside score able to predict dengue severity in our setting. We propose the spreadsheet for dengue severity score calculations to health practitioners facing dengue outbreaks of enhanced severity in order to improve patients' medical management and hospitalization flow.

Background: Infections after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) are rare. No cases of Salmonella infection have been described to our knowledge., Case Summary: We describe a rare case of Salmonella infection in a 23-year-old patient following an ACLR. The patient presented with subacute septic arthritis, 26 d after a hamstring autograft ACLR. The pathogen, Salmonella enterica typhimurium was isolated by bacteriological sampling of the first arthroscopic lavage. Two arthroscopic lavages were required, with intravenous antibiotic therapy for two weeks with cefotaxime and ciprofloxacin, followed by oral antibiotics with amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin for a total duration of three months. This approach treated the infection but two years after the septic arthritis, faced with ongoing knee instability due to graft damage, a revision ACLR with a bone-tendon-bone graft was performed. The architectural design of nanocatalysts plays a critical role in the achievement of high densities of active sites but current technologies are hindered by process complexity and limited scaleability. The present work introduces a rapid, flexible, and template-free method to synthesize three-dimensional (3D), mesoporous, CeO 2-x nanostructures comprised of extremely thin holey two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets of centimetre-scale. The process leverages the controlled conversion of stacked nanosheets of a newly developed Ce-based coordination polymer into a range of stable oxide morphologies controllably differentiated by the oxidation kinetics. The resultant polycrystalline, hybrid, 2D-3D CeO 2-x exhibits high densities of defects and surface area as high as 251 m 2 g -1 , which yield an outstanding CO conversion performance (T 90% = 148 °C) for all oxides. Modification by the creation of heterojunction nanostructures using transition metal oxides (TMOs) results in further improvements in performance (T 90% = 88 °C), which are interpreted in terms of the active sites associated with the TMOs that are identified through structural analyses and density functional theory (DFT) simulations. This unparalleled catalytic performance for CO conversion is possible through the ultra-high surface areas, defect densities, and pore volumes. This technology offers the capacity to establish efficient pathways to engineer nanostructures of advanced functionalities for catalysis.

We measured the specific heat C of normal (C p of normal (C 4 S) and deuterated (C 4 S) and deuterated (C 4 D 4 , K ≤ 25. C T , K ≤ 25. C 4 H 4 and a stable phase V, both with frozen orientational disorder (OD), whereas C 2 and a stable phase V, both with frozen orientational disorder (OD), whereas C 4 D 4 S exhibits a metastable phase II 2 of C 2 of C 4 S and a fully ordered stable phase V. Our measurements demonstrate the existence of a large bump in the heat capacity of both stable and metastable C 4 S and a fully ordered stable phase V. Our measurements demonstrate the existence of a large bump in the heat capacity of both stable and metastable C 4 S and C 4 S and C 4 H 4 S phases at temperatures of ∼10 K, which significantly departs from the expected Debye temperature behavior of C p ≈ T 3 . This case study demonstrates that the identified low-temperature C p anomaly, typically referred to as a "Boson-peak" in the context of glassy crystals, is not exclusive of disordered materials.

Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a rare-and dreaded-complication of arthroplasty requiring multidisciplinary care. Given the dual goal of treating the infection and maintaining satisfactory function, it is preferable to determine how and when the implanted components can be retained. Bacteria and fungi organize themselves into biofilms that shield them from antibiotics and the immune system. This biofilm is in place after 15 days of active infection. Some antibiotics have a better activity on biofilms. The following factors have a negative impact on the probability of a successful debridement, antibiotics and implant retention (DAIR) intervention: fracture or revision, use of cement, bacteremia, kidney and/or liver failure, immunosuppression and elevated CRP. Hematogenous infections have a worse prognosis than early postoperative infections. Using a decision algorithm increases the chances of DAIR being successful. The KLIC score applies to early postoperative infections (<4 weeks postoperative and<3 weeks from the first signs) while the CRIME-80 score applies to hematogenous infections (<3 weeks from the first signs). Arthroscopic treatments have no role here, whereas DAIR through an arthrotomy is well standardized. Wide spectrum antibiotic therapy, secondarily adapted to the causative microorganism, is indicated for a total of 3 months. The results against the infection are mixed, although following a decision algorithm resolves the infection in about 75% of cases. The functional outcomes and quality of life are close to those of patients who have undergone primary joint replacement. It is not recommended to carry out a second DAIR if the first one fails. It is logical to apply the principles set out for the hip and knee to other joint replacements, and to use the same algorithm. For the upper limb, and especially for reverse shoulder arthroplasty, one must be careful about Cutibacterium acnes infections as they are hard to diagnose. Surgeons should not hesitate to contact a referral center for any PJI, although it is preferable that early infections be treated at the facility that performed the implantation., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS. The morphologies of ceria nanocrystals play an essential role in determining their redox and catalytic performances in many applications, yet the effects of synthesis variables on the formation of ceria nanoparticles of different morphologies and their related growth mechanisms have not been systematised. The design of these morphologies is underpinned by a range of fundamental parameters, including crystallography, optical mineralogy, the stabilities of exposed crystallographic planes, CeO 2-x stoichiometry, phase equilibria, thermodynamics, defect equilibria, and the crystal growth mechanisms. These features are formalised and the key analytical methods used for analysing defects, particularly the critical oxygen vacancies, are surveyed, with the aim of providing a source of design parameters for the synthesis of nanocrystals, specifically CeO 2-x . However, the most important aspect in the design of CeO 2-x nanocrystals is an understanding of the roles of the main variables used for synthesis. While there is a substantial body of data on CeO 2-x morphologies fabricated using low cerium concentrations ([Ce]) under different experimental conditions, the present work fully maps the effects of the relevant variables on the resultant CeO 2-x morphologies in terms of the commonly used raw materials [Ce] (and [NO 3 - ] in Ce(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O) as feedstock, [NaOH] as precipitating agent, temperature, and time (as well as the complementary vapour pressure). Through the combination of consideration of the published literature and the generation of key experimental data to fill in the gaps, a complete mechanistic description of the development of the main CeO 2-x morphologies is illustrated. Further, the mechanisms of the conversion of nanochains into the two variants of nanorods, square and hexagonal, have been elucidated through crystallographic reasoning. Other key conclusions for the crystal growth process are the critical roles of (1) the formation of Ce(OH) 4 crystallite nanochains as the precursors of nanorods and (2) the disassembly of the nanorods into Ce(OH) 4 crystallites and NO 3 - -assisted reassembly into nanocubes (and nanospheres) as an unrecognised intermediate stage of crystal growth.

Introduction: Personalised cancer screening aims to improve benefits, reduce harms and being more cost-effective than age-based screening. The objective of the DECIDO study is to assess the acceptability and feasibility of offering risk-based personalised breast cancer screening and its integration in regular clinical practice in a National Health System setting., Methods and Analysis: The study is designed as a single-arm proof-of-concept trial. The study sample will include 385 women aged 40-50 years resident in a primary care health area in Spain. The study intervention consists of (1) a baseline visit; (2) breast cancer risk estimation; (3) a second visit for risk communication and screening recommendations based on breast cancer risk and (4) a follow-up to obtain the study outcomes.A polygenic risk score (PRS) will be constructed as a composite likelihood ratio of 83 single nucleotide polymorphisms. The Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium risk model, including age, race/ethnicity, family history of breast cancer, benign breast disease and breast density will be used to estimate a preliminary 5-year absolute risk of breast cancer. A Bayesian approach will be used to update this risk with the PRS value.The primary outcome measures will be attitude towards, intention to participate in and satisfaction with personalised breast cancer screening. Secondary outcomes will include the proportions of women who accept to participate and who complete the different phases of the study. Thermal excitations typically reduce the electric polarization in ferroelectric materials. Here, we show by means of first-principles calculations that multiferroic BiFe&#95;{1-x}Co&#95;{x}O&#95;{3} solid solutions with 0.25≤x≤0.50 (BFCO) represent a noteworthy exception to this behavior. In particular, we find that, at room temperature and for moderate pressures of 0.1-1.0 GPa, depending on the composition, the electric polarization of bulk BFCO increases by ∼150%. The origin of such an exceptional behavior is a phase transformation involving a low-T rhombohedral (R) phase and a high-T supertetragonal (T) phase. Both R and T phases are ferrimagnetic near room temperature with an approximate net magnetization of 0.13 μ&#95;{B} per formula unit. Contrary to what occurs in either bulk BiFeO&#95;{3} or BiCoO&#95;{3}, the T phase is stabilized over the R by increasing temperature due to its higher vibrational entropy. This extraordinary T-induced R→T phase transition is originated by polar phonon modes that involve concerted displacements of transition-metal and oxygen ions.

Facile patterning technologies of silver nanowires (AgNWs) with low-cost, high-resolution, designable, scalable, substrate-independent, and transferable characteristics are highly desired. However, it remains a grand challenge for any material processing method to fulfil all desirable features. Herein, a new patterning method is introduced by combining inkjet printing with adhesion manipulation of substrate interfaces. Both positive and negative patterns (i.e., AgNW grid and rectangular patterns) have been simultaneously achieved, and the pattern polarity can be reversed through adhesion modification with judiciously selected supporting layers. The electrical performance of the AgNW grids depends on the AgNW interlocking structure, manifesting a strong structure-property correlation. High-resolution and complex AgNW patterns with line width and spacing as small as 10 μm have been demonstrated through selective deposition of poly(methyl methacrylate) layers. In addition, customized AgNW patterns, such as logos and words, can be fabricated onto A4-size samples and subsequently transferred to targeted substrates, including Si wafers, a curved glass vial, and a beaker. This reported inkjet-assisted process therefore offers a new effective route to manipulate AgNWs for advanced device applications.

Background and Objective: One of the main issues in the analysis of clinical neonatal brain MRI is the low anisotropic resolution of the data. In most MRI analysis pipelines, data are first re-sampled using interpolation or single image super-resolution techniques and then segmented using (semi-)automated approaches. In other words, image reconstruction and segmentation are then performed separately. In this article, we propose a methodology and a software solution for carrying out simultaneously high-resolution reconstruction and segmentation of brain MRI data., Methods: Our strategy mainly relies on generative adversarial networks. The network architecture is described in detail. We provide information about its implementation, focusing on the most crucial technical points (whereas complementary details are given in a dedicated GitHub repository). We illustrate the behavior of the proposed method for cortex analysis from neonatal MR images., Results: The results of the method, evaluated quantitatively (Dice, peak signal-to-noise ratio, structural similarity, number of connected components) and qualitatively on a research dataset (dHCP) and a clinical one (Epirmex), emphasize the relevance of the approach, and its ability to take advantage of data-augmentation strategies., Conclusions: Results emphasize the potential of our proposed method/software with respect to practical medical applications. Organic-inorganic perovskites have attracted increasing attention in recent years owing to their excellent optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance. In this work, the prototypical hybrid perovskite CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 is turned into a ferromagnetic material by doping Mn, which enables simultaneous control of both charge and spin of electrons. The room-temperature ferromagnetism originates from the double exchange interaction between Mn 2+ -I - -Mn 3+ ions. Furthermore, it is discovered that the magnetic field can effectively modulate the photovoltaic properties of Mn-doped perovskite films. The photocurrent of Mn-doped perovskite solar cells increases by 0.5% under a magnetic field of 1 T, whereas the photocurrent of undoped perovskite decreases by 3.3%. These findings underscore the potential of Mn-doped perovskites as novel solution-processed ferromagnetic material and promote their application in multifunctional photoelectric-magnetic devices.

The present work reports a detailed mechanistic interpretation of the role of the solubility of dopants and resultant midgap defect energies in band gap engineering. While there is a general perception that a single dopant is associated with single solubility and defect mechanisms, in reality, the potential for multiple solubility and defect mechanisms requires a more nuanced interpretation. Similarly, Kröger-Vink defect equilibria assume that stoichiometries during substitutional and interstitial solid solubility as well as Schottky and Frenkel pair formation are compensated by the diffusion of matrix ions to the grain boundaries or surface. However, this approach does not allow the possibility that stoichiometry is uncompensated, where diffusion of the matrix ion to lattice interstices occurs, followed by charge compensation by redox of this ion. Consequently, a modified defect equilibria formalism has been developed in order to allow description of this situation. Experimental data for the structural, chemical, semiconducting, and photocatalytic properties as a function of doping level are correlated with conceptual structural models, a comprehensive energy band diagram, and the corresponding defect equilibria. These correlations reveal the complex mechanisms of the interrelated solubility and defect formation mechanisms, which change significantly and irregularly as a function of small changes in doping level. The analyses confirm that the assumption of single mechanisms of solid solubility and defect formation may be simplifications of more complex processes. The generation of (1) a matrix of complementary characterisation and analytical data, (2) the calculation of a complete energy band diagram, (3) consideration of charge compensation mechanisms and redox beyond the limitations of Kröger-Vink approaches, and (4) the development of models of corresponding structural analogies combine to create a new approach to interpret and explain experimental data. These strategies allow deconstruction of these complex issues and thus targeting of optimal and possibly unique doping levels to achieve lattice configurations that may be energetically and structurally unfavorable. These approaches then can be applied to other doped semiconducting systems.

Conventional refrigeration methods based on compression-expansion cycles of greenhouse gases are environmentally threatening and cannot be miniaturized. Electrocaloric effects driven by electric fields are especially well suited for implementation of built-in cooling in portable electronic devices. However, most known electrocaloric materials present poor cooling performances near room temperature, contain toxic substances, and require high electric fields. Here, we show that lead-free ferroelectric thin-film bilayers composed of (Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 )TiO 3 -BaTiO 3 (BNBT) and Ba(Zr 0.2 Ti 0.8 )O 3 -(Ba 0.7 Ca 0.3 )TiO 3 (BCZT) display unprecedentedly large electrocaloric effects of ∼23 K near room temperature under moderate electric bias. The giant electrocaloric effect observed in BNBT/BCZT bilayers, which largely surpasses the sum of the individual caloric responses measured in BNBT and BCZT, is originated from the presence of compositional bound charges at their interface. Our discovery of interface charge-induced giant electrocaloric effects indicates that multilayered oxide heterostructures hold tremendous promise for developing highly efficient and scalable solid-state cooling applications.

Thermoelectric materials create an electric potential when subjected to a temperature gradient and vice versa; hence they can be used to harvest waste heat into electricity and in thermal management applications. However, finding highly efficient thermoelectrics with high figures of merit, zT ≥ 1, is very challenging because the combination of a high power factor and low thermal conductivity is rare in materials. Here, we use first-principles methods to analyze the thermoelectric properties of Li2SnX3 (X = S, and Se), a recently synthesized class of lithium fast-ion conductors presenting high thermal stability. In p-type Li2SnX3, we estimate highly flat electronic valence bands that produce high Seebeck coefficients exceeding 400 μV K-1 at 700 K. In n-type Li2SnX3, the electronic conduction bands are slightly dispersive; however, the accompanying electron-acoustic phonon scattering is weak, which induces high electrical conductivity. The combination of a high Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity gives rise to high power factors, reaching a maximum of ∼4.5 mW m-1 K-2 at 300 K in both n-type Li2SnS3 and Li2SnSe3. Likewise, the thermal conductivity in Li2SnX3 is low as compared to conventional thermoelectric materials, 1.35-4.65 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature. As a result, we estimate a maximum zT of 1.1 in n-type Li2SnS3 at 700 K and of 2.1 (1.1) in n-type Li2SnSe3 at the same temperature (300 K). Our findings of large zT in Li2SnX3 suggest that lithium fast-ion conductors, typically employed as electrolytes in solid-state batteries, hold exceptional promise as thermoelectric materials.

Holey 2D metal oxides have shown great promise as functional materials for energy storage and catalysts. Despite impressive performance, their processing is challenged by the requirement of templates plus capping agents or high temperatures; these materials also exhibit excessive thicknesses and low yields. The present work reports a metal-based coordination polymer (MCP) strategy to synthesize polycrystalline, holey, metal oxide (MO) nanosheets with thicknesses as low as two-unit cells. The process involves rapid exfoliation of bulk-layered, MCPs (Ce-, Ti-, Zr-based) into atomically thin MCPs at room temperature, followed by transformation into holey 2D MOs upon the removal of organic linkers in aqueous solution. Further, this work represents an extra step for decorating the holey nanosheets using precursors of transition metals to engineer their band alignments, establishing a route to optimize their photocatalysis. The high-pressure and high-temperature structural and chemical stability of ruthenium has been investigated via synchrotron X-ray diffraction using a resistively heated diamond anvil cell. In the present experiment, ruthenium remains stable in the hcp phase up to 150 GPa and 960 K. The thermal equation of state has been determined based upon the data collected following four different isotherms. A quasi-hydrostatic equation of state at ambient temperature has also been characterized up to 150 GPa. The measured equation of state and structural parameters have been compared to the results of ab initio simulations performed with several exchange-correlation functionals. The agreement between theory and experiments is generally quite good. Phonon calculations were also carried out to show that hcp ruthenium is not only structurally but also dynamically stable up to extreme pressures. These calculations also allow the pressure dependence of the Raman-active E 2g mode and the silent B 1g mode of Ru to be determined.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with high case fatality in infective endocarditis (IE), but epidemiological data on the frequency of AKI during IE is scarce. We aimed to describe the frequency and risk factors for AKI during the course of IE using Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes consensual criteria., Methods: Using the French hospital discharge database (French acronym PMSI), we retrospectively reviewed the charts of 112 patients presenting with a first episode of probable or definite IE between January 2010 and May 2015., Results: Seventy-seven patients (68.8%) developed AKI. In univariate analysis, risk factors for AKI were cardiac surgery for IE (n=29, 37.7% vs. n=4, 1.4%, P<0.0005), cardiac failure (n=29, 36.7% vs. n=1, 2.9%, P<0.0005), diabetes mellitus (n=14, 18.2% vs. n=1, 0.9%, P=0.034), and prosthetic valve IEs (n=24, 31.2% vs. n=4, 11.4%). No differences were observed for gentamicin exposure (n=57, 64% vs. n=32, 86.5%, P=0.286). Prosthetic valve IE, cardiac failure, and vancomycin exposure were independently associated with AKI with respective odds ratio of 5.49 (95% CI 1.92-17.9), 4.37 (95% CI 4.37-465.7), and 1.084 (1.084-16.2). Mean length of hospital stay was significantly longer in patients presenting with AKI than in controls (respectively 52.4±22.1 days vs. 39.6±12.6, P<0.005)., Conclusion: AKI is very frequent during IE, particularly in patients with prosthetic valve IE, cardiac failure, and those receiving vancomycin., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Masson SAS. Two-dimensional metal oxide pseudocapacitors are promising candidates for size-sensitive applications. However, they exhibit limited energy densities and inferior power densities. Here, we present an electrodeposition technique by which ultrathin CeO 2-x films with controllable volumetric oxygen vacancy concentrations can be produced. This technique offers a layer-by-layer fabrication route for ultrathin CeO 2-x films that render Ce 3+ concentrations as high as ~60 at% and a volumetric capacitance of 1873 F cm -3 , which is among the highest reported to the best of our knowledge. This exceptional behaviour originates from both volumetric oxygen vacancies, which enhance electron conduction, and intercrystallite water, which promotes proton conduction. Consequently, simultaneous charging on the surface and in the bulk occur, leading to the observation of redox pseudocapacitive behaviour in CeO 2-x . Thermodynamic investigations reveal that the energy required for oxygen vacancy formation can be reduced significantly by proton-assisted reactions. This cyclic deposition technique represents an efficient method to fabricate metal oxides of precisely controlled defect concentrations and thicknesses.

Piezoelectric and other physical properties are significantly enhanced at (or near) a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in ferroelectrics. MPB materials have attracted significant attention owing to both fundamental physics as well as the possibility of well-regulated energy and information storage devices which are dominated by lead (Pb)-based materials. Here, we report the crystal structure, Raman spectra, dielectric constant and polarization near the MPB of lead free (1  -  x) Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3   -  x BaTiO 3 (0.00  ⩽  x  ⩽  0.10) solid-solution, prepared by sol-gel auto combustion technique and sintered by microwave sintering technique. With the addition of BaTiO 3 into Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 , it induces a structural phase transition from R3c (a single phase) to R3c  +  P4mm (a dual phase) close to x  =  0.06 and 0.07 and transform to a high symmetry tetragonal phase P4mm at higher compositions (x  =  0.08 to 0.10) as evident from our x-ray Rietveld refinement and Raman spectroscopic results. We perform first-principles calculations based on density functional theory that confirm a structural transition from a rhombohedral to a tetragonal phase under increasing x. In the prepared solid solution, an anomalous enhancement of remnant polarization ([Formula: see text]) was observed for x  =  0.06 and 0.07, which has been explained based on the existence of the MPB. On the other hand, the value of coercive field [Formula: see text] was found to be decreased linearly from x  =  0.00 to 0.06; it is constant for higher compositions. Further details of the ferroelectric properties on the electric field poled samples have been studied and compared with the as-grown (unpoled) samples.

Boron nitride (BN) is a material with outstanding technological promise due to its exceptional thermochemical stability, structural, electronic, and thermal conductivity properties, and extreme hardness. Yet, the relative thermodynamic stability of its most common polymorphs (diamond-like cubic and graphite-like hexagonal) has not been resolved satisfactorily because of the crucial role played by kinetic factors in the formation of BN phases at high temperatures and pressures (experiments) and by competing bonding and electrostatic and many-body dispersion forces in BN cohesion (theory). This lack of understanding hampers the development of potential technological applications and challenges the boundaries of fundamental science. Here, we use high-level first-principles theories that correctly reproduce all important electronic interactions (the adiabatic-connection fluctuation-dissipation theorem in the random phase approximation) to estimate with unprecedented accuracy the energy differences between BN polymorphs and thus overcome the accuracy hurdle that hindered previous theoretical studies. We show that the ground-state phase of BN is cubic and that the frequently observed hexagonal polymorph becomes entropically stabilized over the cubic at temperatures slightly above ambient conditions ( T c→h = 335 ± 30 K). We also reveal a low-symmetry monoclinic phase that is extremely competitive with the other low-energy polymorphs and that could explain the origins of the experimentally observed "compressed h-BN" phase. Our theoretical findings therefore should stimulate new experimental efforts in bulk BN and promote the use of high-level theories in modeling of technologically relevant van der Waals materials.

Mechanocaloric materials undergo sizable temperature changes during stress-induced phase transformations and hence are highly sought after for solid-state cooling applications. Most known mechanocaloric materials, however, operate at non-ambient temperatures and involve first-order structural transitions that pose practical cyclability issues. Here, we demonstrate large room-temperature mechanocaloric effects in the absence of any structural phase transformation in the fast-ion conductor Li 3 N (|ΔS| ~ 25 J K -1  kg -1 and |ΔT| ~ 5 K). Depending on whether the applied stress is hydrostatic or uniaxial the resulting caloric effect is either direct (ΔT > 0) or inverse (ΔT < 0). The dual caloric response of Li 3 N is due exclusively to stress-induced variations on its ionic conductivity, which entail large entropy and volume changes that are fully reversible. Our work should motivate the search of large and dual mechanocaloric effects in a wide variety of superionic materials already employed in electrochemical devices.

Introduction: Dengue fever is a major public health problem in New Caledonia, like in many Pacific Islands Countries and territories. In 2017 New Caledonia faced multiple circulations of arboviruses with a major outbreak of dengue and a co-circulating Zika virus. New Caledonia is considered as a non-endemic territory for measles since the mid 1990's., Case Presentation: A 41-year-old male presented fever, headache, sinusitis and exanthematous maculopapular rash. A clinical diagnosis of arbovirus was first suspected due to the local epidemic context. A few days later the patient was admitted to the main hospital. The real time RT-PCR for dengue and Zika virus were negative on the first blood sample. A drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome and other infectious diseases including measles were then suspected. ELISA tests for measles were positive for IgM and equivocal for IgG. A throat swab was immediately shipped to a reference laboratory for measles nucleic acid testing. After a week, the patient recovered and the presence of measles RNA was confirmed. No secondary cases were reported among contacts of the patient and the source of his infection could not be ascertained., Conclusion: Diagnosis of measles during an arbovirus outbreak in a country where measles disease is rare can be a pitfall for healthcare professionals. The introduction of measles via returned travellers or tourists from areas where measles remains endemic is a real threat to countries with high vaccine coverage., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there are no conflicts of interest.

Magnetic materials with large magnetic anisotropy are essential for workaday applications such as permanent magnets and magnetic data storage. There is widespread interest in finding efficient ways of controlling magnetic anisotropy, among which strain control has proven to be a very powerful technique. Here, we demonstrate the strain-mediated magnetic anisotropy in SrCoO 3-δ thin film, a perovskite oxide that is metallic and adopts a cubic structure at δ ≤ 0.25. We find that the easy-magnetization axis in SrCoO 3-δ can be rotated by 90° upon application of moderate epitaxial strains ranging from -1.2 to +1.8%. The magnetic anisotropy in compressive SrCoO 3-δ thin films is huge, as shown by magnetic hysteresis loops rendering an anisotropy energy density of ∼10 6 erg/cm 3 . The local variance in magnetic force microscopy upon temperature and magnetic field reveals that the evolution of magnetic domains in the SCO thin film is strongly dependent on magnetic anisotropy.

Resistive switching behaviour can be classified into digital and analog switching based on its abrupt and gradual resistance change characteristics. Realizing the transition from digital to analog switching in the same device is essential for understanding and controlling the performance of the devices with various switching mechanisms. Here, we investigate the resistive switching in a device made with strontium titanate (SrTiO 3 ) nanoparticles using X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and direct electrical measurements. It is found that the well-known rupture/formation of Ag filaments is responsible for the digital switching in the device with Ag as the top electrode. To modulate the switching performance, we insert a reduced graphene oxide layer between SrTiO 3 and the bottom FTO electrode owing to its good barrier property for the diffusion of Ag ions and high out-of-plane resistance. In this case, resistive switching is changed from digital to analog as determined by the modulation of interfacial resistance under applied voltage. Based on that controllable resistance, potentiation and depression behaviours are implemented as well. Current interest in barocaloric effects has been stimulated by the discovery that these pressure-driven thermal changes can be giant near ferroic phase transitions in materials that display magnetic or electrical order. Here we demonstrate giant inverse barocaloric effects in the solid electrolyte AgI, near its superionic phase transition at ~420 K. Over a wide range of temperatures, hydrostatic pressure changes of 2.5 kbar yield large and reversible barocaloric effects, resulting in large values of refrigerant capacity. Moreover, the peak values of isothermal entropy change (60 J K -1  kg -1 or 0.34 J K -1  cm -3 ) and adiabatic temperature changes (18 K), which we identify for a starting temperature of 390 K, exceed all values previously recorded for barocaloric materials. Our work should therefore inspire the study of barocaloric effects in a wide range of solid electrolytes, as well as the parallel development of cooling devices.

Summary: We investigated 10 mother-newborn pairs and found a 90% rate of dengue virus (DENV) transmission during the perinatal period. Here, we describe DENV kinetics in the sera of newborns before the onset of disease. Of the breast-milk samples analyzed, 75% tested positive for DENV., Background: Dengue is the most common mosquito-borne viral disease in humans. With this study, we aimed to investigate the risk of vertical (DENV) transmission during the peripartum period and to describe its viral kinetics in serum and breast milk., Methods: We carried out a prospective study during the 2012-2013 dengue epidemic in New Caledonia, its most severe on record. All mothers hospitalized at the Centre Hospitalier Territorial in Nouméa, New Caledonia, with symptoms of dengue infection between 7 days before and 2 days after delivery and/or whose infant was infected during breastfeeding were investigated. DENV was detected and quantified by quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in sera and breast milk (mothers), sera and gastric fluid (newborns), cord blood, and placentas. DENV kinetics and sequences in sera and breast milk were studied. Clinical presentation and biological evolution in mother-newborn pairs were analyzed., Results: Ten mother-newborn pairs were investigated over an 11-month period. One premature birth, 3 hemorrhagic complications, and 1 maternal death occurred. Nine newborns were infected and symptomatic. One case of deep thrombocytopenia and 1 case of anoxic encephalopathy occurred. DENV was detected in breast milk samples from 9 (75%) of 12 infected breastfeeding mothers. Original DENV kinetics in sera and breast milk were described., Conclusions: The occurrence of vertical DENV transmission was high (90%) in viremic mothers at delivery, and these mothers and their infants were at major risk for obstetric and neonatal complications. The modes of viral transmission are difficult to clarify. The risk of DENV transmission through breast milk seems plausible. Close follow-up of mothers and prolonged surveillance of their newborns are required for minimizing complications. Finding solid-state electrolytes with high ionic conductivity near room temperature is an important prerequisite for developing all-solid-state electrochemical batteries. Here, we investigate the effects of point defects (vacancies) and biaxial stress on the superionic properties of fast-ion conductors (represented by the archetypal compounds CaF 2 , Li-rich antiperovskite Li 3 OCl, and AgI) by using classical molecular dynamics and first-principles simulation methods. We find that the critical superionic temperature of all analyzed families of fast-ion conductors can be reduced by several hundreds of degrees through the application of relatively small biaxial stresses (|σ| ≤ 1 GPa) on slightly defective samples (c v ∼ 1%). In AgI, we show that superionicity can be triggered at room temperature by applying a moderate compressive biaxial stress of ∼1 GPa. In this case, we reveal the existence of a σ-induced order-disorder phase transition involving sizable displacements of all the ions with respect to the equilibrium lattice that occurs prior to the stabilization of the superionic state. In CaF 2 and Li 3 OCl, by contrast, we find that tensile biaxial stress (σ < 0) favors ionic conductivity as due to an effective increase of the volume available to interstitial ions, which lowers the formation energy of Frenkel pair defects. Our findings provide valuable microscopic insight into the behavior of fast-ion conductors under mechanical constraints, showing that biaxial stress (or, conversely, epitaxial strain) can be used as an effective means to enhance ionic conductivity.
